Kathy Harris is an author by way of a "divine detour" into the Nashville entertainment business. After graduating with a Communications degree from Southern Illinois University, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to work with a well-known gospel music quartet. A few months later, The Oak Ridge Boys began their transition into country music, and Kathy had the opportunity to help build an entertainment empire from the ground up.

She worked her way to becoming a member of the Operations Management Team, eventually heading up the company's public relations and marketing department. A lifelong fascination for books and editing led to her working as a book agent for Oak Ridge Boys' vocalist Joe Bonsall. Joe, subsequently, published a number of books, including his bestselling inspirational biography, G.I. Joe & Lillie.

For several years, Kathy freelanced entertainer biographies and wrote, as well as ghost wrote, news stories and columns for various music publications. In 2007, she sold her first Christian non-fiction story, "Walk on Water," which was included in Thomas Nelson's All My Bad Habits I Learned from Grandpa. That fall, one of her devotions was included in The One Year Life Verse Devotional, published by Tyndale House. Kathy's writing is also included in two Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

A member of American Christian Fiction Writers and former publicity officer for Middle Tennessee Christian Writers, Kathy lives near Nashville with her family and their Shiloh Shepherd dog. She regularly interviews literary and music guests on her blog, www.DivineDetour.com.

Abingdon Press released Kathy's Christian fiction debut, The Road to Mercy, in September 2012. Her first romantic suspense, Deadly Commitment, releases from New Hope Publishers in October 2019.

Kathy Harris writes an amazing page turner in Deadly Commitment. The story is exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat as I devoured this story in one sitting. There is just the right amount of romance with layers of deceit and deception. The story is written with beautiful character building in the setting of beautiful Nashville. From the start I was gripped into the story by Harris’ gifted storytelling and takes me through a satisfying ending that have me believing in hope especially for those afflicted with issues of drugs and addiction. I highly recommend this book for a fantastic read for fans of the sub-genre romantic suspense, and a fantastic thriller of a read.

Deadly Commitment
By: Kathy Harris

*REVIEW* 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Deadly Commitment is a story with many facets-romance, suspense, mystery, thriller, etc. I, however, am most interested in one of the central ideas of drug use. The story itself is engaging, entertaining and well written with relatable realistic characters. Drug use is such a relevant and important topic in society today, and so many of us are ignorant of its lasting effects on the user and his or her friends and family. I think this book is important and deserving of attention for the lasting impression it gives of user influence throughout a person's life. Even if that person is not a user, they may feel as if they are no better off than an addict. People destroyed by drugs don't always actually use drugs themselves. I'm glad that this book gave me something to think about that actually matters.

“Life had no do-overs. Only course corrections. Mistakes with fatal consequences can’t be taken back. Life lost is gone forever. But life that remains can be redeemed.”

3.5 stars for this first book in the Deadly Secrets series and the first book by Kathy Harris for me. The premise and the way the author approaches the drug world are enlightening. The cruel destructive aftermath of addiction and the hope/grace offered to those struggling for recovery are well-portrayed, personal and realistic. Danni, a driven restaurant manager with childhood insecurities, becomes a target for a drug ring boss and an interest for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation simply by her association with her boyfriend and almost-fiancé Rob. Celeb, an undercover TBI agent with his own past regrets and mistakes, becomes her protector as the issue at hand evolves and becomes bigger than they had imagined.
Though well-constructed, the story moved at a slow pace considering it is a romantic suspense and there wasn’t a lot of suspense involved (perhaps I’m quite spoiled and expect non-stop action and suspense in this genre). I unfortunately did not fully connect with the characters though Caleb, with his noble, tender-hearted nature, made for a solid hero. But I’m sure others who enjoy romantic suspense would find this book quite enjoyable.

I received a copy of the book from New Hope Publishers via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

In this romantic suspense novel, Danni doesn't realize the secondary job of her boyfriend is dealing in drugs. Favorite character was Sophie, Danni's very large and loyal dog.

Harris spins a web of intrigue, suspense, fun, and surprise in Deadly Commitment. People aren't who you think they are, which really keeps readers on their toes. That was the most exciting part for me - putting together all the pieces of the who, why, and how it all came to be. It does reference a difficult topic for some - drugs. But the truth of the matter is they are in the world, and I don't think we should leave out real topics just because they aren't "Christian" topics.

I will say that Danni and her boyfriend didn't really seem to go together to me. Almost like a forced relationship just to make the story work. I see that a lot in Hallmark movies and often think, how did these two ever get together? But that is really my only critique of the story. Once I got past that and just the let the story play out, I found myself enjoying it very much. Caleb was a much better character, obviously, and once he really entered the scene all was well.

Romantic suspense fans will devour this book. It may be my first read from Ms. Harris, but it won't be my last! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

"Why was it suddenly so hard to breathe? Because more than the weather had changed in the last three hours?"

Unsure of anything anymore, Danni Kemp is trying to make sense of it all. The man that she had dated for years and would presumably marry, is being accused of keeping dangerous secrets. Conversely, the man whom she thought was a dangerous intruder, is in fact someone who had her protection in mind. Is she in that much danger? She cannot imagine why.

Caleb Samuels is an experienced Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agent, and he is convinced that Miss Kemp's boyfriend holds the key to breaking open his entire case. What he is unsure about is her role in the entire matter; innocent bystander or an accessory to multiple state and federal crimes? And can he keep his initial attraction at bay?

What an interesting story line! In spite of a few mid-story stalls, the author's passion behind the pages becomes obvious to the reader; she subtly encourages her readers to look beneath the surface of friendships and acquaintances for hidden indicators of unhealthy behaviors, and also challenges them to become involved in helping others to recover. All this, in the middle of a spell binding romantic suspense!

"That was the problem with rough places. They couldn't be patched. They had to be completely mended or they would eventually work their way to the top again."

A commitment to do what’s right can sometimes plunge you into danger! That’s what you’ll find in Kathy Harris’ romantic suspense, Deadly Commitment. Set among the tall buildings of downtown Nashville, this southern-vibe novel introduces the reader to all sides of the drug epidemic — law enforcement seeking justice, innocent victims of other’s choices, those fighting to recover, and the drug traffickers that put everything in motion. With likable characters and a true-to-life story, this book will appeal to those who like suspense with a strong Christian message.

Main characters Danni Kemp and Caleb Samuels are at odds when they first meet. Danni defends her soon-to-be fiance’, Rob, when faced with Caleb’s accusations that Rob is a big part of a drug trafficking ring. Soon, though, her sense of right and wrong has her facing difficult truths and joining the efforts to put an end to the criminal activity around her. I really liked Caleb’s character — a man with past sins who is working hard to trust God and make the world a better and safer place. I was initially frustrated with Danni’s character. She was naive and wishy-washy, but as the book progressed she found a backbone and some smarts 😉 . Both characters struggle with baggage from their pasts that color their perceptions of themselves and others. They each lean on God for direction and protection. The book moved a little slow at first, but towards the end the action heats up and their is a good deal of danger facing all the characters.

With the news full of drug crimes, Deadly Commitment is a timely read. If you enjoy romantic suspense with a strong message of God’s grace, then you need to check it out.

Audience: adults.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Wow, this is an awesome Romantic Suspense!!! I literally could not put it down. I read it in less than a day. Then I went back and skimmed through it and read the best parts over again! This is only the second fiction book for Kathy Harris and she very quickly moved to my very favorites list!

I couldn’t figure out what Danni could see in Robert Evan’s, the man just acted fake. And being on the road all of the time, it wasn’t really that hard to figure out what was going on. I’m glad she had Caleb to look out for her. And of course with the suspense, we mostly know who the bad guys are, it’s just wondering when the big bust would be. One of the main things I like about this book is the education you get on what really happens to young people who try their hand at drugs. And what happens when businessmen as well as anyone really, can see all of that dirty money they can make. Much more than they can with a regular job. But this story also shows what happens in the end. How much I wish every young person would read books like this, and get a glimpse of the life with drugs.

I also appreciate the Christian’s in this story, living their lives in our everyday world. This story is so realistic. It’s like listening to the news or reading the newspaper. If you love a good clean romance with a lot of suspense mixed in, you will love this one.

While Deadly commitment is a romantic suspense, the story does not proceed at the breakneck pace other books in the genre do with little room to breathe. There are plenty of intense moments but there is also solid character development in this new release from Kathy Harris.

Early on, readers are made aware of at least one of the criminals. Yet, the questions continue to pile up as we try to unravel how everything connects.

Danni and Caleb are characters I would love to be friends with if they weren’t fictional. Even the supporting cast is memorable.

Another aspect of this book I enjoyed is the insider’s look into living in and around Nashville. From Broadway to Green Hills to some of the surrounding areas, Harris often had me nodding my head in agreement with Danni’s view of the city.

Fans of romantic suspense that lists more toward the romance and character insights will enjoy this one. And if you’re new to the romantic suspense genre, Deadly Commitment would be a great place to start.

The author blew my mind.
I loved the pace of the story, the author's writing style and use of words. It wasn't fast paced that gets you panting but it was steady, pulling you in little by little. I'd definitely read more books by this author.

Danni was calm, collected and a successful young woman. I loved how she carried herself through the book, even when things started to fall apart with her fiance and her life she was still calm and seeking ways to make things better. I loved how she didn't allow what happened in her childhood temper with her adulthood. I was glad when she was able to find her way back to God and fellowship with him.
My favorite character was her best friend Jaycee. She was a breath of fresh air.
I enjoyed immensely reading about the sparks that flew between her and Caleb. Oh my!
Caleb had his own issues and was trying to make up for them and a life with Danni wasn't part of the plan until he met and got to know her.
Together they brought down some very bad guys and were able to right wrongs.

This book deserves more than a 5 star from me.

I received a complimentary copy of the book and this is my honest opinion.

Kathy Harris writes some really good suspense! Imagine a book that begins with the main character having the eerie sensation that she’s being watched.
That is how Deadly Commitment begins, then its off to the races!

Danielle Kemp has that eerie feeling that someone is watching; when she spies a shabbily dressed man across from her apartment building, he meets her eyes straight on, without a flinch or looking away. He holds her gaze. A unusual series of events leads her to the identity of the stranger, but what she learns next is horrifying.

Her fiancé’ is not the man she thought, instead he is more of a stranger to her than the man who has been watching her. Danielle joins with the stranger in finding out what is going on, not because she believes the stranger but because she intends to prove him wrong. Except he’s not wrong and now her life is in danger.

A fast-paced, well-written suspense set in the beautiful city of Nashville. I highly recommend Deadly Commitment.

My Thoughts on Deadly Commitment:

This book was great.  While it has suspense and really does keep you wondering, it also reads slower than your typical suspense novel.  Oh and there's a wonderful dog that I fell in love with.  Plus there's some romance going on.

Side note.  I want a book about the chef and her story because I know she's got one and I want to hear it!

Okay, back to the book.

Danni gives us glimpses of her childhood and what it's like to be the daughter of an addict.  She's passionate about keeping drugs off the streets and out of the hands of people.  When one of her servers dies of an apparent overdose that's hitting too close to home.  But can it hit closer?

When she begins to question what her fiance does with his time she doesn't want to believe that it could be something really really bad, but the evidence is pointing that way.  She's out to prove his innocence and hopefully not get hurt in the process.

Can Danni prove him innocent or is he really and truly guilty?  And if he's guilty heaven help him because she's not going to stand for that!

Great read! I recommend this book but be prepared for some suspense and for it not to read in an hour.  Also, prepare to fall in love with the characters and be ready to read the next book. . . now!

As a native Tennessean I loved the Nashville setting of Deadly Commitment. Although not extremely familiar with the Nashville area, I have visited there several times and recognized many of the places mentioned in the story. Aside from the familiarity of the setting, I also found a riveting plot that held my interest until the very end. Well developed characters carried the story very well and the leads were very easy to like.

I loved how the author used two of the characters to illustrate how easily appearances and even actions can be deceiving with those who may seem trustworthy are actually a danger to us. I did not like Danielle’s fiance Robert who seemed to be a fake and a poser from the very beginning. I wanted to warn her against accepting his proposal. On the other hand I found Caleb to be genuine and protective. You can probably guess who I really wanted Danielle to like.

Deadly Commitment is a fast paced suspense with plenty of action, danger, and unexpected twists and surprises. I appreciated the author’s honesty in writing about the reality of drug use and how it affects not only the user but everyone in their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to the next book in this series.

As the first in the Deadly Secrets Series, this book tackles the horrific drug addiction problem and how terribly it can affect lives. Danni is in a relationship, albeit a long-distance one most of the time, with the self-absorbed Rob, a so-called “concert producer”. She finds herself at the heart of a drug investigation and in this well-written tale we watch how her comfortable life as a respectable high-end restaurant owner is turned inside out. Not only is her very life in peril, but her friends and co-workers become targets as well. It’s a very interesting look into the very real world of drug trafficking and I applaud the author for her well-researched insight.

Nashville, Tennessee is the charming setting and I especially enjoyed reading about some of the little idiosyncrasies and landscape of the city. This is a book I was unable to put down, and I highly recommend. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Deadly Commitment
The Deadly Secrets series #1
By Kathy Harris

Danni Kemp has never totally gotten over her mother's abandonment all those years ago. The memories have lingered and made her doubt herself over the years. But the one thing she's never doubted is her managerial talents at Amore's. But the time has come to break up with Rob Evans, her boyfriend of over 3 years.

In the last few weeks, Caleb Samuels has been keeping the building Danni calls home under surveillance - not that she's a suspect but she is dating someone who is...

When a late-night visitor ruins Danni's night she learns that Rob is under suspicion of being a distributor. But she can't, she won't believe a word against him. Suddenly the woman who has problems with commitment finds herself committed to a man she was about to break up with and it could get her killed.

Deadly Commitment is written in a style that will keep the reader's attention. Fans of Love Inspired Suspense will enjoy this contemporary suspense offering. The reader sees the story from the viewpoint of Danni, Rob, and Caleb so the story is well laid out and the characters as equally fleshed out.

If you love suspense that keeps building to a climactic ending you don't want to miss Deadly Commitment. It will keep you turning the pages until you get to the last page. Can you say late-night???

I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

With an emotionally packed opening scene, Deadly Commitment by Kathy Harris immediately has readers invested in what happens next. As a young child, Danielle Kemp was a witness to the trauma and pain of drug addiction, but she refuses to allow her past experiences write her future. Now, in present day Nashville, Danni, at least on paper, appears to have everything going for her: a successful and handsome music manager boyfriend, a rising career doing what she loves, a loyal canine companion, and friends that can be counted on.
However, despite the supposedly picture-perfect boyfriend, Danni has recently been harboring some doubts. Will he ever cut down on his traveling time? Do expensive gifts and lavish dinners make up for time apart and unreliable communication? While struggling with her inner back and forth dialogue, he shocks her by proposing…and then asking her to guard a large sum of money. Soon after, Danni’s life is thrown into a tailspin.
When escalating incidents lead to police involvement, Danni is introduced to Caleb, a member of the force who has been assigned to her case. With past tragedies of his own to overcome, Caleb goes above and beyond the normal realm of his duties to ensure that Danni is kept safe at all costs. As the investigation continues, their lives become increasingly intertwined, forcing Danni to critically examine her current relationship and whether it ever had any true chance at a future.
While this thriller involves little guesswork and is low on shocking twists, there is never a lull in the action. The two main characters are intensely likeable while also being realistically portrayed. I found them inspiring since they both suffered very real effects caused by drug addiction, yet they refused to be victims. I also commend the author for not skirting around the issue and portraying the unfortunately devastating and far reaching side effects that can come from drug abuse. Their strength and determination made me want to keep reading to see how they would overcome the next obstacle while remaining true to their morals and values.
Thank you to Just Read Tours and the author for selecting me to receive a free copy. This had no impact on my review.

There is nothing I enjoy reading more than a romantic suspense novel and this first book of Kathy Harris' new The Deadly Secrets series did not disappoint in the slightest. I was drawn into this story right from the start, and couldn't put it down until the very end. Now, unlike some stories in this genre that keep you on the edge of your seat with nonstop action and unanswered questions, this one was a bit different. There wasn't really much of a whodunnit to figure out, so much as just waiting to see how the story played out. We knew very early on who at least one of the bad guys was. There were certainly some moments of action throughout of course, it just wasn't the back to back moments that we may have come to expect. Though I generally do like a quick paced suspense, I must say it really worked for this story. In many ways it allowed for others aspects of the story to shine through.

One of the big topics in this story is illegal drugs. This is such a very real and important topic going on in our world today, one that is all too often glamorized by popular culture. On the flipside, so often those who have struggled with addiction are demonized. This book does a great job of showing those negative effects that drugs can play not just on the addicts, but those around them... but also reminds us that there is hope after them and that's God's grace was stronger than addiction. It was really interesting to see those effects from so many varying points of view.

What I really loved in this story was the romance! It was written wonderfully, and I really enjoyed the chemistry between the romantic leads. I could have read more and more between the two of them to be honest. While I admit that I wasn't certain about it at the beginning, the deeper into the story I read, the more I enjoyed it.

This is a great introduction to this series, and I personally cannot wait to read more! If you love a good romantic suspense, this is definitely one to check out!

** I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

“What does a TBI agent do when you can’t get a date? Kiss the confidential informant.”

As the sparks fly between Danielle Kemp, CI and Caleb Samuels, TBI, they learn to work together. Can she trust him? As she works with him to protect her fiancé there may be more to the story than she is ready to handle…

Deadly Commitment is the first book in the Deadly Secrets series by Kathy Harris. It’s a story of secrets, betrayal, murder, and deception. However, it’s also a book filled with hope, redemption, grace and romance. She weaves a tale of mystery, and yet deals with the subject of addiction and the dark world of drugs with a fresh perspective.

This is a story about Danielle Kemp and what happens when her world is flipped upside down. It opens with Danni’s mom’s battle with addiction and shows how that has affected her through her life. She’s struggling with whether to keep her fiancé or break off her engagement. She feels like someone is watching her, possibly the homeless man she passes on the street. Then she’s almost attacked and realizes there is more to the story of him watching her. As she is faced with the possibility of her fiancé’s being involved with criminal activity. She doesn’t know who to trust.

When a friend dies because of drugs, she is devastated. As the truth comes out little by little, she realizes how much danger she is in, how much drugs are impacting her community and how she wants to help. “Please. God. Don’t let me be a part of hurting someone by turning a blind eye to the problem.”

Overall, a very good read with a special emphasis on addiction and recovery, hope and grace. The mystery was well played. I felt the writing could have flowed a little better, but I loved the bones of the story and how it played out. There is a depth to this story that is well thought out and speaks to my heart. I’m looking forward to reading more by Kathy Harris.

Deadly Commitment, by Kathy Harris, is a captivating romantic suspense story. And seeing the words "The Deadly Secrets Book 1" after the title gives me great hope there is more entertainment to come. From beginning to the exciting conclusion there is edge-of-the-seat action, twists to the plot, and the tension of romance which keeps the reader's interest high. The author gives interesting glimpses into the world of a restaurant owner and that of a music band manager as well as the dark and frightening side of the illicit drug world. The characters are strong, relatable, and likable (okay not the bad guys!) I like how faith in God is woven into the lives of Danielle and Caleb. I thoroughly enjoyed this concoction of characters, setting, conflict, action, and of course, the romance. I listened to a library copy of the audiobook, and Aimee Lilly did a great job narrating the story. I was not required to write a review, and the opinions are my own.

This story sucked me in from the start, with it's prologue about Danni's past and then her future colliding with the past. When she gets the sense that she is being stalked by the homeless man outside her place, she begins to take more notice of her surrounding and realizes that things are not as they seem.
While this is a suspense title, it isn't an incredibly fast paced one, which I liked. I enjoyed getting to know Danni and her friend/coworker Jaycee (who I hope is the heroine in the next book!), as well as Caleb and Zachary. Kathy takes the time to develop their stories, as well as how their lives entwine. This is an excellent mystery to pick up!

Deadly Commitments – book one in the new The Deadly Secrets series. A fantastic and suspense filled romantic suspense that will leave you questioning everyone.

This story highlights on some touchy subjects (like illegal drugs), but it does so honest and emotional way. Bringing a bit of redemption, hope, and grace with it. The chemistry between the two love interests really helped bring this story to life.

This page turner, happens at a bit of a slower pace then the usual story in this genre, still has plenty going for it. Well written and the character development evolves in a realistic and engaging way that really pulled me into the story. A must read for suspense lovers.

I never really read mystery/suspense books because I just felt like it would be something I would like, but this book was awesome. I really enjoyed unraveling this story and watch the characters change with the story line. Danni was a very brave character I thought because I personally would be terrified to go through what she did. It was also encouraging to see Danni return to her faith in Jesus. She had went through a lot losing her mom that way and it was nice to see her helping other girls struggling with what her mom did.

'Deadly Commitment' begins with an intrigue nonstop page turning twist and edge of your seat action message...that touches on controversial issues bringing a new perspective of redemption and hope! It echoes grace through struggle, healing through heartache, forgiveness through redemption and how God can be seen at work in the lives of ordinary people. Set in Nashville Tennessee it offers both big city and Southern charm reaching back to Danni Kemp's first encounter of betrayal in her early childhood at six years of age where being awaken in the night she hears her father calling after her mother "Grace! No! You can't leave!" Completely devastated Danni is left to wonder "How can a mother turn on her family?" This is only the beginning of the deceit danger and betrayal that continues to follow Danielle in her adult life...it is filled with yet more insecurities and threatening truths she must face as yet more dangerous betrayals about her fiancé and the intimidating stalker are revealed.

What happens when the man you most trust becomes the man you should trust least—and when the man you thought dangerous becomes the one to save you?

Danni Kemp has everything going for her, including a terrific job and a handsome almost-fiancée. But when she’s suddenly thrown into the world of drugs, lies, and murder she must choose between pretending everything is still okay and facing the evil that has entered her life.

Kathy Harris does a wonderful job of creating believable characters and tossing them into a page-turning plot. And if you’re a native of Nashville—as I am—you’ll love all the details of life in the Music City.

Great book! My "go to" Christian fiction genre is romantic suspense. When I found this as a Hoopla Bonus Borrow e-audiobook, I was elated. She's a new author to me and looks like her first romantic suspense. I was not disappointed. It was as well written as the most popular authors in this CF genre. Great main characters, great storyline, interesting side stories, some suspense, a few surprises, a little bit of romance and some inspiration added in. I hope she continues to write in this genre.

Deadly Commitment is the kind of book where you get lost in the story from the first page until the last. Just when you think the characters are going to get out unscathed, Harris tosses another problem, another obstacle in their path. The ending is satisfying, and the relationships between the characters is deep and complex. Highly recommended. Leeann Betts, author of “By the Numbers” cozy mystery series.

I found this to be an intriguing story.
The level of suspense was not as high as I would have preferred, but there were enough twists and turns to keep me reading.
Danni was a wonderful heroine. I would have liked to ask her, however, why she stuck to her boyfriend Rob...and why she didn't allow herself to recognize him for who he really was.
The story progresses a bit more slowly, and is a bit more predictable then many other romantic suspense stories I've read.
The bad guys are revealed fairly early on. The whys and wherefores are what is revealed bit by bit, as the story progresses. There were some unexpected happenings, and I definitely didn't feel like I could see how the story would end before I got there.
The sobering realities of drugs and becoming addicted to riches. This story tells us about this and more.
All in all, I found this to be an enjoyable read. This new-to-me author is one that I definitely want to read more of.

I really enjoyed this book. There was really never a dull moment, the author kept the story line flowing and interesting.

Danni frustrated me at times with her too trusting spirit when it came to Rob and her wishy-washy choices when it came to being with him. However, with that being said I could see me doing the same thing, so can’t be too hard on her.

Caleb is an interesting character who I couldn’t help rooting for.

Jaycee was a fun character. I appreciated her faith and her loyalty to Danni.

Overall a very good read.
