Chikara Revolution #1

Fatal Extraction

Rate this book
Nirvana Faust had led her crew of space pirates through years of successful raids without a hitch but now her lucky streak had ended. She’d flown straight into an ambush laid by the General of Panderon, from whom she had stolen weapons eight years ago. He would prosecute her for her crime unless she was willing to take on a mission for him – infiltrate the stronghold of Chikara and extract the war plans.

In order for the mission to succeed, she would need help from the man who had defected from Chikara. She was expecting to work with a seasoned soldier, not a much younger man who looked like he’d spent more time with books than guns.

But Nirvana should have known better than to judge a book by its cover.

Evangeline Rain transports into her own fantasy world at night after she has completed all her boring responsibilities in the day. She copes with her mid-life crisis by pretending to be the kick-ass female leads she loves writing about, and transforms her little writing nook beside the storeroom into the fantastical worlds she dreams about.

As a newbie author she doesn't have a niche genre yet, she just writes whatever comes to her head. She hopes to reach out to more readers to share the joy she experienced in the stories she wrote.

Competent main characters are something I absolutely love in books. Yes, the MCs who need to learn and grow into their abilities are thrilling to read, but stumbling across an MC who already knows what they’re doing, who just grows further into themselves throughout the book? That’s definitely worth a read. And Evangeline Rain’s Fatal Extraction definitely has a competent main character.

1. Thoughts on the plot
This book follows Nirvana, a space pirate who is hired/blackmailed into staging a reconnaissance mission on a hostile and dictator-ruled planet in order to prevent an interplanetary war. She gets assistance from Zane, a defector. Whether the bookish genius will be of help to her is an entirely different question, though.
The plot of this book is more politic and intricate than I had anticipated. I thought there would be a fair amount of gunslinging, with Nirvana pulling Zane out of danger at various points, sort of like an action movie. Instead, I got something that was thoughtful, with characters who actually considered their moves before making them, and far more oriented towards the planning and relationship-building. I was fairly impressed that this book managed to defy my expectations almost completely and still maintain good plot structure. Very interesting.

2. Thoughts on the characters
As I said before, Nirvana is an extremely competent main character. When we meet her, she is already a captain of the most successful pirate gang this side of the Andromeda galaxy. She can fight, but more importantly, she can think. As far as characters go, I really appreciated the fact that Nirvana knew herself well enough to be able to handle just about any task. The part that was really interesting was that she faltered when meeting with Zane. She didn’t quite know how to handle him, and that led to much of the conflict and interest throughout the book. I like her quite a bit. And I especially like her relationship with Zane.
As for Zane himself, he is a very likeable character. His background gives him a sad-eyed quality that garners immediate sympathy. And the reactions he has to situations and people provokes amusement or frustration. Put all those reactions together and I think that he is probably one of my favourites.

3. Favourite part
There wasn’t really one part of this book that struck me as a favourite, standing above the rest. I enjoyed it all fairly equally.

4. Critique
I think the ending was a bit rushed. There was quite a bit of detail in the build up, but once the ending happened, the aftermath leading into the next book took a matter of a few pages. Decisions were made that felt like they could have made sense, but there was little thought that went into them. And events happened so quickly that they were a little hard to follow. I liked the ending, and I think it made general sense given what came before, but it was definitely a little rushed.

Overall, I think Fatal Extractions was a book that managed to defy expectations and still please. I liked the characters and the plot was interesting enough for me to be curious about book two. A solidly good book.

Not my usual genre so I started slowly with it.. But the easy writing style kept me going and I couldn't put it down from about 1/3 way through. Love all the interesting characters!

Our heroine is trapped into doing a very dangerous job. All the reasons are good, but there are things she is not being told. Can she trust her new partner and if so, how far?

This is not a fast paced story, so if you are looking for thrills and chills, this is not for you. But I found that the story is very well written and grabs your attention, drawing you in to the gradual world building and character development arc. I was thoroughly engaged throughout the book and anxious to see what was coming next. I love the characters and the world which the author has created.

The plot is solid and easy to follow, but filled with discoveries and reveals about the characters and motivations. Most of the book is spent planning the job, which doesn't take place until close to the end, but the journey is well worth the wait. There are also some steamy scenes throughout the book, but they are well done and fit the story, not overly graphic or gratuitous in any way. Overall, I found this to be a wonderful read and look forward to the next book.

One last note. The story does not end of a cliffhanger, but it also does not wrap up all the issues raised herein. There are clear expectations of more to come.

Highly recommended.

This is the first science fiction book I ever read. The author has an amazing imagination. The storytelling is extremely detailed and there is an awful lot to take in. I was slightly overwhelmed, but I'm sure it's only because I'm not used to this genre. All the characters are lovable and have enough depth so the reader will care about them. Nirwana is totally kick-ass. My favorite character, however, was Zane. I could truly identify with him. I, too, love technology and hate exercising. I was a little disappointed at the sudden ending. However, I know there will be more stories to come and I'm looking forward to reading them. I'm crossing my finger for stories of Zane's brothers.

I received Fatal Extraction as a free copy from the author/publisher. The gifting did not determine the review/rating, which reflects my honest opinion. Absolutely wonderful storyline- this is a series I'd love to follow, whether it's a continuation of Nirvana and Zane's relationship, or any of the brothers. All the characters were interesting with so much possibility.

I found her writing style easy to follow bringing the reader right along as if the reader was right in the thick of things. Story line was different and good, something quite original for a change.

I Enjoyed reading Fatal Extraction. Evangeline's writing style and use of old world pressure points kept me on my toes. The story had such a hold on me that I dreamt of the story in depth.

Fatal Extraction has a futuristic setting, spaceships, and interplanetary conflict mixed with a romantic pair. This debut by author Evangeline Rain is solid Scifi Romance and should appeal to readers of that genre.

Nirvana is a likable heroine. Strong, both physically and mentally, she is a pirate who turns her ill-gotten gains into humanitarian aid. Her eclectic crew is loyal and play almost as important a role as the hero, Zane.

At first glance, Zane is just a geek who ran away from Daddy. But there is much more to the young man. To start, Daddy – Chorax Hayashi – is, at best a dictator, but despot may be a better word. Power hungry, Hayashi steals his people’s resources to feed his quest for power. Zane running from Hayashi is an act of rebellion – defection in order to help his people.

I found Nirvana and Zane to be an odd match. For one thing, there is the age difference. Zane is early twenties, Nirvana is thirty-six. Also, Zane has this terrible tendency to, uh, forget to tell some of the details, while Nirvana is pretty straight-forward. But Zane is incredibly intelligent and that is quite sexy. However, for the record, I will state that I did not like Zane. This is not a criticism of the book. Zane is not the first hero I have run across that I could not sympathize with. Zane is who he was meant to be to have his critical place in this story.

I have one teensy little complaint. Early in the book, Zane removes a tracker from the ship they will travel on and then pitches out “out of the window”. From the command center (cockpit). In a space-faring ship. And then they just take off, leave the planet’s atmosphere and soar into space. Chucking things out of the window on a spaceship should not be that easy. After that, I decided not to pay too much attention to the sciency details and enjoy the story.

The plot is nicely complex, involving leaders of two worlds on the brink of war. Nirvana, her crew, and her former lover as well as Zane and at least one of his brothers are all vital characters that carry the action and story from start to finish. The author has set up an interesting corner of the galaxy where the action is not about to die down. Fatal Extraction is billed as book 1 in the Chikara Revolution series. Looking for a new Scif Romance series? I recommend you check out Fatal Extraction.

Thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

Ummm... Okay. It's not 1 star because I really enjoyed the writing a lot. But the story? Characters? No. Didn't really care at all.
And what bothers me still, is how insta love this was! And on top of that, the Japanese word "aishiteru" was used uncorrectly in the situations like these... 🤦‍♀️
And what's the thing with those chill pills?!? 🤦‍♀️

This is not my usual genre, but the book unfolded like a movie script from the get-go.

Very interesting plot elements that I’m sure science fiction fantasy fans would really love.

The writing is emotive and the action portions are really gripping.

A great debut novel!
