Nota final 4.5

Pretty much the only weak volume in the series.

Paru Itagaki is a new manga author so maybe she just didn't know how to wrap her series up better. As a result, this was a weak, anticlimatic ending to an otherwise amazing series. All the other volumes were solid 5 stars from me, so I was dissappointed to say the least.

The last volume had little to no romance, but it also lacked the rest that made Beastars great.

None of the characters really grew in this volume, especially not Legoshi, Louis or Haru. They were all set in their ways.

Haru had been in a stalemate, waiting for Legoshi for nearly 10 volumes and guess what, I grew bored of it. She is an interesting character who deserved more page time.

Several plots were just dropped. It was a meh ending to something great.

I love beastars; it's so earnestly weird. Overall I would give the series a firm 4.5 stars, but the ending is not much of an ending. There are a lot of loose ends, and frankly I'm not entirely sure what was overall accomplished, world-changing wise? The ramifications of things that happen throughout the story aren't explained, and the comic just kinda stops.

I look forward to the rest of the anime adaptation and expect some changes to be made, as you do. Also, I just really liked the art a lot. There's some great expressions lol. I will miss Louis standing bug eyed in the background, staring at the ground.

3.5 ok, this review is for the end of the manga — if that ain’t this one, tough pansies. i’m a dumb pirate whose website doesn’t say the volume number.

i think this whole thing kinda went downhill after legosi lost all his teeth. yeah, there were still good parts, but if the first half is a five, the second is a three. melon was a great villain, but he doesn’t make up for literally half of the cast disappearing. where did haru go for the last fifty chapters? where was she during the whole black market alley invasion?

and that kind of leads me into my biggest complaint, the ending. okay, so, we knew louis and legosi were a no go from the start, despite them having the more romance/sexual tension near the end than literally everyone else, and fine, whatever. legosi and haru was sweet, fine, cute. but my girl juno was rejected by louis so he could rise in the business world and keep up the notion of him being a little christian deer boy?? excuse me? juno was so screwed over she didn’t even get a little scene to herself at the end when we try to wrap up all the loose threads because this story wasn’t halfway being close to done and rushed to hell at around chapter 190. also we needed more closure we piña and the polar bear. but piña gets a scene and my baby juno doesn’t? we just screw her over like that? i’m not one normally big on closure and happy endings or whatever but the ending of this manga is really rough.

that said, i’ve been keeping up with the weekly releases for about a year now and i am genuinely sad to see it go. it was a strange and wild ride, the characters were so good, i just wish more care would have been put into the ending.

We're finally at the end of Beastars, and I've got a lot of thoughts. Strap in.

The non-spoiler version is that overall this series is really frustrating. It sets up an interesting premise and world in the early chapters - but as the story goes on it turns into much more of a standard shonen plot of Legoshi just taking down increasingly more difficult bosses until he finally beats the final boss. If you were sucked in by the romantic conflict in early volumes, that's almost entirely abandoned by the time we get to the end here.

Spoilers now.

Final volume!

The first half of the book wraps up the action plot so the second half can turn to the romance and squaring away the supporting cast.

This is a goofy book that the author was obviously improvising at high speed up against a chapter a week deadline. Lots of characters and plot elements got dropped or took rapid twists or developments for the sake of moving along to the next chapter.

Still, the high energy delivery and the dark undercurrents of coexistence of carnivores and herbivores -- predator and prey -- kept this an engaging roller coaster from start to finish.

And it turns out there's a spin-off series, Beast Complex, Vol. 1, I can use to wind down and wean myself from the Beastars universe. Onward!

This is the first manga I’ve ever read, and I loved it. The world-building is so interesting, that I’ve been thinking about all the minutia for weeks.

Like how do celebrities, besides the Beastar, play into all of this? Has the media ever criticized a carnivore singer who made controversial music about how eating meat is cool, and how it’s problematic for young carnivores to listen to? What about a herbivore director who makes speciest movies about carnivores?

Is Legosi jealous of Gouhin because he basically has the best of both worlds? He gets to have a strong carnivore body and has little to no meat cravings due to his body allowing him to sustain himself on a bamboo diet.

Do omnivores even exist in their world? Bears, hippos, and pigs are classified as omnivores, but the manga classifies them as carnivores.

Lizards are some of the few animals that can regrow their tails after it’s cut off, so could a lizard make a living selling their severed tails as meat to the black market? If a carnivore ate the tail of a lizard, would that still count as predation?

We've seen carnivores getting cosmetic surgery to look like herbivores like that mayor, but what about an herbivore getting cosmetic surgery to look like a carnivore? I want to see a sheep getting their teeth sharped, fang implants, or sharp acrylic nails so they can defend themselves like a carnivore. The closest we have so far to seeing a herbivore who acts like a carnivore is Kyuu. Why aren't there more herbivores taking up martial arts? Especially the ones who live in the city.

Society admires same species couples, but how do they see couples who aren’t technically the same species but are relatively close enough? How does society see a cougar dating a lion, a crocodile with an alligator, a mouse with a hamster, or a seagull with a goose?

What about a falcon dating a pigeon? Even though they’re both birds, one is still a carnivore, and the other is an herbivore. How are different types of mixed-species animals viewed by society?

Gosha didn’t give too many details on what kind of mixed kids were at the daycare he volunteered at, and Melon and Leano were the only flushed out half and half mixed animals we knew. They were also extreme cases. But what about soft mixed species like a komodo dragon and venomous snake hybrid?

If Yafya hates carnivore criminals enough to turn them into fertilizer for his carrots, why hasn’t he made any laws that force any carnivores that commit predation to have their claws and fangs permanently removed? Or have all carnivores wear obedience collars that shock them when their adrenaline is too high? Kinda like the original idea of Zootopia.

Why haven’t scientists made a pill that suppresses venom and poison, or for that matter, carnivore impulses in general like the muscle restraining pills that Riz took?

How exactly does society see “domesticated” cats and dogs? They’re technically carnivores, but a dog is drastically different from a wolf/coyote/fox. Jack doesn’t get too much attention, but from what we’ve seen, not many herbivores seem to be as openly afraid of him as Legosi or his other roommates. Based on his flashback, other carnivores seem to idolize dogs for their intelligence and ability to get along with other animals more easily. When Jack has his meltdown in 153 he fears that a dog’s obedience and lack of emotion makes them prone to being used for evil things. So how does Jack feel about Collot? Does he fear him being potentially evil because he’s a dog too? Are sheepdogs different from other dogs? For that matter, are certain dog breeds stigmatized amongst the dog species like Pitbulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and Chow Chows? Also, how are dogs that are close to the wolf species treated by society like Alaskan malamutes, Akitas, and Huskies?

Re-reading as I finally buy. You (whoever you are) know the drill.

Five stars for the whole series. Did I love the ending? Yes... and meh. Not really any dislikes, more along the lines of disappointment.

Pros
-Haru and Legoshi's ending
*These two crazy kids got engaged in the sweetest, strangest way! We all know Legoshi proposed to Haru way back in the murder-solution arc (guy just casually lets it slip over a library study session). And although he's talked about marrying her many times, they've never called each other fiancé. Haru proposes to Legoshi by saying: "Will you marry me and then divorce me?", seeming to mean, these are the outcomes of a normal marriage, but it goes double for hybrids, will you just take the good with bad and understand that we can't fix everything, but we can be a normal couple this way. And we'll be happy, maybe not all day everyday, but everyday.
*Legoshi says yes, because, duh. And once he does, Haru begins to fear her own mortality in that his answer causes her heart to pound a bit too hard. This shows great character growth on her part, because not even a few volumes ago, she accepted her fate as a weaker animal, even staring dead rabbits in the face with Legoshi at the Black Market. Not to mention consenting to letting Melon eat her! But now she slows her heart, realizing that she has a lot to live for not just for herself, but Legoshi and their future children. I just thought it was funny. Like, girl, this is what makes you panic?
*Also, they come full circle twice! The whole proposal goes down in the train station, where way back in the first arc, Legoshi was afraid of the negative connotations of holding Haru's hand while trying to outrun the Shishigumi. And finally, when Legoshi first "meets" Haru, he's holding her from behind, cradling her to him, with her facing away as he prepares to eat her. But in the final frames, Haru leaps into Legoshi's arms, facing him as he cradles her. And once he puts her down, they began dancing, just like the do in the anime's opening credits! Be still, my heart! And if that's not enough, an officer mistakes the embrace for an attack, only for Haru to laugh and say (without even breaking their dance) "Don't worry, he's my fiancé." AWWWW!
-Juno walking away
*At first, I was very upset at Louis and Juno's less than stellar "romance": Louis and Juno are on a train, preparing to go on a date, when Juno kind of saves him the trouble by essentially calling him weak while she's gotten stronger (she proceeds to show how she's mastered her carnivorous instincts by sticking his hand in her mouth for a "kiss"). She tells him he will never be happy with a "fangless kiss" (ref. to his fetishizing her instead of truly loving her). She leaves of her own accord to walk the streets a lone, but independent wolf. I do wish Louis would've been braver, but this is a good thing for Juno. Shows she's strong enough to not just be simpering after someone else; she deserves true love for Juno, not just Juno the wolf.
-Jack's personal HEA
*I know it's minor, but I'm happy to see that after a few tough chapters (one of which saw Jack contemplate his own suicide) that Jack's going to a top college. I think he deserves a slice of life piece in BEASTARS complex.

Meh
-Louis's ending
*God, I really wanted him to be brave and love Juno, who is so much better for him than Azuki. But I had to remember that Louis was never into changing the world through love, interspecies or otherwise. His top priority was showing strength through business and legacy. His marriage is a sham, I hate to say it, but he does what his father asked of him and after their brief reconciliation before Ogma's untimely death, I think Louis finally achieved the kind of success he truly wanted.
-There is no new BEASTAR
*What happened, Paru? Is it the cheesy, "The real BEASTARS were the friends we made along the way" bit? I must know why the title appears moot!

Bonus:
*Juno and Louis's fateful "date" song: "About You"-The 1975
*Haru and Legoshi's ending: "I'm in Love With You"-The 1975

Calling this "Zootopia but darker" is both true and an insult to the originality that is BEASTARS. I wanted it to end in Haru and Legoshi's wedding, or maybe them taking their first child to Cherryton and running into Louis and Juno. But alas, our revels now are ended.

The warm fuzziness in my chest will come back each time I’ll think of this series again.
This last book made my heart smile the most ♡

If you haven’t read this series yet- take this as your sign

It is incredibly complex in its implications. We can truly explore the different meanings and use them as lenses to understand human interactions in our societies.
This series is much more profound than it might seem, and it is why I love it so much. Ever changing and multifaceted, I recommend diving into this intricate world to change our perspective (and feel affection pouring from our hearts).

My favorite quote:

« In my opinion, any interaction with someone else is an inter-species relationship. Above anything else, I wanted to describe the value and the cruelty of such a thing. »

—Paru Itagaki

The final volume! So happy I stuck with this strange series, it’s ended up being one of my favourite mangas I’ve ever picked up. Though the finale seemed a little rushed, I’m happy with the ends that got tied up, and I do feel like it was the right time for the story to come to a close.

I hope the author continues with this world through her spin off series “Beast Complex” because it really is a fascinating universe she’s created, and I’d love to live in it a little bit longer.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

The ending was a bit underwhelming for me, with very few of the characters around Legoshi getting their arcs fulfilled. For example, Jack is going to university. I mean, good for him, but I had the feeling he wanted to do something else based on how he reacted to the Whale Ex Machina information prior in the story. Juno and Louis's relationship is fairly tragic as well. It kind of felt like the characters (outside of Haru and Legoshi) settled into the status quo of their society. I do feel a bit sad for Haru; she's shaped up to be a rather large character and then kind of ends up as a symbol for Legoshi's protective instinct, getting far less time than Louis. Louis ends up as Legoshi's other half (plus or minus a foot), while Haru barely appears at all other than to act as Legoshi's temptation, and, finally, his reward. Legoshi often thinks of the hybrid children he could have with Haru, yet we rarely hear her thoughts on this at all :(.

Things I liked:
The artstyle, as usual, was pretty gorgeous (the Legoshi in a rabbit costume thing made me think the Hidden Chimaeras were back tho)
Legoshi's remarks about the girls' uniform (though him only fighting the female fox squad wearing heels felt a bit random, and I didn't like how he had to protect them in the end)
The twist that Melon's father was just a deadbeat dad, which means that relationships between carnivores and herbivores really can work out.

Scattered questions:
Who did Melon's mail come from when he's in prison?
Why did the Hidden Chimaera just not come into play?
What happened to the Drama Club and all its members? Theater and melodrama seemed to be an integral part of the series (though that could just be my view from watching the anime first, which leant hard into theater throughout the first season).
Why did no one seem to care that Gosha and Legoshi were related? (Tangent, but when Melon fired while legoshi said "Grandpa", I was 100% sure Gosha was going to get shot. Why did that not happen? I love Gosha but it could've been a better twist than Melon literally just shooting himself again.
WHY ARE LOUIS AND LEGOSHI NOT BEASTARS? It's hinted at throughout, be it by talking about how beastars plural isn't a thing, or the parallels between Yahya and Gosha, and Louis and Legoshi. I mean, Legoshi solved Tem's murder and Louis helped reshape society by openly acknowledging the black market (seriously not sure how that worked out though), and the series is named "Beastars"! It all felt a bit misleading that the whole concept of the Beastar is left so underdeveloped, though that could be due to never having the end planned out? I don't know.

No matter what, I still think Beastars is a great piece of speculative fiction, and I hope that season 3 of the anime can rectify/do damage control to the ending. I will devour it and the other companion works Paru has been putting out all the same.

I'm treating the final volume as my review of the entire series. It never figured out what it wanted to be? Shonen crime fighter? Gritty psychological thriller? Shoujo romance? Slice of life? It had elements of all these things and more, but because it couldn't even narrow down it's focus, it was never "good" at anything. It jumped the shark really early on for me, but I pushed through to the very end because I wanted to see the conclusion. Instead it just kinda...ends. It feels like the story could keep going literally as long as the author wants it to because there's no resolution to anything and basically everything is in the same place it was about ten volumes ago?

I'm really disappointed overall because it had a strong first few volumes and then just got derailed really badly and never found its footing. The romance wasn't compelling. It seems like it was trying to be a story about how racism is bad, but in a society where one "race" literally eats the other one...idk...the ball was fumbled so hard here.

There needed to be a lot more time in the oven to pull this one off. The art style was good, the writing left a lot to be desired.
