Last Pandemic #1

Escape the Virus

Rate this book
Highly contagious, a deadly virus rips through the country like wildfire. No one is safe.

Albuquerque, NM is quickly overrun. People drop like flies. And with no one left to keep things running, they'll soon be plunged into darkness. City services grind to a halt. Those who manage to stay uncontaminated are left to compete for quickly-dwindling supplies.

Matt's a normal office worker with an eye for being prepared. But now that a real catastrophe has hit, he quickly realizes that he's not prepared enough. Much of his gear is back at home, and he's trapped at the office. Will he be able to cross a city that's quickly descending into chaos?

Matt's coworker, Jamie, finds herself flung into the violence and insanity. Her only way to survive? Pair up with someone who seems to have it figured out. For her, that's Matt. Her only problem? Their handful of dates a month ago didn't exactly end well.

Escape the Virus is book 1 of Last Pandemic, a post-apocalyptic survival thriller series. It deals with real people fighting for their survival every inch of the way.

This had some potential as a good story about the onset of a dreadful pandemic, but was woefully a very, very short volume. It also does not seem too realistic that in a relatively smaller city like Albuquerque, they would suddenly close all businesses and evacuate people to warehouse them in a central location (always a bad idea in an apocalypse). I would think that this onset would have taken a little more time and people encouraged to stay inside and away from others. My biggest issue was most of the characters. Matt was OK, but Damian and especially Mia were beyond lame as were the criminal element which are immediately out there. The onset of a deadly virus would be scary enough without the need of a character that is crazy and high in your midst and that rather diluted the tension from the encroaching pandemic. Judy is the only other worthwhile character and I'm not sure if I care if she or Matt ultimately survive.

This book series theme seems to be the Purge induced by a virus with a high mortality rate.
Because almost everyone any character meets is bad shit crazy, hell bend on robbing and killing them without apparent reason. It is boring really, the characters run around without any goal as aimless as the plot is.
I lost my interest in reading further.
The idea alone, that in a highly contagious pandemic the government or city officials would “evacuate” people and contain them in Stadions and school buildings like cattle is absurd, as the current pandemic not only belies that fact, it would have been a far stretch even without any real life demonstration.
I couldn’t find a connection with any character, although there was nothing wrong with most of them. It felt too generic.

Last pandemic

An aeroplane landed, nearly 400, passengers and crew. A 12 hour flight, and a virus onboard. Slowely infecting everyone on board, highly contagious and deadly. When the flight landed, the passengers and crew disembarked and went onto further flights around the country, or transport into the city. Mixing with even more people, infecting more.

Good simple story, short but entertaining!

The book introduced the world at the start of a high percentage-kill plague. The main characters, which there are several, are introduced as believable and flawed. The story moves along easily enough and very simply. It's a short read but has action, mostly logical plot and was fast paced. Will definitely try the second book!

Reading about a pandemic during a pandemic?

Sure, why not? This story about an Ebola-type disease ravaging the world reminds me that our current COVID-19 problem could have been much worse. A well-written, fun to read addition to the post-apocalyptic survival genre.

A virus scares our heroes

The main characrers here are funny. What I like about this book is that has a eeal world scenario as an something that the government would actually do. Read this during the covid19 pandemic.

Train wreck

Okay, so here’s the thing, this really only deserves 2 stars. It’s a rough read. The scenes lack detail and depth. The characters are dull and basically just stick figures. The action sequences are confusing.

But, there is something here. The passion of the author comes through. The base of the story is solid. My favorite thing, though, is that the author knows how to use paragraphs! I know, right? It’s a shocker. A writer that knows the best ways to use paragraphs!

Anyway, this author is rough. He does haven’t the refined writing style of Harley Tate or Kyla Stone, but one day maybe he will.

This was a great dystopian novella to start a new series.
Great world building throughout.
Characters have been fleshed out well and look forward to seeing where the author takes them.
Plot and story line were very engaging and enjoyable.
Really look forward to more of these.
Recommend Reading.

Matt

Off to a very slow start on the action. Eventually, this group makes their way to Damien’s mothers place where all hell breaks loose. The back story is some nasty virus came to the states via China ( shocker). Anyhow, the usual suspects being the government wants to round up all the citizens under some sort of martial law. All in all looking forward to the journey with Matt, Judy and Jaime.

Excellent book. My first by this Author. The story is captivating and so possible it is scary. A virus that kills very quickly. By the time you are infected it is too late! Great plot and characters. A real page turner. The Author provided me with an ecopy in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Ryan Westfield. I enjoyed it immensely.

A virus on a loaded plane with everyone infected, but no one knows until it’s too late. People are dying everywhere,tv, internet, power off non working, who survives? Page turner read in one sitting, about 3 hrs. Could not pull myself away from it, must read story. I can’t wait until the next book from this author.

Great Start

Many writers in this genre rely heavily on facts, figures, scientific percentages, and military might. Often this is at a detriment to the story. You can count on Ryan Westfield to include just enough of those things to be plausible but not hinder the telling of the story. The story, after all, is about the people. How they act, react, and their struggle to survive.

Excellent storyline

Mr. Westfield is a very good writer with a strong plot. This first book has kept my interest well but like a certain M.K. Author there are many grammatical errors. I don’t know why that bugs me so much but it does. There is a reason why major publishing houses hire proofreaders. They don’t want anything to interrupt the flow of their stories.

Struggles

That's right all the characters in this book are struggling to survive. Trying to stay clear of the infected. Read Escape the Virus to see who be get clear of the infected.

Nothing earth shattering, but not bad

Decent editing and not too many plot holes though a lot of unexplained coincidences as plot devices to move story along. Kind of got old. Would read the next one to find out what happens.

Slow

Slow to start but picks up. The characters are a bit strange and it gets a bit ditzy in a few spots.
