The Complete Guide to Self Care features 100 accessible activities that help you reconnect with your body, mind, spirit, and surroundings, and leave you feeling refreshed and ready to face the world again.
Caring for yourself is far from selfish and self-care is far from a new phenomenon, but it’s recently been in the popular vernacular. With screens, work emails on our phones, notifications, and poor boundaries between ourselves and the world around us, taking time and making space for ourselves has become more and more important. Therapy, caring for plants, making your favorite dish…these are all little ways to reclaim parts of yourself that you’ve lost track of in the daily hustle of life.
With encouraging reminders, inspiring thoughts, easy wins, and practical advice, The Complete Guide to Self Care helps you identify your needs so you can relax, refuel, and find calm in your hectic life. This book tells you why mindset is key, how to nourish instead of punish yourself, how to exercise and sleep, and why it is important to go slow sometimes. You live your whole life being you, so why not be your own best friend?
The Complete Guide to Self Care is a book for people who need to relax, chill out, or recenter. You'll learn how to achieve this by:
• Setting an effective and fruitful sleep schedule • Creating exercise routines and not feeling bad about falling off the bike • Saying no to things you don’t want to do (and things that maybe you do but don’t have space for) • Reading, writing, art, music, and all forms of expression that water our soul • Setting aside time that is only for you, no one else, no exceptions • Watering yourself and giving yourself proper nutrients
In the tumults of our hectic world and your busy life, if you’re working toward being emotionally available and hungry for stability, a happier and healthier you is within your grasp.

For some self care comes easy but if you are easily stressed or suffer from depression or anxiety then sometimes it's easy to forget the little things so I found this really good. It's quite simplistic but in a good way with lots of activities to make sure you look after yourself. It's full of colour as well so makes for something lovely for the coffee table.
I really enjoyed this and it will make a good go-to book whenever I feel my mood slipping.
This is a lovely book with a wide variety of ways to take care of yourself, well illustrated with beautiful stock photos throughout. It's broken into categories of physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual self care. Examples of the individual activities are yoga, stretching, meditating, using a face roller, making simple facial oils and cleansers, volunteering as a way to make new friends, cutting back on social media that doesn't nourish you, reading (always a big one for me!), painting, making a vision board, grounding (walking barefoot), getting enough sleep (with very helpful tips on how to do that), learning a new skill, making a happy playlist, learning to say no, focusing on chakras, using journal prompts, and much more. Helpful steps are given for each activity.
Do note that the spiritual section is more along the lines of new age spirituality and not traditionally religious. Some people may not like the focus on things like chakras and manifestation instead of prayer and more traditional spirituality. I think there's enough here otherwise that folks can just take what they find useful and leave the rest, which is what I did.
I already do much of the stuff in this book. I've learned as a busy mom of 5 that self care is part of a healthy life and it's simply part of my routine as much as cooking supper is. I get the feeling I'm in the minority though, and this book is a lovely way to get some ideas if you feel the need.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
Oh my goodness this visually beautiful book is one of the sweetest books I have purchased this year! 😍 The colours and images are stunning, and the gentle and caring way the words are written is so lovely! I love the way this beautiful book made me feel. It put a smile on my face just browsing through the gorgeous pages and taking in the thoughtful messages and prompts throughout. What a lovely book to have the pleasure of owning! 💕
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is a beautiful book teaching you how to take care of yourself and helping you to understand self live ultimately comes from you yourself and how important this is. This book has good guides and pointers as well as activities to do to help you achieve certain areas it covers in the book. I loved lots of the ideas in this book and will be trying out at least 4. The information is easy to understand and relate to too.
A good coffee table book. Full of pleasant and simple advices with a collection of great pictures. I finished the book feeling positive and I say it achieved its goal.
* I received an e-ARC in exchange of an honest review from the publisher via netgalley .
Thank you to Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I liked "Complete Guide to Self-Care: Best Practices for a Healthier and Happier You", mainly because it was very clear from the start that the author wants you to go at your own pace and do whatever you want and can to spend some more time on you instead of whatever usually occupies your mind (family, friends, obligations, work, uni, etc.).
The book is full of suggestions from decluttering, to yoga to writing and comes with great exercises in every chapter, which gives you a start into any direction you want to take the suggestion in. Do you want to write about your day? Amazing, Kiki offers you a template to try it out. Do you want to go off on your own and just write whatever comes to mind? That is also A-Ok.
I love that this book doesn't tell you "you have to do this or else you fail". It is a gentle reminder that we need care as much as the people and things we take care of every day. The care might look a little different for a lot of people, however some are universal (enough sleep, hydration, exercise etc.). This book is here to give you a nudge and to encourage you, not to shame or force you into anything.
Complete Guide to Self-Care is therefore the perfect book for anyone who has been trying to take care of themselves but need that extra special nudge. And lovely pictures to go with it. Absolutely recommend for anyone who wants to change something for themselves and don't know where to start.
Here’s a book that seems to capture the zeitgeist right now. With so much of the world in ‘lockdown’, self-care has assumed an unprecedented importance. In this book, the term ‘self-care’ has a pretty broad remit, ranging from exercise and sleep, through the kind of activities you can do in isolation ( writing, reading , music ) to a brief section on ‘spiritual’ self-care (not for me!) There are probably few ideas in here that you haven’t heard before, but the little exercises dotted throughout and the aspirational , light-filled photos , make this a little treat to enhance your social- distance lifestyle. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Quick review for a quick read. It's really nice to pick up a coffee-table type book that you can quickly read through and not only get a number of inspiring and helpful tips, but is also aesthetically pleasing to look at. I felt that way about reading through "The Complete Guide to Self-Care" by Kiki Ely. I think you could say for as many dimensions as there are to taking care of one's well being, this book hit all the base points in an engaging way.
Among the topics it covers: physical wellbeing, mental/intellectual self-care and expression, spiritual self-care, and social self-care. Each section is broken down in a series of steps, hobbies, and considerations that make sense. Each section is coupled with calming photos, bullet points breaking down questions to ask yourself and steps to take through each exercise, and even recipes/DIY homemade goods to follow through and create yourself. If I didn't receive this as a galley, I would have purchased a book this for myself because, while it may be collectively familiar information to me from my own background in health/wellness, it was still a nice holistic reminder of what to look for to treat each of the dimensions of self-care.
Overall score: 4/5 stars.
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley from the publisher.
Nothing too deep but overall, a very pleasant book to flip through. Lots of reminders and tips on how to take care of yourself that your mum probably tried to drill into you growing up. Things like go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends, the pretty pictures I thought the book make that advice a lot more palatable than a nagging parent. That being said, my sleep cycle’s not great, so maybe I will try some of these exercises. I like the the suggestion of noting down my energy levels on an hourly basis over a week or two, then using that better understanding of myself to time block my schedule.
That being said, the strength of this book isn’t so much the (limited) information it provides as much as the suggested exercises and rituals to help live a more balanced life.
Honestly, it could’ve been half of what it was. It was pretty standard information. Interesting there was information about make your own skin creams but not hair products. The photos in the book were delightful however.
I’m nit picking now but if you know your book is going international why not have Celsius in bracket and Kilograms. And many grammatical errors
(I received a digital ARC via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.)
Oh my! What a pretty book! I never thought I've seen a prettier book ever!
And on that note, I really love how the book totally incorporate between telling and doing. We had two or three exercises/'doings' in each section so we wouldn't feel lost.
I particularly love the use of pretty pictures, the layout, and the overall theme. It truly embodies the self-care thing.
A very basic book on self-care and frequently in disagreement with itself. Simultaneously asking you to streamline your life as much as possible, and to do nothing. Asking you to love your body more and telling you to lose weight. If you aren't familiar with meditation, the importance of taking time for yourself and moving your body, then this is a decent introduction, but otherwise skip it.
*I received a free copy through Netgalley, but the review is my own opinion*
This book is so awesome. Amazing step by step guides for self care in all aspects of your life with even ideas on how do it yourself versus buying store products!! Highly recommend this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I loved being reminded that self care encompasses so many things. It's important to nurture ourselves on an intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual basis, and also to balance time alone with social time. This book is a good place to dip into for inspiration and identifying which areas of your life could use more balance and self care. Although you will want to explore some of these ideas in more depth with the help of other books, this is a great starting place as well as a fantastic reference to return to as a reminder of the many ways we can take excellent care of ourselves.
I picked this book up when I was going through a breakup years ago and wanted to invest in some self-care, and now finally finishing it I can say I actually really enjoyed it. It had many great techniques that I never would have thought of and was filled with colour and pictures that just sparked good feelings.
I would definitely recommend it if you're not sure where to start with some self-care practices.
What a great way to learn more tools and exercises to further take care of myself! What a great read, thank you for this lovely and shall I say pretty book!
Self-care is a broad and complicated concept, but a necessary one to engage with. When most people think of self-care; they think of face masks, guasha, everything showers, watching your favorite TV show, and getting eight hours of sleep. While these fall under the self-care umbrella, it disguises the more troublesome parts of self-care. Caring for yourself goes beyond the physical — it’s emotional, it’s spiritual, it’s social, it’s educational. Self-care could be a moment of prayer, cutting off a toxic friend, visiting a relative’s grave, or forcing yourself to eat a vegetable after eating nothing but cookie dough for three days straight (I have personal experience with that one). But framing self-care as something you do to yourself and not with yourself benefits society economically. If we convince ourselves that we care about our bodies and minds by putting on a twenty-dollar agave face cream and watching the latest episode of Love Island, we both buy into a cycle of vicious consumerism and trap ourselves in it. One important aspect of self-care is the recognition that you deserve better; that you deserve a clean house, good mental health, and a healthy body. And unfortunately for us, we can’t achieve that through merciless jade rolling. This is where Kiki Ely’s “Complete Guide to Self Care” comes in. If I may represent myself as a hypocrite for just a moment, I actually bought this book at Five Below along with a Bluetooth mouse and a tube of clear mascara. After completing my cycle of previously mentioned vicious consumerism, I cracked open the lavender-colored softcover book to find a trove of valuable self-care information that is worth sharing with others. Much like any other piece of literature on the planet, however, this book does not come without its flaws.
We all know that self-care is important & yet sometimes it’s difficult to figure out what else we need to do to alleviate recent or ongoing stress. Are you doing all you can to take good care of yourself? All of us could do a little more to bring our life into balance & this book will help with that.
The book is divided into sections that identify five major areas of focus & I really liked that organization. It worked really well for me to delve into all of one area before moving on to another area. The areas of focus for self-care are: Physical: movement, touch, sunlight, being present, hydration, nourishment, beauty, & sleep Intellectual: create, music, writing, reading, home, remaining child-like, efficiency, & social media Emotional: self-love, ritual, boundaries, mindset, ‘you’ time Spiritual: meditation, manifestation Social: people
The author has done a great job of highlighting a few things within each category & subcategory so that it doesn’t seem overwhelming. It is a full exploration of the topic without being overwrought or self indulgent. Ely has written a fantastic & helpful book about self-care that might help you as it helped me. Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Complete Guide to Self-Care is a manual and guide full of attractive and attainable suggestions for taking time out to care for ourselves, and evaluating and correcting the quality of our lives. Due out 2nd June from Quarto on their Chartwell Books. imprint, it's 168 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
The book is split into different areas of care: physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and social. Each chapter includes both exercises to do, and information and tutorials to put into practice. This book doesn't contain recipes for bath bombs or cucumber skin toner; instead it concentrates on meditation, visualization, and grounding to help the reader attain tranquility and inner peace.
The book has a nice layout, with photographs interspersed with relevant highlighted text boxes. There are lots of prompts which could easily tie-in effortlessly for writing, journaling, and other creative pursuits. The book's aesthetic struck me as very feminine, though there's no reason it couldn't be utilized equally by men.
Really pretty book full of good advice (if a bit heavy on the pseudo-science woo side of the equation). Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I thought this was one of the best books for self care that I have completed in a long time. I really like that it was divided into 5 sections (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Spiritual and Social). I love the author's descriptions and her own experiences throughout but she does it tastefully without being preachy, which is so nice about this book. I enjoyed the recipes too and definitely am going to try them... a self care book with food; yes, please! Of some of the current self help books out there, I highly recommend this one because it is positive and not preachy. Very thoughtfully written.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I will definitely be recommending this to my massage clients.
Man, do we need this book right now.. It debunks the self-care is buying yourself an expensive bath bomb and taking a picture of your bath myth that seems to be all over social media. There are many types of self-care and this book does a fantastic job of explaining them in easy to understand terms. This is the kind of book I want to have on my nightstand. The photos are stunning. The self-care exercises/activities are bite sized and can be applied as needed. The author makes sure to have you understand that selfcare is multifaceted and not one size fits all. She does a wonderful job explaining concepts that most people are still unfamiliar with. If you have struggled with your self-care routine, get yourself a copy of this book.
The book is visually delightful in addition to being very informative. It includes many actionable items and recipes to try the different types of self care.
The flow of the book is great. It's nicely organized so that you can easily skip around if you feel like you need to work on specific areas: physical, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and social. I read the book through once and plan to return to the activities that stood out to me.
I'd recommend this book as a gift either for yourself or a mother, sister, or friend interested in practicing self care. Even if they aren't a big reader, I think the practicality of a simple, easy to read manual will be well-received.
A fabulous book with tons of helpful tips and ideas to self care. We are all guilty of not looking after ourselves and this book reminds us that even the simple things can have an effect. It also gives you recipes and exercises to complete.
The book is in sections, and they are Physical, Intellectual, Social, Emotional and Spirtual. This makes is easy if you realise one area needs addressing over any others.
I love the colourings throughout the book, it certainly gives a self care, calming feel.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
I think I just found my new self-care Bible! Who doesn’t need some self love or to take a few minutes out of their day to themselves? I loved this self help book that covered different aspects of self care, like mind, body and spirituality. Not only was it a very pretty book with nice design and photographs, but it is interesting and has good advice to practise some self love. The exercises are easy to practice in your day to day life. I’ve been in a bit of a life slump, and I need to be more kind to myself. I am definitely going to start practicing some points in my daily life.
This book is simple to understand and concise with regards to concepts and explanations. Some ideas here may not be new but reminders of what you should be doing for your physical and mental well-being. As with most self-help books, I say chew the meat and spit out the bones. That means either apply these suggestions you feel you can incorporate into your life now, save some to attack later, or ignore. Good book to own so you will be able to make notes and keep yourself on track. I received an advanced reader copy from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
It's a simple and concise book about self-care, with sections that make it easy to follow. It's not re-inventing the wheel as some of the ideas in it is "old", but it's anyway a reminder. It's also sometimes in disagreement with itself, one place telling you to lose weight, and another place to love your body (not that those examples are mutually exclusive of course, as it is possible to love your body, yet still wanting to improve). I also suspect that one can easily find a lot of the information in this book online if one search a bit.
Super duper happy that I got the chance to read it thanks to net galley . I'm really glad because this book is a really good one who give you some tips and some receipt to take care of yourself. For me the best part, was about food, about how to disconnect of social media and also have some gratitude with yourself.
I know that this is a book that I'm going to buy just to re-read some part and to make the excercices. I feel like it's a start of a long journey ....
