Davey’s Rule #91: Daddy never loses faith in his boy.

Bryan Miller is satisfied with his uncomplicated life. He’s a discipline Daddy who’s not in the market for any kind of permanent relationship. And why should he be? Like the waves he surfs in the small beach town he calls home, there’s always another body available to warm his bed when he tires of the current flavor of the week.

Preston Wallace is a snotty rich brat with enough attitude to keep all the Daddies from giving him a chance. He gets it… people are jealous of him for being rich, hot, and fit. It would take a strong Daddy to take him in hand.

A casual conversation on the night of Preston’s twenty-fifth birthday ties these two stubborn men together in a bet right out of the musical My Fair Lady. Can Daddy Bryan turn the obnoxious brat into a dateable boy within a ninety-day timeframe?

Strap in for a roller-coaster of emotions as Bryan takes firm control of a brat who might just need to know someone cares enough to try.

This is the second book in this series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book. Possible trigger for the death a background character.

I thanked him and made my wish as I blew out the candle.
Bring me a Daddy to love me. With my eyes still closed, I crossed my fingers on both hands for extra luck as I sent my wish out into the ether. I wish I may, I wish I might, have this birthday wish tonight.

That scene had my throat clogging up when Preston sat there all alone in that big house on his birthday with even his staff (out of propriety) refusing to sit with him. *sniffling

Daddy Bryan makes a bet with the other daddies (Preston knows and is in on it) to make the brattiest brat at the club into a boy every daddy would want on his arm. So Preston moves into Bryan’s home and his new daddy starts immediately with the disciplinary actions.

Yeah, sure. I'd deliberately misunderstood my chores. But if you asked me, the real crime here was him taking away my beauty supplies. That was just wrong.

Girl, I feel you. That was just harsh! *huff

Bryan really had his work cut out for him with this one. It was actually pretty fun to read.

Still, the second half struggled to hold my interest and I started skimming quite a few times. Then some chapters just ended with no real closure of the scene and the story just moved on and sadly this was also not as sexy as I usually expect these kinds of books to be. And Bryan and Preston had damn good chemistry. Pity for the lost potential here.

So yeah, no. As much as I enjoyed reading this book in general I won’t be coming back for the any of the other ones.

Preston the arse gets his story here and I have to say, he's not the simple bitchy queen he appears on the surface.

So I'll eat my words from my book one review because I did care about Preston and he was perfect for Bryan.

I really loved how Bryan slowly brought out the best in Preston while falling in love himself.

Teared up a bit at one of the things that happens, wasn't expecting that and it made me have a sad.

Overall another really easy read in this series from Susan.

Same as before, i think that these two are one of my favorite couples in this series.

4 stars: August 2022

Didn’t think Preston would redeem himself from book one, but damn I ended up loving him at the end of this book! He had me laughing, cringing and almost crying throughout the book.

These two prickly men were made for each other. Currently I enjoy their relationship more than Travis and Adam. I can’t wait to continue this series!

Preston is looking for the love his parents never showered on him. But he's going about his journey the wrong way. He shows the world around him an intense bratty side but that's not the real him. Bryan is a structured daddy; obey his rules and your satisfaction is guaranteed. Preston has sooo much to learn about being an adult and Bryan is the man for this job. Preston's naivete about real life is really quite cute.
In Preston Bryan sees a challenge. A bet is made; both believe their side will win but can there be 2 winners--not one. In the end even a death assists Preston in his maturing. References to "My Fair Lady" by Davey are hilarious and so apropos. Read on and find out.

The second book in Susan Hawke’s Davey’s Rules, is Rules to Break and it’s a Daddy/bratty-boy story. Narrated by Michael Pauley, this series continues to showcase Daddy/boy relationships.

At first glance Preston is an entitled, rude, self-centered jerk. Twenty-five years old and he has zero friends thanks to his obnoxious attitude, and a giant chip on his shoulder.

Daddy Bryan is a thirty-five year old confirmed bachelor who has just met the boy who is going to change all that.

A goofy (and a bit mean spirited bet) ensures these two have to spend the next three months together, changing Preston into the “ideal boy”… or kill each other trying.

There are several really wonderful moments in Rules to Break. I loved watching Preston interact with the two incredibly special grandfather-figures in his life and seeing how much they impact his attitude. And the second best part is watching how Bryan’s outlook changes throughout the bet. Caring for Preston makes Bryan realize he needs someone to care for in his life. After all, what kind of true Daddy goes from boy to boy and never really connects with any of them?

So suspend belief that any twenty-five year old American has never seen a toaster or a Keurig before, and join me in hoping that most of these ‘not very kind’ boys and daddies meet their match, get their comeuppance, and find their own happily-ever-afters.

And as Davey’s list of rules continues to get longer…, we’ll just have to be patient and wait to see who will be the daddy to comply with all those stipulations!

This was actually better than expected ! I adored the sass of Preston and his vulnerability made me love him more. It was a good reminder than many people hide behind bravado and fluff to avoid showing pain and loneliness.

Preston, dear Preston, the biggest spoiled, snotty brat ever. Lonely, vulnerable and with the rudest mouth you can imagine. So in need of a Daddy but no one dares.
It started with a bet, at the club ‘Daddy’s Lap’ they are all convinced no one can and want to tame Preston, Bryan stands up and tells them he can turn him into a considerate boy in three months.
Bryan is a Daddy and doesn’t want permanent strings. He loves Preston’s rude mouth, he loves the brat breaking all the rules, so many reasons to discipline him.

What follows is one of the best books I read with a brat boy and an almost perfect Daddy.
A very intense rollercoaster!
I read it, with a break for a few hours' sleep, in one sit. A delicious story, at times heartbreaking, at times heartwarming, at times hot af!! I loved both men hard! I laughed and cried with this story. Immensely entertaining, written in a smoothly captivating way with a awesome pace.

This was a grand story, with a few very intense side stories. It had ALL the feelings.

Highly recommended

Oh boy, do I have some thoughts about this one. I have enjoyed many of Hawke's books, but this wasn't for me.

First of all, meeting Preston in book 1 made me weary about reading his book because brats are so-so to me, but he definitely turned that around. Once I got a look inside his head, I understand him better and I just wanna scoop him up and cuddle him to death, the poor guy. He has some amazingly wholesome interactions when he shows his true self. And then to have the guys at the club talk so meanly about him and call it joking?

"There was a lot of joking going on the night we made this bet. But I never would've taken it if I didn't believe that you were a decent person on the inside, Preston."

There was no joking where I'm coming from - even if Preston is rough around the edges and rude sometimes, he in no way deserved the treatment he got.

And then comes in Bryan to "save the day". Man, I did not like him. At no point in the book did I feel like he deserved Preston. I will concede that dicipline daddies are not my favorites, but Bryan kept putting all blame on Preston - even for his own shortcomings. I legit added a new bookshelf here on GR for this book specifically called "made me angry". A daddy worth his salt would be able to see past Preston's rough exterior and see a hurt little boy underneath - if not a first then at least after getting to know him, his parents, and his circumstances. But no. Mr. Jerk-face persisted.

The only reason I kept reading this was because I wanted Preston to have a happy ending - I didn't necessarily like that he got it with Bryan (Mr. Jerk-face), but seeing the world through Preston's eyes, seeing him making new friends and feeding the black hole in his heart that makes him act out, was literally the only reason I kept going and didn't just skip on to the next book.

Okay, first things first…. I was mixed coming into this one because while I did think Brian was just yum in book one, I didn’t want to see a happy ever after for the type of person that Preston was. There’s a difference in being bratty and being downright mean-spirited and he was mean-spirited, so I almost skipped this book on that alone. I’m so glad I didn’t.

As with most bullies, there is a reason that they are the way that they are. In Preston’s case, it was a combination of a couple of things, one, I think because he was never taught any better. Sure, common sense would tell you that being mean to people is wrong, but mostly he was honest, just bluntly so, and two, he never really had anybody to show him any compassion or care. He has his butler and cook that fuss over him a bit, but they’re still just people his parents hired, so they could only do so much. I did love that they looked after him.

Now, when the guys at the club bet with each other that Bryan could (or couldn’t) turn Preston into a boy that a Daddy would want, I thought it was incredibly callous and they were really mean and I didn’t like the way they all treated Preston, even if in some ways he very much deserved it.

Preston broke my heart a good amount in this book. I was surprised because nobody seemed to care about him and those who might’ve, all died… that’s another thing, I ugly cried over both deaths and though I won’t tell you who they were, I feel like I should’ve had some warning here! I got emotionally invested and my heart actually hurts, for Sammy and for Preston…. and I cannot wait to get Jeff’s story, I so hope he has one.

So, while Preston and Bryan try out this 90 day shap up bet, of course they fall for each other. It was cute seeing Preston’s sassiness, I’m glad he didn’t ever lose it… but I also enjoyed watching him grow into a compassionate person that cared about other people. I liked seeing him make friends with Adam and Jeff and I too was proud of him by the end.

There were a couple of times I wanted to crap slap Bryan, especially in the way he treated Preston sometimes, but I guess there was a learning curve with him as well… he was in unchartered territory as well. It was good to see them come together in the end, all happy and in love and together.

So, while I was VERY iffy about this one and almost skipped it right over, I’m so, so glad that I didn’t. It’s such a sweet but heartbreaking story and I truly cannot wait to see who’s next. I’m so glad this Carona thing has gotten me quarantined for the next two weeks because I’m starting the next one right now…. This one has been my favorite so far!

A sassy, sweet and sexy book

This was one great book.

We met both Bryan and Preston in the previous book, and while I knew I would like Bryan, I wasn't so sure about Preston.

And he started out being someone I wasn't sure I liked, but very quickly grew on me as he started showing who he truly was. I really loved that boy, he was very flawed but a diamond nonetheless. And I loved how Daddy Bryan slowly made him shine.

It was the perfect combination of sassy, sweet, sometimes sad and so very sexy.

I really loved the relationship that grows between them and the ending was perfect.

I can't wait for what's next in this men's lives

Damn this book broke my heart! Holy moley. I know Preston came off as a prick most of the time and I get why people didn’t want to be around him at times, but if they just took the time to get under that exterior he put up, they’d see a whole different side to him.
It really made me sad when the Daddies were all making bets about taming Preston in front of him, like he wasn’t there. It’s like they had no consideration for his feelings at all. I get they all thought he could be a prick but still. He still has emotions. And that’s obvious by how he reacts to one of the Daddies. Who to Preston doesn’t deserve that title. But when Bryan decides to take the bet and try to tame Preston, he got to see a side of Preston that really surprised him. Especially when the chips were down for others. He was sassy and bratty and could really through a hell of a tantrum, but Preston was caring, compassionate and so many other things, it actually made Bryan feel guilty for the way he judged him. And made him see Preston in a different light. For three months of the bet, things were up and down. It was bound to happen. You’re going to have disagreements and arguments and people are going to screw up. But when the chips were down, Bryan was the one who did the unthinkable. And now he has to see if Preston will even give him the time of day. And if I were Preston, I’d be upset too.
You know. I really adore Preston. Yes, he can be a bit of a dick but he really has a heart of gold. He just needed someone who could really see him. Someone who paid attention to him. Someone to make him feel like he was important and worth it. NO one else ever has. And that’s obvious with the way they all talk about him as if he’s not there. When Preston had lost two very close friends within weeks of each other, he needed someone even more. But people keep disappointing him. Over and over again. And they wonder why he’s bitchy. Even his own parents could care less. His only friends are his staff. And that hurts. I just wanted someone to see what Preston really was. And if Bryan had any kind of brain in his head, he would see what he has in his hands. Sometimes I think he does and then he lets thoughts rule his brain and he screws it up. It’s a tough one.
But thankfully, sometimes people finally pull their heads out of their asses and see things for what they really are. Including people who never gave him the time of day. They actually reached out to him. And it was a joy to see Preston finally have something he’d never had. I also love the way he never apologized for standing up for his principles. He might be punished, but he took his punishment like a man. But he kept his backbone. And I don’t care what anyone else said or did to him, I was proud of him.

I don't understand why people love this book...

- - - SPOILER ALERT - - -

Early in the book we learn the sub is sheltered and has not don't real life stuff, there is multi parts where the Dom learn this about the sub, we also learn the sub take his earned punishment, eg when he is standing up to the 'bad Dom' in the club..
WHY the freaking fucking has the author so choose to make the Dom total ignorant over for what the the subs anger can cover?
when he was forced to take the bus, i had a problem with that, one the dom ONLY has the sub for a bet. and the parking ticket was BEFORE they started theirs BET! wtf!!
And why is no-one talking about how many time the Submissive is hiding or forced to not say his safe word, (and i don't care who is emotional shaming / manipulate him) He is so hungry for love and friendship, at he is become indifferent to how he just becomes et bet (entertainment) for the other club member..

What did make me very sad about this books was the lack of sympathy for the Submissive only because he had a lot of money, and hiding his hurt behind a mask.

MMy Thoughts and Review:

Gah! Susan knows how to rip out my heart, make me laugh til I pee, **SQUEE out loud like a teenager, and cry silent crocodile tears with happiness.

This book caught me so off guard that I had to put it away, TWICE and go watch some Bianca Del Rio to find my groove again... "NOT TODAY, SATAN! NOT TODAY!" 😂 😂 I must also add, it was one of the most moving books I've read this year. **happy sigh...

While it isn't necessary to read book #1 before this one, you get to know the crowd at "Daddy's Lap," the club where all the characters converge. You understand the dynamics between bratty boy Preston and other club members and why Daddy Bryan decides to take a bet thrown down by fellow Daddies, that he can take the mouthy, pretentious, and disrespectful boy in hand, and turn him into a pliant, submissive, yet still sassy boy any Daddy would be proud to call his own.

So the terms are laid and agreed upon and for three months/ 90 days Preston belongs to Bryan... Let the battle of wills begin!

Preston has never had to do a thing for himself in 25 years and so takes chores and the like that Daddy Bryan leaves for him and becomes a modern day, Amelia Bedelia. After a couple of minor catastrophes however, he decides to "phone a friend" and calls his house keeper. He also goes shopping to add style to his Daddy's digs, almost gets laid out by a miniature Jean Claude Van Damme, murders plants, turns himself into honey dripping table art, has to take a driving class or lose his license, becomes best friends with himself in 60 years, suffers two tragedies, discovers he is more than his bank account, and gets his birthday wish. All this while bits of "My Fair Lady," play throughout the story (which by the way is my fave musical of all time!💖)! "YOU HEARTLESS GUTTER SNIPE!"

**Ahhhh... Just makes my heart smile and stuff. 💗😍💗

I hadn’t read Book one in the series before this one, but I sure as heck sought it out and read it after! This book works fine as a stand alone, I just really enjoyed it!

I really love a fake relationship, or a bet that means our two main characters are ‘forced’ into proximity with one another. These two are a perfect match and Bryan’s discipline and developing love are exactly what Preston desperately needs.

The ‘big, gruff, I’m not looking for anything serious type alpha male’ is such a fun trope when the reader can see exactly what the man actually needs, and is delighted to see him get it!

The writing is easy to engage with, and low on heavy angst, although there is plenty of heartache. I felt so much for poor Preston and his clinical (though spoilt) childhood where the domestic staff really were his only family.

The story is engaging and warm, funny and sexy and so bittersweet at times I loved it and looked out the previous book. There’s a whole host of boys who need a daddy to love them, so I’m hopeful of more to come.

This was a charming book, I’d recommend.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Another great add to the series. Bryan and Preston's are a roller-coaster ride you don't want to get off of. These two start off awkward and weird; and I loved how each personality shine through and we got a new piece with the next chapter. Sexy and full of chemistry as they both discover new things about themselves. Preston is the brat of all brats so I was excited to see what he could become and get to know the person who hide behind the sass. I laughed more then I thought I would at Preston and his thought process on things, and his interaction with other Subs. He really came into his own to open his heart to true friendships and love. Bryan is cocky Dom who doesn't back down from a challenge. Big enough to admit when he is wrong and strong enough to hold Preston together when he needs him. I loved how Bryan and Travis interacted and a brother knows best to make you face things that you really want and stop holding yourself back. These two fix perfectly together and rather its punishing a brat or sweet kisses it works on all fronts. Both learning from the other and themselves to find happiness. This is a emotional read at times and you'll cry for sure with twist and turns you don't see coming. Loved seeing the side characters flow in and out of the story naturally (Davey, Travis/Adam, Raphael/Sammy, Marcus, Jeff and Bronson). There was so much that was going on I don't want to say too much because I think it would be a spoiler; just know this hits all the right buttons! Can't wait for the next. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.

3.5 stars for Daddy Bryan and Preston the Brat

I enjoyed this one more than the first in the series, however, I have very little patience for the "poor little rich boy" cliche that Preston embodied. I did however warm to him during the cause of the story and I liked Daddy Bryan, even if I thought his reasons for commitment issues were flimsy at best and made no sense what so ever: he didn't want to be his mother, so he acted exactly like her? weird and not logical at all...

It did really put me in the mood to rewatch My Fair Lady though, so there's that...

The writing is engaging and I finished this one in two sittings, so that was great, especially as I have been having a lot of trouble committing to books in the last couple of weeks. I had hoped this would be Davey's story - but I guess he is going to have to wait until the end, so he can continue expanding his set of rules based on each relationship. Since he is going on a date with Marcus, I guess his story will be next - with Jess as his partner I'm guessing - I might skip that one, as I am not too keen on age play and littles.

Trigger warning for side character deaths in this one, btw.

(writing this so I can remember why I didn't like it not to persuade anyone to read or not read it, I just have trouble remembering all the details)

👉I'm not a fan of bully romance. There's a fine line between humiliation & bully... This was firmly on the bully side. I hated how mean all the daddies were to Preston. I felt like really bad for him.

👉I didn't love the premise of their relationship, how it was a bet to "fix" Preston. The poor guy.

👉 Hated the weird punishment in front of actual children. Super weird.

👉 Above all, I don't even think they liked each other. They had 0 connection/chemistry. And Bryan had no personality, like at all. The fun stuff isn't even fun when the characters don't even care about (or hate in an enemies-to-lovers situation) each other.

Cinnamon!

This is an awesome book. You may cry multiple times. (Don't worry, there's a happily ever after.)
Two men so afraid to be vulnerable.

One acts like a brat to push everyone away. Preston figures if he rejects everyone first, they can't reject him.

One won't cuddle his partners, share his bed, or create intimacy in his relationships. If he doesn't make promises, Bryan won't end up with a string of failed relationships like his mother.

This is such a ride. H/c, anger, and so much loneliness. A boy who has no idea how to function without servants. I highly recommend this book.

Seeing Preston put in his place was amazing. The premise of how he finds his Daddy is REALLY the only way he could be "broken" from his diva ways.

As the series is known for, the comedic moments are seriously laugh out loud moments and you can't wait to see where it is going from there. This book in particular though will have you in tears...especially if you read book 1 as one of the secondary characters dies.

Sassy brat and his Daddy 💕💕

Another great addition to the series. Preston is known for being a mean brat and Daddy Bryan makes a bet he can change him...queue in My Fair Lady. But Daddy Bryan realizes there's a reason for Preston's mean behavior and slowly starts uncovering his golden heart. Their journey is full of love, laughter, hurt, and sexiness. A Daddy who learns to love a bratty, sassy boy. A Boy who realizes he can be his true self and be loved.

Step up the heat and kink! As sweet as the first book was, this one went all bratty and kink. Preston a spoiled bratty boy becomes the target of a Eliza Doolittle (boy-do-over) by Daddy Bryan. Preston’s snark, sass and wild antics brought tears of laughter. What a hoot! Daddy Bryan has his hands full, in more ways than one. Loved it!

Very fun, with both laughter and a few tears. Preston may have been horrid in the first book, but my heart just aches for him at the beginning of this one. Poor baby! I loved some of the punishments that Bryan came up with for him, especially cleaning. I hope she writes more than just three in this series -- I'd like some of the other boys to have their HEA Daddy moments, too!

I hate My Fair Lady (because it's a horribly misogynistic piece of crap musical) so I found the beginning of this book to be excruciating. I liked the first one quite a bit, so I pushed through, but bullying is never cool. If you can push through it, you'll probably like it, too.
