Matt Watter’s ‘Dream Phaze—Germination’ is a fast-paced, sci-fi drama featuring a healthy dose of technology and a fascinating ‘Dream Immersion’ premise.

‘Dream Phaze’ is the story of the husband and wife team of Saxon and Margo, a pair of scientists who have created ‘Dream Immersion,’ a super advanced virtual-reality-based tech that allows users to experience the past and potential future.

Predictably, opposition to the virtually limitless technology arises, and the duo are quickly forced to reconsider their life’s work. Unfortunately, they soon realize that everyone—from their team of ‘codesters,’ family, and even the users themselves—has a very different idea of just what should be done with Dream Immersion.

Well-written and immediately engaging, ‘Dream Phaze’ clips along at an almost breakneck pace. The main narrative is broken up by a series of vignettes offering readers a glimpse into just how powerful a Dream Immersion experience can be. While the story’s length and dialogue-driven plot create the illusion of a ‘quick read,’ ‘Dream Phaze’ poses a ton of intriguing ideas and questions. Unfortunately, Watter’s efficient narrative leaves little room for soul-searching and rumination, and one can’t help but wonder what he could’ve accomplished with another hundred pages or so.

All in all, ‘Dream Phaze’ is a solid sci-fi action/thriller that should appeal to a wide-variety of genre fans. Bonus points for offering a fresh, new take on a tried and true premise.

Dream Phaze - Germination by Matt Watters I thoroughly enjoyed Matt Watters futuristic part-dystopian novel Dream Phaze Germination. Set around an establishing start-up business bringing dream immersion technology to a global audience, this centred around the trials and tribulations of Saxon and Margo Zynn of ZynnComm. There is an edgy moral dilemma woven through the story and in some ways it is for the reader to decide whether dream immersion is a good or bad technology. This book would really appeal to gamers and techno-geeks, and there is a plethora of characters, game plays and techno-speak to get a handle on. It even has a Glossary at the end to provide definitions for the jargon. I would certainly recommend this for fans of futuristic sci-fi/fantasy/dystopian novels.

Educational novel on ethical technological advancement

Dream Phaze - Germination is an enthralling Sci-Fi novel set a few decades into our future and kept me engaged throughout. Author Matt Watters employs a beautiful kind of descriptive writing style that thrusts the narrative into action while thrillingly captivating readers in immersive action-packed character dialogues. As we follow the quotidian routine of Dr. Saxon Zynn, the story’s protagonist, readers are introduced to many character relationships, providing us with the backdrop for which the complexities of the narrative can further unfold. As the story develops, more clarity and intrigue is formed while reading about the Dream Immersion Platform and the vision for its commercialization to the masses. Questionable applications of this technology are mentioned among Saxon, his family, and his work colleagues in regards to legality as well as the potential risks and benefits, including memory preservation and entertainment purposes, which I felt were the driving points for the plot. Watters does a wonderful job at bridging literacy of futuristic technology with readers to ensure a flow of clarity during our imaginative process while reading about somewhat ethereal and modernized concepts. A glossary for quick reference is included that was handy to have yet not a necessity. I was happy to be able to follow the passages clearly without needing to skip to the glossary for deciphering. Overall this book is a fun, interesting, and enjoyable read that I would highly recommend. One of my most interesting takeaways from reading this novel is exploring issues regarding the adaption of advancing technology in relation to human ethics and morality. Themes involving organic versus technological human growth resonated strongly for me. The development and implementation of advancing technologies in our modern era is inevitable and I see this book as a means for opening educational discussion that may explore these moral and scientific issues of humanity’s evolution in depth at the collegiate level.

Dream Phaze by Matt Watters is a sci-fi novel set in the not-so-distant future about Dr. Saxon Zynn and his wife,Margo, who are in the late stages of developing dream immersion technology. The premise is an intriguing read; the characters are extremely knowledgeable about various decades, eras, history, subjects, and incorporate events from the past in their dream immersions such as witnessing meteors, fighting wars in the ancient Roman Era, a 19th century bar fight with American cowboys; these varied simulated dream sequences keep the plot interesting—the reader doesn’t really know where they will find the characters next.

The idea of dream immersion is meant to be the next means of entertainment media, surpassing even the beginnings of late 19th century cinema. The possibility of something like this existing one day makes for an interesting premise—like video games but with virtual simulation through the sub-consciousness; they even create a disclaimer of rules and regulations for participants to follow. It reminds me a little of Avatar, with the people lying in pods while their consciousness goes elsewhere—makes for a fascinating premise/storyline.

While the novel is extremely well-written with a definitive, well-thought plot and dialogue, the scientific language used throughout the novel sounds more like a lecture than story-telling. With this type of technical dialogue, I don’t feel much attachment to the characters themselves. The author and the characters he created are extremely intelligent and likable enough, but I’m a reader who likes a little more feeling. I’d definitely recommend to those interested in the sci-fi genre who appreciate a more technical/scientific style of writing.

Watters spins a dizzying, exhilarating tale of technological wonder, family drama, and political intrigue in this enthralling latest.

Dr. Saxon Zynn and his wife Margo have worked for years on Dream Immersion, an immersive interactive technology that allows users to experience both past and future. But with a large group of people, including the Fundamental Purists opposing the launch of the Dream Immersion, Saxon and Margo soon find themselves at a crossroad where they have to pick between their professional obligations and personal preference.

A Swiftly paced narrative including short vignettes into the Dream Immersion experience proves seductive, drawing the reader into Saxon’s intriguing world of technological amazement. Watters uses familiar set pieces—advanced virtual reality, techno wonders, moralities and science, protagonists caught up in their personal turmoil, recklessness of the youth, and family drama.

The characters are thoroughly developed. Saxon and Margo are the parents the reader can easily relate to. Watters’s concept of Dream Immersion enabling the user to visit the past and future to fulfill their own fantasies is unsettling and thoroughly convincing, and he employs it skillfully to emphasize themes of ethics and moral issues when it comes to technology advancement.

Readers looking for a healthy dose of family drama in their science fiction will be enthralled, and those fond of hard-core SF will find an exhilarating story that’s hard to put down.

Suffused with a swiftly moving plot and deeply realized characterization, the novel makes for a thoroughly engrossing page-turner.

Dr. Saxon Zynn and his wife Margo are finally ready to witness the launch of their dream project – Dream Immersion, a super advanced virtual-reality-based technology that allows users to experience preserved histories, imagined futures, and video games. But with strong opposition to the virtually limitless technology from various sections of the society, the pair is forced to reconsider their life’s work.

Watters allows the short vignettes containing various users experiencing the Dream Immersion to unroll at regular intervals, allowing readers to glimpse into futuristic possibilities. He gracefully interweaves intricate worldbuilding with a swiftly moving plot and intriguing storyline. Saxon, Margo, and the other characters remain engaging, with Hugo’s story driving the narrative. The narrative flows at swift pace, with exhilarating moments such as rapid shifts between the SF plot and secondary suspense storyline.

Fans of virtual reality laced SF will appreciate the endless possibilities Watters shows through various engineered dreams experienced by the characters. The prose is crisp, the threat to Saxon’s Dream Immersion project is a constant looming shadow, and Saxon and Margo’s parental worries and dangerous consequences of Hugo’s youthful recklessness are thoroughly believable.

Watters’s strength is interlacing the family drama and political intrigue into a complexity that isn’t confusing despite the abundance of technical jargon.

This is a must-read for fans of hard SF.

Author Matt Watters gives readers an interesting take on the concept of dream immersion in this debut sci-fi drama Dream Phaze. Australia 2046. Dr. Saxon Zynn and his team at Zynn Communications have worked tirelessly on their Dream Immersion Platform, a type of virtual-reality where users can experience the past and the possible future. The endless possibilities are shown through various engineered dreams experienced by the characters and are scattered throughout every chapter. Unfortunately as with any new technology, Dream Immersion is met with a lot of opposition and Saxon will have to overcome a number of obstacles including the kidnapping of his son and a religious cult, in order for his project to succeed. Despite the heavy technological jargon, Watters keeps readers in the loop and prevents them from being overwhelmed by including a handy glossary at the end. This quick read’s imaginative take on the dream immersion trope is sure to be a must read for sci-fi fans.

An incredibly interesting plot, enticing characters, and definitely a hard sci-fi book for lovers of the genre. Watters' attention to detail and the ability to write with such fascinating ease to the genre made for a really enjoyable read. The addition of a futuristic dream technology made it feel very much like a less harrowing episode of Black Mirror. There was something about this book that felt very abstract and ephemeral (much like a dream itself) and I really think it worked. It was endlessly helpful to have a glossary of terms in the back of the book and I appreciated the specificity of this world that the author had created for us--endlessly imaginative for a reader to engage with.

Honestly, this book would have made a phenomenal graphic novel and I look forward to reading more from Matt Watters.

Interesting characters with an intriguing plot. It's a short novel but the idea behind it has made me think and that's why I gave it five stars. Well written and entertaining.

There have been many novels that use dreams as a plot device. They use them to transport the story somewhere else, then exit the story for the reader to realize it was all a dream. Wizard of Oz comes to mind.

Dream Phaze takes dreams to the next level and monetizes them. Dream Phaze explores engineered dreams as an ongoing source of entertainment and I think that is a fascinating idea.

Dream Phaze - Germination caught me by surprise. The writing is excellent, descriptive and Matt Watters has clearly done a massive amount of research on the subject of dreams. The characters come to life from the pages through engaging dialogue, they feel authentic. The reality within the pages is what excited me most about this book, it could be our future. I normally don’t read books of this genre, I’m a fantasy reader, but I couldn’t put this book down. I think it was relatable because everyone dreams. This is a must-read sci-fi.

A fast-paced yet startlingly realistic look at the sort of technology everyone in the dreampunk community is waiting for. It builds on the brain's natural capacity for dreaming but adds structure, allows better retention of the experience, and—critically—enables multiple people to jack into the same shared experience. It's like VR but indistinguishable from reality… and it's coming. Are we ready?

Delve into fascinating concepts of engineered dreams and discover the evolution of indulgence in a world where all human desires can turn into realities in Dream Phaze – Germination by Matt Watters.

Dream Phaze - Germination by Matt Watters is an exhilarating science fiction read that builds on a fascinating premise followed by an exciting adventure. Readers will love the moral stand-off between Dr. Zynn's values and the Fundamental Purists' vendetta for the wonderful technology of engineered dreams. The author has delved into the social effects of technology in our lives and the implications of misuse of a program like this. It is a technological marvel that allows the user to enter a virtual world where they can live and experience a world that caters to the whims of the user; a world of peace and absolute happiness. High-tech virtual technology developed by a couple is put in jeopardy when society refuses to accept the invention. This leads the way for swift interchanges between drama and sci-fi plots as the couple tries to deal with unprecedented dilemmas.
Dr. Saxon and his wife Margo have been working on an innovative virtual technology project called Dream Immersion for years and are ready to witness the launch of their life's work. Dream Immersion is a cutting-edge virtual reality system using which people can create their own digital environment, down to the experiences they wish to conceive, including their deepest wishes, wildest thoughts, historic events, and imaginable futures. This scientific wonder, however, is faced with considerable criticism and opposition from various societal groups such as the Fundamental Purists as these people are unable to appreciate the benefits of the technology. With a substantial portion of the population rejecting the invention, the couple's life's work is put in peril, and they now must rethink what the future holds for Dream Immersion. The storyline is a unique mix of several story genres, with the plot smoothly shifting from sci-fi to family drama. The meticulous narration of the futuristic virtual world experienced by the users of Dream Immersion makes the story exhilarating and quite intriguing.

The novel's highly suspenseful and thrilling plot is backed by solid world-building and character development. The family drama genre wrapped around a science fiction core makes Dream Phaze - Germination particularly appealing to sci-fi lovers.

Dream Phaze - Germination
I have read both novels in the Dream Phaze series.
This novel series is not a prediction but is aspirational. Someone will use this story as the jumping off point to one day realise this technology. There isn’t a dark side to this tech, the dark side is human nature and how the tech is twisted to benefit a minority. This is an absolute possibility in our protopian society. The worldbuilding created around this new technology is significant. By overlaying our human strengths, imagination, our nuances alongside selfishness, pessimism and greed, Dream Phaze weaves a complete, believable vision of one future. I highly recommend the series and eagerly await the next novel.

An excellent book must have two things - and this has both

1. Readers are visually stimulated, we create mental images when reflecting on things and an excellent book has to evoke emotions, atmosphere and settings for its reader. Watters does this with ease.
2. A good book should aspire to establish a relationship between its characters and the reader. Readers want characters they can connect with, feel invested in and an author who delivers this creates an engaged reader who becomes an advocate. Watters also succeeds here.

Disappear into a world where everything is possible.

I recommend this book and the next book in the Dream Phaze series, Imagination, unreservedly.

Upon beginning ‘Dream Phaze’ I was taken by the entire concept of Dream Immersion. I have never read on the subject before and found that aspect engrossing. One of the best bits about this book was that it made me think, it made me consider things I hadn’t before.

There were parts of the narrative that I found lacking, which was extremely disappointing. The use of technical language was overwhelming, and I had to flick to the glossary numerous times which hampered my enjoyment of the novel.

Overall, I would recommend this book.
