Holy Guacamole: A Glorious Discovery of Your Undeniable Worth

Rate this book
Have you ever felt on the edge, alone, down and out,
or maybe wondered what in the world God can do with someone like you?

Sometimes you wake up feeling less than great about your life. Or your relationships. Or your job. Or your whatever.

Sometimes you even feel pushed to the side, put on the shelf, overlooked, and not particularly important to, well, anything.

Sometimes, you feel even less important. . .than a side of rice and beans. (You know, kind of like that stuff served on the side that no one really asked for?)

What if you found out you were something more like tableside guacamole—that fancy kind they wheel up to the table and make right on the spot?

What if you were made on purpose,
for a purpose that can release God’s glorious colors and flavors in the world?

You didn’t arrive here by accident, nor have you been served up as an unwanted side dish. The God of creation has created you, and He isn't waiting for you to become some better version of yourself so He can finally love you. . .or use you. . .or delight in you.

Generously seasoned with humor and empathy, with stories of triumph, failure, heartbreak, and redemption, Holy Guacamole will connect your heart to the unchanging truths of God’s Word and the unfailing power of God’s call to live a life full of His love for you and for the world.

God longs to reveal to you all the ways you are His beautiful, flavorful, colorful creation. Let Him show you all the ways you are Holy Guacamole—His masterpiece, His signature offering to a world in need of His love.

A fun and honest book that will draw you in, make you laugh, and encourage you to be the woman God has always dreamed for you to be. You aren't the rice and beans, you are the table-side guac! Carrie speaks from her own life experience of being a wife, mother, reluctant Pastor's wife, and woman. Full of humor, and an easy read.

When the beginning of a Christian book begins with the introductory title: "Hello, My Name Is Carrie and I'm a Secret Donut Hoarder' you know you're in for a unique reading experience!

Holy Guacamole did not disappoint. The author, Carrie Stephens, did such a great job of balancing and sharing theology and real life experiences through humor, wit, and humility. Carrie put in just the right amount of scripture at the right places. From womanhood to motherhood to leadership and more, I enjoyed reading Carrie's personal life experiences and was constantly reminded of the goodness of God's love.

The book was easy to read as it felt like I was listening to a close friend share over a cup of coffee. I often found myself smiling, laughing, nodding in agreement, and/or even sometimes wanting to share back. One quote that really stood out to me at the beginning and one I still think about is: “Waiting for God to show up proves how powerless we are. And yet faith requires we sit in the story of how we are not enough without Him and remain expectant of His goodness." From great notable quotes to funny footnotes, this book will relate to everyone in some way.

If you want to know God better or go deeper with God - there is a section at the end of the book on how to think, feel, and act broken down chapter by chapter. I love that Carrie put this in as it challenges me to go on a deeper level with God. I just wish it was at the end of each chapter instead of at the every end of the book as I like to process and act on things in the moment. Do yourself a favor and take a sneak peak of these as you finish each chapter.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a little encouragement in life's challenges and a new way to look at faith.

Witty....engaging....relevant. Each chapter of the book deconstructs the fragile walls I build in my life in vain attempts to find meaning, value, and worth. While some books come in like a wrecking ball making the task of deconstruction seem a heavy burden, the author of Holy Guacamole does an incredible job of doing this through laugh out loud humor and words that bring hope and encouragement. I think the best analogy I could give would be that reading this book is like drinking a strong cup of coffee, with just the right amount of ….insert most amazing coffee creamer.... It's the perfect blend....

An additional aspect of the book that is extremely valuable are the digging deeper questions the author provides at the end of each chapter. Instead of reading through a chapter just to splash water on my face, it allowed me to go back and cultivate meaningful change in how I think and perceive both myself and the world around me. It provided opportunities for Christ to do a deep work in my heart that results in lasting change.

Wow you guys! This book is so relatable and SO funny! Carrie does an amazing job speaking our worth and purpose to us and gently , with such humor addresses all the various ways we try to save ourselves...which we obviously can’t do, but oh, we try! And there are these hidden gems scattered throughout the book in the form of HILARIOUS footnotes. It’s like finding comedic treasure when you spot one.

“Our small attempts to hold ourselves together and save ourselves from all the broken parts of our souls will never quench our deepest thirst for the God who has a plan to repair this broken world-which is a good thing, since God longs to quench our thirst and invite us to join Him in the work....
Jesus didn’t come to make us good enough. He came to tell us we could stop trying so hard and that we could rest in His goodness. There’s not a tube of eye cream or a roll of tape in the whole universe that can come close to offering what Jesus offers us.”

The author brings many personal illustrations to emphasize how each of us go through times feeling like we are unimportant, worthless, and generally down on ourselves – much less than what God made us to be.

She compares those down feelings with feeling less important “than a side of rice and beans”, which everyone tends to get in a Mexican restaurant and many don’t eat. She wants us to emphasize and dwell on the fact that God has made us like the wonderful “tableside” guacamole we like to “splurge” on as the best part of the meal.

The beautiful emphasis of this book remains that God wants us to believe and live as His important masterpiece – a beautiful creation.

I found she used many word and phrase references pertaining to the “millennial” style of language, which tended to “turn me off” as an older reader.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

Sometimes you get a book and it's okay, nothing special, just okay, BUT this book, Holy Guacamole by Carrie Stephens is more than okay. I could relate to many of her stories and I know you will be able to as well. Grab a copy today, get some coffee, a highlighter (you will find several lines you want to go back to) and start reading.

One of my favorite quotes - “God isn’t looking for perfect people with massive influence who are confident and secure in every way. He’s just looking for thirsty hearts that don’t want to cover up their need any longer; He’s looking for people who are ready to let Him fill their cup with His holiness. "

Such a good reminder that God created me for a purpose & He wants to use me as I am - He isn’t waiting for me to become a better version of myself. Carrie Stephens‘s writing is engaging, & it’s easy to get drawn in to this book. I found myself laughing, crying, and nodding in agreement as I read her personal stories. This is a great book for a woman who might feel a little overlooked, overburdened or is just in need of a reminder that she is valuable. I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher.

One of the greatest rewards you’ll experience reading this book is receiving the "permission to have weaknesses". As we strive so hard in this life and miss the mark so many times (or think that we do), you’ll find a friend in the author, who with great transparency and humor, will walk alongside you and bring great comfort in the fact that you’re not alone in this faith journey. It’s like sitting down over a great coffee for a long talk with a best friend. A beautiful quote summing up every chapter of this wonderful book: “Somehow we must reconcile the way our spiritual development requires we practice and develop the talents God has given us with the way grace allows us space to fail and be rescued by God.”

Serious (topic). Funny (presentation). Real (sharing). I love the conversational tone the author uses to communicate the love of God for me. Not stuffy and formal. Just truths and experiences spoken “for reals”. So I walked away reminded:
•Having a relationship with Jesus is much simpler than I make it.
•I don’t need to give into the pressure of feeling like I’ve fallen short …every time. When I do, Jesus covers it.
•Life (and myself!) shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Just Jesus.

I have struggled with identity and worth for a long time. Reading this book has given me a whole new perspective on my spiritual identity crisis! The author shares many anecdotes and thoughts from her own life that I found to be not just funny but relatable! Framing it all in a Biblical point of view made this a fun and uplifting read! I enjoyed exploring the scriptures referenced in a new way as much as I did reading about the author's experiences!

I definitely am putting this book on my list for gifting to friends in the future!

Holy Guacamole
By: Carrie Stephens

*REVIEW* ☆☆☆☆
Holy Guacamole is wholly original and compelling. This book asks the hard questions-who are you, who did you used to be, how did you end up here, and where do you really want to go now? We all know there are no easy answers. Life is not perfect, and it never will be.

"Despite what social media's curated posts and "inspirational" memes may declare, more hustle and better hype can't bring peace in the midst of the storms of life, cure the sickness of our societies, or teach us to love one another..."

If you are reading this, odds are you are a bookstagrammer. I'll bet you want more followers, recognition, cool arcs, 3,000 comments, etc. because don't we all? If your life-the real one-is in shambles, will Instagram save you? I think we all try way too hard to appear perfect, but we all know that it's an illusion. My point is that none of us have the ability to save ourselves or undo anything from the past or change what we feel.

So, what can you do? This book is divided into chapters, detailing the ways in which you can't save yourself and what to do instead:
▪Enoughness
▪Quitting
▪The Information Highway
▪Perfectionism
▪Cynicism
▪Consumerism
▪Doubting
▪Success
▪Keeping Score
▪Fame
And, finally, explaining how you are already saved and how you can make the world a better place.

"...engage your whole life in pursuing God and people with as much as you can offer them. You were made for this purpose, to love and be loved in a world that is starving for more of everything God has already provided for us all."

Holy Guacamole genuinely surprised me. I was expecting a fairly typical self help book, but that is not what I got. This book is entertaining, relatable, honest, conversational and filled with amazing insightful knowledge. This little book packs a big punch! I recommend for any person seeking answers in a way that is not preachy or heavy handed. Carrie Stephens has done an excellent job, and I'm excited to read more!

This book Holy Guacamole by Carrie Stephens is one of the best books I have read. In one of the chapters the Author uses these words...”In silence, we hear. In weakness, we find God’s Strength. In generosity, we receive His blessings. In service to others, He meets our needs. In death, God lavishes us with eternal life.” WOW these words really touched my heart and soul. Holy Guacamole is filled with wisdom, encouragement, and done in a humorous way that sure to reach into your heart and soul.

I was certain that I was going to like this book when the introduction said "Hello, my name is Carrie and I'm a secret donut hoarder" and I was right! As I continued to read this new book by Carrie Stephens, I couldn't dismiss the fact that even though she was talking about her own life, she was describing what I've often experienced and sharing feelings that I have sometimes hidden. She was also Making Me Laugh Out Loud! Holy Guacamole is filled with accounts of household disasters and personal blunders but it is also full of encouragement, assurance, and the Word of God. Yes, Stephens uses an abundance of Bible scripture as she recounts her failures and victories but she repeatedly shows us that none of us are losers when we claim Jesus Christ as our Savior. We can all claim undeniable worth!

I especially like that Holy Guacamole has a section at the end that helps us sum up what we've just read. "How to Think, Feel, and Act---Chapter by Chapter" is a short guide for each of the twelve chapters and there are suggestions to help us think, feel, and act. I found this very useful personally but I also think that it would be very helpful for the leader of a book club or women's Bible study.

This is a book to read and enjoy, and then, a book to read again and savor for its undeniable biblical insight. Holy Guacamole will inspire you, encourage you, and help you discover just how special you are---His masterpiece!

Warrior Women-Made for More

Holy Guacamole by Carrie Stephens is the perfect book to pick up if you feel like you’re not enough, or maybe you are always the “odd man (woman) out” in your group of friends, or feel less than worthy for anything in life. Carrie wittingly reminds us that we are NOT chips and salsa; that we ARE the table-side GUACAMOLE and that we MATTER!

Carrie writes beautifully through her sense of humor and reminds her readers that we are meant for more than being forgotten. She gives relatable stories from her own life and nuggets of gold from the Word to remind us that we were created for a purpose and that we are warriors in Christ.

One of my many favorites from the book, “A Holy Guacamole life means trusting that God’s own perfect plan is always leading us to the best party ever, whether or not we know the way through ourselves.”

Grab your highlighter (or pen), cup of coffee (or tea), and curl up for an entertaining, soul touching, heart mending read!! We are made for more!!

Thank you to Barbour Publishing for the free review copy. All opinions are my own.

In this book, Stephens quickly points out that we are God's Holy Guacamole. With humor, wit, and honesty, Stephens takes the readers through what it means to be this Holy Guacamole. She shares a lot about her life and has lots of footnotes through out, which add to the humor of this book. She is also quick to challenge her readers to look to what God's word says about different topics and challenges their thinking that may not be correct. She also tackles modern day issues in light of what the gospel says. I really liked how she didn't shy away from using honesty to make her points. She showed vulnerability with some of her stories, which made me even more invested in her writing. I think this book is a fantastic addition to the Christian living reading world, and I hope other readers find joy and challenges among the pages.

I love how Carrie Stephens educates how to be a loving human through God's intent, told in everyday stories. Very relatable and done in a compassionate way.

The Bible confuses me and people I've known who live by its words religiously (bad pun), have never been successful at helping me understand what its purpose and goal is...to love me for who I am, while guiding me to love others for the same reasons.

Carrie's writing is like a delightful coffee chat with a really good friend, and I'm here for it!

Stephens is a new writer to me, and I am so thankful I had a chance to read her work! At one point hilarious, another humbling, "Holy Guacamole" took me on a journey where I learned more about myself than I expected.

Stephens is a pastor's wife, author and speaker. This book has funny, heartfelt, honest examples from Stephen's life that connect to Scriptural truths. How often do we see ourselves as less than? Are we truly living as God's chosen and dearly loved? The author walks alongside the reader, guiding and encouraging us to take a look at ourselves through God's eyes. We are worth the upcharge--just like that amazing guacamole! She calls us each to reevaluate Whose we are and to read our Word to reflect our value, not taking the first label that gets assigned to us. Finding our purpose and God given calling to create change in our world means we can't be content with accepting things that are not true about ourselves.

Yes, we may be different, but we are chosen. God will use every single part of who we are to impact the circle He has placed us in. We just have to be open to seeing the value we provide as a beloved child of God. He sees you as beautiful! I loved the uplifting message of this book, which was lovingly mixed together like a well worn recipe, filled with humor, candor, encouragement and empathy.

This book would be an amazing small group Bible study. I think women of all ages can relate to the themes of "Holy Guacamole." Let's stop letting limits dictate our success--we serve the God who makes anything possible!

I was an early reader, thanks to the author and Barbour Publishing. All opinions are my own.
