Biography
Thilakavathi was born and bought in Dharmapuri. She is an alumnus of Auxilium College, Vellore and Stella Maris College, Chennai. In 1976, she became the first woman from Tamil Nadu to become an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. She began her police career as an Assistant superintendent of Police serving in Vellore and later Tiruchirappalli. She subsequently served as Deputy Commissioner of Police of Chennai and Superintendent of Police in the Civil Supplies CID and Commercial Crime Investigation Wing, before being promoted to the rank of Deputy inspector general of police (DIG), while being posted to the Railways in early 1993. Later that year, she was appointed the DIG for the Chengalpattu-MGR range, that covered districts Chengalpattu East and West, and South Arcot. In the process became the first woman DIG of the State. In 2007, she was promoted to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP). In 2010, she was posted as chairman of the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, upon receiving a promotion to the rank of Director general of police.
As writer
In 1987, her first short story was published in Dinakaran. Her first short story collection to be published in book form was 'Theyumo sooriyan'. She is a prolific writer who has written more than 300 short stories and a number of novels and poems. Her short stories Theiyumo Sooriyan (Will the Sun Wane) and Arasigal aluvathillai (Queens don’t cry) won the Government of Tamil Nadu's best short story prize for 1988-89. Her novel Pathini Penn (1983) was made into a film. Some of her works including Vaarthai thavari vittai, Arasigal aluvathillai and Muppathu kodi mugangal have been adapted for television. She is also a translator for Sahitya Akademi and has translated Nizhal Kodugal, Uthirum Ilaigalin Oosai, Govarthan Ram and 50 short stories into Tamil. In 2005, she was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for Tamil for her novel Kalmaram (lit. The Stone Tree).

Very well written book. Since I am currently on reading slump, I was surprised that I finished this book in two sittings!
Initially, the author wrote in Chennai colloquial Tamil. Later on, the style change according to the education level of the characters. I had trouble reading "madras bashai" :) initially. The ebook has many spelling mistakes which was slightly irritating.
The author developed the story gradually explaining the difficulties faced by an individual family to the plights of construction workers and a solution possible if people are willing. Sometimes, the novels that offers positive attitude/solutions might be artificial, superficial, etc. But not this novel.
I am very taken with this author's writing style. Will be reading more novels of this author.

தமிழக நடுத்தர வர்கத்தின் பெருங்கனவு எப்போதுமே சொந்த வீடு தான் . அப்படி தன்னை தன்னுடைய கனவு நோக்கி கொண்டு செல்லும் போது அவர்கள் அடிக்கடி சொல்லும் குறை , தமிழக கூலி தொழிலாளர்களை விட வடஇந்திய கூலி தொழிலாளர்களே மேல் . காரணம் கேட்டால் , தமிழக தொழிலாளர்கள் சட்டம் பேசுகிறார்கள் , குறித்த நேரத்திற்கு தான் அவர்கள் வேலை பார்கிறார்கள் , யூனியன் போகிறார்கள் என்பது தான் . சிறுக சிறுக சேர்த்து , கனவு கண்டு வீடு கட்ட நினைக்கும் நடுத்தர வர்க்கம் படிக்க வேண்டிய புத்தகம் கல்மரம் . உரிமை என்பது மனிதர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் வழங்க படவேண்டிய ஒன்று .தங்களுக்கு கிடைக்கின்ற உரிமை மற்றவருக்கு மறுக்கப்படும் போது அதுனடைய வலி என்ன என்பதை இந்த புத்தகம் படித்தால் புரியும் . கட்டிட கூலி தொழிலாளர்கள் என்றால் உழைக்கும் செக்கு மாடுகள் தான் என்கிற பிம்பத்தை இந்த புத்தகம் உடைக்க முயற்சி செய்து அதில் வெற்றியும் அடைந்துள்ளது என்று கூறலாம் . இலக்கியம் என்பதற்கான ஒரு அடையாளம் அந்த இலக்கியம் படைக்க பெற்ற காலத்தின் சமூகத்தை பற்றி விவரிப்பது தான் என்கிற ஒரு தரவை தந்திருக்கும் புத்தகம் இது என்று சொல்வது மிகையாகாது .

வான் உயர கட்டப்பட்டு கம்பீரமாக நிற்கும் கட்டிடங்களை கட்டும் தொழிலாளர்கள் பற்றிய நாவல். அவர்கள் தினம் தினம் படுகின்றன அவமானம் கஷ்டங்கள் நம் மனதை புண்படுத்தும்.

It was a real surprise. I wasn't expecting a perfect fiction from the former IPS officer, still covered a lot of real-life issues of construction laborers (this was pre-migrant workers from the North India) and the importance of forming labor unions. The novel goes through naturally with common people's dialect.

I am curious to read some Sakithya academy award won books, I have read this books.
This is really a nice documentary of daily wage Construction Workers life. It is not just novel there is some useful information which will solve the problem they face.
