SOLD: Marks of a True Disciple

Rate this book
What is a disciple? Is a disciple somehow different than, a Christian? Too many pastors, authors, bloggers, social media posters, and Christian video producers affirm a false dichotomy that being a disciple is somehow different from being a Christian. The two are not separate but mutually inclusive. A disciple is a Christian and a Christian is a disciple.

S.O.L.D. seeks to define the term disciple as Jesus meant it. In the Gospels, Jesus says every disciple will be marked by four specific characteristics. A true disciple will be committed to sacrificing for Jesus, obeying what He taught, loving others in His name, and discipling others to follow Him. Within each mark is present a larger biblical theme that helps us evaluate and assess true Christianity in today’s culture.

What others have said:

"It has never been easy being a disciple of Jesus, and that’s probably more true today than ever before. Our contemporary world presses us with distractions and calls us to follow anything but the costly way of the Lord. Jared Price’s book provides the necessary skills for those who want to make—and become!—better disciples. Rooted in sacrifice and obedience, and marked by love and multiplication, the disciple-making model you’ll find in this book will help pastors, youth leaders, and anyone involved in gospel work to lead others closer to Christ. No page is wasted. The content is gold. You’ll be glad you read this book!"

-Dr. Bryan Litfin - PhD in Ancient Christianity from the University of Virginia, prolific author including the Chiveis Trilogy, and Editor at Moody Publishers.

"Jared Price has provided a fantastic and helpful primer on the high cost of discipleship. He has put the many pieces of the puzzle together to create a beautiful portrait of a true disciple of Jesus.”

-Dan Dumas - CEO of Red Buffalo, interim teaching Pastor, former Vice President at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and author of Live Smart.

"A thorough foundation in the Word! Not just one passage at a time dealing with the topics, but numerous passages that speak to the characteristics of discipleship. The style of writing makes reading feel like we were sitting together talking."

-Dr. R. Stephen Coffey - Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Regent University, Church Planter, Humanitarian, and U.S. Director at Christar.

"Jared Price's new book on discipleship is simply outstanding. Price reminds us that there is no distinction in scripture between being a Christian and a disciple. To be a disciple is to be sold out for Jesus in all areas of our lives. Read this book at your own risk--it may transform the way you think about your relationship with God and with others."

-Dave Furman - Senior Pastor, Redeemer Church of Dubai; author of Being There: How to Love Those Who are Hurting & Kiss the Wave: Embracing God in Your Trials.

Very thorough review of discipleship and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. I loved how the author uses the acronym of SOLD to represent what it means to be a disciple. SOLD stands for sacrifice, obey, love and disciple others. Not only does the author define a true disciple, but they then take each element and breaks it down with scripture, detailed explanation and practical application. This is one of my favorite parts of this book; using that the author brings each element to what it looks like in our every day life instead of just stopping at a concept, so that it is easily understood and applied by the reader.

One bonus was the explanation of the sacrifices in the Old Testament. I can finally say I understand the nuisances if each one. Another bonus was an review of humanities 4 needs Jesus met at the cross. This is another reason I love this book, there is little mint lessons tucked in among the high level points.
