WISE, WITTY, AND RELENTLESSLY REAL STRAIGHT TALK FROM A RECOVERING ADDICT

As Billy Manas can attest, getting sober is easy compared to living sober. But if he can do it, so can you, and he’s going to help you with nuts-and bolts suggestions for finding financial, personal, and emotional well-being to live your own version of a kickass life. Billy’s techniques for getting there are simple yet profound — tackling manageable goals, finding inspiration (in whatever way works for you), asking for help (even when you don’t want to), practicing gratitude and meditation (even if you think they’re silly), and steering clear of people who rain on your parade. Straightforward and doable, these strategies build confidence and build on each other until recovery means not just living but living better than ever.

Kickass Recovery: Review and Thoughts

by Billy Manas

While this is a learning topic for me, it does make sense that congratulations for someone realizing that they are an addict might be better than admonition. This small book celebrates life in a big way. The author is full of sage, thoughtful, sometimes funny but always poignant insights. A little tongue in cheek, a little sardonic, it keeps things moving along without downplaying the realities that “shit stinks”.
I am in agreement with much of what Billy Manas says in Kickass Recovery. The review will reflect that agreement. Life is like that sometimes.
We agree that writing exercises are a great idea – sometimes it is easier to say that way and you can start to be honest with yourself and others when putting pen to paper (or fingers to a keyboard). We also think that this allows the person to reflect – before they write, as they write, when they reread what they have written and sometimes they wisely decide to start over. The book helps by setting out these exercises in a structured but unforced manner.
Some other examples of sage advice:
• “Believe that you can do it.”
• “What drives all of us in this world is not intelligence but emotion.”
• “Once you have your notebook, open it up, and at the top of the first blank page, write the word ‘Why.’”
The author uses positive reinforcement and what we call the WARM: Written, Achievable, Realistic and Measurable goal system – or something pretty close to it. For example: “On the next page in your book, write My Future and, below that, describe how you see your life once you have found a way to earn twice or three times as much as you are earning now.”
That is very much a measurable goal. That is it goals or objectives…but with simple words. At this point it reminds me of our friend, Sal #RIP – he too succumbed to his addictions. Sal could have used this book. We think that future addicts can and hope that they will.
“You Have Already Decided to Change Your Life... Now Use It for Even Greater Good” – this book is full of positivity, such as this, but serious reality checks as well including the dangers of relapse.
Learnt in meeting circles that you can learn stuff from the seemingly dumbest guy in the room….really! But you have to listen with your ears and mind, or some would say: heart.
See page 64 for another example of useful practically not pie in the sky advice, which includes: “show up on time for all your appointments.”
Again the author does it with poise but without preaching. If you, or a loved one, or a member of your community have an addiction issue, we strongly recommend, and in fact urge you to consider reading and reading with an open heart to the complex challenges that this small book addresses.
Thank you Billy Manas for sharing.
