Being a woman raised in a man’s world, Reid thought becoming a Knight would give her purpose and strength. So far, it has done nothing but give her trouble. The king ordered her to spy on the Axian royal family while she prepares for her marriage—a marriage neither she nor Price Dexter wants. Once in Axian, Reid realizes she’s being used as a pawn in a decades-old political match. With the king and Knights seemingly at odds, Reid’s allegiances are torn, especially when she finds friendship in the unlikeliest of places.

This book is for you if… a book series with a medieval setting, a serious amount of sass and the angst™ might be your thang.

Overall.
It satisfies me greatly when an author unknown to me continues a series with the same quality with which she introduced it in the beginning. Thus, right after I read Realm of Knights , I vowed to stick to Jennifer for a couple of other books as well but - as is often the case - never got around to doing that. I'm starting to suspect I'm missing out on stuff.

Jennifer has a simple, but effective style of telling a story: it wraps you into the narrative and makes you feel at home almost instantly. The barrier I felt in Realm of Knights definitely went away with Shadow Knights. I was able to connect with the characters a lot better and MAY have developed a crush or two. MAY. cough cough. Whatever.

In addition, I am and always will be smitten with the idea of female knights who fight for their kingdom. I'm aware that certain physical limitations apply but it remains a fact that womxn have invented, reshaped and perpetuated sneaky since the first neanderthalgurl figured out them men be trying to run the show.

What’s happening.
Reid has to face the fact that not only did her king trade her off to another kingdom so she may function as a spy, her father even approved of it. Trying to make the best of her predicament, she takes blow after blow from her fiancé while being once again faced with the fact that her new kingdom is far more preferable to the dictated hell-hole she came from.

4 STARS.Would stay up beyond my typical hours to finish it. I found some minor details I didn't like, agree with or lacked in some kind but overall, this was enjoyable and extraordinary.

I knew I’d fall in love with Dexter and Reid.

I continue to adore Ackley, and of course I can’t wait until they kill the King.

Pros:
- Dexter and Reid slowly warming up to each other
- Ackley messing with Dexter whenever possible
- Colbert being a solid friend to Reid, despite his brother's initial mistrust of her.

Cons:
- A stubborn Prince (he's basically a king honestly) who foolishly keeps wanting to believe the best in his illegitimate son despite all evidence proving he is a bad seed

3,75 stars > because I think 3,5 is not exactly enough and 4 is still a Liiiitle bit too much.

Finished this book waaaay sooner than expected; it was super fast paced! Enjoyed it from beginning till end, but also have to say though that I still feel like on some regards not everything is as extendedly written down as I would’ve liked, as was the case with the first book as well.

In general, I love the entire set of characters and the (platonic) relationships Reid has with some of them. I think that after book 1, this all progressed really well in this 2nd installment. Her developing friendship with Gyntha for example is something I really enjoyed reading about a lot! And I’m a sucker for basically all princes in this story haha.

And whereas I LOOOOOVE love loooove the developing romance between Reid/Dexter, I also feel like they nearly haven’t gotten enough one on one time with each other as of yet, which would’ve made the development a bit better in my honest opinion. I still miss some more in depth writing on this front. I am super addicted and hooked to their romance so don’t get me wrong, but I just feel like everything develops a bit quickly in comparison to the actual time they spent together, you know? But truly: I definitely do love both of them together and just need more of them!! Dexter is such a beautiful swoon worthy and sexy character whom I can’t get enough of! Hot damn!

Also a major plus punt for me in this 2nd installment: I really like the more extending political progress in this book. That was really well written down I think and had me guessing constantly about what’d happen next. really liked the twists the author threw my way and am excited to see what’s going to happen next!

Conclusion
This was an overall super entertaining read to me. I still feel like the author remains a bit superficial on some progress she’s written down, but there were a lot of really well progressing elements as well. This was in my honest opinion a better developed book than the first one, but I still give it a 3,75 rating (which is a bit Exact, I know haha but as I stated at the beginning of my review: 3,5 just feels like not enough and 4 feels like it's still a little bit too much. But because this was in general more developed and also more enjoyable, I up it to a 4 star rating in the system. 3 stars is definitely too less!)

The book was finished within a day so that’s enough of a sign to confirm how much I enjoyed reading it. Even though the technical writing lacks a bit here and there, the writing style is super engaging, addictive and makes it super fast paced. The build up towards the end is really well done and has me super excited to read the conclusion book of this story asap. I immediately bought book 3 on my Kindle, which I’m definitely be reading next!

Just happened-

I threatened my family with bodily harm if they interrupted me whilst reading.
It was worth it.

As per usual, it is super late and I need to fangirl over a certain someone real quick.

FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS, DEXTER, JUST MARRY ME. COLBERT CAN BE INCLUDED AND ACKLEY AS WELL. I REALLY DO NOT MIND, I TAKE ALL.

I should’ve brought popcorn for this.
Gah! Missed opportunity, darn it.

Oh Jennifer Anne Davis, you make my heart sing. It's been a really long while since I last said that about books or authors but this little gem made me feel so happy inside I could've burst into a thousand tiny little flowers. I even stayed up late to finish this book and I very seldom do that.

Plot:
As a member of the Knights of the Realm, Reid swore an oath to protect her king only to discover he harbors a traitorous agenda.

As the kingdom of Marsden teeters on the brink of civil war, Reid must decide whose side she’s on—even if that means betraying her king in order to save the kingdom.

I was deeply in love with the first book and after finishing reading I immediately ordered book 2 and 3. I had to wait effen 6 weeks to receive them but the wait was sooooo worth it. I really feel as if authors as Jennifer Anne Davis do not get enough love from readers. This story just makes me swoon. It was so much fun to get to explore the relationship between Reid and Dexter, to learn more of the Axian culture, to learn about all the schemes and political games that are being played.

I especially loved Reid and Dexter in this book. While everyone is flawed, including them, they are so mature about their relationship. No stupid decisions, not betraying each other, not hiding their hearts. You see them go from guarded to open, to learning and getting to know each other. It is written so maturely and so eloquent. I think I've fallen in love with Dexter. My poor husband :)

The plot is strong and the pace is good, I love how while the romance between Reid and Dexter is there and has a role, we are still focused on the fact that a war might be coming and how it can be stopped to save the Kingdom. We see people make choices, mature ones thankfully and we see how cunning some characters can be. There is more than meets the eye to a lot of them.

I could go on and on and on about how much I loved this book, the plot, its characters but it might become a never-ending love tribute and who wants to read that? I cannot wait to start book three and I dread it. Because there will be a moment I have to say goodbye to my new favorite world.

SURPRISED is what i am by this book!!

Honestly this book is faaaar better I than the first one. Kinda remind me of the folks of the air series. The first book was Devastatingly long and hard to finnish, but once you get to second book, OKURR that’s where all the hype about to start.

The writing style I have to say is quite similar to the first installment, well duh it’s written by the exact same person. But honestly i didn’t really mind or bothered. Id say if you just finished the first book and thinking of giving up on the series, give the second book a chance and maybe you’ll end up surprisingly loving it.😝😝

DISCLAIMER : I received this ARC from Reign Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Reign publishing and Jennifer Anne Davis for the ARC. This is the second book in the series of Knights of the Realm. This book continues from where we left off in the first book. We get to see Reid joining Dexter and then continuing their journey to the palace at Axian. One she arrives at Axian she realizes the fact that there are more things she doesn't know about Axian, the prince and the commander. With each thing, she discovers her loyalties are tested. Her duty as a knight and her impending marriage to stop a possible war between the Northern Marsden and Southern Marsden is hanging heavily on her shoulders. Her life is not in her control any more than it was back in Ellington. Things she looked forward to in Axian won't be the things she will be able to do. Will Dexter and Reid be able to trust each other enough to go through the marriage. While we see their journey we also see the problems arising and the general disquiet it brings. What is the King going to plan and how will he execute it? Can Reid be a knight and not be loyal to the King? With assassins attacking them, King starting a war and an impending arranged marriage between two people who don't trust one another the story takes us through some fantastic turns, assassination attempts, and unlikely friendships. The book was an amazing follow up for the first book and again ends with a cliffhanger and the best ending to keep the readers eager and awaiting the conclusion to this brilliant series. I totally recommend this book and definitely check it out. It's entertaining, fast-paced and filled with intrigue and conspiracy. A 5 star read for sure.

This author is one of my favorites, and this book doesn't disappoint! I loved how people were at odds and then a glimmer of hope... How Reid's character is good, and she battles following orders as opposed following her conscious.

Really great second book, usually I dread the second in a series or am not sure about how I feel about the direction, etc. until the third book is read. This one is great in and of itself!

Full review:

Note: This is book 2 in a series that must be read in order. If you are new to the series, you can check out my review of book one, Realm of Knights HERE

Shadow Knights is a young adult fantasy book and is the second book of the Knights of the Realm series by author Jennifer Anne Davis. By now, you all know how much I love Jennifer Anne Davis. Her Reign of Secrets series is one of my favorite fantasy series, and then book one in this series, Realm of Knights blew everything out of the water. It had all the makings of a new favorite series for me! And that was pretty much cemented when I devoured Shadow Knights. I love this series so much! Book 3, Hidden Knights comes out TOMORROW, and I cannot contain my excitement! I need the book on my kind right now. If you are new to the series, this is the perfect time to binge read them!

I am not going to get spoilery in this review, but at the end of book one, our main character Reid, finds herself in an interesting position. Her whole life she has pretended to be her father's eldest son, not daughter, so that her father's land had a male heir to pass to. Through a series of events, she finds herself in a secret organization, and ends up in a neighboring Kingdom, which turns out to be completely different than everyone in her kingdom was led to believe. I loved how surprising the kingdom of Axian and the Kingdom of Marsden were. I will admit that I think they both played off some extremes to prove a plot point, but I think it worked really well in the larger story, and I am dying to read the next book to see how it will all turn out. And being the master fantasy writer that Jennifer is, her plot becomes even more nuanced and twisty. And the surprises and political intrigue are top notch as expected, but I love all of the layers that found within the story. Every character has a secret of two up their sleeve, and they are all so fantastic!

And the romance is slow burn banter at it's best. Oh, how I am enjoying it all! It is swoon worthy, and so well built. I loved watching it simmer along for the whole book, and I am basically ready to combust with excitement at the next novel. I need it right now. If you are a fan of fantastic politics, wonderful characters, a kick ass plot and a wonderful slow burn romance, you simply must read the Knights of the Realm Series. It has it all, and throughout everything it has Jennifer Anne davis' signature fantatsic writing style. I have more of the plot laid out in my review of book one, but this sequel does a great job expanding on the plot and taking it in new directions. This was a perfect sequel. I think I may like it more than the first book, which is really saying something because that was already a favorite of mine!

Fantasy is my favorite genre by far, and Jennifer Anne Davis has written one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. I love that Jennifer Anne Davis keeps me on my toes so much. In a way that few authors can, she has me flipping pages not only because the story is addictively good, but because I have no idea where it will go next. And that is so darn refreshing, I can't even tell you how much I love her novels. She is in a class of her own when it comes to writing great fantasy. If you have never read a book by Jennifer Anne Davis, you are really missing out. Pick any of her series and start reading! I think Realm of Knights is a great book for new readers to fall in love with. You will become just as hooked as I am. Read this series now! You can thank me later. :)

Um, yes! This book was so good!! It was even better than the first one. I've liked Dexter ever since we first met him, so I loved his part in this book. My only issue is that Ackley seemed like a totally different person, but it's not that big a deal, since I still liked him. He provided some nice comic relief, but just with a completely new personality. The story was so fun and adventure packed and I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. Anyways, I don't really know what else to say other than I loved this book!!

Finished this book and...

I'll be honest, I've already forgotten 80% of the book because the plot was there but also wasn't. Reid comes to Axian, meets with Dexter and the rest of the book is them bickering, going to public events, tip-toeing around one another trying not to reveal any useful information..it's just so forgettable. And there were also too many cringe scenes where Dexter is either a macho jealous guy or the overprotective annoying boyfriend who forces everyone to help Reid with something she either doesn't need help with or she can simply ask for help herself.

I liked Cage of Deceit far better- there was more of a complex storyline and not something I could guess from the first page. *cough* Reid's family *cough* And the guys acted much better than these do. Honestly, I'd rather Reid be single than with any of these guys. Okay, I have to admit I rather like Ackley, but that's probably because he's single and can't be ruined by these "fake romantic macho moments"

There's one character tho, that made all of this bearable and that improved the story immensely, and that is my girl Gyntha ♥

*minor spoilers ahead*

She's Dexters ex-girlfriend who he was supposed to marry, but since the king ordered him to marry Reid he had to break up with her. Let me tell you something, not only did she not hate Reid (or was the jealous type), she HELPED HER. She gave her advice, trained with her and appreciated what they both did for their kingdom. She understood the situation and actually became friends with Reid.

This series gets better with every book.

I love the connections and relationships that Reid develops in this book. People I didn’t like at the beginning became people I liked and people I liked became people I loved. This series is such a pleasant surprise.

In this book Reid goes back the the Prince’s family she was caught stealing from to marry his son, Prince Dexter. I loved seeing Dexter warm up to Reid. When he decided to trust her, his character blossomed. I really enjoyed it when Attlee showed up and started making Dexter uncomfortable. After Reid has to put up with Dexters ex girlfriend, I was glad to see Dexter get jealous over the attention Atlee paid to Reid. And Atlee knew just how to push his buttons.

I can’t wait to read the next book.

My problem is the author writes everything black and white; things are good or things are bad. Also Reid is stupid completely and utterly and she really really thinks she’s special.

If I had to sum up this book maybe even this series in one line it’d be “it was because she had been raised as a man”

Why that phrase? Because that’s her excuse for everything. She doesn’t know how to flirt “it was because she was raised as a man.” If she drops a spoon “it was because she was raised as a man.” Y’all want her to wear a dress?!? Oh well she doesn’t know how to walk in those things because I don’t know if it was mentioned but like she’s really quirky and was raised as a man :)))

Also can we please talk about how this book was supposed to be like pro-women but Reid is probably the most degrading person to fellow women around her?! All she talks about when she’s feeling emotional is how she was raised not to have weak emotional breakdowns other women have, or how she was raised not to cry without reasons like her sister.

News flash EVERYONE cries for a reason, and just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean you can invalidate it...and that’s on being a decent person who understands life is hard and we all react differently.

Anywho 2.5 stars ⭐️ (also disclaimer I’m reading the next book 😔 I’m a sucker for Dexter!!)

Interesting read and I will read the rest book. However, the writing is a bit juvenile and the characters and their actions are a bit simplistic. A fun easy read but just okay writing.

WELL, am I alright?? I can’t believe I am rating a second book in a series FIVE stars when I only gave the first book four.
Am I okay after reading this book? No. Am I mad about it? No.

I actually loved this so much. Reid was such a powerful character in this book and I really grew to understand her motivations and decisions. She was fiery and passionate but also reserved and knew when to say nothing. I felt like she came across so much more relatable in this book.

New characters!! Hello Dexter my main man. I knew in book one I would like him and I wasn’t wrong. We only meet him briefly at the end of book one but that one scene was all I needed and book two Dexter didn’t disappoint. He’s actually a male love interest who isn’t too brooding or too over the top and I love it. His parents were also so nice and the friendship Reid has with his brother is lovely.

Ackley drove me up the wall in this book. I can’t figure that boy out and he just seems to be like a fly around shit. Always there and always annoying.

I thought the plot proceeded very well and Jennifer paced this book in good time. I felt connected to the story and knew what was happening and the book made logical sense.

Book 3 is already downloaded and now imma cry because I want there to be more!

*Thoughts*

Shadow Knights by Jennifer Anne Davis is the second installment in the authors Knights of the Realm series. Since it has been a minute since I read the first installment, I'll do a bit of a summary. Reid Ellington was raised a boy by her father. Duke Ellington has 4 other daughters so Reid went unnoticed. After 18 years of pretending and passing as a boy, Reid became noticed by Knights of the Realm. As a female who was trained in combat, the young princes Gordon and Ackley, believed her to be the perfect person to spy on the neighboring nation since she can "pass" as both male and female.

Unputdownable

I could not put this book down for anything. I will tell you I read both books one and two in one straight sitting only stopping to eat and use the bathroom. The plot of this book is absolutely incredible. Sides are chosen and new events, schemes and secrets are revealed. Through it all Reid stays strong and determined not letting anything or anyone decide what she does and what she what's she's going to do. The ending is not a cliffhanger, but it leaves you begging for book 3, the fate of Marsden hangs in the balance.

#Her natural reaction was to punch him in the face. However, she couldn’t behave in such a manner when surrounded by Axian’s esteemed guests.#

So sadly Ackley is newer going to be the love interest. I like him him way better, but it seems me and the mc doesn't have taste.

Besides that, I still highly enjoy that it's hard to tell who to trust. I can't wait to see how it all ends.

First of all: I love this cover. So much. So pretty.

Now that that's out there, let's move into the review.

The best things about Jennifer Anne Davis books is that they have a large enough cast for variety and entertainment, but not enough to overwhelm the reader. They also all have excellent pacing that keeps the story moving, but also slides in important details.

'Shadow Knights' is no different.

Moving from the Northern Marsden royal family, Reid has to take on the Axian royal family in far more intimate circumstances than she would like. By being forced into an arranged marriage with a man who threatened her life the last (and first) time they met.

The book teeters on the edge of the ages old question of who to trust.

Dexter knows she was sent to spy. He can't trust her.

Reid knows Dexter is hiding something. She can't trust him.

And it shows.

Which is something that is not always done well in other stories with the same premise. Yet, every action has a reaction and they all make sense. The relationship that does eventually develop between Dexter and Reid is something natural and takes very delicate timing. There's always the sense that if something went just a little bit differently over the course of the book, things would not be what it is. Nothing feels contrived.

This also extends into the plot. Things are happening all over northern Marsden that has everyone in Axian on edge. And even a marriage of convenience isn't all that convenient.

Without giving too much away, I can honestly say that this book does not enwrap itself in Dexter and Reid circling around one another. There are real stakes, dangers, and plots to unravel and they're both willing to work at their own ends. If they happen to meet in the middle and agree on some things, so be it. But it's not the goal. Which was something I truly appreciated.

To wrap this up, I would definitely say that this met every one of my (high) expectations for the sequel of 'Hidden Knights'.

This is better than 1st book (far fewer plot/logical issues) but every type of obstacle is thrown at the main girl character and she handles it with ease (her internal "struggles" are just surface level) and lack of character dvpt (what's there is quite shallow). Too many predictable plot twists and she's a Mary Sue where she has many perfect traits so that most readers will like her (not me, unfortunately).

I did not like how the first book's male love interest (Gordon) was purposely changed to become a coward/irrationally dislikable character to make readers ship main girl character with the new love interest (Dexter). I liked Dexter more than Gordon while reading the 1st book when readers thought it'll be Gordon who'll be the main love interest, but I still don't like the author's treatment of Gordon.
Another thing is, I like what we saw of Dexter in the 1st book, but this 2nd book made me dislike him (sleeps around, not a 3D character. Just traits the author imposes on him to make him desirable / likeable to readers like strong and possessive of the girl, but nice to her at the same time *eyerolls).

I still think Harlan is the best male character.

*I read the arc of the first book in the series through NetGalley then saw the final books in these series are on Kindle Unlimited so I decided to finish the series. The first book didn’t was flat – but I did like the girl growing up as a boy, Mulan thing going on. So I wanted to see what happened. Reid is now living as a full on girl, but trying to adjust to it.

*I do like Prince Dexter and his brother. They seem to have a close bond and are very different from each other.

*The political intrigue between kingdoms is solid. I thought it kept the story moving.

Random Notes:
*I think this series is for a teen reader yet I was expecting young adult story levels. So this sequel fell even shorter for me than the first did! Reid just feels so weak for someone who grew up as a boy. She is so boring and doesn’t inspire me at all. What was her role as a knight really? She’s supposedly undercover but it seems like everyone knew why she was in Axian, there was nothing shadow like about it! That frustrated me the most.

*Reid and Dexter lack chemistry. They didn’t do it for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️
*The writing was more telling than showing at times.

Final Thoughts:
I will say this, if you want a simplistic, light, young adult fantasy story, you will enjoy this one. It’s a quick read. For me, I don’t think I’ll read the next book because I just want a bit more from Reid since she is the main character.

Read: February 2021 Rated 3.5 Stars

This is normally the type of series that is right up my alley. This one fell short for me though. I think it's because I didn't feel any substance from the characters. Reid, our Heroine was raised as a boy and when the truth is out that she is a girl, gets treated differently. She hates it. She feels the lack of respect for her decisions and capabilities. Yet she doesn't voice her feelings. Or if she does it's extremely brief and then she ignores the issue.

All throughout the series she talks about wanting to create change in her world but yet she doesn't seem to even try to reason with and teach those she considers friends.

There are also some pretty hefty emotional crisis that happens but I don't feel any of the characters show a true depth of feeling on these issues that directly affect them. In real life many of us would be changed for life or having a mini break down at some point. No one seems to be truly affected by things like (spoilers from book two:

I think this is what ruined it for me.

On the plus side I did enjoy who was endgame. Who it appeared to be at first left me confused since I didn't feel a connection.

I'm just going to rate this trilogy all together because simply put there was nothing impressive about any of the books. I have read other series by this author and enjoyed them but this one was not for me. It had a very immature feel to it in each of the 3 books. Our lead female acts like shes 12 years old. She continually blushes and gets embarrassed anytime sex is so much as mentioned. So here is my breakdown of the 3 books:

Book 1 was free at least when I got it, Id rate this one a 3 star.
Book 2 was more like a 2.5 star for me. I paid $4.99 for this one.
Book 3 sucked. I'm going to rate that one a 1.5 star. I also paid $4.99 for this one.

So long review cut short...………….the characters all felt overly juvenile to me. I paid $10 to read this trilogy and would not recommend others do the same. After completing this trilogy I was mostly irritated with myself for reading all 3 of these books and wasting my time and money. Do check out some of this writers other work though. Just not this particular series.
