Fall, 1985. The small town of Kettle Hollow barely shows up on any maps, and four young friends are used to taking their BMXs outside of town in an effort to find anything interesting to do. But tonight their tendency to go off by themselves may have saved them, and also forced them into the adventure of a lifetime.
While they were away, Kettle Hollow has been locked down by the government, and a portal to another world has opened on Main Street. It's a world deep below the ground, a world where dinosaurs roam free, where giant plants and mutant insects hunt for prey. It's also a world where all their family and friends have been kidnapped for sinister purposes. Now, with time running out before the portal closes, the four friends must brave the unknown to save their loved ones.
Time is running out, and in the darkened tunnel of Subterranea, something is hunting them.
I have read this sci-fi short of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to recommend P K. Hawkins to friends and family. This is a tightly woven tale told very well.
The time is autumn, 1985. Kettle Hollow, Wisconsin is a tiny, insular town. Six hundred souls rubbing along together, trying to keep life in focus and purring along nicely. Except for the grouchy pharmacist, it all seems to be working out nicely. And then, while our four intrepid kids are off at the old quarry perfecting their BMX biking stunts, the unimaginable happens.
The youngest at 11, Murky was just along for the ride because their mother made Laura take her. George - or Henderson, as he prefers to be called, and Jesse are serious BMXers but not in the same class as is Laura. And when they return to town as the sun goes down, they each notice the complete lack of people separately before mentioning it. No people, no lights in the houses, no sounds of normal at all in Kettle Hollow.
They don't get scared until they run into the soldiers. And they don't get mad until they are told that their families and some more soldiers have all disappeared down a giant sinkhole and the military is set to blow it and Kettle Hollow up so no one else falls in. No effort will be made to retrieve the missing citizens. But that won't do. And despite the uncertainty and danger, it will have to be this undaunted foursome who goes down and rescues the townfolks. Will they find their friends and neighbors? Will they make it back to the surface? Will Kettle Hollow still even exist? Only time will tell...

Wasn't what I thought I was going to read. Story of government experiments gone wrong . Giant ants some dinosaurs and four teenagers save the day. Light entertainment, quick read.
Another one of those stories written strictly for entertainment purposes. Don't get me wrong the story was fun, but I wanted to see more dinosaurs whereas we did not get to see many of them at all. Regardless that the cover even shows dinosaurs in an acceptable image.
The characters were not fully developed, but when a story was written just for entertainment, that is pretty much all you are going to get.
I found this book to be an exciting short read. It reminded me of the type of books that would have thrilled you as a kid living before computers and home gaming systems. I would have given five stars if one thing had changed about my favorite character. Oh well! Definitely worth the read.
It's 1985 the cold war is still raging. A government experiment goes terribly wrong. When a portal opens up in the town of Kettle Hallow strange Ant people come out of it and kidnap the entire town. Leaving 4 pre teenage kids to rescue them. Probably more for younger readers but not a bad book. Note it did have some bloody parts.
Short and silly story about a government experiment that opened a time portal in a small town - releasing some kind of ant-like monsters. 4 kids find the portal and then dinosaurs, including a raptor that is tame. Right. This book is definitely aimed at children, and if it gets them interested in reading, I say great, but it is not a serious story for adults.
This was an early Christmas gift to myself. I really enjoyed this story. A small sleepy USA town is affected by an out of this world secret military project! What could possibly go wrong ? A Lot !!
A Cute throwback to 80s or 90s Adventure films ala The Goonies or Honey I shrunk the kids. While certainly not aimed for an older audience, it is a fun brief read for anyone looking for a good short to sink your time in.
Four fearless young kids, along with their BMX bikes, take on aliens while the clueless military look on. Pretty solid short story if you are into this kind of thing, which I am not. Three stars because it is a good example of the genre, but not really my bag.
