DAWN OF X! The X-Men find themselves in a whole new world of possibility… and things have never been better! Jonathan Hickman (HOUSE OF X, POWERS OF X, SECRET WARS) and superstar artist Leinil Yu (NEW AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA) reveal the saga of Cyclops and his hand-picked squad of mutant powerhouses!
Jonathan Hickman is an American comic book writer and artist. He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF, and S.H.I.E.L.D. titles. In 2013, Hickman wrote a six-part miniseries, Infinity, plus Avengers tie-ins for Marvel Comics. In 2015, he wrote the crossover event Secret Wars. - Wikipedia
Hmm, looks like Orchis will be the adversary for a while, they lost their last stronghold on Earth, but they still have the forge orbiting the sun, where the X-men died in House of X. Red flag for me, a drama waiting to happen, is how Wolverine is living in the same habitat as the summers family, dude has a long history of being in love with Jean, not giving any fucks that she is married, and if this sounds bad, wait till you hear that Jean's room is in the middle room between his and Scott's rooms, someone is getting cheated on in the near future, the sinister secret pointed to that. It was really nice hearing Cable call Jean, mother! That's been a long time comings, and we have it here in Dawn of X. Also I totally didn't reach the Vulcan being the third summers brother storyline yet in my old X-men reads, it's nice to get to know him. Also Rachel summers is called Prestige now? And she is dressed like Squirrel girl! Another red flag is the almost worship behavior many mutants met Magneto with, that's going to cause trouble in paradise eventually, it's just bad news waiting to happen. Anyway, I think this sets the tone nice for the rest of the series and what to expect, and I won't be expecting the level that many of house of X or power of X issues reached for me.
Hickman is set on making X-Men the MUST BUY comic. Like he did for Avengers and Fantastic Four, this is Hickman's version of the characters we all know and love.
This is mostly focused on Scott and the world building of this new island they all live on. There's couple of cool action moments at the start but this is mostly a quiet arc. We get to see the living arrangements, what everyone is up to, and how everyone is working together to live. With plenty of humorous moments mixed with awesome character development.
The stuff with the villains is the only part I wasn't feeling. Which is odd because I usually like Hickman's villains.
The Dawn of X begins... so hyped for all these series. This first issue starts with my main guy Cyclops in top shape, doing some shiny new moves, releasing some new mutants along with Storm and Magneto, who seems to be growing a godlike ego again, dangerous. We meet the new villains, with some familiar faces, and then we go back to Krakoa to get an introduction to the Summers house, where all the Summers join up for dinner, pretty dope.
Could've been perfect, if not for the new Jean/Cyke/Wolverine relationship, super cringey.
Thanks Hickman, for making the X-Men exciting again!
The mutants are settled on Krakoa, including the X-Men, although issues arise, issues that will eventually lead to the launching of the Marauders series. Issues like children being kidnapped, held against their will and away from Krakoa, and so the X-Men go rescue them.
Meanwhile, as always, fearful humans plot against the future being mutant: if humanity is evolving past those without power, where does that leave those alive, without mutant gifts? And this is the crux of the matter and why people keep coming back to fight the X-Men.
A great start to the new xmen run. Cyclops and co are on a mission then return home to the Summer House. A big setup story of the chatacters etc. Cant wait for the next
Any future Marvel work by Jonathan Hickman would need to be compared to his excellent Fantastic Four run. His new work is on the entire X-Men franchise and he's handling the writing duties on the flagship book X-Men. Already, he's dipping into his FF notes with this first issue.
The FF comparisons are easy, here the Summers clan is the main focus, vis-à-vis the Richards family. You have multiple uncles living in the family abode, and even the children are time-displaced versions of themselves.
Regardless, there aren't any indicators that this would be a rehash of FF, this has too many moving parts and has the potential to be much grander epic. It is also not bad to have the excellent team of Leinil Yu and Gerry Alanguilan handling the art chores.
It’s Hickman’s new generation of X-Men and I’m very very interested. I have a feeling this is going to be a very long and amazing run. What Hickman has done for X-Men in House and Powers of X is already better than the last 15 years of X-Men so I have a lot of faith that this run will be one of the most essential runs in comics.
Cyclops has his house on the moon thanks to his krakoan plant. Lenil Francis Yu’s art is top notch as always. Logan, Jean and Scott may or may not be having threesomes, Scott feeling optimistic is a breath of fresh air after HoX.

Very promising start for the new series, part of a collection of series, not sure yet how they will be related, but there will be six series following the end of the Powers/House of X. This one was great, typical but well done X-Men comic!
House of X and Powers of X were pretty serious. Thankfully, X-Men #1 has a more lighthearted beginning. The best part is the House of Summers--which is on the moon.
I know I'm a monster but I feel like I just can't get into Hickman's writing style. I've tried really hard but there's so much going on and it's always just so deep, both issue to issue and in the wider scope. To be fair, I appreciate what I've read from him, it's always a really cool, well thought out storyline, always pretty cinematic, but the writing is just difficult for me personally I guess. I'm still excited to get into this new X-Men run though, I hope I'll get won over.
Not as good as the Powers of X or House of X, or the last of the Uncanny X-men by Rosenberg. Although at least there's no deaths or angst. Unless you count the people in Orchis, and I'm not certain they were killed.
The comic felt off -- from a character perspective. And I can't quite put my finger on why, except that everyone is getting along a bit too well. Vulcan, Kid Cable, Rachel (Prestige), Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Wolverine (???), Corsair, and the Star Jammers along with Havoc all getting along with no issues in a biom on the moon? Okay. What worked in the X-men was the soap operaish relationship drama. That's what kept readers. The other stuff? Eh. Did any of us really read it for the fights with evil humans or fights with evil mutants? And that's not quite there...they are too happy.
And the happiness feels just a tad cultish. Also Cyclops back story doesn't quite fit with what we know, nor does Cable's almost as if has been tweaked somehow.
It feels like full reboot, but is it? I don't know Hickman's work well enough to know how much of this is intentional?
I'm hanging in there to see where it leads. But admit to being ever so slightly disappointed in this issue.
Seems like Hickman is just carefully laying the foundation for future X-Men stories in this one. Wasn't as mind-blowing as HoX #1 but still looks pretty promising. There are so many hints and characters that look like they might be pivotal plot points in future.
Artwork: grittier than what I've been spoiled with, thanks to HoX/PoX. Yu's drawings take a while to adjust to as they're unlike the clean lines of Silva and Larraz. No Studio-Ghibliesque scenes or landscapes in this issue. But the fantastic colors are still reminiscent of HoX/PoX and the figures are (mostly) beautiful to look at.
Ok short gossipy side note: so Jean, Cyclops, and Wolverine are now in a polygamous relationship or…?
As someone who has joined the comic book catch-up gang, I think there is somewhat of a skewed perspective when reading issues as they come out. This start was somewhat weak, and characters seemed to vomit lore and exposition constantly. Whenever there was casual banter, it seemed forced. However, the quality of the lore and art has stayed strong from House and Powers. This has, however, has kept the overflowing character roster quite inaccessible.

"So, sure, I'm a fighter -- I will never stop fighting for what I believe in... But, I also live here, surrounded by the people I love. So I'm done focusing on the things that want me dead -- And I'm choosing to spend my days focused on the things that make me want to live."
This first issue rides the conflict down a little bit after the mind bending HOX and POX, and does that to its benefit. We spend a little more time with Scott and his family and see how the migration to Krakoa affects HIM, rather than how it affects US (the rest of the world). Would like to see a villain taking a bit more of a role but with the way Hickman writes, I’m not worried about a boring middle or ending.
Ok so Corsair is alive how? And Vulcan is no longer the emperor? I’m so confused. But I am enjoying the new status for the mutant race. Let’s not even mention how Logan, Scott, and Jean has adjoining rooms. Wow. So no Emma? 👌🏾

Really cool concepts, some good character moments, though Storm seems off-character to me, but not a lot happening considering it was 40 pages. The art was good though muddled on a few panels and a couple panels of bad coloring. Overall a good read.
Goodreads missing the version of reign of x vol. 1 Im reading on here 😭. Pretty ok start, my friend told me I probably won’t like this as much as house/power. I love Scott but he told me they haven’t stopped making him an asshole but we’ll see!
