Heart of Hope #2

An Irish Affair

Rate this book
I'd always found Irish men to be irresistible.
And Devin?
He’s the hottest one of them all.

I had my chance with him.
Heck, I even have a baby with him.
A four-year old boy.
My only secret.
I lost my V-card to Devin on St. Patrick’s night four years ago.
My biggest mistake was thinking that I could trust him.
Hot men like him are trouble.
Besides, he made it clear to me that he hates kids.
Hates.
Fast-forward to when he meets our little boy.
A meeting that I tried my hardest to avoid.
I might have expected them to get along but… best buddies?
Devin is supposed to hate kids, remember?
It’s only a matter of time until he finds out his birthday.
And when he does…
Oh boy!

A full-length second chance secret baby romance featuring a single mom who’ll do anything to protect her sweet little boy. The perfect HEA and absolutely no cliff-hanger! ‘An Irish Affair’ is a part of the Heart of Hope series but stands alone. Books do not have to be read in order.

Meh.
I wasn’t feeling this one. Despite him being this super talented, astute business man, he failed to wonder when the virgin he’d shagged on repeat five years ago had got a four year old child from. But I wasn’t feeling any chemistry either, he was kind of bland and wet, she behaved like a total beeatch to him, though he’d done nothing to deserve it. Complete story.

I adore "secret baby" stories, when done right, but this one missed the mark by a mile. Devin was a total sweetheart and he treated his little virginal heroine, very sweetly when they first got together. Unfortunately his mother treated her very badly, so she walked away from what they could have had, and later finds herself pregnant. I loved all of this story up to this point. Serena TRIED to contact Devin when she first found out she was pregnant, but his number had been changed and when she got a hold of his mother (who refused to give her his new number), she was forced to tell his mother about her pregnancy and the mother told her to forget it and even offered to pay her to get out of his life completely and never return. I totally get her reason for keeping her pregnancy and her baby a secret for the reason above, but once Devin re-entered the scene and made it clear he wanted her before and NOW, she still kept him in the dark. Serena was a total bitch to Devin (as well as keeping her secret) through most of the story-constantly flinging barbs at Devin intimating what an asshole she thinks he is even though he did nothing to deserve that title. Then she'd hop on his dick and then quickly run away and start treating him shitty all over again. I really could not see what kept bringing him back around to her again and again. The only thing these two were good at was having cringy AF sex, as well as awkward sex talk. I skimmed through the plethora of cringy sex scenes/talk, and skimming those scenes really made this story go quickly.

Serena kept Devin in the dark about his child for way too long. It was embarrassing that she let him interact with the boy, and never clued him in that this boy was HIS child too.

The entire drama could have been resolved quickly if Serena would have just told Devin what his mother said to her, but she didn't. She had a chance to redeem herself when he moved back again, but she opted to just keep having sex with him and keeping him in the dark-FOR WAY TOO LONG. I REALLY didn't like her at all.

Serena never did tell Devin he was the father of this cute little boy he'd been hanging out with for way too long. Her father let the cat out of the bag (at 70% mark of the story), because even he didn't realize his daughter was STILL being a bitch and keeping the news from Devin.

This story only turned up a tick when Devin's evil mother showed her claws as soon as he told her he knew about her interaction with Serena and the horrible way his mother treated Serena. This story severely needed that bit of drama. At the 80% mark Serena finally admits that she was totally punishing Devin the entire time of keeping him in the dark just because his mother was a bitch to her, so Serena felt justified in shitting all over him through the rest of this story because of his mother.

The rest of this story tied up a little too quickly and a little too easily to be realistic.

If you want to read good porn, there are much better books out there.
If you want a good plot, there's nothing here that isn't a cliché. I tried... Truly ....I tried to get through this book. But it just kept getting more and more disgusting.
Lets see... Serena has a guy's kid. She doesn't tell him because of mommy (cliché) This is not a small town 16yr old girl. She's a university student in NYC. She doesn't tell the guy 5 years later, thought she does fuck him as often as possible. She's in the wrong from day one. The guy is clueless, but she still keeps playing the victim. Disgusting woman.
The guy... Devin. His girlfriend who he wants to move to Europe doesn't show up at the last moment. But he doesn't contact her once to find out why. Then he comes back and plays the victim too. Disgusting.
The storyline is old and crap. Just forcing long sex scenes in the wrong timeframe really screws it up more. How about those same scenes after they are honest with each other or when they were young and experimental would have worked. But it just doesn't work for me when the hero or heroine are lying to each other's face. (Despite sleeping with him every chance she gets, still not telling him he has a son!!!)

I usually don't bother with reviews, but after reading a really good series, i ended up reading this. And was thoroughly ... You got it.... Disgusted!!!!

I was drawn to this freebie as it was a secret baby romance. The characters were likeable to begin with but their behaviour quickly became predictable and frustrating. Lots of sweet moments in between however and my curiousity was sparked sufficient to keep me reading.

While this book wasn’t my cup of tea, I could imagine other readers who enjoy sweet reads with a twist of misunderstandings thrown into the story would enjoy this book a lot more than me!

Great second chance romance between Devin and Serena. They met on St. Patrick’s Day and have a whirlwind romance. Thanks to some meddling family members, they lose 5 years and so much more. When they are able to finally meet again, things are a surprise for Devin. Will they finally get their HEA or will there be things or someone who will stand in the way of happiness? She is a new to me author and I can’t wait to read more of her work.

A second chance romance with a secret baby. It was good. Even though, I read books with secret babies and so on in it, this one was overfamiliar for me. Banal, if I could say. The hero was alright until he couldn’t stop being angry and hurt, and then feeling so great that he’s the only man in the heroine’s life, and the oh so pregnancy stuff he said.
But it was alright. I liked the heroine, how independent she was and how she stood her ground through everything.

AUTHOR Ajme Williams
This was the first book I've read from this author and I really liked it. I'm a sucker for a secret baby, and she told this story so well! Will read from her again.

NARRATORS

Tim Paige
I enjoy his stories. This week has been two of his by happenstance and I'm here for it. He enhanced the story with his animation, He finds a way to fit every character and its a talent.

Sofia Willingham
She did a very good job with this narration. She met all the expectations and her voice fit this character so well! I would listen to anything else this narrator puts out.

SOME SPICY CHAPTERS
Chapter 1 V Card
Chapter 7 Reunion
Chapter 8 Fun Fun
Chapter 29 Make up

THINGS I DIDN'T LOVE
I really don't love miscommunication, and felt like this happened quite often.

THINGS I LOVED
I thought that even though there was not very 'smut' in this the plot more than made up for it because I really Love Secret Baby Tropes!!

STEAM TO PLOT
The steam is good and on point, it flowed with plot. I didn't think there was a lot of steam, and I really enjoy my steam, but this was good.

Serena is finally legal and can partake in the festivities of St. Patrick's Day. Devin is bored with the "plastic" crowd and wants to spend time with people who have show real emotions. When he meets Serena her out going nature is infectious and he is immediately drawn to her. There St. Patrick's Day pub crawl turns into a week long fling ending with Devin inviting her to Europe but fate has other plans.

Wonderful characters both main and supporting. The story line was great. I loved this book.

Serena and Devin meet on St. Patrick’s Day and even though they are from different worlds, sparks fly, but Devin’s mother breaks them up. What will happen when the see each other again 5 years later? What secrets will be revealed? Fast-paced read with loads of drama, suspense and steamy chemistry. I liked it.

It was 3.5 stars for me. I liked the premise, but at times Serena annoyed me. And then Devin kept thinking, “I don’t know why I want her.” And I thought, “Me neither, dude...” and that’s never something you want to agree with.

An Irish Affair was the second book in the Heart of Hope Box set which included the first four books in the series. There was also an excerpt from the fifth book, Eight Long Years, which only whet my appetite for more. All the books had some steaminess to them but it added to the story. All were second chance romances but under different circumstances and set in different locations. My emotions were engaged throughout as I cried, laughed and even got angry at some of the character's actions and attitudes. The lack of communication along with the stress of jobs, careers, other pressures, family and friends played a part in all the stories. The books all had nice closure after many twists and turns along with their happily ever after. Ms. Williams is an author whose books I've enjoyed and I keep coming back for more. I enjoyed all the books and below is a brief review of each one.

An Irish Affair was probably my favorite story. I liked the characters of Serena, Devin and her son, Andrew. Throughout there were a lot of Irish words, foods, celebrations and especially Devin's family's business, the Roarke empire, along with Serena's job as an event planner. The story is set in New York City and the Hamptons and Serena and Devin have an instant attraction when they meet on St. Patrick's Day and she invites him to meet her and her friends on the pub crawl. From there things heat up until real life gets in the way, or does it? I liked the flow of the story but not his mother. When they reconnect five year's later will they pick up where they left off or will life and family once again get in the way? The epilogue that takes place five months after the story ended left me wanting more.

OVERALL: This is my first book by Ajme Williams and first narration by Sofia Willingham. I suppose if you like the "secret baby" and lots of unneeded drama/angst and dishonesty, then this book is for you.

STORYLINE: I’ve never read a “secret baby” book, but this one piqued my interest because 1) Tim Paige, who I like a great deal, and 2) I am a sucker for an Irish brogue. Well, let me spoil the second -- there’s no Irish brogue. That was the first disappointment, and honestly, it's where I probably should have just called it a day and shelved the book. The book is full of cliches and cringe-worthy moments.

CHARACTERS: I find it hard to like Serena. Even if we excuse the ghosting and secret baby, she’s given multiple opportunities to come clean after seeing him again…. and again… I just want to scream at her and shake her. Devin isn't entirely innocent either. He's slightly more likable, but he plays the victim just as often as Serena does. The mother is awful, obviously, but it feels like these main characters just can't get their s**t together and be honest with each other, despite frequently saying they are being honest with each other.

NARRATION: While this book is dual narration, I think it probably would have best served by duet narration. Sofia has a very sweet, soft, almost shy, voice. Most voices aren’t really all that different from her own voice, for the exception of her son. Tim is fantastic, as usual. His voice is easy and very compelling to listen to.

Second Chance at Love

Ajme Williams writes a story of second chances for Devin and Serena. They are a couple that met during a St Patrick’s day club crawl. They fell in love, but life had other plans in their future. Devin’s mother interrupted in their relationship, because she felt that Serena was not aristocratic enough for their wealthy family.
Devin returns from a trip to Europe, and runs into Serena again. His feelings for her have only grown more. She is also attracted to him, but her situation holds her back. They begin a hidden relationship, but something is causing Serena to hold back.
Devin’s family, especially his mother, keeps making life hard for Devin. He is destined to take over the family company, but is under a lot of stress. Meantime, Serena continues to run hot and cold with Devin.
Everything comes to a head, when Serena’s father accidentally spills the truth about Serena and her son. It turns out that when Devin and Serena first met, he had left her with a very special present. Devin is immediately angry and hurt about Serena’s secret. He gets to meet his son, and they get along very well.
When he takes Devin to meet his parents, Devin’s mother treats Andrew coldly. This does not hinder Devin’s love towards his son. Eventually Devin and Serena reunite, and form a family with their son, and the couple finally obtain their HEA.

Too bad his mother interfered with them; that caused the problem that made her leave. Even after they meet up again, he does not believe that his mother is like this evil woman, until one day he overhears her and finally cuts ties with her. Too bad he couldn’t believe her and treated her badly, but I feel he didn’t grovel enough for all the misunderstandings that happen.
Although a good read, just because I believe he should grovel more doesn't mean it is not a great story.

I got this for free a long time ago (not sure why I downloaded it) and planned to just read the first few chapters to see what it was like. I assumed it would be a DNF because I really don't like the premise of "rich boy takes her v-card." But I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, that was part of the story, but the bigger part of the story was how smitten Devin was with her and how relentless in trying to figure out a way for them to be together - and not in a creepy, controlling, stalkerish way. No matter the obstacle, he just kept coming back to the fact that he loved her.

Serena made decisions that were completely understandable, but had significant consequences for all of them. Devin came to understand her reasons but also showed her that her worst fears mostly did not come true, and those that did, he was able to deal with.

Glad I gave this book a chance. And this is why I do try free books from new authors, even though I'm skeptical. Because there are hidden gems out there!

Irish on both sides. Socio-economically as different as night and day. Devon Roarke is the wonderkid in the Roarke empire. His father developed Parkinson and back away from his CEO office and Devon was now in that position.

On St Patrick's Day he, his BFF for life with their dates were eating lunch out when he saw their watress and he fell for her immediately. Their conversation became "What are you doing tonight. He decided to go with her and her friends on something he had never done, a Pub Crawl.

They had a week together and he was sent to Europe to deal with their properties, and, according to his parents grow up. He wanted Serena Moore, also Irish on both sides, to go with him. Her parents talked her out of it.

Five years later they meet again. She is working as a party planner who is helping plan a party at the Roarke, the flagship restaurant of Devon's family empire. They started off where they ended except for one thing. ANd that is keeping them apart.

I wanted to love this book, I really did, but it ended up just being okay-ish. My issue with the book was that Devin was a smart man…did he really not stop and think “wait a minute” and start doing math in his head when he first met Andrew because come on. And the repetitiveness along with much needed editing made this a 3 star book for me.

The book started off great, I was into it and couldn’t wait for that moment when Devin realizes he’s a father. I hated how he eventually found out. It really made me dislike Serena. I felt the ending was a little rushed. I loved the scenes with Devin and Andrew. I mean, swoon when he steps up to fatherhood. I liked the character growth of Devin’s father…his mother, not so much. I would never allow my child to be left in the same house as that woman.

This was my first time reading this author and I would give them another go.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book
Oh my word. Firstly , get the tissues out, you will need them, well I know I did.
A truly brilliant story of Devin and Serena, oh my where do I start. Two people who just hit it off but sometimes it’s like fate or people dictated other plans for them. So many secrets, so much disappointment, surprises, shocks and that’s just for starters. Some people can be loving and some downright evil. You just wish there was more kindness in Serena's life. What a journey she has. Mind you , Devin has the ultimate horror in his life, close to home (no spoilers. There are so many ranges of emotions in this story it is one to read, one to put on the top of your reading list. Loved it

An almost winner

Apart from Serena, i mostly enjoyed the different characters in this book. Her character procrastinated so much, she had it down to an art form. Some of her scenes had me gritting my teeth and wishing that she just get on with her revelation. The author could have made her less wishy washy and she would be so much more lovable. Though i could understand her reasonings for holding back, she could have been given more backbone and bravado....afterall she did raise up a kid as a single parent, notwithstanding the help from her parents.

The plots flowed easily together and the editing was not that bad either. Not superb editing, but nothing that would irritate you or distract you from enjoying the story.

Serena and Devin

They had a one night stand which turned into a week. She was suppose to go to Paris with him. His Mother visited and told Serena he was engaged to keep her away from Devin.

Finding out she’s pregnant she tries to get a hold of Devin but his Mother sends her away.

Five years later Devin returns to NYC and Serena runs into him. He still has no idea they have a son and Serena is afraid that when he finds out she will lose her son. They still are very attracted to each other but Devin can tell Serena is keeping something from him.

This started out as such a good story and characters but it all went stale as the same mistakes were repeated several times with the same result. Could have been better.

Repetitive

Read two of these books & can’t remember which was first since they have same set pattern. It goes man meets woman & fall in lust & love. Sex, sex, sex. He is a veritable Prince Charming, rich, eligible but they are separated. Unplanned pregnancies & births are kept secret as 5-6 years go by. Once reunited the Prince
Charming’s welcome their new sons but now feel angry & betrayed toward their loves regardless of the circumstances which caused secret to be kept. Second chance love rekindled, sex, sex, HEA. I won’t be reading more of her books. These characters are all either close friends &/or relatives. There is even a third one I started with also repeated themes before becoming terminally bored.

Angsty secret child-second chance romance

5yr ago college student and part time waitress, Serena had a hot, one-week romance with one if NYC elite sons...then reality stepped in. Now Serena is a single mom and an event planner and she runs into none other than her former flame, Devin Roarke! Devin wants to rekindle their romance but Serena has more at stake this time around, not to mention Devin’s controlling and elitist mother. Seems as if any relationship is doomed...especially when Devin learns of Serena’s secret. Enjoyable story with a great mix of angst, steamy moments and an adorable 4yo.

Serena Moore, waitress and college student. Devin Roarke is a multi-millionaire who is being groomed to take over the business. From the moment they meet, sparks are flying. Serena tends to tell it like it is. Something Devin is not used to. But Mrs. Roarke was not having any of it. She is a snob of the first order and money buys you anything. Only Serena is not for sale, nor is her son. Life has a way of bring the truth out. Anger and words are exchanged. It isn't until Devon sees it with his own eyes, that the cobwebs are cleaned out. Love is strong. St. Patrick's Day has become a favorite holiday of theirs.

Devin and Serena met while she was working in a pub. That meeting led to an intimate night which spread to a week. When Devin was scheduled to go Europe he asked Serena to go with him but his mother put an end to it. What Serena didn't know at the time was that Devin had left her with a gift. It is four years later and he is home and reconnected with Serena. She is being guarded and keeping him at bay. Devin wants to reconnect but there is a big secret that stands between them not to mention his mother. Will they get their chance for a happily ever after when everything comes out ion the open?

I couldn't make up my mind on the rating. 3 stars seems fair.

It was a hit of a push to read this. I was hoping for a bit more chemistry and getting to know you moments. It was more about sex when they were alone together most times. Or they were too in their heads about trust and whether he or she doesn't have moments.

Their bond wasn't believing, and the chemistry was lacking luster.

(I am also picky. When you are describing a curvy girl in your book, put a curvy girl on your cover. Or make it discreet. Having a slim girl represent a curvy girl is insulting. )(Again, this is my own opinion and doesn't affect the outcome of my rating.)
