Mistletoe and Spirits

Rate this book
It's not every day one wakes up to receive a phone call informing them they have inherited a bookstore. Down on her luck, recently unemployed, and on the cusp of eviction for missing rent, life is finally turning around for Josephine Locke. Yet, something is strange about the bookstore. Something…ghostly.

Brett Jacobs loves working as a bartender. He knows most of the people in the sleepy little town of Little Comfort. He also makes great tips and fills his lonely nights so he doesn't notice how empty his apartment is when he goes home to sleep. When the new girl in town walks into his bar, he's instantly taken with her, but she doesn't seem to notice him at all.

Christmas is soon approaching, and strange occurrences in the bookstore lead Josephine to believe it's haunted. Is it a ghost, or fate trying to push her into Brett's arms? Sometimes it takes a bit of mistletoe and an unruly spirit to bring people together.

Author's Note: This is a contemporary holiday romance with minor paranormal elements

Christmas "ghost" story to warm your heart

Christmas ghost stories have been a 'thing' since Dickens and Scrooge. This is one modern romance fans will love - especially this year of the pandemic and social distancing. A small town backwater with an old fashioned book store, so small there's only one bar in the whole tiny town. A good-looking young bartender who, despite being the soul of chivalry and an old-fashioned gentleman, has yet find his ladylove. A young woman, alone, newly arrived because she's inherited the bookstore property from an aunt she never met, who desperately needs a new start, a new life, and a connection to her fellow human beings. A deranged, vengeful, disinherited relative of the deceased, an assault-prone ball of mistletoe, and a small town full of big-hearted people. This is writer Rebekah Lewis' ingredient list for her holiday romance recipe. It bakes up just fine, folks - a pleasing blend of naughty and nice, with a touch of spice and a pinch of paranormal - the perfect holiday reading treat. This is a voluntary holiday ARC review.

Mistletoe and Spirits
By: Rebekah Lewis
Narrated by: Chad Loomis

There is nothing better than a holiday listen to keep Christmas in our hearts! Rebekah Lewis's novella Mistletoe and Spirits is a wonderful story! Josephine inherits her aunts bookstore. She didn't know her well, but is willing to take the chance to try and run it. Little things keep happening, like the store is haunted! Brett, the local bartender has taken an interest in Jo and does what he can to help her. Things begin to get a little scary and the future of the store is at risk? Will the ghost help her out? Is the bookstore really haunted? And will these two find they are made for each other? Love works in mysterious ways, and this cute story proves that. Questionable circumstances, fun chemistry, crazy towns people and a diary all lead us to a Merry Christmas!

Chad Loomis brings this sweet, small town romance to life. He has a warm tone in his voice that pulls us in with that comfortable feeling and makes the characters real. I enjoy his voices and can't wait to see what it next.

Charming (and Spirited) Christmas Romance

This is a charming small-town holiday romance. I thought the heroine was a little prickly at first, but she grew on me. The hero was sweet and protective right away, and he was adorable in his somewhat bashful initial attraction to her. The heroine lucked into inheriting a bookshop from an estranged aunt whom she never knew. How is it that so many people in small-town romances and cozy mysteries inherit such wonderful things like bookshops, great old houses, and antique shops?! There was a suitably evil villain as well who desperately wanted the heroine’s inheritance. And about the spirits mentioned in the title... are the strange goings-on—including lights that seem to come on on their own and flying mistletoe balls—the work of spirits or something of this world? You will have to read to find out!

Jo is hoping that the bookstore that she has inherited from an unknown aunt, will be the fresh start that’s much needed. To top off her good fortune, she meets a handsome bartender, Brett, across the street and sparks fly. Just as Jo believes that she can possibly have an HEA, things come crashing to a halt when a spoilt young woman says that she is the rightful owner of the store. Jo is discouraged but she finds strength in the support of her aunt’s shop assistant, Brett and his boss, Frank...and a bit of mistletoe. Cute story that’s worth the read/listen.

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. I thought this short holiday romance between Josephine and Brett was fun and heartwarming. These two were perfect for each other. So much so that a little nudge is even given from the most unlikely of places. I thought the story was well written with good characters

This was a decent story. Not very memorable though. The plot was sweet and somewhat simple. The characters were sweet and fell in love swiftly. There was some action and a plot twist or two but the story as a whole wasn’t memorable for me.

I still give this a four out of five stars. It was a sweet plot with endearing characters but it got lost in the shuffle of all the other stories I’ve been reading.
