When the EMP strikes, how far will you go to protect the ones you love?
A month has passed since a devastating EMP ravaged the nation's power supplies. Jack and his family are surviving on a sustainable farm in the middle of the countryside.
Reunited with people he never thought he'd see again, Jack is determined to do all he can not to lose them once more. Logan and Emma are seeking shelter of their own.
When they discover an idyllic farm in a perfect location, Logan is determined to make it their home--at any cost. But when a tense standoff spirals into tragedy, the two groups are locked into a ruthless conflict that threatens to tear them both apart.
Just how far will both Jack and Logan go to protect those closest to them?
Ryan Casey is the author of over a dozen novels and a highly successful serial. He writes gritty post-apocalyptic fiction, throwing normal people into devastating situations and exploring how they react and adapt. He has also written several detective mysteries and thrillers. Across all genres, Casey's work is renowned for its rapid pacing, unforgettably complex characters, and knockout twists.
Casey lives in the United Kingdom. He has a BA degree in English with Creative Writing from the University of Birmingham, and has been writing stories for as long as he can remember. In his spare time, he can be spotted walking his West Highland White Terrier, has a passion for cinema and television, and probably spends a little bit too much time in the pub.
The first two books in the series were good because the action moved on and there was development. There isn't much here. Disappointed he has turned an excellent series into one overly long melodrama here with the third.
Hope Casey finds his way again as he is capable of a good plot and excellent characterisation; sadly, this third instalment doesn't make it.
I got this from the e library because I do like post apocalyptic fiction. The only reason this wasn’t a DNF is because I didn’t have another audiobook to distract me on the stationary bike. The storyline had possibilities, but it was written like a dystopian Hallmark movie.
Was there no other way for the writer to say "my people". Also I hated the ending, but I get the route the author went. That doesn't mean I like it though.
This book was so incredibly cheesy. The first two books had some promise, but this book really just ruined things. The ending was especially disappointing, and it was like an episode of a kid’s show where everyone says they are sorry for being mean and they won’t do it again (except they just keep doing it). It went on for like 100 pages, with Emma telling Logan that he could be a better person, but he is mad. And then Wayne telling Jack that he should be a better person, but he is mad too. But of course everyone has a speech about forgiveness right before they die and I just really didn’t like that.
I absolutely could not stand Jack’s character. All he did was obsess over that farm and feel guilty. And the fact that his character repeatedly expressed the guilt and the want to do better, he just kept being kind of awful. Then all of a sudden he gets shot and he decides he is all about forgiveness and sticking together? I really dislike how little continuity there was in the couple of characters that actually were given any attention in this book.
I don’t like to leave a series unfinished, but I also don’t want to be disappointed again.

4.1- Stars- Wow! The opening scene was intense, with Jack taking a life just because one mane was trying to secure food for eight people. It really makes you reflect. I understand the promise you made to Stan, but at some point, you have to learn to trust others. Logan come on…One of the victims was a father with coloring books and a locket. It’s clear that Logan is right to be cautious, but he also needs to find a way to trust a group instead of resorting to violence against everyone he encounters. What is Wayne thinking…?? The standoff was incredibly tense. I can’t believe Logan shot Wayne, and now he’s gone. That hit hard. I wanted to support Logan, but after everything that happened, I just couldn’t. I really hope Jack can come to understand the importance of trusting others, but with some limits. This was a tough book. Two deaths—one I anticipated, the other was a shock but felt possible. It was heartbreaking. Still, it was an excellent read, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series!

It is now one month after the EMP blast and the two groups have collided. The question is will it be for the good or the bad? Wow. Some of our characters have taken a departure from their previous personalities. It was interesting to see how society begins to crumble so quickly. One of the things that I was finding it hard to understand and believe is why so many people are gone. Why are entire towns abandoned? Also if you are out in the country, or anywhere for that matter, and you know the power isn’t coming back on don’t you think this would be the time start planting crops. Any crops. As long as it is food you can eat in the winter? But most of the people are too busy killing each other and stealing from each other to think that far into the future. Weird!
These books continue to be a bit of a drag for me. While there is a clear theme of trust and compassion, I just cannot get past the random acts of violence constantly thrown in the book.
I’m seriously reading my way through the entire post-apocalyptic genre, so when I say this book was SO BAD I gave up on it less than halfway through after pushing my way through the first two (also badly written) books in the series? Yeah, it’s THAT BAD. None of the characters have depth beyond a single mantra each, and if those repetitive mantras - to the point where I’m yelling a character’s mantra every 30 seconds as it is repeated YET AGAIN - were edited out, this book would be about 1/3 of the length. None of the characters were in any way likeable (see above, singular mantras) but also because of their huge resemblance to tropish 2-D Sims of Actual People.
I think burning books is absolutely a horror, but let me be the first to say that if I needed tinder to start a cooking fire in a post-apocalyptic world, I would gladly tear this book up to use as firestarting material. Yes. It is *that* poorly written.
I am confused as to why the admitted killer, Logan, who had done his time in prison and had protected a number of people along the way was given such short shrift compared to the man, Jack, of another group who had deliberately shot a girl and kept betraying the first group, even unto a murderous ambush. He kidnapped girls to manipulate the first group and would have killed them to make things easier. The first man was never really given a chance after their encounter with the second, much more unstable man. I had read all this series in order but know I would walk away from both groups after the multiple betrayals. I'm walking away from this series.
If you can leave a series unfinished I recommend you only read the first two books. Book 3 ruins everything.

I was skeptical of all the gratuitous violence. All the constant horrific things that kept happening. It was too much. More than could be believable. But book 2 ends on a reasonable enough high note considering what happenned next...
Then book 3 happenned. I'll be direct. Sorry. Jack and Logan end up in a war over the death of one of Logan's people. We find out that Logan has been lying to himself about the circumstances of his imprisonment. The false narrative really pissed me off! As the reader you are convinced that Logan is on a Redemption Journey or at the very least was wrongfully imprisoned. Wrong! He killed them, he murdered the wife and the daughter in front of the husband before he killed him. And then he just decided to convince himself that he didn't do it. I really don't like that the author manipulated his readers this way. Jack utilizes some really bad guys to try and get Logan killed simply because Logan refuses to give up his revenge. And then Jack and his family lose the farm. Logan shoots Wayne and then Wayne dies. Logan gets shot in the chest and still can't let s*** go. So of course, Logan decides to shoot Jack in the chest. Emma Frisch's Logan to the ground and Jack ends up stabbing Logan in the throat. Logan dies. The bad guys took over the farm are convinced to help keep Jack alive. The book ends with Jack and his ex-wife and the girls walking off for greener pastures. This book was awful. I gave it three stars because I actually liked book 1 and 2. It doesn't help that Logan and Wayne were my favorite characters. Just saying

Well, I liked how the author treated his characters and I was impressed with the ending of this book on a humane level. But it was very disturbing and just unnecessary. I expected more suspense and action and a different battlefield. Instead of watching patriarchal structures costing unnecessary life’s and destruction and the women being the emotional useless counterpart trying to glue the cracks and smooth over life. In a nutshell. I didn’t like the concept of accompanying characters to have them end up being pitched against each other. This series is finished for me.
I am not interested in reading further. The prediction one could make on what plot thread the next book focuses on is very far fetched and doesn’t spark any interest in me.
Oh dear! This ceased to be about surviving an EMP with all of the challenges that would be faced in that scenario and about a duel between two violent men with shriveled souls. Jack and Logan (whose redemption arc seems to have been a red herring) are very unlikable and a danger to everyone. This book goes down a very dark and very depressing rabbit hole and does not emerge. The astonishing attempt to end with a start-again-fresh-chances did not work after the wretched events that preceded it. The very end seemed to imply another book, but not for me.
So I liked the first two books in this series really liked most of the characters. We had Logan and Jack trying for redemption. I really thought this last book would be a coming together of the two groups, maybe some of that redemption, boy was I wrong. Both characters just become totally unlikeable. They path that the books were on just fell by the wayside. It makes me wish I had stopped at book two. Don’t waste your time.
I really enjoyed this whole series and can't wait for the next book. Well written and well developed characters. I recommend I to anyone who enjoys PA books.
It was too sad. Half the characters that were good turn bad and kill some of the others. The author tried to make it seem hopeful at the end but it was just depressing. This last book was depressing and violent from beginning to end.
This storyline is intriguing with its flawed characters. Did I say flawed? hmmmm! not just flawed but very dislikable. Jack and Logan are a menace to people around them.
