Fairfax Twins #3

The Importance of Being Eunice

Rate this book
A duke, a spinster, a faux engagement; what could possibly go wrong?

For four seasons Lady Eunice was quite content with the mantle of wallflower. Bespectacled, frumpy, and put-upon by her overbearing mother, all she really wished to do was vanish from London once she came of age to inherit her fortune.
The sudden reappearance of her childhood sweetheart, the dashing Theodore Belhurst, soon changes her mind, and Lady Eunice decides that she does wish to wed after all.
But how does a girl so unremarkable, she's often referred to as "Lady Who?" attract the attention of society's favoured son? Why, she enlists the help of a duke, of course! A faux engagement to the arrogant, abrasive, and sinfully handsome Duke of Belmont is certain to make Theodore notice her.

Never mind that she had to bribe the man into agreeing to her proposal, nor the fact that she cannot stand his haughty ways, as long as he helps her win Theodore's heart, Eunice decides she can stomach pretending to be his betrothed for as long as is needed. But when she begins to see beneath the duke's hard exterior, to the wounded man beneath, Eunice begins to wonder if she's actually chasing the wrong man...

Aubyn Euripides Charles Cantwell, Sixth Duke of Belmont, was not looking to enter into a faux engagement, but when a meddling spinster suggests such a thing and threatens his operation as a spy for the Crown, he finds himself in just such a situation.
Despite his initial reluctance for the hare-brained scheme, Aubyn soon finds himself enchanted by the kind and brave Lady Eunice. A turbulent childhood had left him scarred, and uncertain that he could ever marry, but as Eunice delights in revealing his soft side, Aubyn wonders if perhaps she might be the woman to set him free from his dark past.

As the weeks pass and Eunice grows ever closer to snaring the charming but irresponsible Theodore, Aubyn realises that he must act quickly to ensure he does not lose his faux fiancée.

This sweet, laugh-out-loud, Regency Romance is the third book in The Fairfax Twins Series but can be read as a standalone novel. If you adore romances with humour, wit, and a super sweet ending, you're sure to love this great read!

No rating as I quit after chapter 3. I’m just not interested in romance that features a hero who’s “in between mistresses” and is mean and condescending to boot. Just in one chapter he thinks about beautiful his mistresses have been and declares that now one would believe that he’s courting plain old Eunice. Poor her. She’s so lovely and really deserves better.

What a sweet little regency romance!

Story: For four seasons Lady Eunice was quite content with the mantle of wallflower. Bespectacled and put-upon by her overbearing mother, all she really wished to do was vanish from London once she came of age to inherit her fortune. The sudden reappearance of her childhood sweetheart, the dashing Theodore Belhurst, soon changes her mind, and Lady Eunice decides that she does wish to wed after all. A faux engagement to the arrogant, abrasive, and sinfully handsome Duke of Belmont is certain to make Theodore notice her.

This goes against my normal reading material, as it’s free of any or all sexy or even suggestive scenes. The height of it all is some kissing at the end. Still I’m taken with this book as it’s well written and has some lovely characters. I found myself reading it in only two days! It’s the third book in a series, but can be read without any knowledge of the first two! But I will start on them now.
Just one complaint: the use of ‘Lud’ and ‘Gemini’ as swear words is atrocious. Make it stop.

Deligtful

Lovely Eunice only needed a nudge from the right person to come out from her self-imposed shell. She was able to see what the right clothes would one up a new perspective. It didn't hurt that a handsome duke started circling around her, piquing the attention of all the young bucks who were easily led to the latest excitement. I loved the parrot's appearance as a gift. Thank you, Claudia Stone, another lovely story.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. This tale is a lot fun. A chance meeting brings Lady Eunice and Duke of Belmont together and deal is made between them. Lady Eunice will not mention the Duke's snooping and the Duke will help Eunice gets the man she wants to marry. Misunderstanding and awkward moments create some touching, but usually humours moments. With well written characters and great narration, you'll keep listening to this very enjoyable tale until the very end.

This was a lovely romance. The H/h were very lkeable, the story was fun and the hea well deserved. Eunice is a smart carrying young lady who donated her time to charity and is nice to others even those who may not deserve it. Aubyn is the strong standup guy every woman wants in her life.

I have not read or listened to the first 2 books in this series nor did I feel I needed to. However, I enjoyed the book so much I want to go back and read/listen to them now.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet clean historical romance.

Wow now that is how a dual narration should be done! They both did a wonderful job and kept the story alive! I will be listening to more by these two.

Renowned wallflower Lady Eunice had just decided she was quite content to live out her days as a spinster when her childhood love, Theodore, makes a sudden reappearance. Seeking to attract the young buck's attentions, Eunice enlists the help of the formidable Duke of Belmont in making her appear desirable. Never mind that she had to bribe the man into agreeing to her proposal, nor the fact that she cannot stand his haughty ways, as long as he helps her win Theodore's heart, she decides she can stomach pretending to be his betrothed for as long as is needed.

As the weeks pass and Eunice grows ever closer to snaring the charming but irresponsible Theodore, Aubyn realises that he is actually in love with his faux fiancée.

Can Aubyn convince Eunice that he is the man she should marry? Read this wonderful, clean Regency Romance to find out!

Book three of the Fairfax Twins series a well written story. What a Mother Eunice had she was vain, belittled people, she had nothing nice to say about people and disliked Eunice from the day she was born. Which gave Eunice a complex of not knowing if she could trust what others said. She wants to catch the eye of a childhood friend and asks Aubyn Euripides Charles Cantwell, Sixth Duke of Belmont to help her. But she does not realize what Theodore is really like. Aubyn and Eunice also do not realize they are falling in love. Who will Eunice choose, was the question I wanted answered. I enjoyed reading this book. I'm so excited to share my newest book with you, which on the surface is a very typical fake fiance Regency Read.
Appearances aren't everything however, as you'll find out in this tale! Lady Eunice has spent her life being bullied by her domineering mother, but despite this is still a kind hearted young lady. When her childhood love reappears on the scene, Eunice decides to try and capture his attention, with a little help from the Duke of Belmont.
As the mismatched pair spend more and more time together, it becomes clear that there is a spark between them. Will Eunice realise that the man before her is far worthier than the man she has dreamed about before it's too late?

Lady Eunice and Aubyn, the Duke of Belmont form a fake engagement to make the man she really wants to marry jealous and to keep the title hungry debutantes after the duke at bay. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings become involved. I felt for Eunice being told she wasn't pretty enough. I also connected to her because I love to read and wear glasses too. Aubyn didn't want to marry because he is afraid of being violent with his wife and children like his father was. He had to let go of these fears to find true happiness. There were plenty of funny moments in this romance.

Eunice has always thought that she was ugly because she was tall and stout and had a rather large nose. She was definitely not the beauty that her mother was. That was something that her mother never stopped criticizing her about. Her mother dressed her in clothes that would look great on her mother but tended to make her look fat and shallow. Aubyn is a Duke who had a very trying childhood with a father who was particularly cruel. Believing that he is just like his father he refuses to marry. These two make a pact to help each other through the season. They agree to a fake engagement. But then things get interesting.

Usual story line, writing and character development could have made it better

It was the usual story line of a wall flower that meets a duke and a fake engagement. Such stories are however elevated by interesting characters and if the chemistry and relationship developing between the two protagonists is done right. This book however gets nowhere close to that. The characters and those back stories are interesting enough but the issues that come from them are never resolved. The book end rather suddenly without resolving any issues. Disappointing.

Lady Eunice finally has her second chance at love with her Theodore, so she bribes the Duke of Belmont to help her. Wonderful characters and sweet romance in a Regency setting make this a wonderful story. Will Lady Eunice marry?

The Importance of Being Eunice

Great, great story. Eunice was infatuated with her childhood friend, Theo. She wanted him to notice her at the balls and different events. Aubyn was a Duke and Eunice made n agreement with him to pose as her fiancé’ so Theo might become interested. It gets complicated but a really great story. You will enjoy this

Fun but not accurate

The story was fun but there was so much modern day vernacular and ideas that it was jarring. It’s 2.9. But I liked the story. It just didn’t feel close to the time period.

Nice read

Again I enjoyed her last book. It was a sweet romance with a happy ending. Although Eunice should have seen through Theo a lot earlier. I would have liked the situation about the ex actress mistress to have been clearer and explain.

Rather quick read. Decent length. Not too long

Sweet and relatable characters who discover themselves more and more as the story progresses.
Interesting plotline (fake engagement).

Can only recommend. Nothing in there that put me off.

Sweet

Eunice isn't a great beauty, to her mother's dismay. She has four failed seasons. And then she attracts the attention of two men. She has to figure out which one she truly loved and is loved by in return. It's a sweet clean story.

Eunice is just the sweetest person and Aubyn was surprisingly as well. He obviously hid it under haughtiness and broodiness. Even better they were both so amusing, highly recommend this book.

Eunice doesn't seem to have anything to do with the Fairfax twins. However, the story is a jolly bit of froth and delight. Eunice has a maid who sees the dark side of everything. However, Eunice doesn't want to be the cause of the poor girl's unemployment, so she trudges on with this dour-hired hand. This makes for a comedic balance between upbeat Eunice and downbeat Sarah.

When Lady Eunice catches the Duke of Belmont in an awkward situation, he asks how he might bribe her to maintain her silence. She wants to learn how to be desirable. As the Duke of Belmont is a quasi-spy, his actions must remain unquestioned. So he agrees to help the bespeckled Lady Eunice to seem more desirable by creating a faux engagement between them. This is all lighthearted fun until Eunice's mother does the oddest thing.

When Lady Cassius finds her daughter ready to abandon her engagement to a duke to marry a third son, Lady Cassius agrees wholeheartedly. That seemed strange for a woman who was previously social climbing for a duke for her daughter.

Eunice and Belmont are so achingly sweet together and I loved every minute of their love story. This is the funniest story in this series, with laugh out loud moments and excellent one liners from the morbid lady’s maid, Sarah. I wish the author would do a series for the lady’s maids in these books because they are awesome. Loved this one and though it was short, it was just right to tell their story.

I really liked how this book started and had high hopes for it, until the first meeting of the two main characters, innuendo was unleashed like a wild animal. In fact, romance was absent from this story, until the very last scene, that was the only romantic scene in the whole book, which was described by the author as “wasn’t the most romantic of scenes”. I won’t be reading any more of this author’s books, the writing style is not good.

I am really liking this author. Her romances are clean, which is not my preference, but the characters are likable and the writing quite engaging - I love the backstory that her books open with. This had a somewhat frumpy heroine with a dash of insecurity and a faux betrothal - right up my alley. It had some nice dashes of angst but isn’t very dramatic, just sweet. (3.5 stars)
