"A superbly plotted and gripping police procedural that will leave you breathless. McLean has excelled herself with Run” - Tana Collins

RUN THE GAUNTLET
DI Donna Davenport and her team are under pressure.

With the hunt on for the country’s most notorious cop killer, and an ongoing complex international investigation, the murder of a local thug during a football match is the last thing the police need.

But as more incidents overload the police, and fear brings vigilante mobs onto the streets, suspicion grows that the mayhem is being orchestrated.

CUT AND RUN
One man can make it stop. With the city heading towards chaos and disaster Donna prepares to abandon caution and the rules, even if it means she is ostracised by her own team.

I've been looking forward to this book, having re-read the previous two in readiness. It didn't disappoint. Detective Inspector Donna Davenport is back at work after a few months sick leave. the Dundee Police Force is under attack after letting Jonas Evanton escape once again at the end of Shadows. Donna lives in fear of him finding her and feels he is nearby watching her. Natesh is back and makes a great double act with Donna's partner, Libby, as Donna's back up team. The book starts with the murder of local football referee, Archie MacKinnes, at half time in an Arbroath FC match. He is not a popular man, and his wife is relieved at his demise. As Donna's team tackle this crime, she fears it is linked to the Evanton case. As more happens, her instincts tell her even more that this is the case. With no results, and the team discredited and publicly targeted, Donna doesn't know who to trust. Her mental health is on a downward spiral and her boss and colleagues are concerned for her. Donna lives with bipolar disorder and this is part of her character, and treated in a very natural way as part of the story and Donna's life. It is heartening to see a main character manage her condition in such a stressful situation, and recognise when things need to change. The three books; Toxic, Shadows and Run, are closely linked, following on from each other - think Line of Duty - and I found myself holding my breath on more than one occasion. Another cracking read - if you haven't yet read a Jackie McLean novel, you're missing out!
