It happens almost every day. I hear from a mom desperate for information on homeschooling her child with special needs and learning differences. She is terrified. She’s been told to not even consider it - that the experts need to be the ones in charge of her child’s special education. She’s terrified, yes. But somewhere, deep down, she knows it’s not working. She knows there just has to be another way. This book is a comprehensive look at homeschooling a child with learning differences and special needs. In addition to practical tips and encouragement, it includes specific chapters for those homeschooling children with autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders and other diagnoses.
I think this might be a great book for some folks, but I stopped reading at 70% when I realized I was skimming just to finish. It's a pretty short, light book that feels more like a series of blog posts than an in-depth look at the subject. The chapter on teaching an autistic child is, for example, five pages. The one on diagnoses is two.
It seemed mostly aimed at people who are thinking about homeschooling rather than parents already engaged in doing so. So it's high on the "encouragement" part of the subtitle but low on the "practical support". There's a lot of "this is how homeschooling could help your kid" rather than "here are specific and good resources for XYZ".
It's also just one person's experiences, so I found I really disagreed with some of the generalities (never once have I cried in the bathroom, sorry). And on that note of being one person's experiences -- both the kids she's talking about are "twice exceptional" (gifted + learning disabilities). So if that's not your family's situation, I imagine the generalities would be even harder to swallow.
Thank you for sharing your day to day struggles and victories in this book. My son is on the spectrum and while it's beautiful, and I'm grateful to be able to serve his needs at home, it gets tough sometimes. This book is beautifully written, an easy read, informative and above all, encouraging.
