"Reavis Z. Wortham is the real thing: a literary voice that's delivered with a warm and knowing Texas twang."
--C.J. Box

Border patrol agents are being ambushed along the Big Bend region of West Texas, a notorious drug corridor running east and west across the Lone Star State. They're not the only targets. A film production depicting human trafficking in the area has been attacked by a brutal drug cartel.

Into this lawless frontier steps Texas Ranger Sonny Hawke, ready and willing to dispense his own brand of justice. It's an all-out war with the thinnest line separating the good from the bad. Sonny knows the only way out is to aim straight and stand your ground . . .

"There's a term we use in the west, the genuine article, and those words fit Reavis Z. Wortham to a Texas T."
--Craig Johnson

"A masterful and entertaining storyteller."

Reavis Z. Wortham retired in 2011 and now works harder than before as the author of the critically acclaimed Red River historical mystery series. Kirkus Reviews listed his first novel, The Rock Hole, as one of their Top 12 Mysteries of 2011. True West Magazine included Dark Places as one of 2015’s Top 12 Modern Westerns. The Providence Journal writes, “This year's Unraveled is a hidden gem of a book that reads like Craig Johnson's Longmire on steroids.” Wortham’s new high octane contemporary thriller from Kensington Publishing, Hawke's Prey, featuring Texas Ranger Sonny Hawke was released in June, 2017.

Sonny Hawke is on the case when a female Cartel leader starts to order killings in Texas. Hawke goes South of the Border to shut her down, and we get a good old fashioned Mexican Adventure style neo-western.

I don't know if this will be the final book in the series or not.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley to read and review.

HAWKE’S FURY is the 4th book in the “Sonny Hawke Thriller” series based on a legendary border patrol agent in Texas who doesn’t seem to be able to avoid finding himself in dangerous situations, although it’s usually caused by his refusal to shy away from the perils that come his way & unfortunately has also resulted in danger to his loved ones and associates.

Sonny is on a movie set during an action set when suddenly real gunfire takes over where blanks had been used for the scene being filmed, and after the violent act takes place Sonny is assigned to an investigation that takes him south of the border to find out who is responsible, as evidence early on in the investigation reveals that this could be a result of a drug cartel’s involvement, but leaves the question of who initiated the violent action and why.

Several things take place where jurisdiction is a concern, and Sonny has to make some hard decisions about how far he’s willing to go in terms of pushing the envelope to be successful in capturing the responsible party, if he’s capable of doing so without falling short of the task as a result of capture by either the cartel or crooked law enforcement and military in the cartel’s pocket.

Can Sonny somehow safely return to the States with the responsible party, or has he finally put himself in a situation that he’s unable to get out of?

Reavis Z. Wortham has once again written a fine novel in this series that keeps interest up as a result of the action that remains fairly consistent in this one; yet never comes off feeling forced or contrived as is common in other action based novels.

Recommended to fans of border novels with a heavy dose of action and violence.

4 stars.

I have had the pleasure of reading Hawke's Fury by Reavis Z. Wortham. It's the latest book in the series about Sonny Hawke Texas Ranger. In my mind it was the best so far. This one involves corrupt lawmen, drug and people trafficking and justice according to Sonny Hawke. I love all the works by this author and I strongly recommend everyone to try him out. Thanks to Netgalley, Kensington books and Pinnacle for letting me read this.

Sonny & the Devil Woman

Sonny faces down a Mexican cartel known to be especially brutal toward both the lawmen & anyone in the cartel who dared to cross them. The Devil Woman has climbed to the top of one of the most successful & vicious cartels. Ranger Hawke is out of his jurisdiction in Mexico but decides to, on his own, kidnap the Devil Woman & take her back to the US. She cards up her sleeve, or specifically under her boob, that ultimately does her no good. An undercover agent is by her side in the final standoff & Hawke has a moment of concern as to which side he is on. Hawke's Fury is fast-paced, full of suspense, and littered with bodies, but two little old ladies from Del Rio are definitely fiesty survivors. This is the final Sonny Hawke book, and I will miss him.

A fun ride, but suspension of disbelief is occasionally difficult.

The crusade against a huge drug cartel by the protagonist and his close associates pushes against the bounds of rationality. Also, there is off-screen action that is alluded to but the results of which are never really seen.

This book is about action, not really character, and Wortham is at his best when concentrating on character. It's not bad, but it's not really what I was hoping for.

Wortham is a really great writer, I have read a great many of his books starting with the Red River series. I have greatly enjoyed these and the Sonny Hawke series is stellar.
I wish other writers could research their work as well as Wortham, particularly the Texas Rangers and the culture of south Texas and Mexico.
I just just read another series by a FAMOUS author about Texas Rangers and it was a waste of my reading time. So, Reavis, I am going to buy more of your books. You are a writing genius.

Anyone looking to expand their world of westerns, needs to grab on to this book. The West is alive and well in the hands of this author. Bad guys beware, and stay out of Texas. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Adrenaline Junkies delight. Plus who doesn't love an evil woman? So evil she makes Cruella de vil look like lamb chop.

Pick this one if you are looking for a plot driven page turner where the good guy rights wrongs and stops crimes. Sonny Hawke is a Texas Ranger and he's quite the character. Don't worry if you haven't read the earlier books- this is fine as a standalone because Wortham gives you the info you need on the rapid ride that is this tale of a cartel, human trafficking, and frontier justice. Gun fire on a movie set leads to the unraveling of corruption. There are bad guys, there's action, there's all sorts of stuff- it would be a good movie. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Would be perfect for travel if we were doing that but it's also fine as an armchair escapist read.

Another really great hard core Texas Ranger book by Reavis Z Wortham. In this the fourth book in the Sonny Hawke series, Sonny is called in to look into the attack of a film crew who were filming about human trafficking. Believing the cartel is behind the brutal attack he dishes out his own kind of revenge as he goes after them. It is a sit by yourself and leave me alone kind of book you really don't want any interruptions while reading. Kept me going until I finished it to see what would happen. Great Characters and storyline that is believable. Looking to read more from this author.

Pretty ok. Enjoyed the dialogue, story telling and the setting. First time in the Sonny Hawke universe so I had no expectations. I was a bit worried that it would go deep into MAGA country and propaganda, but it skirted around the edges, although a couple of the characters were bombastic stereotypes.

The bad guys were bad; drug dealing, cartel leading, murdering, thieving rattlesnakes. The good guys were good, honest, God-fearing, patriots.

So maybe it deserves a 3.

Not sure.

Planning to read others in the series.

Following a massacre on a movie set and the murder of a border agent, Sonny Hawke heads south to find the woman responsible for these and other deaths. Tacking down a powerful cartel leader in rural Coahilla leads to a plot with more twists and turns than a sidewinder--and the Devil Woman is even more deadly.

Pretty good, though the author does get confused with details at certain points that are extremely glaring. For instance, an gun enthusiast will cringe when he states 5.56 rounds came out of an AK-47. Another time he killed the same character twice in a gunfight when there should’ve been another character who also dies.

This is my second by this author and in this series. It's just as good as the first one. The twists and turns and at times, not knowing who's the good guy(s) and the bad guys(s), make this a very well done story. Enough details to get the "feel" for the location(s), but not so much as to bog the reader down with the unnecessary.
Excellent.
