Brennan Clayton lived a life of privilege and comfort, until experimenting with drugs in college led to him quitting school to live the life of an addict. His days are spent doing odd jobs for cash to pay for his habit. One night, he overdoses and nearly dies. Doctor Lucas Martel works nightshift in the emergency room at Eureka Hospital. He’s reclusive and brilliant at his job, and he’s all too aware that not everything in Eureka is as it seems. He’s also a vampire, one who chooses to blend in with humans rather than feed on them. Something strange is happening to the homeless and addicts on the streets of Eureka; many have gone missing or ended up dead, and others have overdosed on drugs so strong, no human cure can counteract them. Not normally concerned with human tragedies, the vampires can’t stand back and let this play out, or they risk exposing their world to the humans. Brennan must face his demons, and Lucas will discover many things about himself, and what he believes to be true: a seedy underground of rogue vampires and drugs that must be stopped, at any cost. *Warning: contains references to drug use and abuse.
Brennan should have been, for all accounts, just one of fleeting, never to be seen again, many addicts that passed through the ER of the hospital where Lucas worked. But he stopped being just a part of the crowd when the vampire doctor saw him. That's what I enjoyed most about this book, the way BL Maxwell made Brennan special through Lucas's eyes. He became someone worth attention and affection, someone valuable. Not only that, he started to see himself beyond the addiction, to acknowledge his self worth again.
I liked how the development of the relationship between Lucas and Brennan was weaven with the mystery of who's been pushing a strange drug on the streets. It became even more imperative to find the culprit, once it was obvious that Brennan's life was at stake. It turned the plot into an suspenseful hunt, with an unexpected outcome.
Burning Addiction offers an interesting new vampire populated world, one I hope I'll see more of. I think Ben needs his story, too(hint to the author, lol).
I loved this vampire story by BL Maxwell. Burning Addictions starts out as a story of, well, addiction. Brennan has sort of given up on life as he has progressively abandoned every meaningful thing (school, family and friends) due to his drug addiction. When he od’s and ends up in the hospital he meets Lucas, a vampire working as a night-shift ER doctor. The two of them are inexplicably drawn to each other and together they try to understand what is happening with the city’s increasingly large and out of control drug population. Action, fated mates and a protective vampire, what could you want more?
Whenever I read a paranormal romance by BL Maxwell, I know it’s going to surprise and intrigue me. Burning Addiction didn’t disappoint. Its unexpected yet delightful and complex characters kept me reading late into the night. Brennan hasn’t had an easy life and his struggles hurt my heart. Lucas, who is extremely understanding and patient, is exactly what he needs in life, in more than one way. He’s the ultimate protector. I enjoyed watching these two fall for each other and the mystery along with its reveal caught me by surprise. I hope we see these characters again as someone needs their story told. A vampire love story that will leave you burning for more.
Audio Review 2021 🎧 Narrated by Allen Jefferies 3.5 stars Brilliantly voiced with different vocals for each character especially with the men in this. The female characters where hard on the ears to listen to which I reverted back to reading the ebook.
A good start as Doc Lucas helped a young man survive from drugs OD in emergency room. Lucas soon gets knowledge of rouge vampires using humans as their drug highs. His friend Ben was charged to investigate what was happening especially with missing people for the Consortium. Time jumps back included with each character povs telling their side wasn't my thing that I liked. The hot and cold from Brennan regarding his Doctor in unknown feelings I don't know. Overall an okay story which I would have liked to love but it wasn't to be.
Doc Lucas was a vampire and helped humans in the hospitals. He felt a pull to Brennan that he dared react too. Brennan was brought into the emergency department barely hanging on to life from OD'd.
----------------------------------------- 2020 Review Mixed thoughts on this one and difficult to rate. A good start to the book as Doc Lucas admits Brennan in hospital after ODing on drugs. As chapters progresses from one pov to the other some scenes are a bit repeative in the story which i thought where going around in circles. The promise of the book had potential but it failed for me to enjoy. Good vampires (Lucas and Ben) against something bad killing the homeless drug addicts.
DNF at 18%. I just couldn’t get into it even though their was potential for a cool story. I also am really not into “mates” where the characters have no choice.
Writer BL Maxwell's epic ability to mix the scary with the lovable, the super hot with the absolutely adorable has had me going around in circles for the past four months. 'Burning Addiction' is an exceptional example of the author's adeptness in this unique blending of literary elements with the pacing that keeps the narrative rolling right along. In the story, we encounter Dr. Lucas Martel who races to help Brennan Clayton, a patient who has overdosed on heroin. But the Narcan, a drug used to counteract the heroin, had to be used at double the dose causing the patient convulsive seizures. But this isn't the first patient that's had this experience and many have died recently when the double dose of Narcan forms a lethal cocktail in the bloodstream of addicts. Brennan was one of the lucky ones to survive so he leaves the hospital only to find himself getting high yet again. Brennan is fortunate enough to still have a friend in the world who cares whether he has a safe place to sleep and food to eat. In spite of his heroin addiction, Brennan works a job on a fishing boat to pay for his drugs. He also gives some money to his friend towards the rent and respects his friend enough to take his drug use off to a dark park at night. Unfortunately, Brennan finds himself in the hospital again with another overdose and a very concerned Dr. Martel who felt drawn toward Brennan the first time he came into the hospital. Intuiting tampering with the drugs by others who, like him, are vampires, Dr. Martel endeavors to look after Brennan though Brennan seems indifferent to life. Good friend Ben shows up at Lucas's home and tells him about a mission he's on for The Twelve of the Consortium of Blood, the agency that governs the behavior of vampires, especially any that will call attention to vampires in the world. It seems that there's widespread consumption of blood from humans drugged with an altered form of heroin going on among vampires. It contributing to fatal overdoses and the disappearances of many homeless addicts in other major cities, as well. Lucas becomes concerned for Brennan's safety and makes several attempts to interact with him personally. When Brennan is physically attacked, Lucas interrupts the assailant then takes Brennan home where the intimacy between them develops. Lucas and Ben find Brennan drained of blood and nearly dead when the assailant finally manages to abduct him. Lucas turns him into a vampire to avoid losing him altogether. With the change, Brennan is finally free of his addiction to heroin and though life is different for him, he is grateful and ready to submit to the mating bite, which will link the two permanently. The perpetrator of the blood drugging scheme turned out to be someone from Lucas's long ago who faces the full censure of the Consortium and is subsequently destroyed. Lucas and Brennan decide to leave the area to begin their lives together someplace new. This book tied me neatly in knots. I sew and design for three incredible drag queens that sat quietly for this audiobook, loving every second of it as I did! BL Maxwell's take on addiction is a true one! Brennan does legitimate work to earn the money for his heroin. Believe it or not, such addicts do exist! I took an addiction counseling program to supplement my Bachelor's degree in Psychology, even went so far as taking the graduate courses required for licensure. There ARE addicts that exist who wouldn't dream of hurting another living soul. They don't lie, steal, cheat, or kill! They are simply caught up in the personal escape drugs offer. And more often than not, they do more harm to themselves than they'd ever do to anyone else. There are those addicts kind and gentle enough that they manage to have a few friends and can attract one or more persons who are invested in them beating their addiction. The writer communicates this effectively in her story! I love that the author wrote a story of addiction that did not get too overly dark and depressing, those aspects of the story are truly scary. Vampires running at speeds the human eye can't track. Drugs designed to get a human high enough that their blood is a drug for vampires? My goodness! She brilliantly takes the reader right to the edge of death and total despair before the story resolves beautifully in a happily ever after for addict Brennan Clayton. Combining this wonderful story with the unique reading talents of narrator Allan Jeffries, this audiobook is a special treat for those who love their horror with an infusion of the definitely lovely.
**3.5** I was intrigued by the plot of this book with a vampire who is also a doctor, coming across someone who is possibly his mate but is also a drug addict who doesn't want help. It sounds quite dark, and in places it is, but Lucas is determined to help Brennan any way he can, especially with the mystery of missing people and deaths going on. I'll admit that I found it hard to connect to the relationship between the two MC's. For me, I didn't really get this sense of connection or chemistry between them which, considering they are mates, I would have thought that would be one of the main factors. It's hard for Brennan with how he flits between being high and not, his timeline is a little skewed but he gets the general essence of protectiveness that Lucas has over him. Some may find certain parts of this book hard to read as there is on page drug use and some withdrawal symptoms whilst Brennan is in hospital. It's tough as it really gets across how much he has come to rely on getting that next hit, how it's overtaken everything else in his life including college, family and friends. Lucas isn't the first to try and help Brennan but his focus and constant need to protect him, plus that little thing of vampirism/fated mates gives him an extra advantage. I like the plot of the book and the mystery surrounding what is happening with the missing people and the higher number of deaths in the local homeless population. Lucas's friend, Ben, who works for The Consortium, the ruling body of the vampire world (I think), turns up to find out what is going on and also helps Lucas with keeping Brennan safe. It becomes a lot more than just a random group of vampires trying to get high but that in itself brings more danger to them. Overall, this book has an engaging story but it lost me a bit when it came to the relationship. I will be reading the next in the series as I am hoping that Ben finds his mate as it was clear that is something he has been yearning for but his clandestine work with The Consortium has kept him more than busy and in the shadows.
I really debated how to rate this book because I really did like it - for about 75% of the way in. The author did a great job of world building and character development and the story is a completely unique idea. Rogue vampires are spiking drugs and selling them to drug addicts, only to turn around and abduct them once they've used enough of the drug. Lucas, is a doctor and a vampire, that tries to help a young drug addict that seemingly overdoses. Brennan has had a really hard life and doesn't care about much except for his next fix. When these two meet it becomes more than doctor/patient and more than either is really prepared for. There was so much detail in this book and I was totally engrossed until about 25% to the end. It felt like the author suddenly had a time crunch to finish and just sort of rushed through to the ending. Although the plot was mostly wrapped up, it didn't feel cohesive to the rest of the book. The characters that were so three dimensional through the first two-thirds, were suddenly flat and rather two dimensional. It just fell a little bit short and I was left wishing it had been a bit longer and more drawn out. Despite that, I really did like this and it's definitely worth reading. The storyline alone is very intriguing and I've not read anything like this before.
This is the first book in The Consortium Trilogy, I read it had vampires and started listening straight away. This series has an overall story arc about a rogue vampire who uses drug addicts for his own gain.
This book has Lucas, a vampire and ER doctor, and Brennan, a human and addict, as the MC's. Lucas find Brennan in hospital when he had an od. Lucas notices there is a strong lure to Brennan, but he is surprised since he already had a "fated' mate. Things turn out not as they seemed and it is a reveting read till the end. And leaves want to now more. Lucas and Brennan find their hea for real.
For the audiobook: Allen Jeffries is a new to me narrator and I had to adjust, at the beginning, to his enthousiasme. I enjoyed the most of his narration for the characters, but some are a bit much but I liked them 5*📚 4,5* narration, overall 5*
I was given a copy by the author and I am leaving my honest review.
Burning Addiction is Book 1 in the Consortium Trilogy series. This is a vampire love story with a bit of a mystery. Brennan is an addict who overdoses and ends up in hospital. Lucas is the doctor who helps save his life. Feeling a connection to Brennan, Lucas keeps an eye on him when he can. There's definitely more going on here as homeless and addicts start disappearing. Rogue vampires thinking they'll target people who won't be missed, with their stonger drugs to drain them, messed with the wrong human. Lucas and his friend Ben go on the hunt to stop what's been happening and find out way more than they expected. I enjoyed this book, though the ending was a bit rushed. I look forward to the next book and more from this world. Narrator Allen Jeffries does a wonderful job and has a unique way of storytelling. He drew me into the story from the very beginning.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 stars rounded down to 3 as there was a good background to this story, but there are issues with the story itself.
Why is someone who is not covered by insurance and with no contact details in a separate room in the hospital? Twice? Particularly as this is USA?
Who called in Brennan's collapse in the woods, no mention of anyone?
The sequence of events are fairly muddy and with a lot of loose ends leading to questions. E.g. Brennan's father giving money to the landlord to help Brennan without knowing, did Sean the renter of the flat know? And both Sean and Lucas abandon their homes to go somewhere else, no provision is made for getting rid of them, everything is magically organised without being mentioned.
I would have liked to give 4 stars as the backstory is interesting, but too many flaws for continuity. Hopefully the series will improve.
I enjoyed listening to this paranormal story. It has mystery, action, romance, fated mates and a great cast of characters. Lucas is caring and compassionate looking after everyone else. Brennan is a drug addict living for his next fix. The emotional moments between these two even when Brennan is pushing Lucas away tugged at my heart!
The narration by Allen Jefferies was good but it took me a little time to warm up to. The female impressions were rough on my ears (luckily these are limited to the beginning). I honestly wasn't sure where to rate it because once the female characters were out of the picture I settled in and enjoyed. (I should point out that my ears have always done better with smoother, lower and richer tones so this is just me and my preference / comfort) I thought the energy and emotions were well done!
This is book 1 in the series the Consortium Trilogy by BL Maxwell, narrated by Allen Jefferies.
What a great vampire romance with a bit of mystery and intrigue thrown in.
The main characters are a human addict Brennan and vampire doctor Lucas, who's living his life as a human. They do not have the normal fun meet cute, it's just the opposite in fact when Lucas ends up saving Brennan's life after a drug overdose.
We are also introduced to the consortium but you'll have to read or listen to the book to find out more. I definitely do not believe in spoilers!!!
Vampire/human, mates, drug overdose, drug dealers, and a mystery to untangle
Vampires are an addiction for me and so are BL Maxwell's books! I love all of her books and was thrilled to hear that Burning Addiction was coming out. It's a really different spin on her usual vampire tales and there were some plot twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I think I was still coming down from my high after re-reading her Blood Beneath Stone series so making the leap into Burning Addiction was great. Lucas and Brennan have a rough beginning but nothing says love like a HEA for these two. Ben's a great friend as well. I'm excited to see if Ben gets his own story.
I loved this book. Brennan Clayton choices led him to where he is. He lived a good life until experimenting with drugs in college. He overdoses and ends up in a Eureka hospital. Doctor Lucas Martel works the nightshift at the hospital and is also a vampire. He is there when they bring Brennan in and brings him back. But something is happening to the homeless and addicts in town. And the vampires believe rogue vampires are behind it. Brennan must face his past. And Lucas does everything he can to save Brennan. But the question is can he?
The difference between truth and myth is in what you choose to believe.
Everyone has secrets. Some are small, like where they hide their Halloween candy, money, or drugs.
Some are big, like how they swindled the bank out of their mansion, or converted someone's inheritance into their personal fortune.
Relationships and marriages link families and friends until greed or cheating doth us part.
Vampires and humans have their differences, but greed, power, and blood determines most resulting outcomes. But true mates are bonded together forever as long as they live or die.
I enjoyed this story, though I will admit that I had a difficult time in the beginning with the narration with the inflection but once I got accustomed, I enjoyed it. The premise of the story was interesting and Brennon’s addictive behaviors were spot on, I wanted to smack him and Lucas’ drive was intense. At the end of the day. HEA is a possibility. A good listen. (This was the audible edition)
I enjoyed this story, Lucas and Brennan were drawn to each other from the beginning, even though he didn’t want to Brennan did listen to and let Lucas help him even if he kept running away, I’m glad they got to be together. Looking forward to reading Ben’s story next.
I really enjoyed this story and can't t to read the rest of the series. The story of Lucas and Brennan was excellent. I loved the hope that Lucas started to instill in Brennan even after he had given up on life completely and saw no end to his life of addiction.
Everything moved too fast. Hey you’re a vampire now, oh okay cool. Also we’re bonded and madly in love, oh okay cool. Also here’s this big issue, Never mind it’s okay now. 🧛🧛
Wow, I was not expecting this book to be so encapsulating. Not having read the blurb, I went straight in and listened. The narrator was excellent. Very clear and easy to listen to.
We meet Brennan, a drug user, just before he ends up in hospital with an overdose of street drugs.
Lucas was his doctor and felt drawn towards Brennan as soon as he saw him lying on the hospital bed.
This story takes us through a journey from hunting drug dealers to helping an addict. Vampires and the seedy underworld loved this book, well written and thoroughly enjoyable.
Excellent narration from Allen Jeffries. Very clear and easy to listen to. Although, like usual, I sped up the audio, and I listened at 1.40 speed on audible, but I do prefer all my audios to be a little quicker.
