When I saw that Tom Sotis was releasing a book, I couldn’t wait to read it. I’ve been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to meet and attend a couple of Mr. Sotis’s seminars. I hope I will attend many many more. I find his teaching and methodology to be second to none. The wealth of knowledge is staggering and he has always seemed so eager to teach what he knows, even to students, like myself, who are low on the food chain, pretty ignorant on the subject, and are just starting to learn. Aside from the amazing curriculum and knowledge base, the thing that stuck out to me was that he is genuine. He’s not trying to play some game, put up a facade, sell you anything, etc. He doesn’t hold back and actually wants you to ask questions and make sure you understand it. The level of consistency in his messaging and delivery reinforces everything you learn. So the chance to have a textual companion to his teaching was a no-brainer.
That being said, just because someone has the knowledge of the martial art (or whatever topic) it doesn’t mean they can convey that throughout a book. Not surprisingly, Mr. Sotis demonstrates immediately that that genuineness and consistency translates into an excellent read. To begin with, the structure of the book flows and sets up each successive topic. Laying the foundation of real life experience and real life lessons, we see that everything comes from a first hand reality. He’s not spitting out platitudes and filling up next year’s motivational quote calendar. There’s a tangible feeling in what he says. As such, moving to next parts of the book you know that the information is coming from someone who has actually implemented it. What I also loved was that he went into clearing up any ambiguity in semantics. For example, What is strategy vs. tactics? Too often miscommunication comes because people are using the same words but define them differently. You get a clear understanding of what it is you’re being told so we’re all on the same page (no pun intended). This also allows for these lessons to be translated outside of “just” martial arts. You can apply them to any field you in which you want to succeed.
However, this does not mean that Mr. Sotis comes across as some know-it-all. He welcomes you questioning the information. He is open to discussion. This ensures confidence and understanding on the part of the everyone. It’s hard to be confident in something you don’t quite get.
So it might sound more like I’m describing an interaction with Mr. Sotis rather than reviewing a book, which is because there’s little difference. This book is an extension of what it’s like to listen to him speak. Again, I think this is due to the genuineness and consistency in his message and teaching. I feel this book is a wonderful foundation if you are venturing into martial arts and especially if you train with Mr. Sotis. You could read this book, show up to your first seminar, and relax as you start to hear that consistency and see him practice what he preaches.
As I said, I am blessed to have been able to work with him the few times I have and hope to continue my education. I am bringing this book back to where I train and hope the rest of my colleagues get as much out of it as did.

This, in my opinion, is a must read for anyone interested in any or all of the following topics: psychology, sociology, aggression, martial arts, combatives, philosophy, strategy, training, personal development, and blade-based fighting.
That probably covers everyone on the planet. Seriously, this is not only an interesting in depth biography of one of the most renowned knife-fighters and trainers on the planet, but also a concise thorough and powerful breakdown of all the elements necessary for true invincibility. The quality and depth of the analysis and structure is profound and unique. This is not only Tom Sotis’ life-work, but also a great work of art.

Full Disclosure:
Tom Sotis is one of the most brilliant and analytical minds I have had the honor and pleasure to ever come across and receive instruction from. Not only does he possess a scientific mindset that can easily match itself with the top minds in academia, he is an inspiring teacher that is able to convey the most difficult concepts, and on top of that he can perform what he preaches! How many inside and outside the self-defense/martial-arts/combative-arts world do you know who are able to do just that? Preciously few....
I highly recommend you explore what he has to offer, be it for personal development, business development or self-defense...
I have integrated the AMOK! framework into all aspects of my life and I’m a better, more functional, more balanced and happier person for it...
