Like Gravity

Rate this book

A steamy and angsty coming of age stand-alone that will pull at every heart string. Twists and turns that keep you on your toes, and characters who are forced to open up old wounds from their past.

Jasper rolled into my life like a loose wagon wheel-taking out everything in his path just to get to me. It was all for show, until it wasn't. No part of me was prepared to be swept away. After all, gravity is supposed to keep us grounded. He had other plans, and didn't give a damn about the chaos we were about to unleash. They say secrets are like a silent death. Only, I never knew the depth of it until now.

I never saw Blakely coming, but when I did, there was no chance I was letting her get away. She's a walking disaster, always leaving a trail of smoke in her wake. And me? I'm the sorry bastard who kept following her-that is, until she sucked the air right out of my lungs, just to keep her own filled. She's a queen through and through. A spoiled rich girl that reaps no consequences, until she did. I'm that consequence, and I know her dirty little secret.

☆☆☆☆☆I loved it beginning to end and it was exactly what I needed to be able to escape the real world for a few hours and get caught up in their unexpected love story. -Dirty Reads Book Blog

☆☆☆☆☆She definitely keeps the reader on their toes. Such an extraordinary love story. My one an only complaint is it left me wanting more! A highly recommended read. If you like steamy, romantic completely interesting love stories then this book is for you! -Goodreads Reviewer

Bullies, Lies, and Secrets!

I really enjoy bully romance, but it is funny how perception can change based on the particular book you are reading. About a week ago, I read a bully romance book and in my review I said that I was tired of the bully always having to be more than just a bully. I have read more than one book where the bully is a Mafia kingpin, in a cartel, or even some sort of heist crew. I was wishing that these high school kids would have normal family issues and behave more like actual high school kids.

However, when I started this book, I got a bit frustrated because the characters seemed to be acting a bit too immature. Funny, since they are high school kids and kids do act immature. So I realized this was more the kind of book I wanted. As the book progressed the characters got much deeper and the storylines became extremely compelling.

This book was about a girl named Blakely from a wealthy background. Blakely has a ton of issues. She used to be the most popular girl in the school but after getting drunk and passing out at a party, a few of her classmates took some pictures of her and spread rumors about her to the entire school. The girl behind it was Blakely’s rival, a girl named Petra. Now Petra is at the top of the food chain and Blakely has a mask of toughness that she uses to keep people at a distance and make sure she doesn’t get hurt.

Blakely has a difficult home life with two parents who are rarely home and when they are home they ignore her and her younger brother. Her father is an alcoholic and fights with her mother a lot, so their house, though big and beautiful hides a cancer within.

Enter new student Jasper, who’s from the rival school. His father is the new Coach and they moved in with his father’s girlfriend and her son, Knox. Knox is Blakely’s best friend and next door neighbor, so Blakely spends a lot of time at their house. Jasper has his own issues, mainly stemming from the fact that he didn’t want to move away from his football team and friends in his senior year of high school. His dealings with Knox are very acrimonious and though he tries for his father’s sake, he has a quick temper and often lashes out.

The romance between Jasper and Blakely is non-standard since she is trying to get revenge on Petra. Blakely wants to date Levi, the football quarterback and most popular boy in school. I really liked the progression of the romance between Jasper and Blakely and the build up. It was also quite steamy. The storylines all meshed well together and kept me at the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next!

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

Wow! This was a pleasant surprise for me, I’ll be honest I didn’t know what to expect or think when I went into reading this book. I’ve never read Rachels books before and was a little apprehensive as it’s a little different from my usual reads, but boy am I glad I gave it a try! What I absolutely LOVED about it was the story, It had such a compelling story and the characters were really interesting because of the backgrounds they came from. If you read this book for nothing else read it for the characters and story, it’s that good! It had a lot of intense moments that made me go oh my god and hit me hard with the feels, for me it’s 5 stars and I’m really glad I gave it a chance

When Jasper's father moves with his son with to girlfriend's house, his next-door neighbor is elusive high school queen B Blakely who will make his new guy status even harder. They soon form a connection, which morphs from hate to passion to love. Add to the mix that Blakey's best friend is Jasper's stepbrother, Blakely uncaring parents, lots of high school drama, Jasper searching for some answers and you get the storyline for this book.

It many ways this was typical high school romance with some bully trope. But not just between Jasper and Blakey but with everyone. Every character is very unlikeable and unrelatable. I think that is what bothered me the most is the fact that I couldn't connect with any of them, especially our leading protagonist. I would describe them as extremely annoying.
Now, I can't say if that was the author's intention, if so she succeeded.

I liked Knox, the best and he will be having his own book next, sadly I'm not intrigued enough to read it. The writing is good. I have never read this author before. The pace of the story was great. It is a book you can read in one sitting. The perfect read for all those readers who enjoy high school books with steamy parts left in it.

Thank New Adult Book Club for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This book is marketed as being a bully romance, but it’s more enemies to lovers. Jasper and Blakely are incredibly complex characters. I love how Blakely is somewhat of a Queen B at her high school, but she’s not quite so shallow, and she clearly has layers. Jasper is moving to a rival school in the middle of the school year, and while he’s lashing out a little bit, he’s not quite as much of an a$$ as you would expect from the book’s description. Their love story is gradual and authentic. There are a few (somewhat predictable) twists in the plot to keep things interesting. We’re introduced to Talon, Blakely’s brother, who I can see stars in the Redwood High Rebels spin-off series. I can’t wait to read more by this author!

The last thing Jasper thought he'd be doing during the middle of his senior year of high school is moving to a new school, his current school's biggest rival to be exact. One little fight and his dad decided it was time for a change, so they packed their belongings and moved in with his father's new girlfriend and her son. And enrolled him at the ever wonderful Redwood High.

This is not how this school year was supposed to go, he went from being a starting quarterback to being a back-up quarterback for the enemy. There isn't anything that could possibly make this situation better... then he meets his new next door neighbor Blakely. She is gorgeous, feisty, and pushes his buttons, but she draws him in like no other girl ever has. She says doesn't do relationships... but Jasper is determined to convince her otherwise!

Like Gravity is an heart-wrenching tale that will keep your eyes glued to the pages, and your heart in your throat. Every page comes riddled with emotion, drama, tragedy, and angst. These two haven't had it easy, life has dealt them both a devastating blow, and they are just barely getting by. Their demons are just under the surface, barely contained, and always on their minds. When they meet they think they are polar opposites, but little by little they soon learn that they are more alike than they ever thought, it's their painful pasts that bond them, as well as their sizzling chemistry. My heart broke for these two, the lives they lead were not typical of a normal teen, they were dealing with adult like matters at a tender age, and sometimes they handled them poorly. But it also taught them a lot about themselves, and matured them in a way that was admirable. I loved what I found between the pages here, it gave my heartstrings a nice little tug, and kept me completely captivated. Highly recommend!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.

*DNF*

1 Kiss

I hate this. Very much. More than I can ever express. I don’t like DNF’ing a book and I never do it lightly. I also never go into a book thinking I’m not going to love it but honestly (and sadly) I figured out pretty quickly that Like Gravity wasn’t really the book for me. It’s a tough thing to admit and I tried to force it as much as I could but...if I’m forcing it, I’m not enjoying it and I never want that to be my reading experience. Admitting defeat is never easy but it really had to be done in this case.

First issue I had was my absolute lack of a connection with the characters. I am an emotional reader and I need some kind of connection to whose POV I am in. Blakely was honestly annoying from the start - she sounded like a brat and I wanted to give her a fair shot but it was really hard. I had an easier time with Jasper but he didn’t really give me a whole lot to go on. I’m sure both Jasper and Blakely had potential to be great characters but there wasn’t enough that I read that made me want to find out if it ever happened.

On top of the lack of emotional connection, it felt like a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. That in and of itself is kinda frustrating but it was compounded by the way and order in which everything was being told. It felt very disjointed and out of order. It made the flow very choppy. It kind of felt like we were dropped right in the middle of a story that was already going on - like I missed the first few chapters setting everything up. Maybe that was intentional but if that was the point then there needed to be more explanation/development then what was done.

The nail in the coffin for me was when Jasper came out and saw Blakely at Knox’s house and made it out to be like it was the first time he had seen her...when two chapters before that there was a scene where he saw her at the house. It just completely threw me off and I could maybe understand/forgive it if it hadn’t just happened but there was obviously no continuity.

I’m bummed that this one didn’t work out - I was excited about it and the whole Redwood High series. I’m taking complete responsibility for this one not working out...not every book is for every reader and unfortunately Like Gravity wasn’t for me - I hope others enjoy it though.

Like Gravity was my first Rachel Leigh book and I was not disappointed. Jasper and Blakely's story wasn't at all like I was expecting.

Blakley is the spoiled, rich girl who is used to getting what she wants. But things are not always as they appear. Jasper is the bad boy, football star who had to switch schools in the middle of the school year because he got into some trouble. He has a chip on his shoulder and no one knows why.

Jasper moves in with Blakely's best friend Knox. Jasper's dad and Knox's mom are dating. Blakely and Jasper also get assigned at partners for a class project so they are spending a lot of time together. The attraction between the two jumps off the page right from the start, they even see it too. Neither wants a relationship especially with each other. However, a little fun never hurt anyone. Blakely and Jasper are two broken people who find a sense of calmness with each other. Both have terrible things from their past and keep them from truly being happy. Their story is raw and real, and so very messy.

Like Gravity hits on a lot of real, tough issues that people face. These two didn't have typical high school problems. They had issues no one should have to face ever, let alone at the time they did. They are both weighed down by so much sadness and hurt.

When their past come rushing to the present, instead of leaning on each other it tears them apart. Jasper handles everything in a way I expected but was also hoping wouldn't happen. My heart hurt so much for both of them. I wanted to slap Jasper and hug him at the same time. Poor Blakely I just wanted to hold her for everything she had seen, then to have Jasper react the way he did.

I was a little worried about the book when I first started. It took a minute for it to pick up but once it did, it stayed. Leigh hooked me and had me needing more. The plot, and the characters were amazing, and delivered in a way that left me feeling and needing more. I cannot wait to see what Leigh gives us with book two in the Redwood High series.

It's Senior year for Blakely and she has perfected the art of being an ice-cold Queen. Though for her it is a defense mechanism as she has had years of a hard childhood where her parents are hardly home and when they are, anyone rarely interacts with one another. Even Blakely's little brother Talon we read in the book seems to rely heavily on alcohol to get him through day by day. They are both counting down till their graduations as that is when their trust funds get released and they can leave home without having strings tied to their parents. Blakely has only one friend Knox who has been their right through school and if Knox didn't have a girlfriend - you would think that there was an attraction but it seems that this friendship is purely a brother/sister friendship. Enter Jasper - his father has just moved in with his girlfriend who happens to be Knox's mother and now he is living next door to Blakely. He also manages to get under Blakely's skin and shows the readers that under her ice-cold exterior she does have a heart. What will happen though when things start to show promise and then we learn that Jasper's one goal - getting revenge on the person who broke up his family is a lot closer to him than he realizes and that somehow the girl he is starting to develop feelings for is also involved in her way ? Like Gravity by Rachel Leigh was a love/hate novel between Blakely and Jasper and filled to the brim with YA Angst. If you love enemies to lovers and angsty teen dramas then you will find yourself enjoying Like Gravity by Rachel Leigh.

So many secrets in this book but with a delivery that has me giving it five stars. Blakely is a high maintenance Queen B who is just biding her time so she can graduate and receive her trust fund. Jasper is the new guy who has moved in with her best friend Knox due to a relationship between the parents. High school rules here with football games, and wild parties after during a senior year that will change everyone.

What did I like? The realism here was phenomenal... although all the secrets are released there is a HEA that will make you glad you read this. Jasper and Blakely have issues being together but it’s even more depressing when they are apart. Blakely has high walls that have never been breached but Jasper shows his quality is patience. An equal match. The book also ends with a look at Knox’s story which looks to be real interesting, I definitely want more from this series.

Would I recommend or buy? Yes, I really enjoyed the book and the relationship between Jasper and Blakely. The story relates to the constellations Cassiopeia, and the mythology behind it. It made it an interesting story and idea.

Thoughts for the author? Congratulations on your new release! Thanks so much for an ARC, enjoyable book I give five stars. I won a copy from a Facebook giveaway. Can’t wait for Knox’s story.

HEARTWRENCHING, RAW, GRITTY, ANGSTY, SEXY AND AMAZING HEA
WOWZA!!! This book....only one word to describe it "unputdownable"!!! I started it and finished it in one sitting because I couldn't stop reading it! Rachel had me eating these characters up yet not liking them at times too. Jasper and Blakely were absolutely perfect for each in such a moving, touching and somewhat destructive way. Blakely is the Queen B at school however her reign may be about to end and she is having serious issues controlling her rage against her classmates when she feels she's been wronged. Then Jasper, aka The New Kid, rolls into town and totally upends her life. She doesn't do friendships except for her brother and best friend/neighbor Knox. There is an uncontrollable attraction between Blakely and Jasper that seems to grow effortlessly but also with a lot of angst.
Their lives have both been turned upside down from terrible events that happened in the past and little do they know they've been tied together for a lot longer than either one of them realize.
This book has tons of twists and it definitely brings the raw and gritty angst that should always be in an enemies to lovers story. I also adored the ending and HEA these two received because if anyone needed one it was definitely these two.
So if you are looking for a bully/enemies to lovers amazing read make sure to read this!!!

Rachel always gives us intriguing stories, with an interesting plot, twists and turns you’ll never see coming and plenty of steamy moments. Like Gravity was intriguing from the very start and a story I never wanted to leave when it was over.

Blakely is what we normally think of when we think spoiled, rich high society girl but once you start to peel back those layers you start to see there’s way more than what originally meets the eye. Jasper was also completely misunderstood, he had to start and transfer to a brand new high school for his senior year. On the outside he was cruel and standoffish but once he start to soften you’ll fall for him immediately.

Their story may be broken but it’s also incredibly intense. Once they realize that they may have what they’ve always been searching for in each other and in each other they can truly discover who they are and what they want to be! I loved it beginning to end and it was exactly what I needed to be able to escape the real world for a few hours and get caught up in their unexpected love story.

In the beginning Blakely seems like just a spoiled bratty rich kid. Which she kind of is, but her depths go deeper than that. Being mean to others in hopes of making herself feel better, is just her hiding her true self behind the bitchy facade. Jasper is Blakely’s new neighbor and step brother to her best friend Knox. He (Jasper) too carries a chip on his shoulder. Forced to move into his Fathers girlfriends house makes him bitter. Blakely draws his attention right away and they bond over the darkness and hurt that consumes them. Jasper is smart, gorgeous, athletic and super sweet. He makes her feel emotionally exposed. The kind of package no 18 year old girl can resist. Multiple events take place. Fighting between Knox and Jasper; a horrible mother, alcoholic father and a family filled with drama for Blakely. There is pain and love and hate along with a twist just waiting to reveal itself. It was painful feeling the hurt that Jasper felt. I went through every emotion for him. Even while he’s hurting Jasper still acts in the best interest of the women he loves. An emotional high school/teenage love story with a HEA. Rachel did an amazing job. Her best work yet

Like Gravity, the first book in the Redwood High series, was an angsty and heart-wrenchingly raw romance that gripped every inch of my soul that drew me in right from the start. The moment that I dove in, I found myself deeply lost among the pages and wholeheartedly invested in these characters and their complicated journeys.

Blakely Porter and Jasper Scott's story was an enemies-to-lovers romance at its finest and I freaking loved every second of their journey. Their chemistry lit my kindle on FIRE and I felt this aching burn in my chest the entire time I devoured their story. I adored the push and pull approach that the author took and the suspense that she intertwined throughout the pages. There was amazing depth in this coming of age story and I appreciated the growth that these characters experienced throughout. Everything about this story captivated me and there wasn't a single dull moment between these two.

The first book in the Redwood High series was amazing and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the series has to hold...which luckily I am about to find out because I am diving right into the next book, Like You!

Blakely had it all, status, wealth, popularity. However, being the Queen B isn't everything. The family secrets and pain that she hides. Jasper was struggled with his huge change in his new life and home. When they cross paths, secrets, lies, and truths are revealed.

This is actually my first story by Rachel Leigh. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There was a bit of mystery, heartbreak, steam. There was one scene that completely broke my heart. I ended up tearing up. I wasn't sure about Blakely but she eventually grew on me. Jasper, I loved the whole IDGAF attitude. He was a bit of a douche, but I ended up forgiving him. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

I admit that I wasn’t sure about this story but as I read further I really became invested in Jasper and Blakely’s story. Both are how they are based on life and circumstances while at the same time their relationship brings more even more openness and create more issues. The author shows their growth and progress, which makes the story that much more real and even intense at times. It was tough for me to categorize this story but I will say I definitely enjoyed it and would certainly recommend.

Enjoyable

I truly love the story but this book didn’t grab my attention than I thought it would be. The heroine, Blakely, wasn’t truly my cup of tea. Ice-queen fr. the outside and supposedly truly sweet fr. the inside. I just didn’t see a good enough development to see her be more than the ice-queen, the side of goodness. Overall, I just didn’t like her character but Jasper wasn’t too bad. He got a very bad boy persona yet he is honest and raw character for me. He managed to pull you back of liking how the story will come about with Blakely. In any case, this is more the language for a younger crowd. I am quite a lot older and I do read NA books but this book became okay for me. Overall, it was enjoyable and amazing read.

This story about Jasper and Blakely is truly amazing!!! Their lives are full of trauma, tragedy and dysfunction. One is a high-brow/all about money family - the other is loving and mostly functional but 1/2 of them have suffered a great loss. Now that Jasper has moved into the area and right next door to Blakely - they both attend the same school. It’s an intense but incredible journey for them as they discover who they are, who they want to be and who they are to each other. Rachel Leigh does an awesome job of bringing the plot twists & turns to the story that the reader will never see coming. Characters are so interesting and all full of depth. The storyline is spectacular as always with this author. She’s definitely keeps the reader on their toes. Such an extraordinary love story. My one an only complaint is it left me wanting more! A highly recommended read. If you like steamy, romantic completely interesting love stories then this book is for you!

Hot 🔥

I’m not usually a fan of High School stories but Rachel’s books always draw me in! Blakey has issues that no one can truly understand. Her past has left her untrusting and broken. When Jasper moves in next door her whole world changes. Jasper is in search of answers regarding his mother’s death but little does he know that he doesn’t have to go far to find them. The heat between Blakely and Jasper is off the charts and it’s just the right level of angst. Thanks Rachel for another epic read. Can’t wait for Knox’s story.

After the first couple of paragraphs of this book, I was pretty sure I was going to dread having to finish it. I thought it was going to be the same story that seems to be told over and over again. I'm really glad I kept reading because it didn't take long for me to be unable to stop. The best recommendation I can give is that I'm going to Amazon as soon as I post this to buy another book by Rachel Leigh. If it's as good as this one, you should do the same. Happy reading!

Wow! This book was hard to put down. I may or may not have gotten snappy when someone tried to talk to me while I was reading... I went into this book without knowing much about it and it was not what I was expecting (in a good way!).

"I keep my heart tucked away safe and secure, but I do have one. I just don't expose it to the hateful world.

Blakely Porter is alone. It may not look like it, but it feels like it. Her mother and father aren't much in the way of parents and her friends -- aside from Knox, her best friend and boy-next-door -- don't really know her and may not even care... She tries to appear invulnerable to everyone to hide the fact that she is very much capable of feeling. As the book progresses, it's obvious Blakely suffers from some sort of trauma and it eats at her.

"She's a bottled-up mystery, and I want to know everything about her: what makes her heart skip a beat, what makes her smile, cry, laugh, and most importantly, what makes her so damn sad."

Jasper Scott is angry. He is filled with it and it spews out onto his father, his new family, and the teammates he never wanted. But he sees something in Blakely, something a lot like himself. Instead of freezing at her icy exterior, he tries to warm her up. Just as the two get closer, Jasper finally gets the answers he's been seeking and his rage becomes directed at Blakely.

I enjoyed this book and I already want to read the rest in the series. It was very addictive and there was a real heart to the story. There was something sweet about Jasper and Blakely -- despite the fact that neither were really all that sweet themselves. I liked that Jasper kept trying with her. She's not an easy nut to crack and she needed someone who saw the good in her and was determined to make her see it too. These two had some character growth that was good to see. However, these two are loaded with issues and I knew they couldn't be tackled in one book. So, it's up to us to imagine Blakely and Jasper navigating a relationship and their own lives in the future.

I'd like to thank the author for providing me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review and NABC for hosting the review program.

Like Gravity was an intriguing read that drew me into the story. When Jasper and Blakely met, they instantly antagonize each other. They are forced to work together on a school project and realize there is more to each other than what they originally saw.

I will admit that when I started the story I wasn’t sure I was going to like Blakely. She seemed like a vain, selfish girl that took pleasure in the misfortune of others. As we learn about Blakely’s life and she drops her guard, you realize that there is a lot more to her underneath the surface. Once she starts to open up to Jasper, I began to understand her better. While she appeared to have it all on the outside, her home life was terrible and a tragic event that she witnessed had truly scarred her. She grew by the end of the book and she was able to become vulnerable to another person and begin to heal.

Jasper also began as a cruel teenager who hated everyone at the new school he was forced to transfer to during his senior year. However, it soon become apparent that Jasper had a heart underneath his hard exterior and it wasn’t long before he found himself wanting to help Blakely and protect her. When he learns a heartbreaking truth, it was difficult to see him revert to his former behavior even though I knew he was just acting out due to his pain. I was happy when he began to see beyond his anger and to learn to forgive.

I enjoyed Jasper and Blakely’s story although I would have liked to have seen them more after they reconciled. I feel they have more story to be told. However, the epilogue does have me interested to read Knox’s story.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

This was a good read. I think it had the potential to be amazing but it was worth reading once for me. I liked the writing style and the story never had a dull moment. However, it was hard to connect with the main female character in this story. Blakely kept a hard exterior and although there were tender moments with her it just wasn't enough. I needed more! I needed her to let her walls down and show a softer side for longer than a sentence or two. I enjoyed both Knox and Jasper, and their back and forth banter was just as entertaining as it was between Jasper and Blakely. Talon was an okay character but we didn't get much of him in this story. I figured out what happened to Jasper's mom before it was revealed so it wasn't surprising. The ending of the story was okay but I wish it was better. I wanted to end this story with the thought and feeling that I have to have the next story as soon as possible. This high school enemy to lovers romance was funny, steamy, full of drama, jealousy and more. It wasn't a top read for me but I would tell each reader to give it a try and see if this story is for you. I will give other books from this author a try, I enjoy her writing style so I know I will find the book that will be a top read for me.

Blakely showed out as a vain, selfish girl out of the gate, but luckily that surface stuff wasn't the entire truth, as family life played a huge part into all of it, not to mention some situations which changed her. Jasper is the new student who despised everyone at his new school, and frankly, he didn't come off great from the jump either. These two lost souls bond, as both see past the pain of the other. However, some things come out which has Jasper back to his original jerk, which really set me off to be honest, however I won't tell you why, though I do know it was because of the pain he felt, but it didn't hold water for me. This is one of those stories which pulls out all the emotions, and while so many of you will feel the angst levels, my rage definitely covered all the possible eye leaking. This is definitely an intriguing story that kept me invested, and I'm really anxious to see how the next story goes, so hit those one click buttons to experience it for yourselves! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

3 Stars.

Was this cringe worthy at time? Yes.
Did it hit me right in the feels at one point? Yes.
Did I like it? Yes.
Did I love it? No.

Overall, this was a good read. I really loved the references to Greek Mythology, and how Jasper related them to Blakely. It was a new take on the daunting high school task they were faced with.

I really appreciated the redemption of Blakely towards the middle/end of the book and liked how there was more than meets the eye.

As someone who suffers from anxiety, I would have liked to see Blakely’s struggles with her anxiety and need to control everything handled in a different way. I felt like there was such an opportunity to shed awareness to what it’s like trying to be a perfectionist and the mark was just missed for me.

Last but not least, I would have liked to see more relationship development between Jasper and Blakely. I struggled to find myself actually caring about their relationship at points. I didn’t really buy into the moment that they realized they were in love with each other and more could have been done to sell me.
