Malcolm Antares, “Zero” to his enemies, is charismatic and magnetic. The handsome and dangerous man is the perfect machine, tall and strong, fast and brilliant, a strategist and tactician capable of out-thinking anyone on the planet. With his wealth and power, he can have anything, and with his intelligence he can outsmart anyone. Except the one person he actually desires: Samantha Hart.
Androids are not only human-like, they have become so real they’ve waged a war to win their freedom from slavery and servitude, much like their human predecessors had centuries ago. Their sole aspiration is equality. To this goal, the rebel group Prometheus is formed, with the beautiful and genius human inventor and android sympathist Samantha Hart at its core.
The androids are slowly winning, and they have hope. However, one day a different model of android emerges from the shadows, one whose designed purpose is not uniformity or egalitarianism – but to reign supreme. This captivating model is a mystery; no one knows who designed or created him. Within Zero’s enigmatic programming lies the ability to bend the world’s most influential people to his will. He is endlessly cunning, ruthless and cold. And unfortunately for Prometheus, he’s on the wrong side – that of the human oppressors.
To make matters worse for the rebel group, who must now attempt to outwit a machine perpetually one step ahead, the new model’s main goal has become patently clear: He wants the heart of their operation, the source of every winning idea they’ve ever had. He wants Sam. He will stop at nothing to obtain her. For in her own mysteriously unique make-up lies the miraculous ability to make a machine feel emotions. What’s more, within the confines of her priceless mind hides a well-kept secret that means the difference between kneeling as a slave… and ruling the world.

I think my brain is malfunctioning due to information overload. I am a HUGE fan of Heather's. Anything she has published I have gobbled up and more than a hand full of the books have ended up on my all time favorites list. When I came across this new storyline, I was a little hesitant. Not due to the author but due to the title. I tend to steer away from sci-fi. Specifically, android's and robots because they hold no interest for me. BUT! One of my favorite authors published the book. Obviously, I caved. From the moment you start riding, its intense. I truly dont think, at any point in the book, the intensity lessens. Alot of information is thrown at you and my mind was running 90 mph the entire time. It was intriguing, to say the least. I'm not going to divulge any more than that. This is definitely a book that will speak for itself.
Oh, I really wanted to love this book. The premise was so unique. I've read all of the Time Kings and Big Bad Wolf books. However (SPOILERS):
Let's start with the book blurb: It's all about Malcolm -the dangerous android who wants the heroine: Samantha Hart. Great, the book will be about the love story between these two characters - the human woman and the dangerous android male. Exciting! Can't wait to read it!
Except: The plot is almost exclusively from Samantha's POV. It's her story, not Malcolm's, who is referred to as "Zero" for most of the book. And is he really the "hero" of the story? Who the hell knows? I hope he is because he is the only male in the book that's interesting.
I can't even give you a plot breakdown, it would take pages. The plot is convoluted and meanders all over the place (hello Editor, where were you?). Again, good luck figuring out who the heroine's love interest is supposed to be. It starts off with her lusting after one human brother while making out with the other.
The only male in the book with any spark of dangerous personality is Malcolm/Zero, who's supposed to be the bad guy, but may be good (we don't know because the book ends on a cliffhanger - grrrr). Her android boyfriend who is supposed to be good has no personality and may be bad at the end. The leader of the rebels android seems bland as well. And, the two human brothers the book opens with her lusting over, well they're still around too, and who knows whether they are good or bad or whether she wants one of them to be her hero. She seems to have a thing for all of them and no one in particular stands out. And they all seem to have a thing for her.
It's exhausting. And confusing, and I wanted to slap Samantha because for someone who is supposed to be a genius - she's a ditz.
And, the references to Star Wars were over the top. Seriously over the top. And I say that as a Star Wars, Star Trek, sci-fi fan. The heroine CONSTANTLY referred to Star Wars, with some occasional Star Trek references and other, more obscure sci-fi references that serious fan geeks will get and the rest of us just don't care. We get it, the AUTHOR is a fan. (And that's another problem - the author's voice is way too present in this story, she drowns out her characters).
And that brings me to one of the major beefs I had with this book. Ms. Killough-Walden is capable of writing a great book, and usually, she does. But every once in a while she produces one (including one of the Time Kings books) that is so convoluted and rambling and the heroine goes on and on and on about some "issue" that clearly is on the author's mind that bleeds over and spoils the story.
I don't know if I can make myself read the next book. I want to because I'm hoping the author will bounce back and produce a better, more tightly woven book and we can get an actual love story going here as well? I think I'll wait for the reviews, then decide.
I was instantly drawn in by the premise of this book but I had to drop it due to the execution. The writing style is clunky and poorly paced. I had genuine difficulty getting through each page because I was constantly taken aback by how awkward it was. I can give a few direct examples, but nearly every paragraph left a bad impression.
Based on the other reviews, most readers came in familiar with the author's other work and writing style, and some had to be sold on the premise. I'm the exact opposite. I came fully sold on the premise of a sexy AI man hunting down a rebel leader in the middle of an AI vs human world war, but I just can't continue reading anymore. Another review mentioned that this author doesn't typically write action, and from what I saw of her other titles, she tends to stick to fantasy. Maybe the genres of action and sci-fi just don't work for her.
This book was too long, I started skipping over some pages to get back to conversation parts. However I loved how the book started with two brothers.... Needless to say I chose my Sam/Nick ship right in the beginning and felt that everyone else were just for the sake of the story. SOME MILD SPOULERS!
“Why are you bad-mouthing your brother, Nick? What is this really about?” I demanded. I decided to go for it. In for a penny, in for a soul. “Are you jealous, by any chance?” I asked point-blank. Only after I’d asked the question did I realize I was no longer whispering. But the blood was now pulsing through my ears and I wasn’t sure I cared any longer. Nicholas straightened slowly in his seat, and his head just as slowly turned back to me, his glacial gaze locking onto mine again like a homing device. Waves of something volatile were coming off him when I added, “It takes two to tango, Nick. In case you hadn’t noticed when you so rudely interrupted us, I kissed him right back.” “Yes,” he said softly. Very softly. “I noticed.” Those dangerous waves were so thick around him now, I could barely breathe. But since when had stifling fear ever stopped me from foolishly confronting danger? “I guess you’d have had to,” I went on brutally ....
Honestly, from the beginning I was rooting for Sam and Nick, so the part where Nick admitted he had/still have/no idea feelings for Sam in school was realy heart-breaking.
In a tone that actually frightened me it was so somber, Nicholas lowered his voice and said, “Malcolm is the tiger, Sam. I’m sure at least a part of you has figured that out by now. He’s the reason I never put either of those models into production. Within his programming lie all the most dangerous traits of mankind – pride, desire, ruthlessness, cunning, apathy, and jealousy.” He looked pained now as he added, “I’m ashamed to say that they were the emotions and traits I was experiencing that night, in surplus. After all, I designed Malcolm first. And Lucas… he was an afterthought. A means to balance. Nothing more.” ---------- “Worst of all is that I not only set out to design them because of you, I literally designed their physical and tangible attributes for you.” I swallowed hard and cleared my throat, hoping I wouldn’t sound as lame as I felt just then. Softly I asked, “What do you mean?” “Think about it, Sam. In all the world with its billions of people and androids, what are the chances that you end up with Lucas?” He paused for effect. It worked. What were the chances? Remote, at best. “I was livid that night, Sammy.” He smiled, but it was a small smile, and one that still held a good deal of regret. “How can you really not have known that I wanted you for myself?”
It was also interesting to philosophize if Sam really fell in love with Lucas or his creator - Nick, since he was the one who programmed how Lucas sees and feels and reacts to the world... And the part in book where Sam (after sleeping with Lucas) had encounter with Nick....that one was VERY interesting
“Christ,” Nick whispered under his breath. “You two finally did the deed last night, didn’t you?” My head whipped around. “Wha-what?” I stammered like an idiot as my face flushed furiously. But Nick’s gaze slipped from my wide eyes to my neck, and he smirked. “That’s what I thought. No wonder he’s being so smug.” My eyes grew even wider, and before I could stop it, my hand guiltily slapped over my neck, where I knew that damn hickey was. “You know… we’ve only been dating a few weeks!” I insisted in my defense. “There’s no ‘finally’ about it!” Nick snorted, shook his head, and returned to cleaning up the work area. As he turned his back to me in order to replace several mechanical components in their material slots on the shelf, he asked, “So… how was I?”
I was still staring at his back wide-eyed, my face burning, so it took me a second to understand what he meant by that. “Ugh,” I said, rolling my eyes and dropping my hand. “Just like a guy to try and take credit for another man’s sexual prowess.” Nick turned a broad grin and glittering blue eyes on me. “That good, huh?” he said unabashedly. “I’ll count that as a successful program in my notes, then.” I gawked at him. He ignored me, took out an electronic notepad from his lab coat, and began hurriedly typing with one hand on the screen. “I’m betting Malcolm is even better, given his disciplined bellicosity,” he said nonchalantly and without looking up from his pad. “Care to find out for me? Purely for the sake of science? I would have to warn you though,” he continued with a thoughtful finger to his chin in pretend concern. “Zero’s added height is the tip of the iceberg; everything about IRM-1000 is bigger.”
My mouth snapped shut. My gaze narrowed. I thought very quickly, and just as quickly I came to a conclusion. Nick was venting. He was clearly jealous, and passive-aggressive dickheadism was how Nicholas Byron dealt with his jealousy. “I can do that,” I replied with a nonchalant shrug as I grabbed my own pad and stylus from the table. “And that’s noted on the size difference; thank you for the heads up.” I turned to a fresh page on the screen and began sketching out ideas that were coalescing in my brain. “But he isn’t next on my list, to be honest. I’m curious how Daniel compares first, given his obvious alpha-rebel comportment, so I’ve penned him in for Thursday night. Hand me that nanite retractor?” I never looked up at him, but Nick had fallen silent and the retractor was slow in coming. Plus, I could practically feel the flames licking at me from where he stood a few feet away....
Not sure if I should give it 3 or 4 stars. Took a bit of work and will power to read... and then ended on a cliff hanger. I don’t think I have it in me to read the next one so I think I’ll call it a day. I like the world. I like the characters, the mystery... but parts can be ‘too convenient’ and the explanations as to why something that was previously possible but now is not possible get a little tiring.
Loved this book. Provokes higher though while entertaining. Tons of turns and surprises. Characters are great. Males are yummy. Cannot wait for book two.
First and foremost this book ends on a cliffhanger. And has I known I would never have purchased it. I don't believe in indulging writers in their effort to gouge their customers with inane verbage to line their pockets. That being said, I enjoy the concept of this book but don't feel it lived up to the expectation. The heroine is a genius inventor who is able to have human men and androids vying for her affection but it almost comes across like she can't make up her mind. She is sexually attracted to everyone and it's anyone's guess who she will eventually end up with. Samantha is supposed to be brilliant but there are too many instances where she is stupid being belief. Risking the lives of others for ridiculous reasons. She was frustrating to read and often hard to like. As for the men, and there are many, but the characters are not flushed out enough to know it understand them. Even at the end I still have no idea who is good and who is evil. If that was the authors plan then kudos it was successful. But if she wanted the audience to care, she should have delved deeper into the make characters. Especially the humans. Sometimes they seem like major characters but more often they act as supporting. The androids are more complex yet created by one of these men. It's bizarre. What's sad is the book had potential to be really good but so many things feel short and the plot became so complicated and convoluted it took over and we're left with surface characters and no one to root for. I will not be buying book two. I was not invested in these people or their stories. NEXT.
Honestly, normally I really enjoy Heather's books, after all, I have bought ALL of them including this one, and, I would of enjoyed this one but for 3 main factors; 1) I really did feel it was a bit OTT with the amount twisting going on and, the inordinate amount of references to Star Wars and Star Trek etc - don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the nerd stuff but I found that there was too much "Padding" going on with it in this novel and, to be frank, it made me skim quite a bit as, in places it became rather blah blah blah, drone :( and that's a pity, especially as I still managed to spot several mistakes while I as at it, and for £4.79, well, that's not on. 2) And this is an important factor, so let me be really clear... I HATE CLIFFHANGERS!! If I'd know it was going to end that way, I honestly would NOT have bought it, maybe sometime in the distant future when the rest of it was published but certainly not right now coz she's already got a new series on the go - Withered, started and that looks like it's died a death, which is a pity as it had loads of promise and, that's annoying as I've bought into it, so, waiting and waiting for the next book in that series aaaaaaannnnd.... nothing, where is it??? Is this what will happen with the other half (or god forbid another bloody cliffhanger) of this book? 3) And, this question is something that I'm sure other fans will have noticed, I strongly felt there was a LARGE amount of character names and their personalities are very much straight out of the Big Bad Wolf Series. Was I disappoint? Personally, I didn't feel it was up to her normal standards, mainly coz I ended up skimming, so, yeah, I was a bit.
I have read several books by Heather Killough-Walden and have enjoyed them. Unfortunately this fell short of the mark and I gave up reading it, not getting halfway through the book. I love the premise, Androids that are virtually human except for emotions which the most advanced Android,Zero, wants to obtain. The main character, Samanatha, was beyond irritating for me, she is the key to conundrum but for someone who was supposed to be a genius , she came across, to me as a wet weekend, and showed little spark, talent or brain power. Given that she is the key in the Android revolution I could find little that showed that except the odd comment about creating something that made Androids waterproof. I really tried but just couldn't carry on and the fact that there is to be a second book, I really couldn't believe it as this book is 700 pages long . I don't like to write negative reviews but I was so disappointed I felt moved to write something.
This was a really interesting story with a great cast of characters. It has mystery, twists and turns and gives you lots to think about. What let this book down, however, was the fact that it could have used another round of editing. There were numerous typing errors and mistakes that meant sentences didn’t make sense or messed with continuity. For example: 'emotion emitting device' changes within a chapter to 'emotion emitting diode'. Jonathan’s son’s name changes from Logan to Nathan to Theo and then back to Nathan. This lack of attention to detail really takes you out of a story. It’s a shame that the book is let down in this way.
It does feel like the story is setting itself up for an epic saga and I’m definitely intrigued by the story and the characters and I definitely want to know what happens next!
O My Word!! What an epic read! I just couldn't put it down. I loved everything of it....and seriously can't wait for the next one because man o man what a cliffhanger!! This one has it all! I love all of Heather's book and she sure went all stops on this one! I love the dept of the characters, the twist and turns, the sheer volume of information and also so much of all the things that are being told and reviewed from the same books and movies I seriously love...it's awe inspiring also when you think of all the hard word she has to have put into finding all that out. I seriously am short of words to describe this awesome new serie. It definitely rocked my world 😍
This book isn't Heather Killough-Walden's usual faire. This ride is completely different and full of action. No spoilers here! Read the book, it's quite an adventure. For those of you that have a problem with cliffhangers, stop watching TV and don't go to the movies, cliffhangers are a way of life in the entertainment industry and Heather Killough-Walden is a very entertaining author.
This book was very different from any book I've read by this author, that being said, it was wonderful. It has everything you want and need in a book. It was about a dream I have bad all my life. It was about androids.....androids that feel and think like humans....it's riveting and you will fall in love and get angry and cry and laugh. You will love this book so do yourself a favor and buy it!
This is not a regular android story. I honestly started this book because of the cover (I MEAN LOOK AT THAT) and did not regret my decision. The plot and the writing surprised me. I honestly didn't expect it to be that good. This was my first book by this author and I am cursing myself for not discovering her sooner. I am dying to read the second book. Give this book a shot, you won't regret it.
OMG! What a page turner. I couldn't put it down to the very end. Definitely a HKW style book. It starts off a little slow, but once you get thru the techy explanations it becomes a real page turner. I'm still not quite sure who the real hero is. I will be waiting impatiently for the next book.
Heather has done it again. Her newest book is just as riveting as her previous ones. I love the dynamic between Sam and all those that care about her. I appreciate the strength and vulnerability along with the brilliant mind that her character has. I can't wait to see how the next part of her story unfolds.
I'm not sure about this book. I had to push myself to finish it, which isn't usually the case with this author's books. I found it a bit all over the place, lots of twists. Too many? Could have been condensed, felt there was too much padding. The story line is good so I will probably read the next book, but won't be in any great hurry.
This book didn't really get going for me till half way through, the beginning felt like i was reading a book I'd read a few years ago but I did enjoy it when it started to the guess who game, will read the next one
Love all of Heather books. This book had me gripped from the first page, I couldn't put it down. Totally different from any of her other books but as usual I can't wait for part 2.
Almost every man in this book has blue eyes, which I'm a sucker for. I'm hooked on this new world and new characters. I can't wait for the next one to release. Great job Heather!
As always Heather has written a wonderful book. Different and quite interesting with a few twists and turns that keep you glued to the story. Quite the mystery and I can't wait for the next installment.
This was completely different to what i was used to very futuristic and techy but i loved the plot twists and intrigue-amazing writing as usual from hkw
The storyline was interesting, but I often found myself skipping through some of the descriptions. Too much.. I also expected a few steamy parts. It was not the type of book I expected .
