Career Courage is a holistic approach to finding and/or rediscovering your individual passion and vocation. Based on the experiences of a burned-out psychotherapist, the author takes you through a series of discovery activities that focuses on understanding yourself at a deeper level so that you can fully understand what it is you want out of a career, and life. Easy to follow advice and activities guide you through the discovery process.

Through introspective activities that examine values, self-perception, emotions, motivation, and relationships, a clearer picture of “who you are” is discovered. Along with personal examination, professional roles of risk taking, networking, vision, decision making, and influence, your professional identity is explored and developed.

Good pathway and guidance for those seeking career change or for those that are recent graduates and not sure what to do with their degrees.

When I requested this book to review from NetGalley I thought it was about getting out of a job rut and taking a chance on a new job or line of work. It is much more than that. The book is about identifying what type of career will be satisfying, investigating it, developing skills for success, keeping your head up, learning, and the fact that success doesn't mean the end. I wasn't expecting to get much out of it, and quickly realized that following the steps in the book would challenge me a great deal.

One of the aspects of the book that I appreciated the most was the recognition that career success and happiness is dependent (in the long term at least) on soft skills. While the author doesn't cal them that, she discusses emotional intelligence, networking, communication, and self-knowledge, amongst other important skills to strengthen and maintain.

The reason I didn't give the book 5 stars has more to do with the nature of this type of book than any fault of the author. There are a number of exercises for the reader to complete, but interpreting them and pushing oneself to make changes based on what is identified needs either a very self-aware person or external guidance.

I recommend this book for anyone who has ever considered doing something else, is feeling stagnant or unappreciated, or is unhappy in their work.

This book offers some quite useful insights concerning the possibility of the career change,. It covers a wide area of aspects including the financial/money-concerning ones.
This is a coaching-style book written with somehow holistic approach, which might be or might not be your style.
Does it work for me? Partly. The authoress has a background in psychotherapy and it shows (in both plus and minus side - taken from my personal point). Plus side - the authoress is able to ask some very good questions and shine light on some matters that are on stake for me. I have been reviewing (and even readjusting) my attitudes during the reading and I have been able to explore and find out some issues I need to work on. I am thankful for that insight.
Minus side - the therapeutic style/guidance of asking your reader the questions and lettiing him to find their own conclusions might not work for everybody, as it lacks a bit in offering the practical advice, concrete steps and solutions.

Having said all of that - I can recommend this book, but not as a sole source to read while considering change (be it career or other change) - it would work better as a part of the bunch of sources. Pick various titles and take wisdom from more resources that just one book. And definitely read one aimed to provide "hard", practical solutions - and the combine the sources to what works best for you.

This book has left me a more confident, positive, and self-aware human being. I am currently between careers and picked this up looking for a few pro-tips. I felt engaged by almost every chapter and I'd recommend those to anyone reading it to follow through with the exercises.

One thing I'll knock Kelley for is an unintended emphasis on case studies involving upper and middle class workers who move from high paying careers to lower paying or volunteer positions that align with their personal passions. Fortunately though, this book isn't about finding yourself or following your dreams. It's about deeply reflecting on your actions, beliefs, and thoughts involving work which is something everyone can greatly benefit from.

The cover, with its eye-catching Olympic pictogram characters, is a little misleading in that much of the text is devoted to deeply understanding and relating to the people you work with. I'd adjust it slightly by having the main figure politely part ways with the others and wish them all the best. Smiles all around of course.

An interesting book that seeks to act as a personal coach to help you decide what you really want to do as a career and maybe help kick your backside into a totally new area. Self-help, personal coach and career guide all thrown into one

The style did not entirely work for this reviewer; this could be due to cultural differences, age or just a clash of style. However, it can quite possibly work for another reader. Some people are generally more in-tune with self-help books than others. In any case it was hardly a troubling read and gave some interesting thoughts and perspectives, even if it did not particular embrace this reviewer and feel as if a bulls-eye connection has been made.

The author notes that she has injected some fun into the book and its advice. Maybe that is where the problem stems from as humour can be a Marmite-type thing – something you either love or not. Humour can certainly have its place, especially in a book of this kind, yet perhaps you have to be careful not to subconsciously over trivialise or tune-out the reader.

Whatever it was with this book, this reviewer was more tuned out than tuned in. Fortunately, the book is reasonably priced, so it can still provide some utility and benefit even if you cherry pick parts of the book. You probably won’t feel ripped off should you buy it blind, yet if you have the opportunity to check it in a bookstore first that may be a wise recommendation.

CAREER COURAGE addresses that for one reason or another some people lost their north at some point in their lives and end far from their true calling; furthermore, a crisis or as simple as a sense of dissatisfaction points out that’s time to face whatever it is that makes them unhappy.

Based on her experience and practice as career coach, Katie Kelley presents a program to encourage any reader to answer ten questions that revolve around “motivation, confidence, risk, character, harmony, vision, community, influence, fortune, and life’s pivotal moments.” Moreover, CAREER COURAGE incentives to answer these questions to face discomfort as success not necessarily means happiness.

Three types of exercises to apply this knowledge: Asking the tough questions, taking stock, and wrapping up.

This book would be useful to people that experience unease even though they have achieved success. Even more useful for teenagers so they avoid the suffering to be far from their soul purpose as adults.
