Since the publication of Fancy Nancy, Jane O'Connor's closet now boasts so many boas, tiaras, and sparkly ensembles that sometimes friends do not recognize her on the street. She still resides (that's a fancy word for lives) in New York City with her family and their canine companion, Arrow. --from the publisher's website
Cute story about a Halloween party. Fancy Nancy is going as grapes. She uses balloons for the grapes. It's a cute costume, but disaster strikes and all her balloons pop throughout the night. She figures out a way to deal with it and at the end of the book you get to decorate her with stickers. It's a cute outing. I appreciate Nancy's zest for dressing up. I love that.
It's our last year for Fancy Nancy. The niece has outgrown it and I barely got her to read the story. She said it was ok and then gave it 2 stars. That girl is not afraid to give few stars.
I underestand a costume like the one Fancy Nancy wore. One year for Halloween, I went as a Bubble bath. I wrapped a towel around me and put on pick, blue, and white balloons. My hair was wrapped up in a towel and I had a rubber ducky in my hand. One of the cheapest costumes ever. Also one of the most uncomfortable. I didn't put any balloons on my backside so I was able to sit down. People did love the costume, but it was hard to move and tiring. Still, I did have fun. Balloons are not the way to go, or you only do them once. I might have had a few pop, but not many. They weren't blown up too big and so they could take a beating. Driving was the toughest party. I barely fit behind the wheel.
Okay, I admit it, I kind of love Fancy Nancy ;-) And I love seasonal books. Yet, I held off on getting this one because I was afraid it would be too gimmicky with the "stickers inside!" and all that. It just screams, "BUY ME!", like a box of cereal with a toy inside; I didn't want this to be the book equivalent of frosted-chocolate-sugar-coated-flakes...
Fortunately, it's a delightful treat for Halloween that won't leave you with "empty calories." The illustrations are darling and I love the "fancy" creativity that Nancy and her friends put into making them. It's cute seeing her grandparents get "fancy" and dress up for the holiday, taking Nancy on a little shopping trip for treats. And the Halloween party scene is adorable--there is a very cute cat, and while I admit at a few points I was a little worried about whether it was enjoying itself and being properly watched after, in the end it clearly was ;-) The stickers fit in with the cute "surprise" ending so they actually work creatively with the story. There's no way this is skyrocketing to win any literary awards, but it is definitely a good choice for girly-girls who enjoy the "pretty" side of Halloween, and like paper dolls and dress-up.
Fancy Nancy: Halloween… or Bust! will definitely be a treat for young readers on Halloween.
In Fancy Nancy: Halloween… or Bust! Fancy Nancy prepares for a Halloween party. Of course, her costume must be fancy! After trying on several costumes, Nancy decides to go to a Halloween party as a grape. Fancy Nancy runs into trouble, however, when the purple balloons on her costume start popping.
Even though many picture books take the main character and throw together a holiday book, I think this book definitely stands out among the rest. Nancy’s fashion sense fits perfectly in with the plot of the book–finding the most fabulous Halloween costume. Even though the book isn’t written by Fancy Nancy’s creator, the book appears consistent with the other Fancy Nancy books.
One of my favorite aspects of the Fancy Nancy series is Nancy’s colorful language. She always sneaks in synonym within her speech. I think this is a great way to expose young readers to more advanced vocabulary in a fun way, but also give Nancy an interesting and unique personality.
Another aspect of this book that I really enjoyed was the sticker activity in the end that involved the reader in the story. Even though my used copy already had the last page filled out, I think readers will love dressing up one of their favorite children’s book characters in an amazing costume.
Fancy Nancy is a solid Halloween book for young readers. With a fun main character and additional sticker activity, I give this book four out of five stars.
Fancy Nancy: Halloween.... or Bust is the perfect October read for your little Fancy Girl. Nancy shows you that Halloween is ALL about dressing up. Nancy knows how to make everything even more fancy, with special touches, and special FANCY words that give the ordinary a new meaning. Here are just a few of the new words Fancy Nancy introduces the young readers to:
* Unique - one of a kind * bonbons -fancy candy * disastrous - very bad
Nancy's Halloween Party included games such as, pin the tail on the monster, but before the party is over Nancy experiences something "disastrous" herself -- it has to do with her costume. Fortunately, the readers lucky enough to read this book, can help Nancy make a new costume with the lovely stickers that come with this book.
I've read and reviewed several Fancy Nancy books and have enjoyed them all, and this one is no exception. I'm not quite sure, but for some reason, this Halloween story seemed to have fewer "fancy" words, than the other books, but I could be wrong. A fun read for a fun Holiday! Little Girls will love it.
A fun story that introduces a few fancy words. Great for Halloween, but the end is slightly problematic.
Nancy is a cluster of grapes for Halloween. It is comprised of balloons which ultimately pop, leaving her without a costume. On the final page, she encourages the reader to correct this by creating a new costume for her by placing stickers all over her. My library edition doesn't have the stickers. Even if it did, after you use the stickers then you can't really use the book again.
I think it would be great to tell this story and then give a group of kids a handout of Nancy and a bunch of stickers so they can each create a new costume, and you can save your book.

I am pretty new to the world of fancy Nancy but I really adore these stories she is really creatives and out going and is not a Cookie cut type of girl/ character what an amazing persona for young kids, I Instead of being like everyone else be unique and just be you. This has been the cutest of the Halloween books I have read so far. Nancy dressing like a chute grape out then having it keep popping while taking part at the party which makes her of course sad but now it up to you to help her make a new costume :) in couraging kids imagination and their energy
Nancy is going to a Halloween party, she's going as a bunch of grapes, her friend Bree is going as a strawberry. The party starts out great, with lots of games and food, but then the purple balloons Nancy used in her costume get popped one by one and she's left wearing a dull brown leotard. There are stickers included in the book and on the last page you're instructed to create a new costume for Nancy out of them.
What can I say that hasn't already been said before? Love Fancy Nancy! This book is just as fun as all the others. Maybe more so since you have the fun option of using stickers in this one (a major bonus for my McKenna). One day I will own every Fancy Nancy book, and I will cherish each and every one!
28 months - Thought O would like this book because she's recently gotten into dressing up. I'm not a big fan of books with stickers but of course that part of it was a big hit. Love the grape costume but generally speaking it's just an ok story. I look forward to reading the original Fancy Nancy to see what makes Nancy so popular.
My best friend's daughter asked me to read this to her over breakfast at Walker Bros yesterday. I cracked up at the title- possibly one of the best book titles I've ever heard! I'm new to this Fancy Nancy series, but I immediately loved it. The vocabulary the author throws in is impressive, and then Nancy says, "That's a fancy way of saying..." Super cute, funny, and engaging.
I'm relatively new to the Fancy Nancy books, but so far, I really like them. They're cute. This one made me laugh. I'm not much a fan of Halloween, but I enjoyed this sweet perspective and the creative costumes. I like that Fancy Nancy uses a few larger words and then explains what they mean. It's a good way to begin expanding your young reader's mind.
“Nancy is so silly. She always has big hair and bows and ribbons and lots of accessories. She cries after she pops all her balloons on her costume. That was a little sad but she still had clothes on, she didn’t need to cry or be embarrassed. I love Halloween and costumes. She should have been a princess. Princesses don’t need balloons. I like this story.” - V, age 4
Fancy Nancy really gives off kind of a softer Junie B. Jones vibe, which I find appealing. There are several funny parts to this story that made me smile, and the overall effect of the book is very nice. I would give it one and a half stars.
This is a really cute book about a costume party. It's not scary so I think it would be good in the classroom. Students could use their creative side when reading this book and design their own costume.
We really liked this story--especially how creative Fancy Nancy is with her costume. But at the end--you create a new costume for Nancy with the stickers in the book--which really lends itself to only one reading, and kind of a crappy ending.
Fancy Nancy books are always great as vocab boosters. It is nice to see a book that adds more challenging words for the kids. This book is, of course, about Halloween and dressing up and Nancy's costume failure (which is where the bust comes in). Cute.
fancy Nancy is a wonderful character. This is a book that children will love to have read aloud. In the classroom this book will be useful when talking about using imagination, talking about Adjectives, Halloween, and it could just be a fun read.
This book would be a great book to read to students on Halloween. After reading this book a teacher could let the children all take turns talking about their costumes. They could even take turns choosing a new costume for Nancy sense her grape costume didn't work out.
So recently, my daughter has become extremely interested in Fancy Nancy. So, we have been reading some of the Fancy Nancy series. This series is lots of fun and all the heart warming moments are a nice touch to the rather flouncy, fancy moments.
In this Nancy book she and her family get ready for Halloween with costumes and candy. They go to a costume party and she's a bunch of grapes. She has balloons as her grapes but as she plays the balloons start popping at the end of the book she has none left...
Fancy Nancy loves to dress up for Halloween. Children will love this book and all the costumes. The audio was a great way to read this book as the narrator made it very interesting.
