Nariyuki Yuiga is a brilliant but poor high school student who’s offered a scholarship to the university of his choice – with one condition: tutor maths genius Rizu Ogata and literature genius Rumino Furuhashi to excel at their chosen subjects to get into the universities of their choices. Except Rizu wants to be good at literature and Rumino wants to be good at maths, and neither are remotely good at either! Sounds like this wacky crazy manga needs multiple volumes and a hit anime show to play out!

I quite liked the first volume of Taishi Tsutsui’s series We Never Learn. It’s a light rom-com that’s not going to blow anyone away for its originality or treatment but it’s cute and engaging.

The setup – why both girls want to be good at subjects they’re not - is mega-contrived and daffy in that manga way most titles that rely on a similar conceit are, but it allows for some amusing scenes. It helps though that the characters are likeable as this looks to be a character-driven, rather than story-driven, title.

At first I thought it was going to be this awkward love triangle between Nariyuki and the two (of course) gorgeous girl leads, even though they’re thrown together and barely know each other. But then a fourth character – Uruka Takemoto, the school’s swim champion, who’s secretly crushing hard on Nariyuki, and also in need of his tutoring – is introduced and the romance angle makes sense. Uruka wants to let clueless Nariyuki know how she feels but realises she has to compete with the other two – or does she? Who knows who Nariyuki fancies?

There’s a couple of gratuitous panels of Rizu and Rumino bathing and some pervy angles of Uruka in her swimming outfit which makes me think this is more of a male-intended audience. And, as expected for a learning-focused title, there are some pointers on studying technique that are useful for anyone but especially for teenage readers still in school.

Tutoring, study groups and chaste pining: not the most gripping material you’ll read, and it’s not, but I still found We Never Learn, Volume 1 to be a mildly entertaining beginning to a charming series.

Volume notes:
This is where everything begins. We are introduced to our four leads. Yuiga is given the unenviable task of tutoring two geniuses in their weakest subjects. Fumino and Ogata are so dismal that several tutors have given up on them. Uruka joins them as a jock character who is secretly harboring a crush on Yuiga since middle school.

The writing is okay, and the art is cute. It is a serviceable first volume.

Series review:
"We Never Learn" or #BokuBen is a comedy manga that draws its laughs from the interactions of the main character Yuiga with his harem, I mean, his classmates Fumino, Ogata, and Uruka. He tutors them, with a college scholarship on the line for him. There are also two other supporting characters in the periphery, teacher Kirasu, and recent alum Asumi, whose orbits sometimes cross into the paths of the main cast. It has the usual pervy tropes found in manga of its ilk, although toned down because of the high school setting. It was a manga I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did. It gave me that "finale high" which I associate with stories that get me as a reader.

One reason I probably enjoyed this series is the earnestness of the main character. One can't help but cheer for him. He's a good guy and hopelessly clueless sometimes, which is main component of his charm.

My rating for the entire series is 4 stars.

Okay, this is a weird one for me. I have to say, right here and now, if you are looking for an original rom com, this is not for you. The characters are pretty generic, the interactions are what one would expect in a series like this, and the artwork is simple. There is the typical "science/math girl who has trouble understanding feelings" and the "proper young lady, known for her beauty, who happens to say unintentionally harsh things", and everyone's favorite, the "energetic, athletic childhood friend who has a crush on the main character". Even if one wants to argue that these characteristics aren't necessarily always together, the basic aspects of each girl's personality is seen in practically every shounen series without anything original added in. The main character, Yuiga, is the stereotypical "busy high school student with no time for romance yet thrust into a harem situation" but honestly his character is more flushed out than the others (more on that later). And yet, with all of these complaints...I actually really enjoyed it. And, more than anything, felt like I NEEDED it right now. Let me explain:
Recently, it feels like shows/movies/books/anime with grittier/darker/edgier themes have been occupying peoples' minds, with some notable exceptions. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to read something like that (I happen to have a few series that fit at least one, if not all, of those descriptions) there comes a time when I need a break from it. The problem is, finding good lighthearted series that I am willing to spend money on are hard to find. Most of these series either have annoying characters, too much fanservice, or boring beyond belief. I don't usually read/purchase them for these reasons, but that doesn't mean I don't seek them out. That's why I was genuinely glad that I latched on to We Never Learn, because I was desperately searching for a new lighthearted rom com to read. Make no mistake, despite how much I enjoyed reading it, I can't in good conscience give more than three stars for the aforementioned reasons. However, Yuiga's desire to help his impoverished family was refreshing, the art style was simple but pleasing to the eye, and the way the mangaka consistently added doodles of the characters' speaking in their speech bubbles was adorable and enjoyable to see.
I can easily see why others wouldn't want to continue with this series after the first volume. It doesn't have a terribly original idea, the scenarios that occur are predictable, and the characters are not that interesting. However, I had fun reading it, and look forward to continuing with the series. I look forward to what volume 2 has to offer!

A humorous story about a guy who works super hard for his grades trying to tutor geniuses in the opposite field of their area of expertise. Some jokes land, some don't, but I really appreciate the dynamics between characters when it comes to studying. Watching geniuses who have never had to work hard struggle and the guy who gets it because he's always had to struggle is a refreshing take and a pretty honest one, even if it's exaggerated for laughs.

It really picks up in the last chapter or two when a third 'genius' is thrown into the mix. I feel like we see some growth on Yuiga's part especially in learning how to tailor lessons.

This is very similar to The Quintessential Quintuplets, though Nariyuki seams to be much nicer. I like that only one of the girls starts out liking him, and the two who don't are not mean to him. I also like how caring he is and the way he is able to tailor study guides to the girls is pretty cool, as is the way he figures out how to help U with her vocab. Overall, this looks like it will be a fun series.

This review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!

Read 7 volumes

I was worried this would have a lot more fan service than it does but it also has a lot of heart and a cute message of following your passions. I’m enjoying it so far!

Study Tactics

When given a chance to have a scholarship to pay for his continued education poor (literally) Nariyuki jumps at the chance to become a tutor to the logical science genius Rizu and the shy but kind literature genius Fumino. The only problem is the schools they want to attend have nothing to do with their natural talents and Nariyuki has quite the challenge to see their goals fulfilled. So who is the third girl on the cover not mentioned in the description I paraphrased up to this point? Well what would a potential harem school manga be without a childhood friend coming along for the ride as she eventually gets added to the roster thanks to her incredible swimming talent but equally terrible study habits. Nariyuki was already spending so much time trying to help the other two I hope everything turns out for the best for him in the end with this triple threat. For his own future and for the sake of those he has taken under his wing this is a manga that not only has cute girls but actual advise for studying if you pay attention to what is being said.

That said I am sure there will be some that might compare this to The Quintessential Quintuplets, Vol. 1 which is understandable considering the protagonist in both series is a poor student using tutoring as a means to achieve their goals but from what I remember of the series the girls are far more mischievous and this series comes off as more cute which is nice if you are into stories about a kind protagonist growing on those he helps.

These girls are dumb as sacks of hammers in the fields they want to go to post secondary for, but geniuses elsewhere. Poor Nariyuki keeps up his good grades by sheer hardwork! He never half asses anything. But in order to receive the full scholarship he needs to attend post second he must do volunteer work in order to get his principal to approve him. His principal assigns him to tutor two geniuses, but in their worse subjects, which is what they want to go to post secondary to study...yeah. These girls of dumb as bricks in the subjects they want to study.

Rizu is a science genius who has her heart set on studying liberal arts. Fumino is a natural at literature, but math makes no sense to her. Poor Nariyuki is stuck trying to teach them. He gives it his all, like always. The girls eventually find out just how hard Nariyuki is trying in order to help them when they visit his home for a study session. Gradually they start to make some progress. Then Takemoto joins the group. She's a prodigy at swimming, but sucks at English. Nariyuki has to figure out how to get her up to a passing grade in order for her to continue swimming. Add on the fact that Takemoto has a crush on him, is jealous of the two other girls and things get more interesting.

Seriously though, Takemoto carries this manga. Nariyuki is okay, but the other girls come off a bit flat as characters. All in all it was alright.

I received my copy from the publisher through Edelweiss+.

Unfortunate brainy boy Nariyuki Yuiga agrees to tutor two of his hot girl classmates who are geniuses in exchange for a scholarship to a prestigious school. They're far from geniuses in the subjects in which Yuiga tutors them, but the author wants you to know they're cute. You get nudes to prove it because manga is both a visual and story-driven art form. Anyway, Yuiga is a sweet softboy and helps them earnestly by making them (and his other friends he looks out for) customized study guides. They meet his family and learn how sweet he is because it's never obvious to the oblivious.

Then another hot but dumb jock girl comes along and the principal wants Yuiga to tutor her, too. Despite the school's elite status, there's a shortage of qualified tutors in the area, you see. She hates studying though, so it's a challenge this time. She just wants to swim. But she likes Yuiga, so she sometimes wants to "study."

This is cute. It's also perfect for people who like this kind of thing.

Cinco finales alternativos.

#TeamFumino

* Manga offert lors d'une opération 2+1*

I bought this manga on a whim as I had a coupon from Kobo. I am very surprised at how much I liked this manga. I fully expected the male lead to be a total perve but he wasn't! Sure there are some slightly sexualized scenes but they weren't enough to put me off.

I really loved Nariyuki's dedication to tutoring Rizu and Fumino. While he started doing it to guarantee a recommendation letter from his school's principal, he doesn't half-ass it. He works really hard to make workbooks for each girl and he takes the time to listen to their needs. I also really like that they showed why each girl wanted to enter a major they're really bad at it. I felt it gave real weight not only to the plot but to the characters as well. I loved seeing them interact with each other and start to build a friendship.

I definitely plan on reading the next volume. If you're looking for a fun lighthearted slice-of-life manga, this is a good place to start. I cannot wait to see how the characters develop in the next volume.

4/5 I really enjoyed the first volume of this harem manga. Our protagonist Nariyuki just want's to succeed at getting into a school program that will see him to college, presumably on a scholarship, so he can become successful and help his family. However in order to do this the principle insists that Nariyuki needs to tutor 3 genius girls who are all great in their preferred topics but terrible at everything else so being a jack of all trades master of none he's told he must help them to reach his goals.

Nariyuki is selfless and a bit of a pushover however he's a nice lead and he's at least not shit on constantly which is nice to see in a harem. The harem girls are all gorgeous and fun and so far there are none that I dislike.

Our heroines Rizu, Fumino, and Uruka on the cover of volume 1.

This is a manga where a hard working young man who I believe is the protagonist has been working very hard although he does not have the natural talents and abilities of others to try and overcome hardship. Along the way there are interesting characters, female nudity, and some incidental comedy.

Nariyuki Yuiga is a poor boy who is trying to get a scholarship by being an exceptional student. The school administrator makes a deal with him; if he can get two of the school's natural geniuses into their school of choice, he gets the scholarship. The problem of course is that these geniuses are girls he likes, and they want to go to schools that specialize not in the subjects they excel in, but subjects they do poorly in.

Tries to be harem... not there yet. Somewhat entertaining though.

Well, now we have 3 cute girls in the tutor club. Sleeping beauty & miss mermaid are cute, adorable, loveable, & seem interested in sensei. Little miss F-cup, not so much. Pretty cold. But wait, is it just an act? Hmm. Well, on to the next volume to try & find out. Vedy intevesting, a wise man once said.also, a not-so-wise man once said "Sock it to me?" But, that's neither here nor there. Anyhow, art, pretty good, but a bit... juvenile. Dialogue, very good. Distinctive speech from the various characters. Not so sure about all them 2-dollar words the toddlers keep using... characters, fairly believable, for the most part. And some relatable, too.

3.5 stars. This was an enjoyable and light hearted read and I’m glad I read it. I’ve been reading a lot of thrillers and horror lately and this is a good palate cleanser. If you’re looking for an original groundbreaking rom com, you may wanna skip this one. It’s very tropey and the love interests are archetypal and kinda bland. I did really like the character Takamoto and thought she was fun. I found her crush on Nariyuki to be cute as well. I’ll probably continue on with this series when I need a nice pick me up after a bunch of murder mysteries.

Very stereotypical harem. Pretty much what I expected going in, but still disappointed. If I wasn’t already used to fan service in manga and anime, I’d probably hate this more than I do. And on top of all that, the plot is just so boring. And the romance being attempted is very stale. But I guess since it’s only volume one that that could change. Who knows. My library doesn’t have any other volumes from this series, so it’ll take a LOT of motivation to get me to continue it.

So much fun!

A Harem manga unlike other Harem manga. The protag actual wants to help these girls succeed, and since his future depends on that, romance is the furthest thing from his mind. The artwork was enjoyable and the story was a refreshing take on similar stories. I thoroughly enjoyed this, cant wait for book 2!

Y me hacía enojar (:
