Encopresis— you can beat it!: Game-changing solutions for Toilet Anxiety, Soiling, and Constipation in Children

Rate this book

“My child asks for a diaper every time she needs to poop.”

“My child never poops in the toilet; only in his pants.”

“My child has to release some feces in his pants before going to the toilet.”

“My child withholds his poo for days to the point where he can’t eat or move.”

“I am exhausted by the useless trials of offering rewards, giving stool softeners, giving reminders, comparing my child to others, and being furious.”

If any of those statements sound familiar, this is exactly the book for you.

Dr. Baruch Kushnir presents here a description of his intervention model that has freed thousands of children from encopresis by pinpointing 3 different groups:

Toilet anxiety: Children who can only poop in a diaper or in their pants. Soiling: Children who can use the toilet for defecation but also release feces into their pants. Soiling and prolonged constipation: Children who refrain from having a bowel movement for many days or even weeks.

For each group, he provides a unique, practical, effective, step-by-step program for parents to carry-out.

Dr. Baruch Kushnir explains to parents the pointlessness of their repetitive trials of offering rewards, giving stool softeners, giving reminders, becoming angry, comparing their child to others, reading books, etc.In his clinic and in this book, he makes a point of releasing parents and children from the vicious cycle of doing more and more of the same useless, distressing, and damaging actions. Instead, he presents creative, innovative, and effective interventions. Chapter 5 of the book is dedicated to sensitive toilet training and provides a list of Dos and Don’ts to avoid crucial parenting mistakes.

Very educational

I never knew there was a technical term for children who have trouble going to the bathroom on the toilet. This has been a truly eye-opening book. It’s so sad to think about kids who suffer from this ailment will suffer physically and psychologically. But thankfully, there is help out there. Starting with desensitization, it may seem unconventional, but it works. You really have to understand the issue and where the anxiety comes from. It’s also important for parents to remember to respond to any type of progress in a child. Great tips.

So helpful! Now to implement the program. This book was written by the same doctor who came up with the beeper for bed wetting program. He dedicated just as much study to this other side of things as he did initially for bed wetting. His patients seem to experience lots of success, and I can only hope as much for us too. But I do wish there was a bright, cute cover page on Goodreads that looks like the bright and cute actual cover of the book.

Great for educators & parents!

I wish my parents could have read this book when I was young! This provides a great understanding of the thought processes behind toilet anxiety and other problems. This book emphasizes the importance of the sensory environment of going to the bathroom, which can be a major trigger for anxiety. My only critique of this book is the frequent typos, however they do not stop the book from being easy to read.

Very few topics are unfamiliar to me, but this one was completely new. As I delved deeper into the material, I found it incredibly intriguing and thought-provoking. This is exactly why books exist - to broaden our knowledge and perspectives, and this read did just that.

The author is highly knowledgeable on this topic and has an astonishing success rate. Any reader who picks up this book will undoubtedly gain a thorough understanding of Encopresis, its root causes, and effective strategies for managing and overcoming the condition in a healthy manner.

What drew me in the most about this piece was its profound insight into a child's mindset and the source of anxiety related to this issue and others like it. Even though I have never personally experienced this specific condition, reading this piece made me reflect on my childhood. The author's examination of the underlying cause made me feel seen and heard, which is incredibly impactful.

This book is a valuable resource for parents who have experience dealing with a child struggling with encopresis. It also offers insight into the serious effects of anxiety on a child's physical, mental, and social well-being.
