Vacation People

Rate this book
Successful Chicago-based artist Lauren Hansen is on a layover in Las Vegas before heading to what was supposed to be the vacation of a lifetime with her partner. Until, that is, that partner became an ex.
Recovering from a nasty break-up herself, workaholic Penny Rothmor agrees to meet Lauren for dinner, but only out of a sense of obligation to her mother.
One thing leads to another, and soon Penny finds herself on a plane, jetting off to meet Lauren for a week on the beautiful island of Hawaii—but strictly as friends, of course.
As the bikini-clad duo relaxes and gets to know each other better, they begin to realize that there’s more to enjoy in Hawaii than just sun and sand—and that king-size bed is looking awfully inviting. What is it about the words “no strings attached” that are sure to create a tangled mess of desire, mind-blowing pleasure, and the pain of separation?

3.25 Stars. I thought this was a sweet romance. This is a debut for Ritz and while there were some issues, her writing shows promise and this was a satisfying debut. This is an age-gap romance with a tiny bit of fauxmance thrown into it. When it came to the age-gap, I almost forgot about it. It is discussed in the beginning but once the characters get beyond the initially stage of attraction, the age-gap issue is not brought up ever again. The fauxmance elements are small, with the characters pretending to be on their honeymoon. The fauxmance part is more there just for an excuse for the characters to do things together.

I did enjoy the romance. It is faster moving than I personally care for, but again for a type of sweet, beach-read romance, I don’t care as much. It’s not very realistic but so what. I thought they had decent chemistry and I was hoping for a HEA. I also thought the sex scenes were well done. While they are not overly long or overly explicit, there is enough variety that you don’t feel like you are reading the same intimate scene over and over. It was a nice change of pace.

While I found both mains to be nice and likeable, I didn’t feel they had the amount of depth I was hoping for. The mains being unlucky in love were one of the deeper facts about them. They both were pretty, rich, and successful with no real flaws, so to me that’s a bit boring. Too much about them was only on the surface and I wanted more so I could actually connect with them.

Unfortunately, the secondary characters were even worse. Instead of characters that drove the plot forward, they seemed to slow it down. Most of the secondary characters could be removed from the book and they would not be missed. But this was the kind of debut issues I was mentioning earlier and I’m sure Reitz will get much better with this the more she writes.

If you are looking for a beach read with an age-gap romance, this book might be for you. While there were a few debut stumbles, this was a perfectly nice read. I think there is potential with this author and I would read her again.

An ARC was given to me for a honest review.

Nicely done for a debut novel. There was some clumsiness in dialogue and in the characterization of the secondary characters, and there were some unnecessary repetitions and lags in the narrative (Paolo’s irritating interruptions for example). I cannot hold that against the author, because a lot of things in this book were well done, especially for a first-time author -- sweet age gap romance with appealing protagonists, a nice setting...
All in all, this book is a pleasant read and not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Will certainly read the author’s next book.

Penny is the daughter of a Las Vegas casino owner and loves her job there. After a breakup, she is forced to go on leave for a few weeks. She is not happy about it at all and is at a loss. On the same day, her mother’s friend, Lauren, comes to town on her way to Hawaii. She has come to meet Penny and offer her condolences on her mother’s passing. Lauren is a very successful photographer. She is going to Hawaii on what should have been an anniversary trip, had her partner not cheated on her. Penny and Lauren hit it off right away and it’s decided that Penny should go to Hawaii too. They both decided to leave real life behind and become “Vacation People”… as friends, of course…

I loved this sweet story! The chemistry and attraction between Lauren and Penny is so perfect. They fit together so well and Lauren fits in with Penny’s friends seamlessly. Their vacation is a lot of sexually charged fun and when they get back to Las Vegas after extending their vacation, things heat up and become even better. Naturally there are some problems and not everything is sunshine and roses but there is a lovely HEA!! The whole tale is full of Awww moments and mushy goodness! I can see myself reading this one again!

Debut author Cheri Ritz has written a pleasant and easy to read novel called Vacation People. It is a pure romance as well as an age gap romance between two beautiful and successful women (Lauren Hansen and Penny Rothmoor). Both have just broken up with their former partners when they meet and decide to go on vacation together to Hawaii. While they are on vacation, they become attracted to each other and the romance begins. The pace of the story is good and the setting is gorgeous obviously. The sex scenes are steamy. There is little angst, in spite of how the story begins with the two women breaking up with their partners.
There are a few things that bothered me. The characters seemed one dimensional to me. This is especially true of the secondary characters, but also the two main characters as well. Some of the secondary characters were just annoying. Also, some of the story is just not believable. I can’t see these actions happening in the real world.

In spite of a few problems, I think Ms. Ritz shows promise as an author, and I will look for more of her work. If you enjoy a pleasant romance with beautiful characters and an exotic setting, you might like Vacation People.

An Amazing read. Really. And in addition, a debut novel. A slowburn, age gap romance. I can't wait to read her next books.
Workaholic Penny, manages her father's casino in Las Vegas and just broke up with her boyfriend.
Lauren has a more artistic spirit, she is a photographer in Chicago and her wife has just left her. Their universes are therefore totally different.
These two characters will find themselves spending holidays together in Hawaii for various reasons (meeting between Lauren and Penny, at the request of the latter's mother, vacation required by Penny's father, Lauren booking a stay for her and her ex-wife for their honeymoon)
Penny and Lauren, are very endearing, their attraction is obvious. I had a great time with them.
Too bad the age gap, about fifteen years, is not more exploited, as well as Lauren who is friends with Penny's mother.
The cover is disappointing.
If I recommend it? Absolutly!

* I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review.

The accurate rating would be 3,5 but for a debut novel it was a pretty nice and interesting read and the MCs won me over with their behavior and niceness.
I admit that the age gap books are not in my personal favorite tropes list but this one worked for me because Lauren and Penny were equals in so many ways. In most age gap books one of the mains - usually the oldest- is the more dominant, successful, busy one (and very often an ice queen), so it gets boring and predictable after a while and I'm always a fan of more balanced relationships. In this book Penny even if she's the youngest, she's an ambitious and workaholic businesswoman ( her family runs a popular casino). Lauren is a famous photographer but when these two type A people meet they are somehow good for each other .
My only complain is that I would like to feel their chemistry a little bit more. When they got together and after that, it felt a little bit underwhelming.
Overall it was an impressive debut book and I cannot wait to read more from this author.

Vacation People is paced so well that I didn’t want to put it down. The character work is solid, the relationship is developed well, and the settings seemed vivid (although I’ve never been to Hawaii and I haven’t been to Vegas in 15 years, so I could be wrong about that). It also has very little angst, which was just fine by me. 3.5 stars rounded up.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.

Penny is a workaholic after finding her ex Bryce cheating she throws herself into her work but when she cause a scene her father thinks she should take time off.

Lauren is a successful artist she and her partner Carolyn was suppose to go on vacation of a lifetime but her ex tells she doesn't want to be together anymore.

While in layover in Las Vegas Lauren has dinner with her friend daughter Penny who made a promise to meet Lauren. While they are out Penny friend suggest she goes on the trip to Hawaii with Lauren even though they just met and decide to do just that.

So Lauren and Penny become vacation people as they get to know each other their feelings start to change to attraction both wonder should they act on it. What I found funny is when they about act on their attraction someone always interrupt them and the moment is gone but they do get together and decide to have a fling since they both still hurting over their exes and Penny still having time off and Lauren show being postpone decide to continue their fling in Las Vegas where Penny work and lives.

This was a cute HEA story for two ND realizing that sometimes work isn't everything sometimes you need to live.

Before they know it Lauren and Penny become "Vacation People" on what was to be Lauren's honeymoon in Hawaii. While in Hawaii for the week they slowly grow closer and take time to learn about each other and their respective lives.

For me the book started off very choppy with the writing and the descriptions. However, I'm happy that that didn't give up on the book. Once I got past the first 15% or so the writing become better and a delightful storyline took over. I grew to care about the characters as they grew to care about each other. There was a nice HEA ending with both characters realizing that life involves more than just work.

I would read additional books from this new author.

Cute age-gap, vacation-fling romance novel ... with enough uniqueness to make the vacation-fling romance work. Also has a bisexual lead!

Lauren and Penny are both having a really bad time. Lauren's long-time partner has just left - right before an anniversary trip to Hawaii. Penny has been placed on leave at her job working for her family's casino business. The two women both have dilemmas: Lauren doesn't want to go to Hawaii alone and Penny needs to get away from her all-consuming job obligations. When Lauren stops by Las Vegas on her way to Hawaii to meet with Penny - the daughter of Lauren's childhood friend, a solution to their problems emerges... Penny should go with Lauren to Hawaii.

This story is full of clichés and some of the situations it includes have not always made much sense.

It has a wide age gap, since one of the main characters is the high school best friend of the other main character's mother. So there is an age difference between them of about 18 years. But this really don't matter much in the way which the story is developed. Then, there is age gap, but as if it were not so.

It also has a strangers to friends to lovers path, in a time interval of three weeks or so. Quite unvelievable.

The two protagonists are: gorgeous, wealthy, successful, they don't seem to have defects. On the other hand, in the aspect of love relationships they have not had much luck so far. Until they meet.

One of the things that I have least appreciated has been that the story has several unnecessary characters, in my opinion, that make you lose the thread of the story, such as Timothy, or the bachelor party guys, or Paolo. I really didn't understand the role of Scott, I know that in the end it seems that he has a relatively important role but if he had not had it, the central story would not have changed much.

So I think the approach of the story is fine, but then some important parts have not been well explained. Simply a regular story.

An advanced reading copy has been sent to me by the publisher Bella Books through Netgalley for my honest review

This book falls both into the fauxmance and age-gap romance fiction tropes, but both are under developed and void of stakes. The fauxmance doesn't quite work because there's little point of sustaining it--the main characters stay together as friends (initially) in a honeymoon suite, reaping the benefits of...a free drink? There was absolutely no danger of them being "uncovered" and very little reason to play up that storyline. The age gap here is significant (18 years) and it's both refreshing and strange that it doesn't get much focus. Very early on there may be one throwaway line about their age difference, but other than that, it never really comes up again and doesn't play a part in the story. But despite one character being 50 and the other around 32 or so, everyone acts and sounds like they're in their early 20s. I just didn't get much chemistry from these characters at all. The strongest parts of the story take place in Hawaii, but instead of showing the characters becoming closer through action and dialogue, instead we're told. More time is spent drawing out side characters and giving them personalities then really developing these leading ladies or a believable relationship between them. Decent effort by a first time author who needs to work on showing and not telling.

This book was a delightful read! It's a debut novel from Cheri Ritz and it's an age gap romance about two women who make a spur of the moment decision to go on vacation together, and wind up falling in love. The action is split between Vegas and Hawaii, and the author does a great job capturing the spirit of resort life vs real life as an ongoing theme. There are just enough light obstacles to result in the requisite number of missed opportunities and relationship missteps before it wraps up with a happily ever after ending.

Romances in general tend toward the formulaic - of course they do, it's a formula that keeps readers coming back again and again - but there are several elements of Vacation People that make it stand out.

The first is Penny (who I'm picturing as Tatiana Maslanay fwiw), our bisexual protagonist, whose bisexuality is as normal a part of her character as her drive and ambition and sense of fun. It's not sensationalized, it's not vilified, and it's not newly discovered. She's written as a queer woman the whole way through, with a burly male ex-fiance and a sexy female burgeoning love interest. Visibility and representation matter, and I'm happy to say this book does a great job on both counts.

The second is said love interest, Lauren (older, artistic, totally Laura Dern). I really love the fact that she's fifty years old and the romantic lead! Also, because she's older, she behaves in a much more direct way than standard issue heroines in romance novels usually do. She's mature enough to know what she wants and to have good communication skills about it. Plus, she has recently gotten out of a long term relationship, and her life is richly drawn as still being full of possibilities.

On top of all that, I'm a big fan of the way this book integrates Lauren into Penny's friend group. So many romances are a swirl of two people who get so wrapped up in each other that the whole world falls away...and okay, the two of them spend a large chunk of the story on vacation together. But they're still in touch with friends via calls and texts, and when everyone is in Vegas, Lauren is constantly interacting with Jenna and Mara and others at brunch and at the bar. That's another reflection of the way people come together in real life, in community instead of isolation, and it makes their compatibility feel much more natural and genuine. Especially when (mild spoiler alert) relocation is under consideration, it makes sense that having a group of friends would be a significant factor.

All in all, it's been a rough news week and I'm giving Vacation People five stars because it was a perfect book to escape into for awhile. Highly recommend for reading on a beach, soaking in the bathtub, etc.

Two women who just met end up going on a vacation together to get away from their problems.
I loved the whimsical way these two women are thrown into this entire situation. This book is such a fun read, I was smiling the whole way through.
Penny and Claire are both so fantastic and lovely characters. Their attraction and spark are clear and instant yet their relationship builds naturally. I especially found the start of their romance to be delightfully saccharine.
These women put insecurity and self-consciousness on a whole new level. It is often silly and endearing the way they second guess everything and make assumptions about what the other is thinking or feeling. It some how made me love them both more.
The Vacation People mantra they developed was a fun way to get them to let go a bit and really get to know one another.
There is a significant age gap for this romance. The budding relationship between Penny and Claire was adorable. The sex scenes were spicy and passionate.
Penny's friend group were so awesome. I hope Ritz writes a sequel that follows on of the other girls of the group so we can see more of them.
I was completely emotionally invested in Penny and Claire's relationship and loved every minute of their story.
