When pastor and televangelist, Bela Bigelow, accepts a challenge from a heavy metal singer named Gorr, he begins a deal with the devil from which he may never escape.
With God on his side, Bela believes he will win against the forces of darkness.
But if Gorr wins the wager, Bela will become the first and only televangelist for Satan!
From Hollywood to Hell, like Dorothy's house- just spinning and spinning and spinning and spinning... This is a powerful, unique, dark adult story about quite literally the rise of the Church of the Anti-christ on Earth over that of already long established religions which follow divine beliefs in the name of Judeo-Christianity. It has been written in a fascinating, and often humorous fashion, but be warned that it is 'full-on' from the very beginning and XXX-rated themes relating to blood, sex and satanic devil-worship prove to be the mainstay for the entire story. However, If not taken too seriously, then this absorbing alternative tale is really good 'fun' whilst also being very entertaining, but should possibly be avoided if themes such as wholesale debauchery, satanic rituals and stated blasphemous religious points of view are likely to cause upset, offence and distress to the reader. Although these topics are often challenging, or maybe even taboo in society, I found myself impressed by the way the author wove them together to construct this extremely pleasurable, enjoyable and highly amusing fictional storyline about the battle between the forces of good and evil, whilst many of the ideas, creativity and imagination employed in his narrative were often just first class. Looking forward - I can definitely see myself reading much more from this highly talented writer of adult, horror and supernatural fiction, unless however, I have just imagined this big black 'hole' read and it is was all just part of a fantastical dream into an alternative form of reality. Rating: Adult (definitely XXX) but also worth a very enjoyable and commendable 4.2 stars.
I’ll start off with the warnings, although given the title and the cover of the book it probably shouldn’t need saying, but: there are very graphic descriptions here of sex and satanic ‘stuff’ so if that offends don’t read this. There I said it, now let's get to the good bit...
This was a really interesting idea for a book. A religious man is challenged to go to a heavy metal concert, but is this just a deal with the devil? The religious man does not refuse, with god on his side he must go and prove himself, and even perhaps redeem some Satan worshipers along the way! Fine in theory and it sounds easy but when he and some fellow “men of god” turn up and the concert begins the sh*t really hits the fan.
It was such a simple and interesting premise. I loved the idea of it.
The religious people do not come across particularly well (deliberately so for they are greedy and manipulative) so we find ourselves on the side of the rock musician/demon? Or at least I did. It’s quite powerful watching men of faith lose that faith and with it their direction in life.
As with the last Rob Bliss book I read, he really manages to really bring the story to life with some great imagery, what an imagination and well told too. Albeit a somewhat disturbing read at times I found it fascinating and couldn’t stop reading.
My only downside was the ending, not bad, better than some, I would have preferred something even darker but then that’s just me.
Overall a gripping read, I was not expecting something quite like this, it had some really interesting ideas and at times came across as an R-Rated Theological debate! (In a good way!)
I really enjoyed, this, It’s pretty hardcore so not for everyone but I am going to give this 4.5, I don’t really want to round this down but not sure I can quite give it an ‘I love it’ rating of 5, so 4 will have to do, but remember it's a 4+!
"And I'll be right here. We've begun the first satanic televangelist program, my dear. And you were lucky enough to be in it." He glanced up at the cameras. "You'll be famous. Stay and it can be like the past. Just a different faith, a better god. Nothing really changes, does it? I'll be here waiting for you."
Devil’s Note is a difficult book for me to review. Initially, I enjoyed the plot and the crescendo that was building. Televangelist and Pastor, Bela Bigelow accepts a challenge from heavy metal singer, Gorr, things take a decidedly dark path. The writing was very good as with all of Rob Bliss’s work but I had a few problems with how the plot was developing and the deeper message that it probed.
The story focused on Bigelow and four pastors being invited to a rock concert. The heavy metal band and its followers are painted as evil, satanic worshippers. Which in the case of the story is true BUT where it went astray for me was the implication that the worst thing, that being gay was evil and was synonymous with being in league with the devil. There are vivid depictions of orgies and rape. Yeah, I just don’t think this one was me. I struggled with how the story developed.
Book had a rather disappointing amount of homophobia. Gay doesn’t equal satan. Writer needs to grow up. Time and time again the worst thing a guy could do in this book is seek gay sex. One guy was turned gay by his Dad spanking him? Did I get that part right?
