Two wrongs don’t make a right . . . except when they do.
For con artist Chaney Rose, life hasn’t been easy. In desperate need of cash, she readily accepts a gig from an unethical attorney to recover Mischief, a stolen racehorse. Hunting for clues, she breaks into the suspected thief’s home only to be caught—with a few pilfered items in her pockets—by the police detective who’s tailing her.
By-the-book Adam Thorne was fired from his church ministry because of his father’s involvement with the valuable racehorse. He arrives home to find a detective arresting the young woman who broke into his house. In a burst of Les Miserables-inspired charity, he claims he gave Chaney the stolen items.
Adam needs Chaney’s help to find his father who has disappeared along with Mischief. But when Chaney learns that Mischief’s owner intends to kill the horse, she needs Adam’s help to expose the cruel plan before it’s too late.
Can a con artist with a conscience and a minister without a ministry team up to do the wrong thing for the right reason?

This was an interesting story! I didn't know quite what to expect since I haven't read this author before, and I was pleasantly surprised. The character development was great, and the plot was exciting. The only thing I missed was a romantic thread and a spiritual thread. Adam sees Chaney as a younger sister, but because she's portrayed as only a few years younger than him, I was waiting for a romance to develop, which never did. They had a genuine friendship though, and Adam feels protective of street-smart Chaney who allows her vulnerability to peek through. Adam shows her how compassionate and kindness are not weaknesses but admirable qualities. She feels guilty for her deception as they work together to solve the mystery of the missing horse, but is motivated by more than meets the eye. While about one half to two-thirds of the book is focused on discovering the hiding place of the horse and Adam's father, a big chunk is also about what happens after, with plenty of twists and turns. I was engaged the whole time I read and was satisfied with the ending... even though there was no kissing ;)
(I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
This is the first full-length Johnnie Alexander book I have read and I am so glad that I finally got the opportunity to read one of her books. Set in contemporary Florida among the world of thieves, scammers, and horse racing, the plot is unique and unforgettable with fun and lively characters. The writing is smooth and well-paced and every chapter had me wanting to get to know Chaney Rose and Adam Throne better. The setting is definitely contemporary but the author's voice had an old-world charm that was quite irresistible. If you enjoy fun uplifting contemporary fiction, you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
Chaney is a small time thief whose only blood relative is incarcerated because of her foolishness. Though raised in a family on the wrong side of the law, Chaney is driven by a sense of right and wrong and she's quite likable. Adam is a pastor whose life is turned upside down by a broken engagement, a pink slip from his church, and his missing father. Interesting circumstances bring them together as they try to find Adam's father who may be connected to a missing thoroughbred racehorse. There are quite a few others who have voices in this story besides Chaney and Adam which makes it somewhat confusing at first but are necessary to bring all the pieces of the story together. Adam's faith is genuine and real, even when faced with trials and uncertainties. I'm hoping to read more about Chaney and Adam since the series is entitled 'Rose & Thorne'. Though this book had no romantic thread, perhaps next installment(s) will bring some?
I received a copy of the book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
It was hard not to get captivated by this book. I read it in one sitting. The story gripped me, the characters stellar even the not so nice ones. I loved how the author wove the concept of grace into the story and how family is not just people related by blood but people who stick by and extend love and protection even when it is undeserved. I enjoyed Chaney and Adam's story. Really did!
I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
The Mischief Thief by Johnnie Alexander is a thrilling contemporary Christian suspense that will have your heart racing as you read. It is the first book in the Rose And Thorne series and part of the Mosaic Collection. The story shows that even when life throws you curve balls and spins out of control, there is One who is greater, One who is always in control. Nothing surprises Him, even when it surprises us. God gives us grace. We, in turn, need to extend grace to others. There is the theme of trust. People are not always quite as they seem. God can always be trusted. When we do not know what to do, we can turn to Him. He will give us a peace that passes understanding in spite of our circumstances. We can experience the fragrance of God in our lives if we just turn to Him and trust Him. Johnnie Alexander has created an intricate and cleverly constructed plotline. I must admit, at times my head was spinning as it twisted this way and that. I was glued and guessing throughout. Her characters were well drawn and likable. The bond between the leading two was palpable, their friendship radiated from the pages. Our past is just that, past. We cannot change it but we can learn lessons from it. No one is too far from God because of His love and grace. We just need to call out to Him. “Her heart cried for God’s help.” When we cannot find the words, God hears our heart’s cry. I really enjoyed The Mischief Thief. It was my first book by Johnnie Alexander but I shall be hunting out more. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
"The Mischief Thief" was a delight. I mostly read romance, but this book had so much mystery and heart that I found myself turning pages way into the night until I found out how it would end! I should always know that anything Johnnie Alexander writes will be in top form! Chaney and Adam are great characters, and I'm quite anxious to see where this series leads now that I know that "Rose and Thorne" ARE the characters! If you like a good mystery, check out "The Mischief Thief." You will be so glad you did!
JOHNNIE ALEXANDER creates characters you would want to meet & imagines stories you won't forget..

Even among grifters, the family loyalty and bond between Chaney and her cousin Marshall made them appealing folks for me. Marshall is in deep trouble because he took a bigger chance to protect Chaney from bigger trouble. They've stuck together through thick and thin. Marshall is one of few who know some of the foibles and fears that haunt Chaney.
Adam Thorne has a struggle to keep his faith strong when he's taken a serious personal 'hit' almost every day for the past few weeks. Nothing dangerous except for his self-balance. He and Dad manage to get their relationship back in line with their convictions through their 'Chaney experiences.'
The writing reveals the bad guys without making them caricatures. Yet, manages to keep a fast moving suspense story free of profanity, vulgarity and smut!
I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet, funny story with deeper spiritual truths woven throughout. The strength of this book is in the relationships - between Chaney and Agent Grant, Chaney and her cousin Marshall (don't we all need a Marshall in our lives??) and Chaney and Adam. Adam's questioning of God's plans when he is unexpectedly fired from the ministry job he loved is authentic and relatable, and the life-changing grace he extends to Chaney is inspiring. This book will not only amuse and entertain, it will keep you thinking about the characters and their faith journey long after you have turned the final page.
This book is so good! It hooks you on the first page and doesn't let go, I read it in one sitting. It has just the right amount of drama to keep you turning the pages. I loved how the author wove God's grace and forgiveness into the story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
This new to me author has done a marvelous job with this heart stopping read that will have you on the edge of your seat as Adam and Chaney solve the whodunit mystery. I think the ending will surprise you. It did me. Alexander has a gift to weave God's grace and forgiveness into this beautiful story. To me, this is what made the story special. I really enjoyed getting to know Adam and Chaney so much that I didn't want to say goodbye! Even the bad guys are awesome! I highly recommend this book! You'll not be able to put it down one you start this book. My thanks to Just Reads tours for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review for this book. All opinions are my own.
I loved the television show Leverage and as I was reading Johnnie Alexander’s The Mischief Thief, I kept thinking of the show. Well, come to find out in the author’s not, Alexander is a fan of the show too.
This book is interesting in that it’s a mystery with a main character who is a grifter. Although Chaney has a conscience about her thieving, it is the way of life she has always know. Alexander creates a character who is both a bit immoral but also vulnerable which makes her likable.
While I was waiting for some romantic chemistry to happen between her and Adam, it never came. But the grace Adam shows Chaney is what she needs in her life. She needs someone to show her the love of God and the fallible love of humans.
Since The Mischief Thief looks like the first book in a series, I’m hoping we get to catch up with Chaney and Adam again soon.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this story, but I found the premise interesting so I had to check it out. I was under the impression that this was a Christian suspense. I wouldn’t classify it as such. There was definitely an inspirational thread to it, but I found it to be more of a fun mystery rather than suspenseful. I very much enjoyed the writing which kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen. I love the TV show Leverage and the second half of this story reminded me of that show. The one complaint I did have was when the story came to the end, I was left saying, “What? That’s it?” The end was tied up for the story as far as getting the horse to safety, but I wasn’t done with the characters. Full review is at my author website.
I received this book complimentary as a participant in the JustRead reviewer tour. I was not required to give a positive review. All the opinions expressed here are honest and my own.
I read a LOT of Christian suspense books...and while I would say this one certainly fits the genre, it certainly is unlike others I have read. Rather than a murder mystery, this one draws us into the world of horse thievery and general grifting... and where the bad guys are typically very clear, this one blurs the lines a little bit more. Oh sure, there's definitely an obvious bad guys... but then the good guys might be a little questionable in their techniques as well. Though I cannot give too much away, that certainly does read to a rather unique and intriguing story!
At first I admit that it took me some time to get into this story. There were several characters introduced from the start and it took me a bit to sort out who was who and how they all fit together into the story... though the story was intriguing even from the start, it took me about halfway through the book to really get into it... though admittedly, that could have just been the busy-ness of life right now getting in the way as well. Once I really sat down and dug in, I really enjoyed getting to know this unique cast of characters. As I said, sometimes the lines seemed a bit blurred, so it was interesting trying to figure out who could be trusted. This is fitting considering trust is a big theme throughout this story. Another big theme was grace. Grace is easy to talk about, but harder to give. When they meet Adam offers grace to Chaney without knowing her story... and oh what a difference that can make in a person's life. I think oftentimes when we know someone's story, it is easier to give grace... and I do believe the story showed this well.
This is the first book in the author's Rose & Thorne series. Despite my initial hesitations, I do find myself looking forward to reading more from the series. It is also part of the Mosaic Collection and a great addition at that. I enjoyed it, and think fans of Christian suspense will as well... I think those who are interested in horses will appreciate this story even more!
**I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.
Being a con artist comes natural to Chaney because she is so use to doing this, but she also has a heart, and feels guilty, and you just have to fall in love with her. And she fits so well with Adam. I love these two characters, with lives that are so different, yet are so good together. I love that Adam is so caring and shows God's love and forgiveness to Chaney, instead of condemning her for her lifestyle. If only we could all be like him.
This is a different take on a story for Ms. Alexander from her Misty Willow series, which I love so much!!! This is her first time writing a suspense story, and I am so happy I was able to read this book with the Just Read Book Tours. And this is a story about horses. I love horses but don't read a lot of books about them. I was hooked from the first page of The Mischief Thief, and though I had to read it over a couple of days, I really didnt want to take that much time. This book proves that Johnnie Alexander is an awesome author, no matter what genre she writes. I loved seeing the Johnnie Alexander writing style while reading this book that I know and love from her other books. It is just with this one, there are so many twists and turns to make this one an amazing clean, Christian suspense that anyone can enjoy reading. And I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves good clean books and loves a good suspenseful read. And if you love horses, you will like this one too! It sounds like this is Book one in a series, and I sure hope it is because I would love hearing more from Adam and Chaney! We need some romance going on!!

What a wonderful story! We all have them. Life circumstances that we never thought we’d have to face. Perhaps not so overt or drastic as to steal to keep from going hungry. Perhaps more subtle, more “excusable,” more hidden. Sometimes, though, it’s simply all we have ever known. Like Chaney Rose. And sometimes, we think we’re above all that. Like Adam Thorne. After all, he was a minister. A man of God. How would he have undesirable character traits? Ms. Alexander poses not only these questions, but she mixes the two—Chaney and Adam—in a tale of mixed emotions. And perhaps some mixed ethics. Iron sharpens iron as circumstance repeatedly throws Chaney and Adam together, smoothing the rough edges of their initial meeting. A peculiar mix of near childlike guile and innocence and a sharp wit and cunning mind, Chaney rambles through her life, and into Adam’s. With no real conviction, save for concern for others—and especially for Mischief—the niggling guilt of her lifestyle and profession press against her. The kindness—the Les Miserable twist—that Adam shows her imprints on her heart, begging questions she’d not dared ask before. Ms. Alexander builds the adventure, teasing the reader with every word, every page, pushing to the end, and [SPOILER] outcome.

I have been devouring mystery and suspense novels lately and The Mischief Thief is another suspense that grabbed ahold of me and didn't let go! If life wasn't so crazy for me right now I'm sure I would've finished this novel in one sitting, but even having to pick it up and put it down I could immediately get right back into the story and get lost in this world.
Chaney is a grifter that you can't help but fall in love with. Pair her with Adam, the ex-pastor with a heart overflowing with grace and forgiveness, and the theft of a prominent race horse, and you've got one story that truly has it all. The character development is unparalleled and so true to life...if only more people extended grace like Adam does to Chaney, and his father.
The writing is wonderful, the plot keeps your attention, and you can't help but continually turn the pages to find out what happens next. Plus, how can you not love a good suspense story involving a horse, am I right? You hate the bad guys and love the good guys, and the ending wasn't exactly what I had expected, which was a pleasant surprise. I actually told my husband when I read the last sentence, "Aww! What a cute way to end the book!"
Another wonderful addition to The Mosaic Collection, as well as kick off the new series "Rose & Thorne". I can't wait to see what other adventures awaits Adam and Chaney!
*I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author and/or publisher through JustRead Tours. All views and opinions are completely honest, and my own.
This was such a fun novel and was just what I needed right now. What happens when a grifter connects with a pastor to find a horse? I loved the characters of Adam and Chaney. I loved that this story was not a romance, but rather a tale of friendship and trust and basic human relationship. I enjoyed the character growth. The story line and wanting to know what happens next kept me turning pages. This book had a little bit of everything and I just adored it! This was my first book by Johnnie Alexander, but definitely won't be my last!
I thoroughly enjoyed this entertaining story involving the disappearance of a race horse, a veterinarian, and a mobster’s wife (an unlikely combination). The well-crafted plot moves at a steady pace with twists and turns that heighten the suspense and hold your interest. The characters are well-developed and believable. The faith element is skillfully infused into the narrative. Detailed descriptions and anecdotes on Florida history add to the enjoyment of the adventure. I recommend this first book in Ms. Alexander’s Rose and Thorne series and look forward to the second book in the series.
I was given an advanced copy of this book with no obligation to post a positive review. All thoughts and comments are my own.
A very cute story of trying to save a horse name named Mischief. I love Chaney and Adam and how they get together to find who stole Mischief. Adam is a minister and Chaney is a con artist. I enjoyed their story and loved how they were protecting the horse from the bad guys. I definitely recommend reading this book, such a fun book.
What a fun read. I liked the nod to Les Miserables in the book blurb which sealed the deal for me reading it as I’m an avid fan of the classics. Also, I thought the storyline sounded fun. The character quickly worked their way into my heart and I had to find out what would happen.
This is book one in a series to come and I can’t wait to pick up the next book. Our two main characters are pretty much polar opposites but a chance encounter and grace extended mean that they are bonded together. As they search to solve a mystery the bond between them grows. Adam’s faith is astounding throughout the book and I loved seeing his character deepen and grow alongside Chaney.
The author does a wonderful job reeling you in and then hooking you with characters that won’t let you leave. Can’t wait for the second book. Highly recommend.

Took me a bit to get into it for some reason but turned out to be a fun book to read with interesting twists and turns. Anxious to read the next book when it comes out to read more about Chaney and Adam.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, but let me tell you, I loved every minute of it! This is my first book by Johnnie and definitely won't be my last! The message behind this story was beautiful. A story of second chances, grace, forgiveness. I loved seeing the character growth in Chaney! And the testimony Adam gave her just by living was inspiring. He didn't let circumstances get him down, or make him an angry bitter person. He just gave it all to God and continued living a life that showed God's goodness, a smile on his face. This is a story that definitely kept you hooked from cover to cover, trying to figure out what was going to happen next. The characters were engaging and made you feel the story right along with them. I can't wait for Johnnie's next story!
I received this book for an honest review, all opinions are my own.
What a fun book – characters I immediately liked, an intriguing storyline, with a little dash of romance thrown in, all making for a great read I didn’t want to put down! Chaney is a grifter, having been trained at an early age in the con business by her grandfather. But a grifter with a conscience and staunch family loyalty? That combination puts her in some precarious situations. Add in a pastor who has just been let go from his job, a veterinarian, the wife of a rich mobster, and some ne’er-do-wells, and you’ve got a pageturner! This is book 1 in the Rose & Thorne Series and I can’t wait to read the next one!
I received a copy of this book from JustRead Tours and was under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I love that this story is a combination of Leverage and Les Miserables, since I enjoy both! Johnnie does an excellent job of writing characters that leap off the pages and make you root for them. I especially appreciated Adam and his love for the Lord through thick and thin. Chaney and Adam are an unlikely duo, but I loved that! This is a wonderful story to pick up. I look forward to the next book in the series! I received this book from Just Read. This is my honest review.
I loved the story! A "no account" grifter with a heart of gold! Amazing story of love, friendship, betrayal and faith in God! The love of money making people make bad decisions no matter who gets hurt! The love and grace of God standing tall! When Chaney tries to help her cousin out of jail the whole world turns wrong when she trusted someone(s) she shouldn't have! Luckily she had people on her side who believed in her and cared enough for her to help her, no matter what her life looked like to an outsider, and outsiders they were...for a time... Can't wait for book 2!!
Chaney Rose never expected to shake the world. Yet she did just that. Shook the world of a calloused police detective. Of an out-of-work minister. Of a wannabe mobster. She was an enigma, with street smarts and compassion. With a moral compass slightly skewed and yet was there. Her grandfather had a tremendous influence on her motivations and actions.
Adam's life over the past few weeks had been one disappointing shock after another. Despite the tumult, he still found it in his heart to respond to the call of God to forgive. To show grace and mercy to the young woman caught red-handed with the contents of his safe. Chaney continued to confound him. As he entered her world, he saw not only a girl who had lived on the streets and could pick the pockets of a pickpocket but also the girl who would do anything to rescue her cousin.
I loved the insight into Chaney's thoughts and motivations. Despite the things she did, I could see how she thought they were the right things to do. It is strange to think of someone who grew up in a family where everyone was a grifter!
Full of suspense and surprises, this first book in the Rose & Thorne series was wonderful! While Mischief's situation was resolved, plenty of loose ends await resolution in future stories of the series. I can't wait to read more!
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
The Mischief Thief, by Johnnie Alexander, is a fun story of mystery and slight of hand. Chaney Rose is a conartist determined to get her brother out of jail. Adam Thorne is a minister who lost his job. When Chaney is hired to find a horse and Adam wants to find his missing father, they decide to team up since it seems their searches dovetail with the other.
The pacing of the story is great. It draws you in while also providing the necessary detail. I really liked both Chaney and Adam. They were perfect blends of spunk to vulnerable, gracious to stalwart. My only wish is that there was more obvious romance, but that's the romantic side of me. And, without giving anything away, the last line in the book is my favorite.
I'm really hoping there will be a book two so we can see Adam and Chaney in action again. There were several loose threads at the end of The Mischief Thief that I would love to see resolved. In the meantime, if you're looking for a good mystery with fun characters, pick up a copy of The Mischief Thief.
