The List is such an amazing story! I have always enjoyed Biblical fiction and yet read it so carefully to make sure there are no flagrant errors in doctrine. And there are some of the more well-known Biblical figures that worry me a little to read about, in case they are not represented well. You know what I mean?
First of all, I want to mention that I love the fact that every word spoken by Jesus in this story comes straight from the Bible. So there is no room for false doctrine to be slipped in. I felt that he was characterized so beautifully and respectfully. Reading this story had me falling in love with him a little more!
While certainly the central theme, Jesus is not the central character. In fact, I enjoyed the clever way the authors had the disciples speaking for Jesus when he would have said something outside of scripture.
The details of the story made the Bible come to life in a whole new way. As I read of Joseph entering the Temple area to the sound of the instruments and the voices of the Levitical singers, I experienced it in a manner I hadn’t before. Somehow, in my musings, I had neglected to include these sounds.
Filled with witty banter, icy confrontations, confusion over who Jesus really is, The List presented details clearly without at all feeling unnatural. As Joseph and Nicodemus searched the scriptures to see if Jesus could possibly be the Messiah, their discussions showed the evidences from the Old Testament clearly and cleverly.
I feel like I could go on and on, gushing about this fantastic story. But I won’t. I will mention the one little thing that caused me to dock a star – but considering that I would have given it six, it still leaves it with a great rating. There is a point when Joseph’s father-in-law confronts Joseph’s wife and tells her why he has always resented her. Essentially, it is because she is not a son but he described it as her lacking a particular anatomical part.
I have a few people in mind that I will suggest read The List to enhance their understanding of Jesus and the culture and events surrounding his ministry. If you enjoy well-written fiction, want to have the Bible come more to life, and desire to see more how much Jesus loves you, I recommend you read it, too.
A really interesting look at the ministry of Jesus. The story revolves around the friendship between Nicodemus and Joseph of Arametha as Nicodemus convinces Joseph through scripture that Yesuah is the Christ. Many interesting characters, good and bad, fill the story to make it fast moving-the ending of the cruxificion is still horrifying.
The Biblical story in this book was very well known to me, so I knew how that part of the story would play out. But the story line of Joseph and his wife and Nicodemus and his wife were the main story line and that kept me guessing until the end. Through their eyes this familiar story has much more depth and emotion.
I could not put this book down. It is so well written. Even though it's a fictional account, it was completely plausible to me. It draws you in to the characters ' lives, and how life could have actually been like back then. And more importantly, it brings to life the reality of the suffering and death of Jesus so be prepared to grieve.
I read this book during the Easter season. It brought to life the culture of Jerusalem during the Roman occupation, with all of the political maneuvering of the religious leaders. Share this book with anyone doubting the reality of Jesus.
I enjoyed this story - told through the eyes of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus - of the final three years of Jesus’ life. Walking the streets of old Jerusalem, hearing about a prophet who was mesmerizing throngs with word and deed, and trying to determine whether the man is the Son of God or a fraud. The debate was difficult for many and divided families, including Joseph’s. Thought-provoking and well-written.
I loved this book. I had never really stopped and thought about the lives of the people mentioned in the Bible. Some of them like the men in this story lived their lives on the outskirts of Jesus 's life. He touched their lives in profound ways I had not considered. I look forward to meeting and talking with them sometime in the coming eternity. Thank you for this thought provoking book....looking forward to the continuation.
The List is the story of Jesus from the perspective of two disciples: Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. I was thoroughly captivated by the emotion of these two followers caught up in the discovery that prophesies about the Savior of Israel were being fulfilled - some before their very eyes. The story of their lives and families fleshed out what could have been, and added depth to the excitement about the Messiah. Accuracy of the scriptures was not sacrificed; historical state of Rome, Israel, and the life style at the time deepened my understanding of the events surrounding the coming and crucifixion of Christ.
Not only a “good read” but an important and life changing story told well.
This is a very engaging story of Jesus Christ’s life and teachings from Passover 30 A.D.-His death on the crossi ng 33 A.D. as well as the involvement of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus and others involved and witnessing the events leading up to, during and directly following Jesus’ death with more to come in the next book.
I enjoyed this book. It really gave me an insight into what was happening in bible stories of Jesus leading up to his crucifixion. It sort of brought it to life.
“The List:” Unobtrusive title but a ticking time bombproof truth upon truth, woven into the absolute best Biblical novel ever!
Bill Perkins excellent and detailed research coupled with Buck Storm’s (the master story teller) ability to create believable and compelling dialogue along with an artist’s unique ability to turn a blank canvas into 3-D scenes that captivate the reader’s eyes, will keep you turning page after page through three years of the collective lives and ministries of Joseph of Arimethema and Nicodemas and to a smaller, but no less important role, Jeshua! You’ll haves to just buy it, or down load and see for yourselves. My words will never be able to relate the hair-raising moments I experienced while reading this book. The supporting cast roles are excellent as well. Don’t miss, The List!
This was a unique work of Biblical fiction from the vantage point of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, 2 of the members of the ruling council who believed in Jesus. I enjoyed some of the fictional elements, such as Joseph being son-in-law to one of the chief priests leading the charge against Jesus and their connection to Barabbas. All of the words of Jesus were taken directly from the scripture, though there were some historical elements that I felt were a bit lacking. However, the story was good and scripturally accurate, the characters were well developed and it was overall an enjoyable piece of biblical historical fiction - a take on a person coming to faith in Christ during the time of Christ.
This is one of the best Christian fiction books I have read in a long time. It follows the lives of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Together they create a list of fulfilled prophecies which they hope will prove/disprove whether Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah. The co-authored combination of Buck Storm and Bill Perkins do an excellent job of giving the reader a flavor of what life was like in Israel under Roman occupation at the time of Christ. They did an exceptional job of detailing the tension between the people of Israel's love for Jesus and the religious leaders loathing 0f him. A must read for people of faith. Stay tuned it looks like there will be a sequel.
Excellent book. The Bible does not give us much detail on the life of Joseph of Arimathea or Nicodemus so the authors of this novel use the sparse details we have and create a remarkable friendship between the two. This friendship centers on the making a list of prophecies from the Old Testament that are fulfilled by Yeshua (Jesus), thus the title “The List”.
The authors also bring in the friendship that develops between Joseph and Nicodemus’s wives. It also presents the relationship both men had with their wives. The book ends with the crucifixion of Christ but also ties together numerous details earlier in the book.
Say the words, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and most Christians will know it's about Jesus Christ. This retelling of the Biblical account of His life and death grabs the reader and doesn't let go to the very last page. Unfortunately, it stops with Jesus death and burial...an incomplete story. Thus this reviewer really wanted to read the rest...to read about Resurrection Sunday! Otherwise, it's a really well told account. Looking forward to more!
I got this book by mistake. (a different list is on the bestseller list) And I am very happy. It was captivating and I finished in a couple of days. There is an exaggeration of events but I truly believe that the beginning of the problem and the conclusion of the problem could be real. The process is in my opinion quite dramatized. This is a good book for anyone who has an acceptance of Christ. I found it very confirming and encouraging.
I thoroughly enjoyed this depiction of life with Jesus, Beryl and Joseph. The descriptions were perfect, I have read several books of this type and have to say, this was well done. I highly recommend, I am not going to go back over what the book is about but if you enjoy reading about the disciples, Jesus teachings, the Romans and how life was before the crucifixion, this one is for you. High 5 ****’s
Down to earth life all your hard work/prestige/"possessions" and told it's worth nothing: would we recognize the messiah let alone give up all ??? A wonderful picture of life in Jerusalem 2000yrs ago tradition/so called spirituality/power .the words of Christ wrapped around real life. What would any of us today give up to follow an itenerent preacher????
This book reveals Scripture in an unusual way- in everyday life. The word pictures are stunning and breathtaking. I particularly like books that reveal the deep message of the Bible in a different form of literature. It reminds me of the Christian writings of C. S. Lewis.
This is a must-read book. It chronicles the lives of Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea during Jesus’s three years of ministry. Joseph and Nicodemus, one a Sadducee and the other a Pharisee, work to examine prophecy and see what they truly believe. Time and an evil father-In-law work against them. The ending will leave you in tears. I’m awaiting the sequel.
This was fun story about how life might have been when Jesus was alive. It makes you think where you might have been in thought and attitude had you lived during that time. It got heavy at the end, as expected, and I had to sit it down and come back to it a few times. Loved that it followed and quoted scripture but for the most part was still able to be a quick, easy read.
This was such a unique perspective on the times of Jesus! While it focuses on Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, you can also see others' struggles to decide if Jesus was truly the Messiah and what they were willing to give up once they made their decision. I am excited to read the sequel to this!!
You are brought in to walk along side Joseph of Arimathea as he comes to faith in Jesus Christ along with his growing friendship with Nicodemus. Wonderful close up look at the last weeks in the life of Jesus before the cross. Highly recommend this book!
Novel about the life of Jesus, taking place in Jerusalem, as Jesus enters the city snad spends his last days there. The story is told from the perspective of Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, two members of the Sanhedrin.
The ministry of Jesus as told by Joseph of Arimethia and Nicomedus
We usually hear this story as told by the Disciples Disciples or Gospel writers. Look at it from the other side. I found this three years of the ministry of Jesus to
I highly recommend this wonderful book. The characters were nicely written - very true to life - and the story of our Lord’s death here on earth was respectfully told. I hope they’re working on a sequel.
This book told the story of Jesus from a different perspective that brought the characters to life and made me consider how everyone has a different redemption story.
I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed reading it through another perspective (Pharisee and a Saducee). Having them put together the list of fulfilled prophecy was exciting! I loved the flesh this put on other characters surrounding Jesus.
