Death by Cupcake #4

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper

Rate this book
It’s all candy cane cupcakes and peppermint coffee until you find a dead elf on your doorstep.

Only the elf wasn’t a real elf, because elves don’t actually exist – not even at Christmas time. A college student dressed like an elf decided taking a nap on the stoop of Callie's Cakes in sub-zero winter temps was a good idea. It wasn’t. Anna, the pink-haired baker extraordinaire, is convinced the student’s death was not an accident. She drags Callie and Kristie along with her as she attempts to discover who killed the elf … um… student.

Will the gals of Callie’s Cakes find the killer before Christmas is ruined?

Cupcakes not included, although you’ll find recipes for all the delicious Christmas cupcakes Anna bakes.

Favorite Quotes:

“An elf died on our doorstep,” Anna repeats. He does a slow blink before shaking his head. “You know, a few months ago, I would have been shocked by those words coming out of anyone’s mouth. Now?” He shrugs.

He chuckles and waves as he walks out the door. I may be annoyed with him, but nothing can stop me from watching him walk away. The view is too fantastic to pass up.

I could easily push her out of the way. I’m a half a foot taller than her and weigh substantially more than her. How much more? I’m not saying. No way.

I hear a collective sigh from the group of women and smirk. I can’t blame their fangirling. With his height of around six feet, fit body, and dark blue eyes, Tyler is a catch. Add in the fire department t-shirt straining against his muscles underneath his apron and it’s a miracle no one has deliberately started a fire to see him in action.

My Review:

D.E. Haggerty can’t go wrong with her humorous cozy mystery series featuring a quirky cast of characters, unusual murder victims, mouth-watering cupcakes, a pink-haired pixie-sized baker, and an entertaining and original premise. The characters are relatable, the storylines are humorous and easy to follow and the mystery has a bit of bite to it. It was a quick, fun, and lively read, but a challenge to my diet plan.

Callie, Anna and Kristie are back for a yummy holiday cozy mystery. When the ladies discover a dead man dressed as an elf on the front stoop of Callie’s Cakes, Anna’s ready to dive into the sleuthing. Callie, not so much. Between teaching and running her own business, she’s spent. Add the mysterious actions of her boyfriend and Callie is ready to throw in the towel. But Anna’s enthusiasm won’t be quenched, no matter how much booze she sneaks into her cupcakes, so Callie and Kristie tag along. Soon, they’re framed for murder and these ladies will stop at nothing to unwrap the killer, no matter what their law-enforcement and fire department boyfriends say.

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper is my Christmas wish come true. D.E. Haggerty has mixed cozy comedy with cozy mystery within a snow globe of antics by three of my favorite literary characters. There’s a true whodunit shaken with plenty of humorous lines and a dizzying array of baked treats. It’s light, fun and perfect for the holidays. There’s a bit of serious talk dealing with frat boys and date rape which was really well done. The plot moves at a quick pace and the unveiling of the murderer shocked me. I never expected it.

If you’re looking for a holiday cozy mystery to curl up to, pick this up right away. Highly recommend!

The easiest book to read in a few minutes. This one had everything in it, a cute and cozy murder mystery with love and friendship intertwined.

A dead elf on the door of the bakery caused the girls to investigate. The investigation was short and sweet, the murderer not very intelligent, the cupcakes delicious. I loved the friendship and camaraderie in the dialogues. The author managed to capture the ambiance well.

Overall, a cute read with, of course, recipes at the end.

It's always so fun to revisit the cupcake crew, you never know what these gals will be getting mixed up in next! Well, other than murder and mayhem! And that's definitely what we got with Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper. When the ladies find a dead college student on the doorstep of their bakery, they can't help but want to find out why- why he was murdered and why he was left there.

Okay, it might be Anna who really wants to figure out the whys, but as usual, she's able to rope Callie and Kristy into her shenanigans. And lucky for us, we get to go along for the ride! I swear I wish I was friends with these gals, it really is never a dull moment with them. And throw in some super hunky boyfriends, what's not to love?!?

In addition to the questions surrounding the death of the college student, Callie's dealing with her own little mystery, when it comes to Ben and why he's been so secretive lately. She's feeling some kind of way and wants to get to the bottom of things, even if it means going on a stake-out with her best girls.

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper is another entertaining addition to the Death by Cupcake series. Murder aside, there are plenty of laughs and crazy antics, and cupcakes galore!

Three friends investigate a murder after finding a dead elf on the doorstep to their bakery. The "elf" turns out to be a student they all know, and his reputation may have led to his murder.
The women of Callie's Cakes have been friends a long time and it shows in their interactions. The humor and dialogue between Callie, Kristie, and Anna is believable and genuine. You want to hang out with this fun bunch. I also enjoyed the expressions used by them ("flaming candy canes", "holy chocolate snowmen in the sky"). The way in which the killer was caught and their motive was a little farfetched, though not entirely unbelievable.
This is the fourth book in the series but the first one I've read. Since there are references and slight spoilers to previous books, I would suggest reading in order so you can get the full history of the characters.
The descriptions of the cupcakes throughout the book sounded amazing, so I was thrilled to see recipes at the back. Hopefully they taste as good as they sound. I'm excited to give them a try. Overall, this was a quick, fun read and I would like to go back and read the previous books and future ones as well.

If your looking for a super sweet, funny, Christmas story....look no further, you’ve found it!!! This is one of the cutest, funniest and loving stories that I’ve read in a long time. This story is so good that I swear I’ve got the “book hangover” from a cute cozy. I’m having the hardest time trying to find my next read because I’m still hooked on how great this story was. You’ll laugh and fall in love with the awesome characters, Anna is my absolute favorite, well I love all 3 women, but Anna’s my favorite.
This is a story about 3 women that work at the Callies bakery. One day they go to open the store and find a elf sitting in front of the door....turns out that elf is dead and they all know him. They, the 3 wonderful women in this story decide to start a investigation of their own.....yes the cops are also on it, but these 3 women do their “own” investigation. The 3 are truly good friends that want to know WHY this elf died in front of their bakery.....you’ll laugh your way through this investigation and get into the Christmas spirit with these 3 wonderful characters. Enjoy!!! :)) happy reading!!!! :)))

I don't think I have read anything by this author that I didn't enjoy! This book is humorous and kept me engaged from the first page to the last.  I liked that it was a shorter read, it was just the right length to read before I went to sleep.

This series centers around three women that are good friends, they have hunky men that adore them and there is a cupcake shop involved with mouth-watering sweet treats.  All is going well until an elf shows up dead on the shop's doorsteps.  It is then off to the races to find out who killed the elf and why.  The answer was a bit surprising to me and I truly didn't suspect the killer.  Along with finding the killer, Callie is trying to figure out what is going on with her boyfriend Ben.  The answer is sweet but that is all I will say, you will have to read the book yourself to find out the answer.

Anna cracks me up - she is petite but a force of nature.  Let's just say you shouldn't mess with her.

This is the fourth book in the series and I didn't read the first three but I don't think that would keep anyone from enjoying this book, you just miss out on the character development.  I will have to go back and read the first three at some point to see what I missed.

Overall it was a great book and we give it 5 paws up.

What a fun Christmas murder mystery! I very much enjoyed Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper (Death by Cupcake, #4) by D.E. Haggerty. Since it is a novella, it was a quick read and a great story. While I’ve not read any other books in this series, I quickly got acquainted with the characters. Callie, Kristie, and Anna run a cupcake bakery by day and can’t help investigating murders, especially when the murder victim (an Elf who was also one of Callie’s students) shows up on their doorstep!

The investigation, spearheaded by Anna, moves along rapidly and the girls get themselves into trouble, of course. Ultimately, they figure out who the murderer is! While embroiled in their investigation, Callie is also worrying about boyfriend, Ben, being distant. But she gets the surprise of her life at the end of the story😊

Add to all this delicious cupcake recipes at the end and I was craving sweet treats and peppermint coffee! I was given a free copy of this book in the hope that I would review it; I am happy to do so.

An Elf in the doorway of Callie’s Cakes....a
dead Elf none the less....What a way to start
the day!!!
Turns out the murdered Elf was actually one
of Callie’s students. He volunteered at the
community center that Kristie funds plus he
was a regular buyer of Anna’s cupcakes.
The murdered Elf was placed in the doorway
on purpose. Why was he placed at Callie’s
Cakes? Why and where was he murdered?
Will this murder ruin the Christmas holiday
and Christmas spirit?
The three girls from Callie’s Cakes....Anna,
Kristie and Callie start their own investigation.
Intriguing, well plotted book with characters
that are believable involved in a puzzling
situation. Add humor, edge and plenty of
cupcakes for a delicious, well written story.
I volunteered to read Christmas Cupcakes and
Caper. Thanks to the author via The Cozy

Fun, Short Novella

I was looking for a short Christmas story to read this afternoon. This one looked cute, so I gave it a try. I haven't read the other books in the series, but it wasn't too hard to figure out the characters. I adored the hilarious sentences that started each chapter! And the cupcakes sound amazing!

Christmas Cupcakes & a Caper is another humorous adventure in the cozy mystery series starring Callie, Anna and Kristie from Callie’s Cakes. As Kristie went to open the shop she found an elf sat on the floor, leaning against the door. As the door opened the elf fell inside. Assuming he was drunk, Callie tried to wake him up, but to no avail. There was no pulse, so Callie called 911. It turns out the three ladies recognised the man. He was a student at the university where Callie teaches and they all have a tenuous connection to him. So begins another entertaining edition in the Death by Cupcake series.

Anna is convinced it wasn’t an accidental death and persuades Callie and Kristie that they need to investigate. Callie has her own worries though, about her boyfriend Ben and his secretive behaviour.

So now the girls have two mysteries to solve, much to Callie’s dismay. She has her work cut out to restrain Anna in her hunt for the supposed killer, especially when Kristie feels the need to join in. And how did she get roped into shadowing Ben? The murdered student is apparently morally disreputable according an overheard conversation and that is big no-no for Kristie after a date rape case she was involved in previously.

Although Christmas Cupcakes & a Caper is a light, fun read with the three girls and their hunky, (sometimes over) protective other halves, there’s a serious undertone. Each book is told from the differing first person perspectives of each of the likeable and well meaning ladies—it’s Callie’s turn in this one.

I do enjoy a cupcake now and again and, if I was into baking, I’d be trying out all the delicious sounding recipes at the end of the book…but then I’d have to eat them!

If you are looking for a cozy mystery then this book is for you. It has a wonderful set of characters, whom interact well with one another. I love how Kristie, Anna and Callie have such a strong friendship. Kristie and Anna fight like crazy and Callie is their referee. It is hilarious.

This book starts off when the girls' discover a dead elf on the front steps of their bakery Callie's Cakes. With a new murder mystery thrown on their doorsteps, the girls have no choice but to investigate. But that is not the only mystery Callie is dealing with. Callie's hot cop boyfriend Ben is being super secretive. Has the shine faded off their new relationship?

This was the first book in the series that I have read, but I really felt that you could read it as a standalone. It would be more fun if you read them from the beginning. That was you could see how the girls met their extremely hot sexy men. A gang task force cop, a regular detective and a hot firefighter. Ohh la la! What a dangerous combination. Don't worry this is a PG read and there are no dirty romps in the hay.

If you love fun and laughter, then this book is for you. It is a steady paced mystery of who done it, that will have you guessing wrong from the very beginning. So put on those comfy pj's and grab a glass of wine, because it is time to chill and read a fun mystery.

It is always fun to revisit with Callie and her friends, and as an additional bonus these a quick reads that are ideal for a commute or whilst waiting for an appointment!

Callie is in need of comfort in the form of Cupcakes, her boyfriend Ben (the Detective) has become secretive and seems to be withdrawing, Callie is scared that he is bored with her and about to dump her (and just before Christmas!) so her friends and co-workers, Anna the Cupcake Baker and Kristie the Barista (and founder of a local Youth Centre) have said they will set up a sting and find out what is going on.  Unfortunately before all this can come to pass the ladies of Callie's Cupcake discover a dead Elf outside their bakery! and all three of them recognise him, Callie because he has been in some of her German lectures at the local University, Kristie because he was an Intern at the Youth Centre and Anna because he came regularly to buy a cupcake.

At the Memorial service at the University the three friends overhear a conversation which indicates that this Elf was more on Santa's naughty list than nice and as they have found out that he was murdered and dumped on their doorstep the three of them are determined to find out who snuffed the Elf and why.

The festive holiday spirit came to a halt when a dead elf is found in front of Callie's Cakes. This is a serious problem! Callie and her friends need to find the killer and learn why the body was placed at the bakery. I knew they would get to the truth. These ladies are resourceful. They know how to follow the clues. Callie is a professor at the college so she can keep track of all the gossip. Anna, the baker, uses her scrumptious cupcakes as a bribe to get information. Kristie is passionate about helping people. She uses that drive to find answers. She won't give up. These three are great detectives. They have spunk and spirit and they made me smile at their escapades. The dialogue is sharp and sassy. An added bonus is their romantic interests. It added to my enjoyment of Christmas cupcakes and a Caper. I can't wait for their next adventure. I enjoy this storyline. It's fast paced and filled with humor and unexpected surprises. I loved seeing them try to save the holiday season. This is a perfect Christmas treat. I enjoyed D.E. Haggerty's writing style.

This book focuses on the 'Callie's Cakes' gang trying to find out who murdered the dead student on their doorstep.

With "Christmas Cupcakes & a Caper", D. E. Haggerty has created an expertly worded and funny suspense story with a romantic touch. The story comprises a broad variety of believable characters with sufficient depth, hilarious moments, and interesting interactions to solve the case of the murdered college student. I had a great time reading "Christmas Cupcakes & a Caper" – it is a very fun read. I was drawn into the story right away, chuckling about the stubborn protagonists, shaking my head - a lot because of Anna; for me, Callie and Kristie are a great counterpoint for Anna.

This is for you if you like female amateur sleuths, stubborn and determined women, hilarious situations as well as a great combination of cosy suspense, humour, and romance.

A funny and suspenseful book to read again.

Recommended.

Anna, Callie, and Kristie are back in their fourth adventure, and they are still as entertaining as ever. While the first three books each focused on one of the three women, giving us a deeper insight into her personality and backstory, this one showcases each of them throughout, using their individual skills and talents to the fullest, proving once again what a great team they make.

The easy rapport between the three women is very well written, drawing us into their inner circle of friendship and teamwork. The story is written with the perfect blend of drama and humor--and cupcakes!--to keep you reading to the end. As an added bonus, recipes for all the cupcakes mentioned in the story can be found at the back of the book, so you can add them to your repertoire of holiday treats.

If you are looking for a fun, quick and easy holiday read, this is definitely the one to choose!

This is the fourth book in the Death by Cupcake series and is a holiday novella. A very quick read! I have not read any of the others in the series and while you can read this on its own, a bit more background information would have been helpful. The characters are quirky but the murder was wrapped up very hastily, even for a novella. Great for getting into a holiday mood, though. I was craving a peppermint coffee!

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed this short read. Callie, Anna and Kristie are a fun trio amateur detectives. Especially Anna, she is like a little elf energizer bunny. She is small in height and uses it to her advantage. Running, jumping and bouncing, it's so cute.
The girls run a cupcake shop which Callie and Anna are partners. Anna claims everyone loves her cupcake. And with the favors described I can see why. I'm glad the author gives us recipes at the end. I will certainly be trying them and also the delicious peppermint coffee given.
This caper begins with the girls finding an elf lending against their front door. Kristine, who has some medical training, starts CPR until helps arrive. They already have a good ideal he is gone. No one can be exposed like that in a Wisconsin winter they all know better. With the college not to far away they aren't terribly shocked. They all three recognizes him. Anna, cause he comes in daily for her delicious cupcakes. According to her no one can resist them. Callie because he is a student in her literature class at the college. Kristie because he is a intern at her youth center. Anna is convinced it was no accident. So when they later find out that it was indeed murder. And since they all had a slight connection to him in some kind of way. Anna wants to know who killed him and why they left him on their doorstep. The other girls don't want to get involved with another murder, plus the boyfriend's won't be to happy about it. But they knew Anna would get into some type of trouble on her own because she to dang curious. So off they go to the college to find about the victim. Who he was and what was about him that caused someone to kill him.
I really had fun reading this book. It was an intense cozy but it did hold my interest throughout the book. Since it was my first book in the series I will be going back to read books 1-3. I now want to know more about the girls and why they started trying to solve murders.
I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper is the fourth book in the Death by Cupcake series. I enjoyed this light-hearted and fun Christmas cozy culinary mystery that takes place in Wisconsin. The story begins with the body of a student dressed as an elf left in front of Callie’s Cakes. When it turns out he was murdered, Callie, along with her two friends and coworkers, Anna and Kristie, once again play the part of amateur detectives.

I like the entertaining epigraphs D.E. Haggerty has included at the start of each chapter that ties into the Christmas holiday. The story is full of charming and amusing dialogue, playful and affectionate teasing between friends, romantic relationships, laugh out loud moments, and close-mouthed behavior. The story is a quick read with an ending that ties up the plot threads nicely. I am fond of sweets, and the descriptions of the cupcakes and the holiday coffee drink that are woven into the plotline sound scrumptious. I definitely appreciate the recipes for the holiday treats that are included at the end of the story with the names of the chapters in which they appear, and I plan to try all of them.

This can be read as a stand-alone book in one sitting. However, anyone who wants more details about the characters’ backstory than what is included in the story will need to read the first three books in the series. I plan to read them and look forward to future installments.

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper is a short murder mystery starring three friends Anna, Callie and Kristie who discover a dead body on the doorstep of the bakery Callie and Anna co-own one evening in the run-up to Christmas. The ladies call the police and all three of the ladies boyfriends, two of whom are involved in law enforcement and one of whom is a firefighter, arrive on the scene to assist their girlfriends in dealing with the situation.

Callie, a lecturer at the local university, as well as being a co-owner of the bakery, knows the victim, Donald Griffin, who was a student there. Kristie, who is involved at the local youth centre which is frequented by troubled teens, quickly discovers that Donald was not popular with her protegees. Anna, the baker of the cupcakes sold at the bakery, is the only one of the three who doesn't know him other than as a customer of the bakery. The three women become drawn into the murder investigation as a few odd occurrences and co-incidences come to their attention in relation to the young man's death and relationships with his fellow students.

This story is short and light, with a simple, straight forward plot, a bit of fun romance and lots of conversation and comments about delicious cupcakes of all kinds. The recipes for these lovely sounding cupcakes appear at the end of the book.

Christmas Cupcakes & A Caper is the fourth book in the Death By Cupcake series written by D. E. Haggerty. This is also the first book by this author that I have read. This is a fun, quick read (a novella).

Right on the first page my interest was grabbed:

“I moan as the taste of chocolate and fluffy cream combine to create heaven in my mouth but then the heavenly cream melts and a burn replaces it. My eyes water and I start to cough. “What the heck did you put in these? I somehow manage to ask.”

I was pleasantly surprised that the “whodunit” was a surprise until the very end… just the way I like my mysteries.

I chuckled when I realized that Anna used her scrumptious baking to get information - very smart lady!

While this is the fourth book in the series, I was not at a total loss following the storyline. A bit more background on the people would have helped but it was not a huge problem - just would have added to my understanding of the characters and grabbing enough interest to read the beginning of the series.

I must say that I loved the cover art and the recipes! And the humour. Guess I will need to go back and read books 1 - 3.

Having previously being involved in investigating crimes together, and now all dating men who run towards danger in the course of their professions, it is no surprise that when a body is literally delivered to their doorstep these three curious and adventurous women are not going to sit idly on the sidelines.
Each chapter begins with an appeal to Santa for help or understanding and includes a delicious (if not intoxicating) cupcake. Having a cupcake shop not far from campus, it is no surprise that many students have a connection. One of our protagonists is also a professor while another funds a youth center. When rumors fly that the deceased "elf" has been harassing (or worse) students, the three best friends decide to take matters into their own hands.
As a side plot, Ben, the detective boyfriend of one, is also acting distant and strange. If they have time, the ladies are going to get to the bottom of his odd behavior.
Filled with witty banter, colorful phrases and misdirections, can the women avoid the men attempting to protect them while they get to the bottom of a dead elf delivered to the cupcake shop.

When I saw Dena had written a Christmas book I couldn't wait to read it! Especially when it was with the ladies from Callie's Cakes. I love them!

A dead elf on the shop's doorstep was not good for business. Turned out, they knew the young man and he had been murdered! The police were investigating the murder but the women wanted to figure out who killed the elf and why. As well as why was he was left on their doorstep? During their search, they found out the man had not been well-liked so they had lots of suspects. Callie was having a hard time concentrating on the investigation because she was worried about her boyfriend. He was acting strangely. Another mystery for her to solve.

Investigating a murder is serious work but there are always lots of laughs when these women get together. It was a complete surprise to find out who the murderer was and why the elf was killed.

I was so glad to receive a complimentary copy of Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper and I am happy to share my thoughts. I recommend this book to romantic suspense fans who like some laughs in their mysteries. I enjoyed this book just as much the second time I read it.

Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper is part of the “Death by Cupcake” series by D.E. Haggerty. Listed as a novella in the series, it is a short story following the women of Callie’s Cakes and their investigation into the murder of an elf on the shop’s doorstep.

I have not read the other books in this series, but it was easy to pick up the story without the background knowledge of the characters. However, as a novella/short story, it felt very rushed and not a lot of depth to the story. Sometimes it was hard to follow along with which character was talking.

With that being said, I did enjoy the book. The cast of characters were likeable, and you wanted to know more about their lives. It makes you want to go back and read the rest of the series if you haven’t. An added bonus to the book was that there were a ton of cupcake recipes at the end!

I would recommend this book to someone looking for a quick Christmas cozy read!

I received a free copy of this book. My review is entirely voluntary. I had not read the other books in the Death by Cupcake series but will now eagerly start from the beginning because I enjoyed book 4, Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper so much. I did not feel lost having started on book 4 at all so anyone should feel free to jump into this series with any book available. Callie and her business partners are in the middle of the Holiday rush at Callie's Cakes when a very dead elf is left on their doorstep. All three of the ladies know the elf in some fashion and now feel like they need to help the police in solving the murder. Holiday baking, exams and campus rumors threaten to derail their investigation. The mystery was well written and full of twists. I loved the characters and laughed out loud several times. I highly recommend Christmas Cupcakes and a Caper to anyone who loves a mystery with plenty of humor.

Christmas Cupcakes and A Caper is the 4th installment of the Death by Cupcake series. This is the first in the series that I have read yet I was able to follow along and read as a stand alone, however I do plan to go back and read the first three in the series. The story follows Callie and Anna who co-owners of Callie’s Cakes and their friend and employee Kristie. A college student dressed as an elf is found dead on the doorstep of their business. They call the police and all of the ladies love interests arrive who are all in the police and fire department. The ladies all knew Donald the college student and attend his memorial service at the university. They overhear a number of things that he was not so nice and learn he was murdered and dumped at their shop. Why? Anna is the driving force in pushing this investigation and it was a humorous and enjoyable cozy.

This was a fun addition to the Death by Cupcakes Series. I loved getting to spend some more time with Callie, Anna, Kristie and their guys. Those three are always up to something. They just can’t manage to keep their noses out of a mystery. We got a taste of the witty humor and interesting mystery that we love from Haggerty. I hadn’t realized that this was more of a novella so I was disappointed to miss out on other aspects I love from her writing but this was definitely a cute and light read, it fit in perfectly with the rest of the series. I’d absolutely love to see more from these characters in the future.
