Kenza is the Brat that tamed the Panty King!
I had a tough time getting into this story at first. The author's trademark quirky writing style was a bit wordy, belaboring the points as if she couldn't decide which clever description worked best so she used them all. The meet-cute and ID reveal scenes spent too much time trying to keep the suspense hanging, almost to the point of being tedious. However, once Cameron and Mackenza finally have all the facts squared away, the story really takes off and more than made up for the slow start. It was engaging and absorbing, and I couldn't put it down.
Right from the start, Kenza tries Cameron's patience at every turn while seeing right through his arrogant attempt to establish his place at the company. She needles past his veneer to his hidden-for-a-reason true self, and despite his best efforts to keep everything superficial he just can't help but reveal all his secrets to her.
Cameron is a man who refuses to be defined by his humble beginnings, which itself was a story that nearly ripped my heart out. Regardless of the challenge, he was driven by a need to prove that he was the only one who could do it. His was a pride that covered an innate need to prove to himself how far he'd come.
Meanwhile, Kenza is trying desperately to hold on to her family's company because running it is the only goal she's ever had in life. There might be a few business concepts she needed to learn from Cameron, but she had a lot to teach him as well.
The most unique attribute of a Sosie Frost book is the witty wordplay and almost over-the-top situational humor. The coffee scene in his office is the hilarity I came for, and the fashion show that crashed the board meeting was absolute comedic brilliance. The humor was laced throughout, but never overshadowed the emotional interplay between the characters.
Both Cameron and Kenza try to keep their wildly out-of-control physical attraction from becoming something serious, leading to one of my all-time favorite book lines:
“If we’re going to lie to ourselves, we might as well do it all night.”
But when the "surprise" comes, Kenza is the only one who didn't see it coming from a mile away. Still, it's more than a plot twist as it forces them both to crack the walls around their hearts, even if just a little.
Once I got to the very satisfying HEA, I was all but cheering this couple from the rooftops. It's a wonderful story, well worth working through the initial verbosity. If you haven't read this author yet, this book is the perfect place to start. If you're familiar with her work, you won't want to miss this outstanding addition to her catalog. I highly recommend it for any fan of rom-coms. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
