Twelve lives were set free but only one will enter.
Stories of the wealthy and magnanimous Rochester Alliance have carried Maddy thousands of miles to reach its gates while hoping it might be the one place that can keep her ghosts out. Except what if the fate she thought long left behind is simply biding its time?
The Alliance may boast technological feats and prestige, but it isn’t this gilded world that saves her when Maddy stumbles across the border as a refugee on the run. Taken under the wing of notorious thieves, the gritty urban underground becomes both shield and sword when her life is suddenly ripped from the shadows one Christmas Eve that brings a heist, a diplomat, and a secret threatening to drag her back to the one place she won’t survive. Little does she know that soon a ghost will slip through with salvation in one hand and strings in the other set on collecting an old debt that could change Maddy’s world forever.
If you give a rat a cookie, will it still eye your flesh?
If you enjoy adventures with an unusual character, you will enjoy Vicinus by Talis Jones. Maddy, the main character, is both delightful and dangerous. Delightful because she is different. She likes to roller skate. She has a warm heart amongst a gang of cool and calculating high end thieves. She doesn’t like conforming to someone else’s idea of who she should be. She listens to music no one else likes. Initially, she leads a group of children across the Southern Coalition toward the technically advanced Rochester Alliance, hoping to find refuge there. The nation where she has sought refuge is full of sharp contrasts. It seems rich but is in reality poor. Poor in real things, but rich in imitations. Poor in genuine sentiments, but rich in deceit. Big on show, weak on content. Wanting to appear good, but only faking it. A false reality portrayed by imposters. Maddy is dangerous as a partner in a violent gang. She can hold her own in a fight. She fights furiously, even if the underdog. She avoids capture in the Southern Coalition by coolly using an intended booby trap to eliminate her would-be captors. The characters seem very real. They remind me of some real people that I have known, though somewhat distorted like a caricature. The places described in the book stick out in my mind as though I had really travelled through them. Mysterious, scary, fun, but with an undercurrent of evil, I give Vicinus five stars.
This was my favorite story of the entire series so far! I love the main character so so much! She wasn’t like some of the more intense main characters she was one that I relate to in a lot of ways and so it was super fun for me to see her in this world! This is one of the books that I wish I could read for the first time all over again!
VICINUS, the third book in the Walking Shadows saga, dives into the wealthy Rochester Alliance that boasts technological feats and prestige, but when Maddy stumbles across its border as a refugee it isn't the gilded world that welcomes her but the gritty urban underground. Befriending thieves, hackers, and diplomats, the world best ready itself for her rebellion amongst the comfortably confused.
4.3 stars Underrated, not for everyone, but hey I'm super into this series and wish more readers would join my growing obsession lol. Also, Arcas has been added to my list of cinnamon rolls in this series. Hurt him and die. :P
This book was not what I expected (do I even know what I expected? lol) but I'm not mad at that at all. I was prepared to meet new characters since each book features a different MC and I knew it would take place somewhere different based on the blurb and yet it definitely stands out as the first major shift in the series. While before this series featured a strong Wild West theme, in this book we dive more into the urban gritty sci-fi world behind it all. Definitely different from the others but I enjoyed it just as much and am genuinely intrigued to see what will happen in the next book - who we'll meet and where we'll go. These books tend to have a quick pace that some people might not like but I personally really appreciate because it hooks and keeps my attention from start to finish. Vicinus is a dark yet festive twist in the ever-evolving Walking Shadows series and a must for dystopian fiction fans everywhere.
P.S. Compared to the first two books, this book's ending is a bit more open/unresolved (not quite a cliffhanger but you're definitely left more curious than with the others) which I think is intentional and has me crazy curious about what we'll find out next. Things are definitely getting more and more interconnected with each book in this series!
