My review :

Will they be able to find a common ground and trust the other.

This is my first read by Lori Ann Bailey and the different time area at first unsettled me as I am more used to XIXth century tales.
Thankfully the author added a note at the end to explain the events of this period.

The main characters are both good and kind but each has its misconceptions and those create large walls between them.
Grant is a peacemaker, he resorts to force only when there is no other option. So when he realizes his bride-to-be is the one woman he despises the most for here be part of the battle which took his friend’s life. He knows he will never be able to trust her. She is too much a monster to him, so he intends a close watch on her.
It is not without counting with the scorching chemistry they instantly share.
Isobel was shame by a tragic event during her childhood, since she pushes people away, refusing to let her heart get involved. She is aware Grant has a false notion of whom she is. When he sees a bloodthirsty wench, she is an overprotective mother hen, thinking she makes amends for past failures which were not hers.

The storyline alternated between intimate moments and actions scenes. Their first scenes together were charged with anger but also lust as they shared mixed feelings. Each new step toward the other is a brick to the edifice of their newly discovered truce.
Mrs Bailey has brought to life blood and flesh characters with their flaws, uncertainties and talents. Isobel is such an intense personality, she will sacrifice herself to avoid others getting hurt. As a warrior, she is strong and assured when as a woman she crumbles under guilt, justified or not, unable to see herself truly in the mirror.
Grant is conflicted, his attraction to his newly bride disturbed his own goal. She distracts him when he should be concentrating in finding a way to peace.
While they appear opposite, the more the story progressed, the more they are in fact similar, both protecting those around from treats, each with their own Weapon.
5 stars for this moving tale of healing and having faith on the other.

A wonderful page turner!!!!
Isobel MacLean and Grant MacDonald are forced to marry in an attempt of their claims to try to prevent a war, but they enter the marriage extremely distrustful of each other. Isobel thinks he and his claim don't do enough to protect the people entrusted in their care, and Grant think she is an irresponsible hellion and blames her for awful things that happened to a person he was close to and holds a grudge because she makes him remember his most beloved uncle who was murdered too.
As time passes and they have to work together to think of ways to make peace between all and stop a dangerous villain, they began to see that what they thought of one another wasn't true and start falling in love with each other. This was an amazing story, the author's writing was great and I just couldn't put this book down. I fell in love with the couple and got to understand both points of view, and was looking forward to the solving of their problems so that they could finally have their happy ending. I received a free arc copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley and am leaving my honest review.

The beginning of the novel was very catchy. The writing style drew my attention immediately. It was enlightening to know Isobel’s story as the book progressed, gruesome as it was, and why she fought. Before then, their determination to hate each other was frustrating and sometimes, unreasonable. Some of their motives were also not so convincing. However, when they started accepting their feelings for each other it got better.

When Grant said “for once let someone shield ye”, it was all I could do not to swoon.

The book was busy with intrigue and action which was very nice. For a while I didn’t understand Isobel’s mindset concerning Torsten Campbell and thought she was being paranoid until they encountered him in the end and I realized her emotions were valid. Grant was a really nice hero too. A pleasant read.

Ever since a violent attack in the past, Isobel MacLean only trusts herself to ensure her own safety and that of her family. But she has no interest in marrying Grant MacDonald, heir to the MacDonald laird and the very man who allowed the escape of the only man able to identify Isobel as a fighter in the Royalist resistance.

Grant MacDonald has no interest in marrying the woman responsible for his friend's death, no matter how attractive she is. He's determined to tame the wild hellion he now finds himself wed to, but the more he comes to truly know his new wife, the more Grant wonders if she's just misunderstood. Either way, he's determined to keep her distracted from her mission of vengeance and keep her safe lest she destroy them both.

I loved the previous book in this series, but this one fell just a bit flat for me. I still enjoyed it and I'm glad to have read it, but these two just frustrated me to no end. The main characters were both stubborn and bound and determined to hate each other for much of the book and that lack of communication caused most of the problems they faced or at least made them worse. I found some of Isobel's, and even Grant's, motivations to be a bit half-baked and not wholly sensible at times, but it is fiction so, oh well. However, I did appreciate that the heroine was fierce and capable and the hero did finally see that and they learned to be a team in the end, which I thought was gratifying. I'll continue with this series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Scotland, 1643 "Nae, I willnae marry." Isobel MacLean reached into the folds of her skirt to find her dagger but it was not there. "Aye, ye will." Her father and Laird of the MacLean Clan started at her with determination. "Dinnae look at me like that. Tis time ye are wed." Even her mother was pushing for this arrangement. The thing was they were at the MacDonald stronghold and she did not know what had been coming! Of course Grant MacDonald was the one trying to bring peace between the two sides of Royalist and Covenanters and that made her mad. She had been fighting with the Royalists. But all her father wanted was to keep her safe and he felt this was the best choice!
"Nae" When Grant saw who his new bride was he could not believe it! She was the wench he had seen fighting and wielding a sword in battle with the Royalist. Yeah she had a lot to answer for about that!
So the adventure begins or rather journey to find if they could be happy together.
I adored these two characters and how Lori Ann Bailey developed their story with her words grabbing me and holding on. This entire series has been fantastic and I cannot say enough. Plus look at that gorgeous cover! Do not miss this one or any in this series or written by this author. I read this through NetGallery and the publisher Entangled.

This involves two very likeable people who are forced into a marriage for the good of their clans. Isobel MacLean fought with the Royalist and Grant MacDonald was all for negotiating a peace deal between the warring factions of the Royalists and the Covenanters. Due to a traumatic event in her youth, Isobel has a need to protect others. Hence, she developed her skill with her sword. Isobel and Grant have an attraction for each other and this gradually develops into something deeper. There is also a villain who is aware of Isobel’s role with the rebels and wants to capture her. There are a number of dangerous situations that had me on edge and some very passionate moments. This was a very absorbing read that moved along at a good pace and kept my interest until the end. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I give this book 4,5 stars.
I really, really liked this book. This is the first time I read a book written by Lori Ann Bailey. I loved her writing and the fact that she is so historically correct in regards to the Scottish and the English history.
This is the fifth book in a series but you can definitely read it as a stand-alone. I am definitely so happy that I gave it a chance.
Isobel is forced to marry Grant who is the heir of the Macdonald clan on the Isle of Skye so they can keep her safe from the Covenanters and Torsten Campbell.
The reason why she has to be hidden away on the Isle of Skye is that she was a part of the resistance against the Covenanters as the only woman and there is a reward out on her. In a battle two men sees who the only woman in the resistance is. Torsten Campbell wants the reward and honor of capturing her and Grant Macdonald wants her and is later forced to marry her.
In the beginning of the marriage they have a completely screwed up view on who each other are and he definitely calls her a lot of foul names because of what she has been involved in. He want a quiet and sweet wife and he doesn’t see her as that so he tries to ignore his infatuation and feelings for her but the more he gets to know her and figures out why she did what she did he can’t help but fall for her. But what happens when Torsten Campbell figures out where Isobel is and how can he protect her when she is determined to be the one to save them all? Can they save each other in the most difficult situation they have ever found themselves in?
I loved both Grant and Isobel. Grant just wants to resolve all the problems peacefully and he lives in hope that Scotland can live peacefully with the Englishmen and that every person can practice the religion they want to without any force from others. He doesn’t want to fight and kill but he does it if he is forced to. If he loves someone he will do anything to protect them and he is also a very proud man so he doesn’t need a woman to protect him, but he changes for the better here too.
Isobel is a very good, sweet, stubborn, feisty and strong woman. She is also scared of losing people she loves and therefore she enters the resistance to learn to sword fight and protect those she loves.
I can definitely recommend this book if you love historical romance books with an amazing hero and heroine and a very suspenseful plot.
I got this book from Entangled Publishing and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fifth book in the series & is easily read on its own although we do meet some characters from earlier books. I’ve loved this series & eagerly await the next book, whilst this wasn’t my favourite it was still an engrossing read which drew me in from start to finish. I love the attention to historical detail & the author’s note at the end was great. I really liked Isobel & as her insecurities came to light, I realised how strong she really was. Grant was a strong Scot who tried to take the peaceful route by talking which wasn’t always successful. It’s a pity that Grant & Isobel didn’t talk as their differences could have been understood & resolved much earlier but then the story would have been a novella. I loved how the pair came to understand each other & became a team. I also loved how they gradually fell in love, no lightning bolts but a gradual realisation of how much they meant to each other
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Highland Obligation is book 5 in Lori Ann Bailey’s Highland Pride series. This is a wonderful series of books but they can be read as stand alone works. I think the heroine in this story is one of my favorite characters. Isobel MacLean is a feisty spitfire but she has a vulnerability and innocence that I haven’t encountered in a “Highland lass”before. Too many authors of Scottish romance make the mistake of portraying their heroines as headstrong, stubborn, royal B’s. They are not likeable nor are they relatable. Bailey gives her heroine strength but also touchable weaknesses - ways that we can relate to Isobel’s trials. The hero Grant MacDonald has his own past and hurts with which to contend. He is portrayed as a peace seeking man, who isn’t afraid of taking up arms if push comes to shove. When Grant discovers he is to be betrothed to a woman he blames for his best friend’s death, he is dead set against the union. Isobel has held a dangerous position in the ranks of the Royalist Resistance. How can he ever trust a woman like her? “He pulled a white shirt over the broad expanse of his shoulders, the sinew and curves that only hours ago had held her and made her feel safe in the dark the ones her fingertips had memorized.” There are a number of steamy sex scenes in this book. Overall, a magnificent work by Bailey. I was given a copy of this book.

I loved this latest installment of Lori Ann Baileys Highland Pride Series. It is #5 but can be read as a stand-alone. I recommend you read them all. Isobel MacLean finds herself on the Isle of Skye entering into a marriage with Grant MacDonald, heir to the MacDonald. Isobel was a fighter in the Royalist resistance and was recognized by Torsten Campbell who wants to claim the reward on her head. Her family, realizing the danger, decided to marry her to Grant, thereby giving her the protection of Clan MacDonald. But, his uncle was killed in a skirmish which involved Isobel . On the walk down the isle, Grant recognizes his bride to be as the warrior from that battle. Both of these characters are good people who are thrown together amidst great misunderstandings. They are immediately drawn to one another. Their witty banter is completely natural. These two characters were most enjoyable being a part of their journey towards love. I loved both Isobel and Grant. I highly recommend this book and any by Lori Ann Bailey. A five star plus read. I was gifted this book via NetGalley, publisher and author and am voluntarily reviewing. My opinions are my own.

Marvelous story by Lori Ann Bailey. Isobel is forced into the life of a warrior by circumstances that changed her perspective of life. She never wanted a husband but her parents wanted to protect her. Grant had a wife before and wasn’t ready for another. As a loyal son and future clan chief he marries Isobel and her troubles. This is a story of two very determined and loyal people who clash over the right way to protect each other. It is a story steeped in history and intrigue. Scotland is in turmoil and the clans are being forced to take a side. Isobel has to protect her identity in order to keep her new clan safe. Throughout all of this they find out that they started as strangers but have fallen deeply in love with each other. Togetherness they make a mighty team.

Cairntay, Castle

Isobel MacLean will do absolutely everything in her power to protect those she loves. As she is guilt ridden over an incident from her past. Feeling she must protect all she cares for or they will leave her. Now she is being forced by her family to weds a man she despises, heir to the MacDonald, Grant MacDonald.

As she blames Grant MacDonald, for not allowing her to kill the Covenanter leader’s vicious cousin. An evil and despicable man who recognized her, the reason her life is now in danger. Also the reason her family was forcing this marriage on her to Grant MacDonald! Yet it was the only people who could keep her safe since her life was in danger. As it is gossiped the Covenanter leader knows who this Royalist resistors female warrior is. Especially since recognized by his cousin, Torsten Campbell, a Covenanter villain who wants to move up in his cousin, Earl of Argyll’s ranks, given the respect he feels he deserves! In addition, knowing he wanted to back the MacLean Clan into a corner, knowing it was the Laird’s daughter.

The MacDonald’s is the strongest Clan in the Highlands. It was the safest course to take to protect Isobel. The Campbells would not be able to climb over the Cullin slippery mountains, no matter if it were the black or red cullins! As they might even go over the cliffs into the Loch Sligachan, even if pagens believe it is the Fountain of Youth! Although a quick death for the leader would definitely solve Isobel’s problems! So there was no way out of this marriage for Isobel!

Yet when Isobel walks down the isle, Grant recognizes Isobel, as the female rebel warrior who killed his best friend. He knows he has to master, his rebellious wife that he would like to murder. He blames her for many things including his brother-in-law’s death. Yet as time goes on and on an assignment in Edinburgh, Grant MacDonald starts to open his eyes and sees his mischievous wife in a different light . He sees he may not of been correct in assuming her evilness. Yet to keep her safe and away from revenge, he must distract his highland beauty, turning his savage warrior, into a Lady of Clan MacDonald. The wife of the Laird MacDonald’s heir! Soon hatred turns to love, but can all be forgotten and forgiven? Will Isabel be able to open a heart she has closed off to everyone? She is even fearful of getting attached to a wee kitten. Can she trust a husband who only wants peace? Will she and her husband put their hatred aside and ever open their hearts? Are they doomed for a loveless marriage for the rest of their lives?

I have read each book in the Highland Pride Series that always blows me away. You can read this book as a stand alone book. Any of the books in this series can be read as a stand alone book. Each book is a bit better than the last, don’t get me wrong as I have loved them all! I love that the setting of this book, is the most beautiful place in the world, the Scottish Highlands.

This book was quick paced, page turner! Another riveting, awe-inspiring, action-packed, romantic, adventure was another phenomenal masterpiece! It has all the features that historical readers love. Plus historical geeks like myself who love real factual history weaved into a fictional romance! It includes murder, arranged marriage, deceit, betrayal, treachery, politics, Clan wars, forced religion, protection, assault, hatred, forgiveness, understanding, and love.

The setting made me gasp for air, being totally breathtaking! The characters were brilliant plus I love revisiting characters from previous books. Plus visiting new characters like some of the MacDonald’s warriors, Annis the maid and her unseen baker. The dialogue was captivating and plots kept my heartbeat racing, wondering what could possibly happen next?

Solemn League and Covenant, (1643), agreement between the English and Scots by which the Scots agreed to support the English Parliamentarians in their disputes with the royalists and both countries pledged to work for a civil and religious union of England, Scotland, and Ireland under a presbyterian–parliamentary

This is a book readers don’t want to miss! I highly recommended Highland Obligation by Lori Ann Bailey.

The fifth book in the Highland Pride series is the book for you if you're looking for a slow burn medieval romance, clans filled with secrets and obligations it's time to grab your favorite blanket. Fill up your mug with a favorite drink and settle in.

Sometimes the only vacation you need is a bookcation and this is sure to fit the bill for a Scottish getaway from the comfort of your home.

So now I have read all the Highland Pride books this one was not a favorite. I found the heroine annoying, yes she had childhood trauma but her marriage to the wonderful hero should have made a difference. Still feeling that she was the only answer made me extremely angry I had hoped that there would be a real ending to all the books here and we would see lots of happy endings. Maybe the author will write one more I'm there for it if she does because I really want more.

Every book in the series is frustrating. It comes down to two people that refuse to trust or communicate leading to drama. I get that there needs to be conflict and some miscommunication, but this series is excessive with it. I finished them all, but they were definitely not my favorite.

Highland Obligation by Lori Ann Bailey is the fifth book in the Highland Pride series. I haven’t picked up the other books of this series, but I don’t think I missed anything in this book by not doing so. I have been on a historical romance binge and this one sounded interesting, so I decided to pick it up.

Bailey does a good job building out the story for the main characters. Neither wants to be in the situation they are in, but they don’t really have a choice. Isobel was an interesting character. She is determined to do whatever she has to in order to protect her family. I found her to be a bit stubborn and she definitely didn’t have any trust in Grant to do what needed to be done. At the same time, Grant finds himself married to the woman he blames for the death of his friend and he isn’t willing to give her an ounce of trust. I’ll admit that I found that plot to be a little frustrating because his blame didn’t really hold up and no matter what, Grant kept coming back to the blame he had for Isobel.

As Grant and Isobel build their relationship, the only thing that is missing is communication. They are absolutely attracted to each other and they grow to care for each other along the way…unexpectedly. I liked how Bailey built this out over the course of the book. As both Grant and Isobel work to stop the man who could destroy Isobel and her family, they eventually find themselves in a place they never thought they’d be, in love.

Overall, I enjoyed this one and will be checking out the other books of the series. While this one had a few things that didn’t work for me, overall it was a solid story with great character development. Check it out if you’re looking for a strong heroine and opinionated hero.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

This was a wonderful story. While this is the fifth book of the series, it is the first one for me. I adored Isobel MacLean and Grant MacDonald. Isobel and Grant are forced to marry. Isobel is a member of a rebel group that is fighting for justice. In a skirmish, Isobel and Grant see each other for the first time. Neither one knows who the other is but they can sense a powerful attraction. So powerful in fact that Grant is distraction at the moment his friend is killed. Isobel on the other hand is injured by a man who recognizes her and can reveal who she is to his powerful cousin (who wants the female member of the rebels).

These two have a long journey to their HEA. I really connected to Isobel because of this story being written in a dual POV format. There are times when Grant is an idiot. He says some things in front of his clan that crushes Isobel's feelings. He blames Isobel for the death of his friend. Even though she wasn't the one who killed him. I really felt for Grant as well. He has suffered a great deal as well. He is heir to the clan and must do his duty for them.

I was engrossed in the story and had a hard time putting it down. The book was written in such a manner that is flowed seamlessly. The scenes were well written and really drew me in.

I recommend this story to anyone over the age of 18. There are some sexual scenes here but they are not overly graphic and they take place after they are married.

People know that for some reason I love the Scottish romances. Here we have a book that’s filled with emotion. I am woman who is part of the “resistance“ her behavior has gotten a price tag on her head. So her parents we’re here off to a clan where they feel she will be safe. As with other unions needed the bride know the groom have met before. The minute the groom finds out who she is he does not want to marry her. She never wanted to get married in the first place. He had been married previously to a young beautiful woman who unfortunately was not very healthy and died a short time into the marriage. He is stuck with the obligation. Sadly in reality from her point of you she doesn’t think much for herself or of herself. She does not believe she’s lovable. That’s how the book proceeds to grow. Love does develop between the two of them. But she still doesn’t understand that she is lovable. Because of the price tag on her head she believes she’s put the whole clan into jeopardy. And she has. But they are not going to let her down. Triumph is when she realizes that she is worth something. The triumph is when she allows herself to be loved. This is a very sensual sexual book. With scenes to drool over. And of course it has a happy ending it’s a romance. But it’s a good author that makes you want to continue reading to the end . Not to be missed

I usually love a highlander romance, and marriage of convenience/forced to marry is one of my favourite tropes, but I found this one a bit tricky to really love.

There were some really great elements, both Grant and Isobel are honourable people, who care about the families and clans they live amongst, and try and do the right thing, however some of the underlying subtext made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Isobel was a brave and capable fighter, who had worked hard to develop her skills, I thought the way her family treated her was horrible, and betrayed her trust, tricking her into going to Skye, announcing the marriage agreement they had made without her knowledge, and then abandoning her there against her will, without any of her possessions. Her own mother just laughed at her. I also felt that the whole story hinged on disenfranchising her of her agency and her power. She was cut off by Grant at every turn. Even after she managed to defend herself and her maid against 3 violent men, she is locked away and told not to act in her own defence.

It just meant that I could not fully enjoy the developing relationship between Grant and Isobel, and there were a few cliches that made me sigh a little, when I came across them.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book via Netgalley and all opinions are my own.

Isobel MacLean had been attacked and she felt responsible. She had three older siblings, all brothers. She was proficient with weapons and could protect herself and others. Her family had brought her to Skye and home of the MacDonalds. They had an arrangement for her to marry the son. She was a part of the resistance and had used her skills and had herself a reputation and a reward on her head.
Grant MacDonald was heir to the Laird and he knew who she was when she walked down the aisle. He
could not marry her but marry her he did. "I am the man who is now forced to save you from yerself."
This is during the time before the Covenanter's tried to side with Parliament and come into power. I enjoyed this book. The arguing between them, Isobel working in the lists and her always looking for ways to escape. It does get sexy so want 18 and over to read it. The characters are warm and kind Their struggle about weapons and her activities. It keeps your interest and you hate to put it down. I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Isobel MacLean fears she can't protect those she loves. Due to a violent attack in her past, she'll do anything to keep them safe--except marry the infuriating Grant MacDonald.
Forced to wed the lass responsible for his friend's death, Grant MacDonald is determined to tame his hellion wife.
He'll need to use every tool in his arsenal to distract his alluring wife from her quest for vengeance...before it's too late for them both.
I have read most of this series and found almost all to be very well written. Although this book is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone.
This is book number five of this series and although all contain interconnecting characters each one is a story of it's own and there is no need to catch up on the series before reading this one.
I gave Isobel and Grant's story 4.25 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

Isobel MacLean fears she can't protect those she loves. Due to a violent attack in her past, she'll do anything to keep them safe--except marry the infuriating Grant MacDonald, heir to the MacDonald laird. She wants justice for her family, not a damn husband. Unfortunately, we don't always get what we want. Forced to wed the lass responsible for his friend's death, Grant MacDonald is determined to tame his hellion wife. On a mission to Edinburgh to prevent war, sparks fly as they spar with each other, and Grant is starting to wonder if maybe his wife is a wee bit misunderstood. He'll need to use every tool in his arsenal to distract his alluring wife from her quest for vengeance...before it's too late for them both.
This was a pretty good book. I don’t recall reading any of this author’s books before so I went in with no expectations. While I was yelling at both of them throughout to just talk to each other, I was happy to follow them through their story to get to their HEA. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I really liked Highland Obligation! It's the fifth book in the Highland Pride series. and can be read as a stand-alone. This is my first time reading a book from this author, I enjoyed her writing style and look forward to checking out the other books in this series.

Our heroine is Isobel, who we find on the eve of her arranged marriage. Her family fears for her safety and think it best for her to marry into the MacDonald clan, thinking they can best protect her.
Grant MacDonald first sees his bride as she's walking down the aisle and recognizes her as the woman responsible for his friend's death.
They both try to fight their growing feelings for each other and begin to see that maybe their first impressions were all wrong.
This was such a good story with some action sprinkled in with the romance and I loved both our main characters.
I received an ARC from Entangled via NetGalley.

Isobel MacLean has been fighting with the Royalist resistance, but now someone has seen her identity. That makes her a risk for her clan, so her father decided that marrying her off into a really strong clan is the only way to keep her safe. Isobel's idea is just to kill the man who saw her face. That will keep everyone safe. That's all that matters to her. As she sees it, it's her job to protect everyone she loves.
Grant MacDonald is furious when he sees the woman he has to marry. She's the one who caused his uncle to be killed by interfering in a battle. He was expecting a ladylike bride not a hardhearted warrior.
The sparks fly between our characters from the start. Neither one is going to give in to softer emotions. It's great fun following them through their tangled journey, and finding out the reasons behind the behavior. These are difficult times for the people of Scotland trying to stay out of the troubles the civil war has imposed on England.
I loved it.
