He received his PhD from London University in 1970 for his work 'Iswar Gupter Jeebon o Kabita' (ঈশ্বরগুপ্তের জীবন ও কবিতা).
Azad was born in Dhaka. He was a professor of Bangla literature. Also he was a first secretary of Bangladesh High Commission in Moskow.
He was honored with Bangla Academy Award (1965), UNESCO Award (1965), National Film Award (1977) and Ekushey Padak (1986).
