A LIFETIME OF LIES, AND A TRUTH TOO PAINFUL TO TELL
When Suzanna Duff was ten years old, she lost her mama, and that’s when the lies began. At first, they were just harmless little fibs, a way to hide her unbearable loneliness and the truth about a daddy who came home rip-roaring drunk every night. But in time, the lies grew bigger and now, when she is a grown woman with a daughter of her own, they threaten to destroy everything she loves.
The irony of this situation is that Suzanna never planned to stay in Georgia, she was simply passing through, looking for a fresh start in New Jersey. Attending that wake with her daughter Annie, was a fluke. An opportunity to enjoy a free meal. It should have entailed nothing more than a solemn nod and a brief expression of sympathy but, Ida Parker, the grieving widow mistook her for her the granddaughter who was carried off as an infant. Too embarrassed to do anything else, Suzanna played along. What harm was there in pretending to be someone else for a few hours? Hours turned into days and days into weeks; strangers became friends, love happened, and before long a year had flown by.
Now the past is standing on her doorstep and Suzanna must decide to leave here and disappear as she has done before, or tell the truth and break the hearts of those she loves most.

It is the wit and wisdom of that Southern Mama Crosby brings to her works of fiction; the result is a delightful blend of humor, mystery and romance along with a cast of quirky charters who will steal your heart away. Her work was first recognized in 2006 when she received The National League of American Pen Women Award for a then unpublished manuscript. "There's all kinds of families, Darla Jean. Some people are born into belonging to one another, and that's their family. But there's another kind of family, one created by people who love each other and are willing to hold onto what they've found. We're that kind of family."
Leaving an abusive relationship, Suzanne Duff and her daughter, Annie were just passing through Georgia. On their way to New York, they had to wait just one day, but they were both hungry and their stomachs led them to a wake where a chance encounter with Ida Parker changed all their lives forever. When Ida mistakenly takes Suzanne for her long-lost granddaughter, Suzanne plays along never knowing where one simple mistake and a lie would lead.
I have read quite a few Bette Lee Crosby books and I have enjoyed every single one. Her books are full of Southern Charm, wisdom, a sense of family and characters striving to do the best they can with what they have. She is a gifted storyteller who relies on the strength of her storytelling and not on cheap gimmicks, twists from out of left field. There are never any gratuitous scenes in her books or excessive language making them appealing to a wide array of readers. Her characters deal with real life issues and her story lines are reverent, believable, and never feel rushed. Her main characters are likable, endearing and charming.
"I'd love you just the same regardless of what your call yourself. I love you because of the kind of person you are, not because of your name."
This book deals with several issues but it all comes down to family as it does in many of Crosby's books. If you are not familiar with this Author, you should be. Her books are uplifting, deal with reverent issues, have wit, wisdom, kindness, and charm. Her characters are striving for better and learn important life lessons. This is a feel-good book which was much appreciated.
I couldn't help but be moved by this charming tale. I'll say it again, if you haven't read Bette Lee Crosby, what are you waiting for?

EXCERPT: As Susanna lay in bed waiting for sleep to come, she thought back on the evening and all the promise that lay ahead. She hadn't come to Cousins intending to live a lie but it had happened, and now that lie was turning into reality. She could almost believe her past was truly buried and forgotten. She'd left no evidence behind, taken a few dollars and nothing else. There was no trail for Earl to follow. She closed her eyes for a moment, picturing Earl and the dingy little house on Shady Creek Road, but this time they appeared at a distance, further away than she remembered, surrounded by dark pines and shadows that obscured the ugliness of what she'd known.
She breathed a sigh and relaxed into the pillow, assuring herself that Susanna Duff was actually disappearing. She was a woman who had simply rolled away like a lost marble. Gone. Completely and forever.

MY THOUGHTS: A Million Little Lies is my first ever Bette Lee Crosby book and I enjoyed it. The characters are warm and homely, people who may be struggling but are doing the best that they can with what they have. That's not to say that there aren't some thoroughly unlikable ones amongst them - there are. Like Bobby. I can see why he would have appealed to a teenaged Susanna, but as an adult, a mother? Susanna, what were you thinking? But then I guess that the reader has the advantage of seeing things that Susanna can't possibly know.
This is one of those warm-hearted, feel good stories with a few little twists to keep the reader on their toes. It's simple, sweet, charming and very Southern. I could hear that drawl in every word I read.
While I don't know that this story is entirely believable, it is extremely entertaining. This won't be the last book that I read by this author.
😍😍😍😍

Finding a grandmother by accident, but having to tell lies about how she is related to Ida was something (Suzanna) Darla Jean didn't want to do, but it was necessary.
Darla Jean had to keep up the charade for her daughter Annie's sake.
Annie fell in love with Grandma Ida the minute she saw her, and Grandma Ida knew that her husband had sent their granddaughter Darla Jean back to her after he passed.
A MILLION LITTLE LIES is another beautiful, heartwarming book by master storyteller, Bette Lee Crosby.
You will LOVE each and every character and hope for the best. The only one you will wish away is Earl.
I didn't want to stop reading or stop being part of the lives of each character.
What else can a reader say about Bette Lee Crosby’s books, except you need to read every one of them.
Bette's books make your heart lighter and have you joining in the joy as well as the sorrows of the characters.
LOVED it….be sure to have tissues ready, but for happy tears. 5/5
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Suzanna Duff and her eight-year-old daughter Annie had finally escaped Earl and the harsh life they’d been living. Suzanna’s life had been a hard one since her mama died when she was ten years old and her daddy – drunk and abusive – didn’t want her. Now, hitching a ride with a trucker, they were heading to New Jersey. But when the trucker let her off in Cousins, Georgia, the bus to New Jersey didn’t go until the following day. A note on a wall saw Suzanna and Annie head to a wake where there was free food; Suzanna reasoned the meal, then sleeping in the park would be all they’d need to do before catching the bus next morning.
The elderly Ida Parker was mourning the loss of her husband William. Their marriage had been a close one and now Ida was alone, she had no idea how she would manage without her Bill. When Ida saw Suzanna, she welcomed her as her long-lost granddaughter, Darla Jean. Ida was happy her granddaughter and great granddaughter had returned to her life, and just knew Bill must have sent them. Suzanna thought a couple of days with Ida couldn’t hurt, then they’d board that bus to New Jersey…
Settling into life with Ida, Annie loved her great grandma and Suzanna soon grew to love her as well. She had feelings of guilt at the lies she’d told and tried to make things right. But it was when the past reared its ugly head that Suzanna was stuck at a crossroad. What was she to do? Annie loved her life and truth be told, so did Suzanna. But some hurting was to come…
A Million Little Lies by Bette Lee Crosby is another wonderful read by an author who never disappoints. Good, strong characters – I especially loved Ida and Annie – with the usual southern charm, flicker of romance and powerful family dynamics, the issue of trust, love, lies and second chances flows through the story. A great read which I highly recommend.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Four and a half stars. It’s no secret Bette Lee Crosby is one of my favourite authors and this book is another example of why. In it she has crafted a poignant story centred around Suzanna Duffy. At ten year old her mum died which is when Suzanna’s web of lies began. Now as a mother to her seven year old daughter Annie, Suzanna finds her life changed by a case of mistaken identity. What would it hurt if she played along for a little while? But then she never expected anyone like Ida Parker to come into her life. Will Suzanna keep up the presence? Will her past catch up with her? Will her million lies come tumbling down around her shattering several lives? And what of the man she has run from who is determined to find Suzanna? Ida is a beautiful person and young Annie is a delight. Suzanna has had a hard life and made unwise choices. Despite her mistakes, it is easy to sympathise with her. Beautifully written this book had me from the first page to the last, which is just about par for the course with this author. A book I just wanted to keep reading. I loved it. The sort of book that shows both the good and bad of humanity and leaves you feeling glad at the end that you read it. Another winner from this talented author who knows how to tell a captivating story,
A Million Little Lies by Bette Lee Crosby will pull at your heartstrings, so keep the tissues handy. This is not only beautifully written, but it’s a beautiful story one in which you won’t want it to end.
I have only read a couple of books by this author, but I need to read her backlist of books because I love her writing style. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and if you enjoy feel feel-good story then I highly recommend you read this book.
Thank you Netgalley and Bent Pine Publishing for providing an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Suzanna Duff escapes an abusive relationship with her daughter Annie. While waiting for a bus to take them away they end up meeting a grieving widow Ida Parker. That is when the lies began. Suzanna becomes Darla Jean and she ends up becoming too close to the widow to leave.
This was a fun easy read. A great story with fantastic characters.
Lies piling up and wanting to tell the truth but afraid. That is how Suzanna is since she was 10 years old after her mom died. Her dad would come home every night drunk. Suzanna has a daughter,Annue, and wants a better life for them. So she sneaks out one night to head to New Jersey bu stops in Georgia for a wake as there was food for them. But the grieving widow mistook her for her husband's granddaughter. Suzanna goes along with it and before she knows it they are staying in Georgia. Suzanna, Ida and Annie starting getting close and now Suzanna's past is coming to their door. I really liked these characters even though Suzanna lied you knew how she felt and she really wanted to tell the truth and she wasn't lying to get anything from Ida. I received this from NetGalley for review.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review.

Susanna Duff is on the run. With her seven year old daughter in tow, Susanna escapes her abusive boyfriend, with nothing but the shirt on her back and the vague memory of an address in New Jersey where, long ago, a friend of hers used to live. After accepting a ride from a random truck driver, Susanna and her daughter, Annie, end up in a small town in Georgia. When they stop at a convention centre in hopes of finding free food and drink, they are befriended by Ida, a lonely widow who mistakes Susanna for her granddaughter, Darla. Soon, Susanna is living in Ida’s house, and Ida has developed a fast and friendly relationship with Annie. But Susanna knows that she will eventually be found out and she has to tell Ida the truth before someone else does.
Bette Lee Crosby is the epitome of Southern Charm, her novels are delightfully romantic and uplifting, and they provide the right amount of solace and positivity that you didn’t know you were looking for. In her new novel, “A Million Little Lies”, Crosby again shows us how the love and acceptance of others can change your life.
Susanna, Ida and, of course, Annie, are charming and endearing, and their relationship together defines the idea that “family is what you make it”. The characters are well-developed, and it is not hard to fall in love with the small Southern town that houses the story.
This novel could fit into a wide array of genres; women’s fiction, romance or Southern romance, Crosby’s novel would be comfortable in any of these. The writing is easy and flows well, and of course the novel ends happily, with all the positivity you’d expect. Of course a novel in this genre has a predictable ending, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be an enjoyable ride getting there.
As she skillfully crafts the surprises of this story in her inimitable style, Bette Lee Crosby explores the meaning of family and how choice may be a defining factor. This is a quietly powerful story, of relationships, trust, truth, lies, and the possibilities of forgiveness, that builds to an unforgettable ending. A five-star read in every way.
"We tell lies when we are afraid....afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger." Tad Williams
This is the story of Suzanna Duff. I think the biggest lies we tell are the ones we tell ourselves. This is Suzanna's dilemma....the lies are easier than the truth. Another thing we are harder on ourselves about is believing in love and forgiveness. This, too, is an issue with Suzanna. Her conscience works on her and then her fears kick in. "With lies you may go ahead in the world, but you can never go back." Russian Proverb
Suzanna Duff is a young girl who has a rough way to go when her mother dies and leaves her to be raised by an uncaring, alcoholic father. To self-protect, she begins to tell little lies to make life bearable. What harm can that be? "To Suzanna her lie was not a deception but a necessary altering of the truth." Little lie upon little lie adds up and soon they become easier and easier to tell. The lies become easy to believe as truth. Her life becomes more complicated when she finds herself pregnant and her father tells her to leave. Her life is challenged as her little Annie grows and life isn't a bowl full of cherries with Earl...the guy she's been with since she left home. She has to go find a better life for Annie even if it's built upon lies. This is the beginning of a story that pulled at my emotions for Suzanna. Her character is one I felt for from the beginning. No one likes a liar but Ms. Crosby created Suzanna in such a way that I wanted to pull for her. I felt so much anxiety for her when her lies were close to being exposed. I loved this book. It's full of heart. It's full of what a family really is about. It's full of mistakes. But it's all about how love can overcome the messes that life can be. There's a surprise towards the end of the story that brought tears to my eyes. It's such a wonderful twist.
Bette Lee Crosby is a storyteller extraordinaire! When I open the pages of one of her books, I feel like we're sitting together on a cozy veranda and I'm full of anticipation for the journey I'm about to take. Her talent and gift of bringing a story to life is southern story telling charm at its best. A Million Little Lies holds all the essence of what makes Ms. Crosby one of my favorite authors to read. It's a story from her heart that tugged at mine as all her stories do. I'm so honored to have had the privilege of reading another five star plus book by this amazing author. Her stories make my life better because of the messages and hope that the words between the covers bring to me. I want to thank Ms. Crosby and Netgalley for the ARC of a touching and heartwarming story. All opinions and thoughts in this review are my heartfelt own. Five MILLION stars if I could.
A Million Little Lies is a novel by award-winning American author, Bette Lee Crosby. Suzanna Duff and her seven-year-old daughter, Annie have escaped from a toxic relationship in Florida, but in Cousins, Georgia, they face a long delay before the bus to Jersey. Suzanna hasn’t much money and Annie is hungry. There’s a memorial at the Elks Club for William Parker, so they slip in to fill their bellies before finding a spot to sleep.
The grief has hit Ida Parker hard: Bill was her everything, and now she has no family left. So it feels heaven-sent when Darla Jean walks into the memorial lunch. She hasn’t seen their granddaughter since Bill’s son Tommy took his baby away, but Bill was always sure she would return to them one day. Ida introduces Darla Jean around, and insists she and little Annie stay the night: the bus to Jersey can wait.
Suzanna can’t see the harm in indulging the old lady for one night, but doesn’t count on Annie being so thrilled to have a great Grandma, and one night extends into more, until it becomes impossible to leave without breaking hearts: Annie and Ida have bonded so tightly. So they stay. Suzanna feels guilty for lying, but soon realises that telling the truth could hurt more. But if the real Darla Jean turns up…
Crosby easily evoked her 1960 setting, and many of the characters are endearing, although Annie’s birth father does act unexpectedly towards the end. This is a sweet story of love and family and the fact that it’s somewhat predictable and feels a tiny bit contrived doesn’t diminish the reader’s enjoyment. This unbiased review is from an uncorrected proof copy provided by NetGalley and Bent Pine Publishing.
The problem with finishing a book by Bette Lee Crosby is going on to the next book. The problem is also when you think her last book was great, it has been replaced with another great story. I have never read a Crosby book I didnt love.
And so we have a story about Suzanna who has a little girl and did not have such a great life. To get away from an abusive boyfriend, she finds herself running away only to end up in a small town meeting up with a grandmother who mistakens her for her granddaughter.
And so the story goes on with Suzanna (who Ida calls Darla Jean) and her daughter, Annie going on with the lies in order for Suzanna to give her daughter a loving home and life she never had.
This story warmed my heart as Crosby's books always do, a little bit of tears, laughter, joy, romance and a lot of love. Thanks to #Netgally for this ARC and Ms Crosby for writing such a beautiful story. I will always buy her books because we all need to read about challenges that love overcomes. #fivestars
This was a light easy read and I read it in just 2 days. I enjoyed this story by Bette Lee Crosby. Should lies be told to get a better life? It sure worked here ... Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
Now I see why Bette Lee Crosby has so many devoted followers. Her writing is heartfelt and relatable, and she creates characters that tug on our heartstrings. Her characters aren’t perfect, but we love them anyway. Or maybe their imperfections are why we love them/
Suzanna Duff didn’t mean to deceive Ida. She just wanted a family and a good life for her seven-year-old daughter Annie. But one little lie led to another and another and…
When Ida Parker mistakenly assumed Suzanna was her late husband’s long-lost granddaughter Darla Jean, Suzanna did not see the harm in going along with her. It was just for one day, and then Suzanna and Annie would go on their way. But when she saw how happy Ida made Annie, she didn’t see the harm in staying a bit longer. And when she realized how happy Ida was to have Annie in her life, Suzanna thought they could stay a little longer. And so, the lies continued to build.
This is a beautiful story of women supporting each other and becoming stronger individuals because of that support. It’s a story of learning what love is. And it is a story of finding and making a family. “There’s all kinds of families…Some are born into belonging to one another…But there’s another kind of family, one created by people who love each other and are willing to hold on to what they’ve found.”
Need something to lift your spirits, make you smile, and warm your heart? Then I highly recommend this book.
Bette Lee Crosby is a treasure as are all her books! She has the extraordinary power to pull magical stories from what could have been a tragedy. A Million Little Lies is one of those stories that this author tells so well. She holds me spellbound by her words and the story she weaves. I was into this book from beginning to end!
I have known Bette for more than several years and she has yet to disappoint me! Her stories always keep me interested. This is a book that should be read at least once, maybe more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bent Pine Publishing for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
If you are looking for a good southern fiction novel, look no further than this book. I think I have read everything by this author and I have yet to be disappointed.
What happens when you start a new life based on lies? Can you keep up with the lies you have told so you don't get caught? That is what Suzanna is having to face and it doesn't help when you have a young child that doesn't understand what needs to be kept secret and what you can say to others. Add on to that the woman that has taken in her in believing that she is her granddaughter. Is it Ida's desire to not be alone that has her convinced, or is there more to the situation?
This book is set in the 1960s which allowed Suzanna to get away with more than you probably could today. No social media, no cell phones, no internet, none of the modern technology that we have today. In fact, when she gets a job there is no checking social security numbers to make sure you have the right person working for you.
As I read this book, I could feel empathy for Suzanna and what she endured when she discovered she was pregnant, the father walking out on her and not taking responsibility, the way her own father kicked her out of the house because of her situation, and ending up with someone that didn't treat her well. But I applaud her pluckiness in getting out of the situation she was in and off to find something better for her and her daughter.
Despite many positive characters in the book, it wouldn't be complete without a few antagonists. Earl and Bobby and not the kind of people you want to inhabit your life. Earl is a drunk and Bobby is something of a misogynist. Bobby doesn't hate women, he just believes no woman can resist him. Talk about your ego! But I have to give Bobby props near the end when he actually does something that benefits someone else. You'll have to read the book to find out what exactly he does right.
There is romance in this book for Suzanna which allows her to see what a real relationship should look like and how women should be treated.
This is a story that will touch your heart but might also leave you a bit nervous at times when it comes to some tense situations regarding Earl and Bobby.
The story begins with Suzanna as a young adult who has lost her mother and her father does not care for anyone but himself. Hopping out of the frying pan into the fire, Suzanna begins a relationship with Earl, who she moves on from. The journey that Suzanna takes is one of small lies and new beginnings. As old suitors look for Suzanna, she begins a new life as Darla Jean where she finds the love she seeks with an elderly woman who give her what she has always wanted, a family for herself and her daughter. But with the lies she has told......will it last and can she find her forever happiness.
This book is written with Bette Lee Crosby's signature southern flair. It is one of those books that tears at your heartstrings and has you rooting for the characters to find what they are looking for.
Every time I read one of Bette Lee Crosby's books, I wonder how she manages to give me the "feels". I am so involved in the story and how it is going to play out.
If you haven't read any of her books, you should give them a try, you will fall in love with her characters and storytelling.
The problem with lying is that you tell one, then others follow to prevent that first lie from coming out. This is what happens to Suzanne Duff. She began lying after her mother dies, to cover up the miserable life she has with her father and the lies become bigger as she grows. As usual, Bettie Lee Crosby can create a tale that journeys through loss, heartache, struggle, a search for stability and love, and come out of it with opportunities, friendships, security, trust and love. You will follow Suzanne’s journey from unwed mother, a disappointing relationship, a flight to save herself and Annie. Using her skill for lying, she finds the perfect life, only to have it put in jeopardy, when her past comes back to threaten her security. A beautiful ending, as Suzanne finds that love, forgiveness and truth, are much better ingredients for a happy life. My thanks to #NetGalley and Bent Pine Publishing for the ARC. All opinions are my own. I loved this story and guarantee it’s a 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One innocent fib turns into a long list of lies in A Million Little Lies. Like in real life, one lie often leads to many more to cover up the truth. This story starts with a lie of omission when Suzanna lets Ida assume she is someone she isn't, leading them to forge a relationship based on lies.
Overall, this was a light quick read, with short chapters, which I prefer. I often find myself with just little pockets of time, and find it easier to pick up a book with easy stopping points.
I enjoyed watching the relationship form between Suzanna, her daughter Annie, and Ida. Although this book is on the lighter side, I was still immersed in the story and very much cared about the characters. This book made me think a lot about relationships and how family bonds, and connections of blood relatives, help us form relationships that may not flourish otherwise. I think humanity would benefit by us all treating others as family, strengthening our ties and increasing connection.
Thank you Bent Pine Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I am thrilled to be introduced to Bette Lee Crosby as an author and will definitely read more of her books.
A Million Little Lies by Bette Lee Crosby is a heartwarming story. It takes readers back to 1960 in a small Georgia town. I thought A Million Little Lies was well-written with realistic characters. The characters have their good points and their foibles. Suzanna told her first lie when she was ten years old. It was just a white lie, but it was the beginning. Suzanna and her daughter, Annie were living with Earl until he went too far one night while drunk. She wants a better life for her child and Earl was not setting a good example. Thanks to a kindly man, the pair end up in Cousins, Georgia. Ida Parker had taken care of her husband for the last two years while the cancer took away the man she loved. Her husband’s son, Thomas disappeared with his wife and granddaughter when he announced he was marrying Ida. Ida misses having family. When she spots Suzanna at her husband’s memorial, she reminds Ida of her granddaughter, Darla Jean. A series of circumstances have Suzanna and Annie living with Ida. A Million Little Lies is such a cute story. It did seem that someone was watching over these three. I was drawn right into the tale and I just kept reading until I finished it. There is some foul language in the book that I wish had not been present. A Million Little Lies has Southern charm, family, and wisdom. There are good life lessons in this story with my favorite being that there is more than one type of family. A Million Little Lies is a feel-good story that lingers with you after you finish it.
Suzanna has had a tough childhood. And finding herself pregnant at school provides more challenges. When her child’s father makes it clear he isn’t interested, she leans on an older man who doesn’t give her daughter the childhood she dreamed of for her. When an opportunity to live someone else’s life presents itself, what should she do? Her daughter deserves the best, right?
I absolutely loved reading this story. It kept me constantly in suspense, wondering what was going to happen and whether Suzanna’s secret would be discovered. I was torn whether to like Suzanna’s character with all the lies she was telling, but found it hard not to!
I would definitely recommend reading this book. It’s really well written and leaves you wanting to keep reading in case something should happen.
We all always have wished at some point or another to be someone else .., well Susanna Diff does just that. She doesn’t mean to but once the lies start they keep on coming. She’s only trying to escape a bad relationship and give her daughter a real family. Susanna lies to a nice elderly lady and pretends to be her long lost granddaughter in order to give her daughter a family, but Susanna discovers so much more.. love, acceptance, kindness, strength and unconditional love. This book is true Bette Lee Crosby style, with love, grace and style on every page ! As a huge fan of this author I loved this book !
Bette Lee Crosby always tells a good story that usually has a moral to it. Suzanne has always had trouble with telling the truth, but this time she's not sure how to get out of it. She's a single mom with a six year old daughter, and this new situation is a good one for both of them. But it's based on a lie. How can she let down all the people she's lied too? This is the dilemma that she finds herself in, and for now, she's got to protect the two of them The longer it goes on, the more lies she has to tell, until it all threatens to fall in around her. There's a couple of bad guys in this story. And a really sweet grandma. There's even a new guy in the picture, but she can't tell him the truth, can she? Not if she wants the future he may be willing to offer. Assuming that's the future she really wants too. Once again, Ms. Crosby has us on the edge of our seats as she weaves her story first through this twist and then through that one. I gave this story four stars only because I found myself wishing this protagonist was less likely to be unduly swayed by the circumstances in her life. I would love to see her stand up for herself more and to believe in her own decisions, some of them made years ago. But this story is set in the 1950s, and women thought differently then. Overall, this is an absorbing story that will have you groaning. then cheering as you become more and more invested. Thank you to Ms. Crosby and Netgalley for the advance copy of this book.
In the weeks following her mama’s death, ten-year-old Suzanna Duff learned to lie as convincingly.
With such a start, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the story of Suzanna’s life where she dealt with her situation as best as she could, wanting to make things better for her daughter, Annie.
A Million Little Lies , My first book by author Bette Lee Crosby, it was full of Southern charm and politeness. The writing was beautiful where the author brought out the beauty and strength of the characters.
Tough circumstances were not sugar coated but empathized with, showing me Suzanna’s determination. Luck too played a hand when she escaped an abusive household just to be mistaken as a daughter of a long forgotten child and accepted by the town.
A grandmother found her life back, Suzanna found a way to live respectfully, and little Annie found peace and happiness. But there was always a snake or two in Eden. Though I wanted Suzanna to be wilful, it was nice when she stood up for herself. Some scenes might be unrealistic, but then life was different for women in 1960.
This was a beautiful story, well-etched, the snapshots of Suzanna and Annie’s lives shown in realistic circumstances along with the frialities of the human heart. The art of storytelling was embedded in this book as she went on a new start with a new name.
One of my easiest and warmest reads. Bette Lee Crosby won over my heart over a single afternoon.
Wow! This was such a clever premise for a book. Ms. Crosby definitely writes an engaging story with well-developed characters. Suzanna/Darla Jean finds herself entrenched in a series of lies and it all started with one seemingly innocent fib. Unfortunately everything snowballed and one lie led to another and so on. Before she knew it, Suzanna was in so deep, she didn't know how to fix it. To complicate things further, her "grandmother" Ida is someone that she doesn't want to hurt, no matter what. Throughout the entire book, I continually wondered how Suzanna would be able to fix this. When the conclusion finally arrives, I was impressed by how gracefully Ms. Crosby resolves everything.
I would consider A Million Little Lies to be women's fiction combined with family drama. Ms. Crosby has what I would deem to be a classic style and writes an entertaining read while doing so with "clean romance." It was a storyline that was easy to fall into and invest yourself in. I couldn't wait to finish the book so I could see how it finished up. This was the first book I've read by Bette Lee Crosby and it definitely will not be my last. I look forward to reading some of the books she's previously written as well as future books down the road.
Thank you to NetGalley, Bent Pine Publishing and Ms. Crosby for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
WOW! I love everything about Bette Lee Crosby's new book "A Million Little Lies". Especially in these times, Bette Lee Crosby has written a novel that is "Heart wrenching and Heartwarming, a novel to satisfy your soul and leave your heart feeling happier."
Bette Lee Crosby has written a captivating, intriguing, emotional, and thought-provoking novel. The time-line for the story is set in the 1960's and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the story. This mostly takes place in Georgia. The author describes her colorful and dramatic cast of characters as complex, and complicated. Some are good-natured and likable. The southern feel and atmosphere is delightful.
Bette Lee Crosby is quite a talented and natural storyteller. I love the way she vividly describes her characters, events, scenery, and landscape. I appreciate that Bette Lee Crosby discusses the importance of family, friends, forgiveness, second chances. love and hope.
"Darla Sue" has had a difficult life, no fault of her own, and to cope started telling little lies. She is now responsible for her daughter and wants to make sure that she has a job to support her daughter Annie, and can take care of her. "Darla Sue" basically has a good heart and wants to make the people in her life happy. Her omissions of the truth and lies were her way of surviving, with really no bad intent.
According to Wikipedia, "a white lie" is a harmless or trivial lie, especially one in order to be polite or avoid hurting someone's feelings or stopping them from being upset from the truth."
Circumstances bring "Darla Sue" and Annie with an older woman Ida, and wonderful home. Yet circumstances might occur that take it away and reveal the secrets and lies.
I have recommended this amazing and memorable story to several friends to get from NetGalley since it is the perfect book to read during our quarantine. I also highly recommend this novel to all readers. Bette Lee Crosby has me laughing and crying at the same time. Happy Reading!!!
Wow! Such wonderful and heartwarming book. Bette writes such brilliant stories that highlight the strengths of women and how they come together to support each other. I absolutely loved this book, I found the men’s chapters were so important to the storyline as they embellished the story so wonderfully by adding in another layer to the book . I must admit I did feel stressed and nervous when reading their chapters, but only because I had so taken Suzanna into my heart and wanted her not to be hurt by either of the men that had let her down so badly. At first you are concerned, the lie becomes bigger and bigger, but because Bette writes so well about emotions you feel yourself urging on Suzanna to continue with her new life and role. I love how Bette has included one of my favourite movies, Miracle on 34th street which has the best line, “A lie that draws a smile or a truth that draws a tear.” Which completely summed up the theme of this beautiful story perfectly. Another heartwarming book that totally stole my heart. The story does contain some very difficult subjects, but these are dealt with in such an understanding manner, as Bette really knows how to get her readers emotionally involved with all of her amazing characters. A gorgeous book that I adored reading from cover to cover ❤️
Bette Lee Crosby is one of those authors who writes books that you know you're going to love even before you read the first page. Her characters are always well written and they all change and grow throughout the story. The plot is a feel-good story but there is always some laughter and tears - not sad tears but happy tears. I've read most of her books and A Million Little Lies is my new favorite.
This story is lovely - the relationship between Ida and Suzanna and Annie is so sweet and they really depend on each other. There is a lot of tension around whether Suzanna will tell the truth or continue her lie - whether she will disappear as she has in the past or tell the truth and accept the consequences. Both Ida and Suzanna are well written characters and I was hoping for the best in their relationship. They will tug at your heart and I promise, there will be happy tears as they both learn that family isn't just what you've been born into but more importantly, it is made up of people you love that you want to spend time with. Thank you Better Lee Crosby for another book with characters that I won't soon forget.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.
