The Pavers

Rate this book
Georgia Lee Scott has spent most of her adult life in the historic town of St. Charles, Missouri, following the safe, traditional path she thought she was always meant to pursue. After all, life was just a mindless game of checking off boxes, and then you die.

Until she did.

To her horror, she finds herself in the hospital with no memory of what happened to her or the last three years she spent at her alleged place of employment. Even more puzzling are the memories she does have…when she was supposed to be dead. Now, she’s forced to break free from her past, but nothing could prepare her for the hidden network of people and powers she'll discover as she learns more about who…or what she’s becoming.

With the help of a dangerous looking ex-Marine and a mysterious young boy, she will get to the bottom of what happened to her. Together, they are bound to find the paved path that ultimately leads to their destiny.

I'm a hopeful romantic and unrecovering chocoholic, who believes in the power of destiny and undeniable coincidence. Writing, art, calligraphy, color guard, good stories, random acts of kindness, and the grace of a new day make my heart beat a little faster.

I live in Missouri with my drop-dead gorgeous husband and hilarious son. I graduated from Lindenwood University with a B.A. in Spanish and a M.A. in Education with the full intention of teaching high school Spanish. I got all the way through the program until it was time to student-teach. I quickly realized that it was not going to be for me. Knowing what you want out of life, and how you can use your gifts in the right places is harder than it looks.

After a terrifying near-death experience, and an unmistakably powerful vision, I started to write. Writing was something I always did as a child, and even into my adulthood. I composed my teaching philosophy in the format of a poem of all things. But this time it felt like I had finally figured out where my energy should have been going all along. I wrote for me, but I loved the story so much...I thought I just might share it.

It's my first time on Good Reads. I always am captured by the book cover and when I saw The Pavers, it was like my imagination dove into its world. I took a chance and it was worth it. Georgia and her posse of "God-Given talents" (pun intended) go through a series of self discovery, love, betrayal, action, mystery and spiritual team work. The author really captures her characters good will and the intent God has for them. Is there a second one coming out? How long must I wait??!

An unusual urban Fantasy novel. It has a peculiar mix of covert operations, Christian mythology, lots of action and a certain taste for romance.
Me middle part is a bit convoluted, bit it all comes together eventually.
For a first work, I think it's pretty solid and very entertaining.

Characters were very well developed! The end was satisfying yet left me wanting more. Can’t wait to see what else Dana Hoff comes out with.

I am going to start with - I really wanted to love this book and I do think it started off strong. I feel like it could have been phenomenal with a bit more character and plot development.

I didn't realize it was going to be about God and how he works his miracles through people. It wasn't at all what I gleaned from the book's description. I am not religious, but was raised to be. It didn't scare me away! I continued on, intrigued by the idea.

Graham has so many friends that I don't even remember half of them, they really don't seem to add that much to the story. I do think a few friends from his military days would make sense... but 7? And to have all of them, plus Mia, come traveling with him and Georgia on their trip to locate Jack was overkill. I think instead of having all of these extra filler characters on the adventure, it took away from the chance to develop the main characters further.

Right away in the beginning, Georgia's doctor (who just so happens to be an ex-Paver) warns her that it's a secret and that it could be dangerous to even talk about it (even though the two of them are Pavers and alone) so then in the next chapter she and Graham tell 8 people who are just mundane humans about their big secret... and it's okay, because then Georgia's parents and her assailant are also Pavers and then the head Paver is also okay with it and decides not to erase their friends memories.

I am just left feeling kind of underwhelmed after having such anticipation of the book cover and the synopsis. 🤷‍♀️ I do appreciate the authors writing style and descriptions, so I would probably check out any future books she publishes!

The Pavers is not in my typical reading wheelhouse but I was ecstatic to read it when I heard it was Dana's first novel and it did not disappoint! Georgia's voice and enthusiasm ripples through the whole book, and the story is riveting and kept me on my toes. I absolutely couldn't put it down for the last 1/3. While it started off a little verbose for me personally, the more the characters and story developed, the more comfortable and confident the language became. The storytelling is phenomenal, fresh and unexpected with elements of romance, mystery, action and spirituality. Amazing debut, Dana, this book has everything!

Beautiful crafted, with turns I didn’t see coming! I loved picturing the places they went on their journey... and I fell in love with each character. A little different than my normal read, but so happy I took the leap.

The author writes so smoothly, and catches the readers attention with the little things. Definitely has a place on my bookshelf.... and hope that there is a future for Georgia Lee and her tribe!

I had the HONOR of reading this book and I finished it in two days - to say the least I thoroughly enjoyed it! I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations! I ABSOLUTELY loved the whole idea behind The Pavers: a novel idea about destiny while including a splash of humor, romance, and mystery. It had me laughing and gasping, it gave me heartbreak yet made my heart smile. I love a book that can keep me on the edge of the seat, be light-hearted, and be relatable all at once and The Pavers did just that. I could seriously go on and on but all in all I HIGHLY recommend giving this book a read!!!

This book is a different genre than what I usually read. I am trying to expand my reading list and I am glad I took a chance on this book! The main character Georgia starts out as a confused lost soul. She goes thru a complete transformation as she deals with questions about her life (and death?) You can see the strong woman Georgia becomes as the answers to her questions begin to unveil throughout this book. It is a keep you on the edge of your seat story!

I loved The Pavers so much that I couldn't put it down! Right from the beginning, you are pulled into a reality you've never seen before. Suspense, romance, mystery, this book has everything you could want. The storyline was thoughtfully set up so there could potentially be a sequel (or a series!). Cant wait to read more!

This book was the January - February 2021 Lindenwood Book Club pick. I had so much fun reading it, and discussing it with the book club. One of my favorite thing about reading books for book club is that our picks tend to stretch my reading outside of my typical favorite genres. The Pavers is an urban fantasy that opens with Georgia, a 20-something waking up in a hospital, then meets a couple men, and a young boy. One man has an important message for her that completely changes her life. She is trying to grasp it all when she realizes, she is outside of her own body being medically-treated in the hospital. When she comes to, inside her own body, she has to learn her new role, and learn what being alive really means. A big-hearted book full of friendship, self-discovery, dark mysteries, romance, and slow reveals of the fantastical world of "paving." I am thrilled that the author is an alumna and staff member at Lindenwood University! I don't typically read fantasy and Dana Hoff made it fun to step outside of my reading comfort zone!

Decided to pick up a book from a local author in my area and was so incredibly in love with the story I had to share!
It was a quick read that sucked me in from the first page—quick paced with enough mystery to keep you engaged in the story. It’s adult fiction that gives a really great take on the whole “angels among us” idea while balancing perfectly between slightly supernatural, God/Heaven oriented without being religious or preachy if you’re not into that, and everything happens for a reason.
It was a feel good, HEA with exciting plot points all the way to the last few pages. I was so sad it ended!

Please go give this author some love!

I really enjoyed reading this book! It is a romance, full of mysteries, and filled with inspirational messages :) It is hard not to read it in one sitting! I'm expecting that Dana will write another book to continue this story; we still need to know a lot about Georgia's new life!

Pretty good overall

I really liked the first part of the book. The second part was overly emotional and felt like it was trying to pull heartstrings on every page. I was really frustrated with the turn because there was so much potential.
