Re-reading as I finally buy. You (whoever you are) know the drill.
Five stars for the whole series. Did I love the ending? Yes... and meh. Not really any dislikes, more along the lines of disappointment.
Pros
-Haru and Legoshi's ending
*These two crazy kids got engaged in the sweetest, strangest way! We all know Legoshi proposed to Haru way back in the murder-solution arc (guy just casually lets it slip over a library study session). And although he's talked about marrying her many times, they've never called each other fiancé. Haru proposes to Legoshi by saying: "Will you marry me and then divorce me?", seeming to mean, these are the outcomes of a normal marriage, but it goes double for hybrids, will you just take the good with bad and understand that we can't fix everything, but we can be a normal couple this way. And we'll be happy, maybe not all day everyday, but everyday.
*Legoshi says yes, because, duh. And once he does, Haru begins to fear her own mortality in that his answer causes her heart to pound a bit too hard. This shows great character growth on her part, because not even a few volumes ago, she accepted her fate as a weaker animal, even staring dead rabbits in the face with Legoshi at the Black Market. Not to mention consenting to letting Melon eat her! But now she slows her heart, realizing that she has a lot to live for not just for herself, but Legoshi and their future children. I just thought it was funny. Like, girl, this is what makes you panic?
*Also, they come full circle twice! The whole proposal goes down in the train station, where way back in the first arc, Legoshi was afraid of the negative connotations of holding Haru's hand while trying to outrun the Shishigumi. And finally, when Legoshi first "meets" Haru, he's holding her from behind, cradling her to him, with her facing away as he prepares to eat her. But in the final frames, Haru leaps into Legoshi's arms, facing him as he cradles her. And once he puts her down, they began dancing, just like the do in the anime's opening credits! Be still, my heart! And if that's not enough, an officer mistakes the embrace for an attack, only for Haru to laugh and say (without even breaking their dance) "Don't worry, he's my fiancé." AWWWW!
-Juno walking away
*At first, I was very upset at Louis and Juno's less than stellar "romance": Louis and Juno are on a train, preparing to go on a date, when Juno kind of saves him the trouble by essentially calling him weak while she's gotten stronger (she proceeds to show how she's mastered her carnivorous instincts by sticking his hand in her mouth for a "kiss"). She tells him he will never be happy with a "fangless kiss" (ref. to his fetishizing her instead of truly loving her). She leaves of her own accord to walk the streets a lone, but independent wolf. I do wish Louis would've been braver, but this is a good thing for Juno. Shows she's strong enough to not just be simpering after someone else; she deserves true love for Juno, not just Juno the wolf.
-Jack's personal HEA
*I know it's minor, but I'm happy to see that after a few tough chapters (one of which saw Jack contemplate his own suicide) that Jack's going to a top college. I think he deserves a slice of life piece in BEASTARS complex.
Meh
-Louis's ending
*God, I really wanted him to be brave and love Juno, who is so much better for him than Azuki. But I had to remember that Louis was never into changing the world through love, interspecies or otherwise. His top priority was showing strength through business and legacy. His marriage is a sham, I hate to say it, but he does what his father asked of him and after their brief reconciliation before Ogma's untimely death, I think Louis finally achieved the kind of success he truly wanted.
-There is no new BEASTAR
*What happened, Paru? Is it the cheesy, "The real BEASTARS were the friends we made along the way" bit? I must know why the title appears moot!
Bonus:
*Juno and Louis's fateful "date" song: "About You"-The 1975
*Haru and Legoshi's ending: "I'm in Love With You"-The 1975
Calling this "Zootopia but darker" is both true and an insult to the originality that is BEASTARS. I wanted it to end in Haru and Legoshi's wedding, or maybe them taking their first child to Cherryton and running into Louis and Juno. But alas, our revels now are ended.
