This was a very helpful and educating book!! Personally, i've done some years of therapy in the past, so i knew some things that were said in this book, but i still learned some new things, were reminded of some others, and were given some tips and ideas about journaling my feelings, my anxiety and techniques that help me! Definitely recommend it, not only for people with anxiety disorder but generally for those that have a hard/unpleasant time with their stress and want to find effective and healthy ways to cope
As an individual with anxiety who is wanting to understand it better, I didn't feel like I got any information that I didn't already know. I was disappointed with how short some sections were. I was hoping to hear more about the types of medications but that section barely touched on anything other than how long one to two types of med are recommended to be on. Some of the information was insightful, but at the end of it I just felt underwhelmed and like I was just left without any new knowledge. The language and casualty throughout the book was also very bothersome to me.
This book was so disappointing. I paid to purchase it on Audible after reading "Unf*** Your Brain" and "Your Brain on Anxiety" by the same author because I found them so useful. Unfortunately this book was mostly compiled of chapters from the previous two books I already read!! Would highly recommend just reading the "Your Brain on Anxiety" book that is FREE on Audible since 50% of this book is a repeat of chapters from that book.
I can’t believe I finished this. What an awful concept. I would not recommend. Basic stuff with extra swearing. This could have been done well. It wasn’t.
This was a quick listen and I enjoyed it, it was very funny and I heard it all before but I enjoy listen to it and I wouldn't mind listening to more of her books.
I come from a long line of anxious people, though I think each generation has gotten better at dealing with it. Swirling around in my brain are the tools to deal with my anxiety, depression, anger, and everything else that holds me back from being the best Onion possible; but every once in a while I need to read a book to remind of where those damn tools are, and how to use them. And sometimes I even learn some new things along the way.
Unf*ck Your Anxiety was a good book; it's tiny (smaller than my hand), about 115 pages, and written in an easy to understand way. The author, Faith G Harper has a lot of letters after her name, but when I read their writing it feels like a friend talking to me in a very down to earth manner. There are parts that I didn't find too helpful, and I don't know if I learned anything new, but it definitely inspired me to get deeper with my meditation and pay more attention to what I'm putting into my body, while also reminding me that anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of, even if a lot of people act like it is. It's normal, and—like a lot of things—used to serve a real purpose (and still sometimes does).
This world is stressful, and epigenetics are real, so we're not only carrying the angst of living in the world in 2024, but also that of our ancestors. Not only that, but the future isn't looking like it's going to be any better. If you're dealing with anxiety (and I know you are) and either have no idea what to do with it, or need a little jump start, I suggest picking up this book.
If you do read it and want to talk about it, please let me know. And if you work at Microcosm, good job, but maybe pay a bit more attention to editing. If you're looking for an editor who works cheap, hit me up.
Our brains are made to protect us from danger. The problem is that even after the situation has passed, the reactions, the anxiety, sometimes stay. The brain hasn’t fully realized that the threat is over. This book talks about anxiety in a way that helps you understand what’s going on, especially from a science-based perspective. At the same time, it offers practical tips you can actually use to manage anxiety in real life. It’s a short book. Very easy to read and easy to finish. The science parts aren’t heavy or intimidating. It feels more like a friend explaining things in a clear, relatable way rather than a textbook.
Like the Joker tempted Batman, tonight I broke my one rule and read this self help book about anxiety out of morbid curiosity since I have GAD. Look, this book is irreverent and technically truthful. It’s just at this point in my life I’ve accepted anxiety and a little pill with a chicken on it or crystal skulls aren’t something I’m looking for. Frankly without anxiety I’d have broken a long time ago. There comes a point where you accept, embrace, and make that shit WORK for you if it’s going to work you. That’s a message I don’t see enough here or elsewhere - if you can get there, and it’s hard, soon you’ll be like that Kylo Ren MORE MORE meme with anxiety - like an old friend you can’t stand but couldn’t imagine living without. Ya dig?
I'm not a fan of "self-help" books in general and I'm not even sure if I would categorize this as such, but if it was, it is definitely my kind of self-help: straight to the point, here are your tools, pick what works and DO THE WORK. I think this is a great reminder (and an easy read/listen and short) to anyone who even just feels stressed sometimes or overwhelmed. I mean, who doesn't? Damn, I might finally go buy that weighted blanket I've been reading about...!
A quick and helpful read. I like how she explains the nervous system response to stress and explains the different types of anxiety as well as tips to cope.
The book provides everything you should know when dealing with or getting to know anxiety. It is written in very understandable matter with examples and guides.
I loved this book and found the way that the author explained anxiety to be very interesting. I also thought the techniques they offered were very helpful. I would recommend this book to any anxious person or someone who’s trying to understand someone with anxiety.
Faith has the ability to turn something that is still seen as taboo by many people into something real, without making you feel like there’s something wrong with you, and sorry – there’s just no hope for you.
We all feel anxiety for different reasons, and sometimes those reasons are unknown to us. We’re triggered by something, sometimes something we can’t even pinpoint in that very moment, and we go downhill from there. The audiobook has an entertainment value, even for such a morbid subject and is very insightful. I love the introduction of different explanations to understand why we feel anxiety and about the types of anxieties, we actually know very little about. The techniques offered to help are great and there were some that even surprised me and helped when I felt anxiety take over a few times.
I’ll keep recommending her books on my blog because they have a no-bullshit approach, aren’t condescending and unlike many self-help books I’ve listened to, are actually useful.
Content - The content focus on simplifying anxiety for those who want to understand what they are going through. By simplifying the history and treatment paths of anxiety disorder, this read was easy to follow as a support worker and has given me more insight into the importance of alternative options other than medications.
Audio Quality - Good, listened via audible.
Overall - Was a good listen, simple to follow along with.
Recommendation - . Recommend to anyone wanting a basic understanding of anxiety and how it affects the body and mind.
This was a pretty good read. I found multiple things that I’d like to try out here as soon as now to try and combat my anxiety. The science was interesting overall, as well.
If I had any complaints, the writing style could get cringey at points and I wished her leftism didn’t show as much. Once you got into the meat, down the middle science and coping mechanisms, she mostly dropped it and that’s all I wanted.
I’ve started a lot of self-help books like this but this one is one of the only ones I have actually finished. The author does an amazing job breaking down what anxiety is and feels like in a really relatable way without being condescending. And she has actual useful advice that she explains in simple terms so that anyone can understand. It’s an amazing book!!
