Ngugi has put together a new collection under an old title. One of the completely new pieces, "Freedom of Expression," was written for the campaign to try to save Ken Saro-Wiwa and seven other writers from execution in Nigeria. He has rewritten almost all of the other pieces which have been kept. Ngugi says "It seemed to me how ironic the title Writers in Politics had turned out to be. In re-issuing these essays I didn't want to lose that nexus between culture and power which had been captured by the title."

About the author

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was a Kenyan author and academic, who was described as East Africa's leading novelist.
He began writing in English before later switching to write primarily in Gikuyu, becoming a strong advocate for literature written in native African languages. His works include the celebrated novel The River Between, plays, short stories, and essays, ranging from literary and social criticism to children's literature. He was the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri. His short story The Upright Revolution: Or Why Humans Walk Upright was translated into more than 100 languages.
In 1977, Ngũgĩ embarked upon a novel form of theatre in Kenya that sought to liberate the theatrical process from what he held to be "the general bourgeois education system", by encouraging spontaneity and audience participation in the performances. His project sought to "demystify" the theatrical process, and to avoid the "process of alienation [that] produces a gallery of active stars and an undifferentiated mass of grateful admirers" which, according to Ngũgĩ, encourages passivity in "ordinary people". Although his landmark play Ngaahika Ndeenda, co-written with Ngũgĩ wa Mirii, was a commercial success, it was shut down by the authoritarian Kenyan regime six weeks after its opening.
Ngũgĩ was subsequently imprisoned for more than a year. Adopted as an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, he was released from prison and fled Kenya. He was appointed Distinguished Professor of Comparative Literature and English at the University of California, Irvine. He previously taught at Northwestern University, Yale University, and New York University. Ngũgĩ was frequently regarded as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He won the 2001 International Nonino Prize in Italy, and the 2016 Park Kyong-ni Prize. Among his children are authors Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ and Wanjiku wa Ngũgĩ.

هو مجموعة مقالات متنوعة، تدور في فضاء السلطة والثقافة، أو علاقة الأدب بالسياسة. يتحدث من خلالها نغوغي وا ثيونغو عن كل هؤلاء الذين عانوا ضد الكولونيالية والعنصرية والهيمنة الثقافية والسياسية والاقتصادية والامبرالية في القارة السمراء. عن كل هؤلاء الذين صارعوا من أجل نظام جديد، ومجتمع جيد، ومستقبل أكثر إنسانية.

عن السواد في هذا العالم، عن معاناة السود، عن الوعي الأسود، وكيفية إشراك الجمال الأسود وفكره وقضاياه في محيط المجتمع، في ظل كل هذا التمييز من الآخر أو المضطهد.

عن الأدب وكل ما يشف عنه، عن سبل توجيهه وخلقه، عن موقفه في الصراعات الطبقية هذه التي يعاصرها؛ بوصفه فعل مقاومة، اذ يبرز جمالية الصراع الإنساني للتحرير، و لدوره في التعبير عن ثقافة الشعب وذاته الاجتماعية. مع استقصاء التحولات في الثقافة السوداء، في سياق الأبعاد التاريخية والثقافية والسياسية والأخلاقية.

ترجمة فكر مُضطَهَدٍ ليست بالتجربة اليسيرة، لكنها ماتعة حقًّا ومتوخَّاة وكانت جميلة -علي أن أقرَّ بذلك -
وما دعاني لاختيار هذا الكتاب وترجمته هو مقال تعرفت به لأول مرة على نغوغي الكاتب والمفكر، إذ وجدته حينئذ كاتبًا مغمورًا ويجب أن يصل فكره مدى أوسع، فكانت هذه الترجمة، وأتمنى أن تؤتي أكلها.

توفي الكاتب قبل عدة أيام ويعتبر من عمالقة الأدب الأفريقي ورشح لنوبل لسنوات، وقرأت له نوفيلا قصيرة وهي لاتبك أيها الطفل، وتويجات الدم على قائمة القراءة القريبة .. عندما انتشر خبر وفاته بحثت عن كتاب قصير له فكان هذا الكتاب ما حصلت عليه ولم اندم على قراءته أبدًا .


هو كتاب ينسج خيوطه من مقالات تتداخل فيها السياسة بالأدب، والذاكرة الفردية بالجماعية، حيث يُحلِّل نغوغي وا ثيونغو ببصيرته الحادّة أوجاع القارة الإفريقية ومآسي شعوبها التي وقفت في وجه الاستعمار والعنصرية والهيمنة الإمبريالية.

يتحدث عن أولئك الذين لم ينكسروا تحت وطأة التاريخ، الذين جعلوا من صراعهم فعلًا من أجل كرامة الإنسان الأسود، من أجل إعادة صياغة المستقبل وفق معايير أكثر عدلًا وإنسانية. يناقش الوعي الأسود لا كضحية فقط، بل كقوة خلّاقة، كجمال وفكر وحضور، في عالم لم يتوقف عن التمييز والاضطهاد.

يبحر الكتاب في دور الأدب كمساحة للمقاومة، كفعل ينتمي إلى الشعب لا إلى النخبة، كصوت يحمل ثقافة المهمّشين ومعاناتهم، ويعيد الاعتبار للذات السوداء في فضاء ثقافي مشبع بالتحولات الطبقية والسياسية.

نغوغي هنا ليس مجرد كاتب، بل مفكّر ومناضل لا يساوم، يحمل قلمه كسلاح وموقفه كراية. الطريف أن نغوغي كان يكتب بالإنجليزية ولكنه تحوّل عنها إلى لغته القومية الكينية في صحوة جاءت له .. عملٌ ملهم، وترجمة تنقل نبض النص بأمانة وجمال..

“The question of audience has a bearing on the next few problems for a writer: What is the subject and content of my work? From whose standpoint do I look at that content, whether I am critical of the content or not? You cannot possibly write for a peasant-worker audience (or perform) the same things in the same way as you would for the parasitic jet set in Africa. The bourgeois class wants a literature that titillates the senses, that makes them pass through Mathare Valley without seeing it. For them sex and more sex is the answer; or else, absurd little sugary, musical left-overs from abroad which are so fashionable in Kenyan theatres: bartered pride for peace of mind over a glass of whiskey? Tell this class that their water is taken from the mouth of the thirsty, their clothes from bodies of naked children, awaken them from their sweet self-deceitful slumbers, and you might find yourself in a maximum security prison. On the other hand, if you write in a language understood by peasants and workers (and thus assuming them as the audience), you’ll have to search your literary conscience whether to correctly reflect their lives or not; whether to tell them their poverty is God-ordained or man-conditioned and therefore to be fought.”

It's fitting that I should finish the year I kicked off with Home and Exile with this collection. Pure serendipity. They are beautifully complementary, similarly unapologetic, sharp and empowering.

My only criticism of both collections is that they both intelligently and incisively dissect the place of colonialism and imperialism on African literature, but never gender. There is no commentary or reflection on why so few African women writers emerged at the time Ngugi and Achebe were getting published by Heinemann in the 50s through the 70s (when most of these essays were written), and how the conditions of patriarchy and colonialism were a disproportionately powerful obstacle for women to imagine, write, teach. The African writer is a default male - and I wonder if it occurred to these thinkers at any point in their careers that they are enabling the same conditions of cultural domination they were railing against. Afterall, in matters of politics, the writer can never be non-aligned.

Other than that, this is readable, insightful, enjoyable, brilliant, powerful...all the things. Read it!!

كتاب يستحق القراءة واتمنى لو انني اقراءه بشكل متكرر لكون الكاتب لم يترك مجالاً في اي موضوع تحدث فيه الا واسهب بشكل تركك مع الكثير من الاجوبة اكثر من الاسئلة .
