this was cute but i feel like these two were thrown into a relationship out of the blue. one minute they’re strictly friends and the next, one guy is randomly confessing his feelings and the other just so happens to feel the same way automatically. i guess i was expecting there to be more of a push and pull since they’d been friends for so long. similar to the whole “i don’t want this to ruin our friendship” cliché.

Estuvo re bonis. El dibujo me encantó, y fue un lindo tomo único. Es el segundo manga que leo que gira alrededor de un club de cine, y si bien 君は夏のなか 初回限定版 sigue siendo mi favorito (el primero que leí, y dejó la vara muy alta ahr), también disfruté mucho de éste.

I had just finished rewatching Banana Fish when I first picked up Twilight Out of Focus, and honestly, I was still wrecked. I wasn’t looking for something similar—I knew nothing could really match Ash and Eiji—but I needed something to fill that ache. This manga didn’t come close in story or tone, but it gave me just enough softness and intimacy to land on my feet again. It felt like a quiet aftershock. Comforting, in a way I didn’t expect.
The pacing leans slow and internal, which works when you’re in the mood for something that simmers instead of explodes. Mao and Hisashi’s relationship isn’t loud or dramatic—most of their story happens in looks, hesitations, and quiet gestures. There are moments when the drama feels a bit heavy-handed or the characters' decisions feel uneven, but it’s never insincere. The way they dance around their feelings, and the vulnerability layered underneath, kept me invested.
It’s not a perfect read, but it hit at the right emotional frequency when I needed it to. If you’re coming off something heavy and looking for a story that leans more into the tender, this manga offers a soft landing. Not a replacement—just a reminder that new connections can still feel honest and worth holding onto.

Oh my god that just ended?? No bonus content??? I want more!! Looking at the cover I had a feeling I would love this, but this exceeded my expectations. I absolutely adored the story and the art and the characters. It was so beautiful. I loved it so much.

This got an official English translation (called Twilight Out of Focus) so I had to revisit it. I hope Kodansha translates the sequel too :') and maybe do physicals?? This story is just so beautiful. The art, the characters. I love it a lot. It didn't really have the same impact on me as it did the first time I read it, but I still really loved it.
This story follows two boys Mao and Hisashi who are roommates in an all boys school dorm. Hisashi comes out to Mao and they come up with three rules to keep a happy living situation. 1. Mao will never out Hisashi 2. Hisashi won't come onto Mao 3. They'll give each other space when they need to masturbate and use plushies as a signal. Their dorm life goes by smoothly until one day in Mao's film club the director decides he wants to film a BL and he wants Hisashi to play one of the leads. Mao becomes immediately nervous about it because he doesn't want Hisashi to think he outed him, but there's more to it. Then it goes from there.
I really loved this story. I loved the relationship between the boys. I loved the writing so much. I would honestly love to read a novel by this author. The art is gorgeous and I love the story as is, but the way the author writes? I think it would be beautiful in a novel/light novel format too. It's very sweet and a little sad and this first volume left me wanting more. So I truly hope that Kodansha translates overlap and maybe more titles by Jyanome. I believe there's a spin off with the director, which I would love to read. Just an excellent story all around.

Oye, que me ha gustado mucho. ¿Quién me lo diría? No me lo esperaba para nada.

Otra de las muchas historias que tenía guardadas en el Want to read pero que hasta que el día de ayer no le di una oportunidad. Esta es una serie en la que cada tomo se va a centrar en una pareja, sino me equivoco.
“And I promise…to never think of a Tsuchiya in a romantic way. And I swear to god that I will never, ever under any circumtance, make a move on him, either”.
Puntos a favor han sido el dibujo que me ha parecido una maravilla y el desarrollo de la historia, que, si bien en un tomo puede parecer muy corto, siento que el hecho de que los personajes al ya conocerse de antes su desarrollo de amigos a novios se pueden comprender. Eso sí, decirse te amo ya me parece un poco excesivo.
“Why did I have to see the truth…when this love’s hopeless from the start?”
Puntos negativos ha sido que me hubiera gustado un poco más de extensión así como otro desarrollo de los hechos, pero tengo más entrega de diferentes personajes, no voy a ponerme extremadamente exquisita.

Oye, que me ha gustado mucho. ¿Quién me lo diría? No me lo esperaba para nada.

I swear the art looks like a 1080p Doukyuusei (although, Mao doesn't wear glasses here, but ya know what I mean), not that I hate that idea tho! This novel is adorable!!! The narration is topnotch. I love how sentimental it is, and the amount of angst! And the camera motif! Augh, I want to scream! I love it! I love it! I fell in love with Ichikawa's visual too!!!

Okay this was soooo cute and meta and hilarious and precious!!!!
I really enjoyed how meta it was! Calling out all the tropes and silliness and it was so fun. The way Mao was just, like, randomly in love with Hisashi was a choice but I didn’t think about it too much.
I loved the art and the story and tbh I just loved it all!
And I wanna be honest—I thought this genuinely had something to do with the Twilight movies. Like… I was waiting for vampires to appear.

the romance was actually kinda cute ? super short, so really, i didn't feel much but it was cute.

Para garantizarse una buena convivencia, Mao y Hisashi hicieron tres promesas: Mao no le dirá a nadie que Hisashi es homosexual y tiene novio; Hisashi no verá a Mao como un interés romántico y nunca le pondrá un dedo encima; y por último, no se interrumpiràn cuando el otro se esté masturbando.
Durante la primavera de su segundo año, el club de cine al cual pertenece Mao se prepara para filmar una película y el director insiste en que Hisashi es perfecto para interpretar al protagonista: un pandillero apuesto y homosexual, mientras tanto Mao todavía no sabe qué es el amor y no entiende cómo definir lo que siente. Así es como comienza este romance cáustico.

Comienza con un buen punto de partida en base a dos chicos haciendo promesas frente a una cámara a modo de presentación, camara la cuál más adelante tomará más importancia a lo largo de este OneShot (no la cámara en sí, pero si respecto a la acción de grabar con una misma). La historia continua con Mao en un intento de desarrollo sobre un concepto vago de "¿que es el amor?" y "autodescubrimiento" el cuál podría haber dado mucho más juego en el desarrollo del personaje y la historia, este mismo deja que desear pero cumple con lo mínimo para poder continuar con la historia.
Luego se muestra las malas experiencias de Hisashi las cuales desembocan en ser excluido de su familia y el terminar en una relación tóxica prohibida con un ex profesor, acciones tales que funcionan como puente para concluir en; Tadashi y Mao en una relación amorosa, lo cual se veía e esperaba desde los primeros paneles. En mí opinión esto podría haberse concluido en poco más de la mitad del tomo y hubiese sido la misma experiencia para el lector. en resumen, Twilight Outfocus no es un mal título si bien tiene un final no concluyente en algo más concreto o profundo. Podría tener un mejor desarrollo de historia y personajes (como un desarrollo enfocado en Mao), exceptuando esos detalles de argumento es un título que le entrega al lector lo que ofrece a simple vista y cumple con las expectativas que el mismo puede tener, por eso mismo la calificación que le otorgo a este tomo es de 2.5/5.

This was so perfect! It features 2 high school boys who are roommates that promise to not be together, because one is gay and the other is straight. But over time, Mao, the straight one, realizes he has feelings for Hisashi, the gay one. It all takes place while the film club creates a BL movie.
The biggest portion that shocked me was that Hisashi had already been in a relationship with someone we don’t meet until after they break up. Then we find out it’s his homeroom teacher, who he’s been in a relationship with since he was 13 or 14. 🤯🤯🤯🤯
I already have the next 3 volumes, so I’m trying to decide if I binge them, or wait and read them slowly.🤷🏻♂️

Buas, este no solo me ha encantado, me ha tocado lo más profundo. Y eso que es una historia sencilla, pero va tan a fuego lento... Y tiene un dibujo tan, TAN sexy... Estoy deseando leer la segunda parte.

Twighlight Outfocus legt den Fokus auf die Protagonisten, deren Vertrauen ineinander und den eigenen Umgang mit den Gefühlen.
Konstrukte, wie diese mag ich enorm. Ich brauche keine krasse Handlung, wenn mich die Charaktere und Emotionen so in den Bann ziehen, wie hier.
Mao und Hisashi haben sich mit Ehrlichkeit, Offenheit und Akzeptanz ein Vertrauensverhältnis geschaffen, was ich wunderbar finde.
Jeder wünscht sich mehr von der Welt des anderen zu erfahren und dem anderen keinesfalls unrecht zu tun. Diese Rücksichtnahme spürt man beim Lesen auch.
Es gibt einfach so viele schöne Situationen. Klar, dass ich da mehr als einmal Herzklopfen hatte. Hier stimmt für mich einfach alles, zumal viele Verhaltensweisen realistisch wirken.
Wie schon erwähnt, ist die Story hier nicht im Fokus, aber trotzdem schafft sie ein schönes Setting. Denn die beiden teilen sich ein Zimmer in einem Jungeninternat und beginnen zusammen an einem BL Film zu arbeiten. Dieses ganze drum herum ist einfach toll, genauso wie die crazy Nebencharaktere.
Und das erste Mal, dass ich einfach heilfroh bin, dass wir hier ein Großformat haben, denn dieser leicht unsaubere und trotzdem mit ausreichend Details versorgte Zeichenstil trifft bei mir voll ins schwarze!
