The Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone #20

BBQ Delivered with Attitude

Rate this book

Can't a man just enjoy a bit of BBQ without getting into a fight?

Apparently not.

One day, James comes home and finds his pregnant wife with drawn gun, a ready knife, and an unknown assailant in their living room.

The problem is, the person in the living room is hoping the Granite Ghost will help her retrieve some valuable cargo that has gotten...lost.

Now, James has to decide if he will allow an annoying female to persuade him to go on another road trip.

Even if the road trip takes him to Texas, a state known for its brisket.

Will those who want the artifacts find out he is involved?

Fortunately, there are a lot of BBQ places between Los Angeles and Texas. It just so happens Brownstone gets a chance to stop at a few.

Not the best BBQ

Sad to say this book was a dud for me. Action and witty banter like the other books but the main plot didn’t start till almost half way into the book. On top of that the character James was helping was beyond annoying and weakly developed. I actually considered not finishing the book. At least Thomas at the end allowed me to add a star to my rating.

In my Oriceran Reading list, the book I should have been reading is book 13 of the Alison Brownstone series:'Dark Reunion'.

But, as I started to read it, I realised that there were things missing, and things added that I hadn't read about in the previous book so, on the off chance, I started the next book in the list, which is a TUMB's book, number 20!

I'm so glad I swapped them around now, as that was definitely the way to read them!

In this wonderful James Brownstone book, Shay is just a month off from having her baby. James is starting to worry, as is his norm, and so Shay tries to think of something he can do, to distract him.

But, one day, as James comes back home from an errand, he finds Shay holding a gun to a strange woman in their home. On finding out why the woman has intruded on them, James is all for turning her over to the Authorities.

But Shay knows her husband very well, & sees the stranger's story as a way to distract James for a little while, so she persuades him to travel with the woman, who calls herself Harper, in order to destroy an Oriceran War Artifact that, if left to itself, could take over Texas, then the USA, and then the World!

Their journey towards the site of the artifact, is filled with BBQ pitstops, and wrangling about Harper being a Vegan but, as their journey comes to its close, James learns much more about the threat, and how he needs to stop it before disaster hits!

This was such a fun book. Yes, it was full of serious thoughts and ideas but, at the very heart of it, it was all about family, and love, and protecting those you love, and I enjoyed every single moment that I read it.

After all, it was about James Brownstone, and everything, and every one, that had made him the man he is!

The ending few chapters were really wonderful so, if you've not read it yet, then I highly recommend that you get the whole series to read, as you're in for a real treat!

So, now I've finished this, I'll go back to reading 'Dark Reunion', in order to get Alison's points of view!

And, once I finish that, I'll catch you on the flip side, and let you know what I think about it!

another winner, bbq and all!

Love to see James dealing with everyday issues and insecurities. If course, most of us wouldn't react quite as strongly, but you never know. Brownstone and What with a baby...still blowing my mind in a great way!!!

Excellent!!

It took a while, but there is almost a formula in these Brownstone books. I enjoyed this one a lot. Now, stop with the stupid review and go to the next book.

Loved it

Enjoyed the birth of baby brownstone and of course there had to be drama. James saved TX and a misguided less than altruistic courier. Lots of action and fun.

It’s been awhile but the brownstones never fail

So I have been so wrapped up reading damians chronicles war of the angels etc. that the whole brownstone clan was put to the side for a min. But with out fail I was able to pick right back up where I left off seamlessly not even needing to back track at all love these characters and hope there will be more in the future about everyone including baby ( spoiler alert) Thomas the toughest toddler at preschool god help any one child parent or teacher that upsets that boy even a stray stranger that bumps into him may be in danger if the brownstones become helicopter parents anyway loved the whole stalker issue ( that ends up not but requires James to step in and help for no bounty and ends up being someone that’s from the orphanage being used to get to him. and just when you thought that was the whole rabbit hole poof there’s someone in their home- shay holding a flaming knife as well as a gun pointing at this intruder just as James gets home from helping he has to pull his gun. the cocky intruder explains why James should help her even though she’s not a good person she says not a bad one either but... so there goes James out again at shays request to resolve this issue so I could keep going but suffice to say get reading

I loved the ending of this book that was epic. It had to be the Russians. They just had to go poking around Daddy Bear and his cub. I loved how the mob bosses were like. 'Hello, Mr. Brownstone. *Listen*' *End Coversation* ' FUCK!! WHICH ONE OF YOU SOB's WENT AND TRIED TO MESS WITH MR. B's SON!!" FIND THE FUCKER AND KILL HIM!! KILL ANY ONE WHO EVEN JOKES ABOUT MESSING WITH HIS KID! WE DON'T NEED THIS TROUBLE!.

This book was epic. I am kind of curious to see if there will be a series about the son. We had a story about Allison and one for Shay now we just need a story for Thomas and we will be all set.

BBQ and Mayhem!

Another great book in the Brownstone series! It's amazing that people just don't get all JB wants us for he and his family to be left alone. Arrogant wizards, power hungry families with more money than sense continue to plague HAs attempts at a quiet life. Once again mayhem ensues as JB provides rescues for his friend, breakdowns for those that mess with them and magic destruction factories! I totally enjoyed this latest book while watching my smoker and turning out a great brisket. All that's left is to make my Tomatillo salsa. Enjoy the book I know I did!

Totally made me happy!

Eventually, I plan to buy all of the omnibus books in the series. I adore and can see myself reading it.
This book with me so happy. It was wonderful to read it ending. I hope to see more of James and Shay. I really love all of these characters. I’m not a big barbecue fan, sorry everyone, I prefer Mike barbecue with a dry rub. That’s the best way in my opinion. I don’t like the stickiness of sauce.
This book was absolutely wonderful from the first word to the last. Thank you so much Michael for all of these wonderful stories.

Excellent story!

Really enjoyed the whole story! Especially the focus on bbq! Yet when James and Harper are eating their first meal on the roadtrip James takes a bite of his serving of ribs and is glad they are from a normal cow not a pineapple flavored one. It's good for the story however bbq ribs are from pigs not cows. Cow ribs are humungous 2" wide flat things that don't have anywhere near the deliciousness of bbq pork ribs. Was this a brain f--t or was there a bbq revolution I missed somehow?

I adore Mr. Brownstone

He's back and about to become a new dad. I was so excited to see another Unbelievable Mr. Brownstone book I devoured it. James is just so genuine. What he says is what he means, he hasn't adhered to his KISS philosophy in years and he's much happier for it. He still kicks major butt and no one in the universe better mess with his family, his friends, his church or his barbeque. Another great Brownstone book.

A Romp Through BBQ To Save Texas

It's been a while since Brownstone semi retired. Some judgementally challenged criminals think that they have a chance to take him down. Will he be back in time from his mission to protect the world in time to be with Shay for his child's birth? I like the action, snarky humor, and love. This has been one of my favorite series. I look forward to the next book.

Three stories in one

Each brownstone book normally has some background, some BBQ, a major bust up, some more BBQ, and a tie up.
This one has three storyline's, an unscheduled road trip with you guessed it, BBQ coming & going and a great ending with the usual brownstone caveat, you don't frak (sorry battlestar) with a brownstone.

Brownstone is always a fun read

Another great Brownstone story. In spite of promise of no road trip before the baby is born James gets entangled in another to destroy misplaced and very dangerous artifact. Lots of mayhem later James barely made it home in time for the birth. It's of fun..

James is *not* happy!

All he wants is a KISS life with Shay, Alison, soon to be born baby, Thomas, and BBQ. But fate seems to be conspiring against him. As always, there is humour, a new idiot to challenge him, snark, hilarity as James vents, and a lot of fun for the reader.

PS: If you haven’t already been doing so, you *MUST* read the author notes! Lawn fairies are vicious......

Bar-B-Que Meets Vegan

A lot of nice touches of humor while once again saving the world. Being so close on this road trip demonstrates that what Allison saw way back is that James is, at heart, genuinely a good person. The strength of his example is so undeniable that a probably bad young girl actually has a change of heart.

Wow the 20th Book as Fantastic as the rest

I can’t believe that this is the 20th book in the Brownstone series. What a great series all 20 of these books got a 5 star rating from me. Even after 20 books I can’t wait for more.

Great reading

Change of direction with more twists and turns. It was great to have the family together again. The characters were given more depth to their personalities. I enjoyed it. I recommend it for all that like a good adventure.

Road Trip. With BBQ!

No spoilers, but this was a kick ass book! James continues to try to live by the KISS theory, but something always interferes. Luckily he gets to enjoy some good BBQ along the way. This book is a culmination of many things. You do not want to miss it!

Frickin Awesome

Love always returning to my Mr Brownstone. Just wish there was a numerical or chronological way to keep the 3 or so series in order so as to not give away parts and pieces by accident.

A Brownstone legacy

Anderle delivers again. An alien with a heart finds love with assassin. Ass kickings given freely. With a touch of humor, a dash of snark, and a new born. It just doesn’t get better!!!
