Bitter Prophecy A Novelette by S.Tilghman Hawthorne
A Tale of Prophecy, Magic and Betrayal. The long awaited Child of Prophecy has been born, but is the prophecy true? Has she come to save the world? Or tear it apart!? Can YOU discern the truth?
Gef can never repay the Brotherhood enough for the thieving sins of his past. He finds himself beholden once more. Paid a large sum of getlaks in advance, he must kidnap Merrith, the child who will carry out the Prophecy of Silar if she is not sacrificed.
This short read is a well-developed fantasy which delves below the surface of obligation, temptation, betrayal—and a life-altering decision to be made, fraught with danger and sacrifice.
‘Bitter Prophecy’ is a short story full of mystery and adventure. It explores themes of good and evil, and of the ways in which temptation and obligation influence a person’s actions.
The story is well written, with an easy flow that makes it a very comfortable read. There are some really good moments of tension, and a couple of great twists that keep the reader engaged right to the end.
It’s a very enjoyable short read that can be finished in about half an hour, so it fits well into a lunch break or at the end of a busy day.
I loved this book, Bitter Prophecy. The struggle with hierarchy and the battle for survival speaks to us all. The characters are complex and fully developed and I fell right into their story and struggles. The prophet is a dear and I need the next book.
Bitter Prophecy by Susan Hawthorne was a short, sweet, and delightful read. I read the book in a few minutes in one sitting. I loved it. I will be reading more by this Author.
All the excitement of a full-length fantasy adventure can be found between the pages of S. Tilghman Hawthorne’s short story “Bitter Prophecy” when a former thief is dispatched on a kidnapping mission to abduct a prophetic child who threatens the continued existence of the ruling Priesthood.
Hawthorne amps up her character backgrounds with plenty of dialogue discussing past situations and sins while her plot line expands on an exciting escape from the child’s home, to a traitorous ploy at sea, to the stunning reveal of the young girl’s hidden powers, to a tiny miracle that changes the entire direction of the story.
There is some violence in this story, but no more than exists in other traditional childhood tales, so I would recommend this read for youngsters age 8 and up. It is a quick read with a powerful lesson—That one should follow that little voice inside you... no matter what.
I just don't think this is long enough to be considered a book. It would make a great one, but there isn't enough development and the plot moves way too fast.
This was good, but NOT a book. Short story with a cliffhanger ending. I would give it more stars if I had realized it nowhere close to being an actual book.
An enjoyable novelette telling the travel tale of Gef as he undertakes the mission to find and return Merrith, the Child to Prophecy, to the brotherhood to save the village. This is a story of betrayal and hope that is full of wonderful imagery. I would think this would be an enjoyable YA reading selection.
The Bitter Prophecy is a well written novelette that is easy to read. The antagonist is believable and is as much the main character as the protagonist. The revealing of the girl’s powers is done well and shows how the author can development of the character. My gripe is that the story ended way too soon. This should be expanded into a novel.
