Are some men just born bad...or do circumstances conspire to make them that way?
Grant “Hawk” Benning will go down in history as one of the baddest, most hated men on the eastern seaboard...and then some. Hawk cut his teeth on leather and steel, growing up heavily influenced by a culture of violence, drugs and crime. He would navigate the pathways between adolescence and adulthood using only the tools he'd been given...realizing too late that the club that made him a man, would likely bring about his ultimate demise.
Hawk's life, his destiny, was with the Southside Skulls. Prospect at seventeen, Vice President at twenty-one. Two and a half decades of riding alongside the prolific Doc Marshall. Hawk will have a full life...but one wrought with a loneliness built by his reluctance to allow any glimpse of the man who really lived behind the kutte.
During his life, Hawk will fall in love with three women. The first will become his closest friend and she'll leave a legacy that will both brighten and darken Hawk's days to come.
The second, a free spirit...the one in touch with her own soul...the one who may have taught him how to reach his, if only she'd had the time.
And the last...the woman who would ultimately give him something that no one else ever could...a chance to glimpse and explore the best parts of himself...the parts that even he didn't know existed.
Ride along, read along, and make your own decision in the end. Was Grant “Hawk” Benning born to be bad...or was the deck just stacked against him from the get-go?
Wow ! Ms. Cooke does it again what a fantastic read.We loved Hawk's story from beginning to end.I am so glad we got to hear Hawk's story as he was one of the most elusive members of the series who kept himself and his life outside private.
We loved Hawk in this story and you could say even that he was a bit of a hero for all the sacrifices that he made for his club and for all those he loved.I loved the fact that we saw a totally different side of Hawk this time around we saw him and a protector and provider and deep down a man capable of loving with his whole heart even if it was broken a time or too.
There was know doubt that Hawk could be dark and dangerous but, he was capable of so much more and we are just wondering if just one of the women he loved suck around his life might have been so much different.
We found Hawk to be smart and cunning as well and if Doc Marshall was not in charge he would have no problem seeing to that club of his in his own right.I got to say we never realized the extent Hawk went to too protect Doc Marshall and his club making great sacrifices to himself while pretty boy Marshall just skated through life while everybody else paid the price for all of his bad choices.
Overall we just loved the story from cover it was intriguing and heartfelt and we loved seeing that Hawk although down right dangerous was capable of compassion and forgiveness and we just loved his protectiveness of those he loved.Despite the life he lead he did have people he loved and loved him back.Hawk's story was not all hearts and flowers and it was a bit dark but, one thing was sure the darkness that he carried within him never consumed him or it.
I think we have not heard the last of Hawk as I am waiting to see what impact he has on Lion's life and that of the mysterious daughter of his...
I've read a lot of this author's books and enjoyed them. The "Early Years" books in the series have been, hands down, my absolute favorites. The Early Years covers the lives of the founding members of the club. In this book, the author takes what appeared to be an irredeemable character, Hawk, from previous books and makes him into a hero that you have to love and respect. Now I can understand what made Hawk the man he appeared to be in other stories. He goes through unimaginable abuse, loss and rejection during his life. I can't wait for the next book in the series and hope I haven't seen the last of Hawk.
This is the absolute best Early Years book so far. It explains so many things from why Hawk never has an old lady to his relationships with his daughter, Lion, and Doc. Along with explaining the whole reason he became the enemy of the club he loved. I only cried once which is not the normal for an Early Years story. I think it maybe because this story ends before Hawk dies and you know he is still around after reading about lots of these others who are not... around. I hope Hawk has a happy background romance maybe with an older Jamie or maybe Ajie the only one he loved from afar... Hawk has five women not counting two mothers that he loves, but he kinda looses them all because he doesn't want them to get hurt or they do get hurt and he blames himself. I am happy Hawks story came before Lion's because I have a feeling Lion is going to maybe draw Hawk into his story more. It could be interesting if they all end up in Phoenix... Great story Jessie Cooke.
Hawk was supposed to be the one everyone hated. He was always in trouble but I liked him and after reading his story I like him even more. This is another one of the books that I think should have been earlier in the series. That's just my personal opinion but any that say on the cover The Early Years should be read first. Hawk wasn't a really complicated man. All he ever really wanted was to be loved. His life started in not a good way. His mother worked too much and her boyfriend helped take care of him. He was a member of the MC back before Doc took over and changed things. He was a bad person who treated Hawk badly. Don't worry, Hawk payed him back when he grew up. Hawk was the right hand man to Doc and did all his dirty work. If not for Hawk Doc wouldn't have been able to come in and take over. I really enjoyed this one but it was all MC stuff so of course I did.
I seriously thought this would be a book I wouldn't like at all. What a pleasant surprise to find that it one of my favorites so far in this series. Hawk is portrayed as someone that is doing everything he can to be against Doc and and MC. When in fact he has dedicated his life to it and putting his like on hold to make sure the MC is kept out of trouble. Hawk has had some love in his life. His first love up and left and it was years before he saw her again. His second love was tragically killed and his last love he just couldn't find time to bring her in to be a part of the MC. Dolly is back but who knows if they would have had a second chance if her ex hadn't shown up and killed her. Now Wolf is on the run from the MC and no one knows what actually happened but him and Doc. The lengths he would go to, to save his best friend comes at a cost to all that he has built. What a great read, I do wish Hawk would have found his forever HEA though.
Hawk is the character that you have come to dislike because of the assumption that he betrayed his club, but by the end of this book he becomes you have to love and respect. Now I can understand what made Hawk the man he appeared to be in other stories. He goes through unimaginable abuse, loss and rejection during his life. I can't wait for the next book in the series and hope I haven't seen the last of Hawk and that the truth comes out before any harm is done to him.
Hawk, what can I say Well written I've read all the previous 26books and never understand the bond Hawk had with the club and Dax. But he really really wasn't a bad guy he did everything for the love of his brother and his family even sacrificing he's own happiness again and again. True Brother, loyal. Think he's one of my favourite characters in the series!
My heart is broken for all the pain that Hawk went through and then sacrificed his love for the Skulls MC, his love for his brothers and the loyalty to his president. Throughout the past 26 books I couldn't understand why everyone hated Hawk, but they never new the truth. 😭
I am heart broken for Hawk, but I love his.story and all of the ones I have read so far.
The one man you just love to hate turns out wasn't really so bad. He gave it all to save a brother more than once and even took the fall to save the club and the brothers he loved so much. So now we know the rest of the story.
This book is a great In site into Hawk once Doc’s best friend. But in most of the books he’s not very will liked because everyone thinks he betrayed Doc. But read this good read and find out what really happened. Enjoy!!
OMG, Out of all of them so far that I have read, I think Hawk has my heart.. He is who I would have wanted to fall in love with . Everyone hates him but he has a big ass heart..I love this one the best
This was def a 5 star read. I started with book 1 in this early years series with Doc. Hawke play a big role in helping Doc bu it seemed to be at the expense of Hawks happiness. I loved this book!
One of the many things that I love about Skulls The Early Years is that there's so many details as the early members of the Skulls MC get their story told, that were missed in previous books. Grant 'Hawk' Benning didn't start out as the big baddie, but because of early influences, life took him in that direction. Of course since he grew up around Cal, who married his mother, he got quite the education about Club life, but there were times when I really wanted to hurt Cal desperately. So grateful that the brilliant Jessie Cooke told his story, because until now, he always seemed so elusive in previous book appearances. There many bumps in the road that made for a broken heart a time or two, but deep down, he had a big heart so that those he loved, he protected with his whole self since he craved love & acceptance which went sideways a time or two. It didn't matter that he became one of the most hated men on the eastern seaboard, his inner monologue as he got into the MC life, showed a different side of the man capable of serious darkness. I mean, there were several moments of tragedy marking him, but it also made him VP to Doc Marshall, who became his best friend. And as for women, there were three woman in the span of his life, who were the ones who made the biggest impression even though they didn't end well. This story was simply amazing, and I couldn't put it down to save my life, as Hawk made a huge impression on me after learning of his backstory. As with most MC books, Hawk was a gritty, in your face, kind of story that made sure to let us know that there's more to the story than meets the eye. It also showed flawed men, who are usually loyal to the bone, despite the view of others, and no matter the mistakes made, I couldn't help loving them anyway. So you see, Hawk was completely loyal to Doc & the Southside Skulls even with the rumors of his reputation. This is a story you don't want to miss, and it sets up Lion's story to the point where I'm now anxiously waiting for it. If you're as loyal the the Skulls MC as I am, then you have to one click this bad boy ASAP. Or hell, if you haven't started this very amazing series, you need to get on it IMMEDIATELY. So, in conclusion, as always, Jessie Cooke took me on a ride that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
I have reviewed this book for Kindle and Koffee Book Blog
This is the first time l have read anything by this author. l really enjoy MC books, l like the fast pace, and pretty violent lifestyle, so l was looking forward to another author's view of this world.
This story felt like a chronology of one member Hawk's life, as a club member. We got to learn about his childhood, how he survived an angry stepfather, who happened to be a member of the Southside Skulls club. As he grew up around bikers he learned his trade, he learned how to fight and intimidate and how to make some cash selling weed. He had his heart set on his own Harley. He wanted wheels, maybe then he might get lucky with the girls... What he found selling his wares and showing his wheels was Adonis. He was a very forward looking intelligent young man from a totally different background. He would play a very big role is Hawk's life. Adonis ( later called Doc Marshall) wanted what he had, to be a member of the Skull's, but not as the club was then. Oh no, he had some big plans, and he needed Hawk to get him there...
Hawk was a loyal brother, he was well respected by the other riders but not so much by the prez and his sa who was his stepfather. He had a very tender heart, which he kept well hidden, and when he made some female friends he was loyal and protective. Hawk fell in love 3 times in his life, but all he ended up with was heartache, and a few unpleasant surprises.
This book is long, it's also very well written and hot. However, l didn't feel like l could connect with the characters. Maybe it was because the story kept jumping forward too often, and not enough time was given to the relationships to develop between all the characters. l also missed some romance... l am intrigued enough to check out the rest of the series.
This is book twenty-seven and a side book to the original series. It was a great read and I loved getting to read about Hawk. I loved his early years and seeing what made him who is is. I loved hearing his voice. It was different than I thought it would be and I have to say that I think I loved Hawk the best out of all the books in the series. I loved Doc the early years but Hawk, he was special to me.
We get to meet Hawk as Grant, the eleven-year-old that is introduced to the MC world because he is babysat by Cal, his stepfather. He was an angry man. He scrimped and saved and wanted his very own Harley. I think my favorite scene was in the police department and the police ask him what he wants to be when he grows up….president.
He was loyal to a fault. He has love and loss. He fell in love with 3 women and it didn't end well. We see the love he has for the club and the brotherhood and bonds that form. I enjoyed his friendship with Doc. He was his best friend and do what he had to do to protect him. I love love love Hawks big heart. You wouldn't know is given his job and rough exterior and his early beginning. He was hard and a lot of people didn't like him, not me though. When I say that I mean my friends. I liked him. There was always something about him that I was drawn too. Hawk made me swoon. He was misunderstood in my opinion.
The book has some time jumps but all in all, it was a great read and I enjoyed it. The ending, well, you will just have to read it and find out what happens. I look forward to the next chapter in this series. Ms. Cooke you did well.
Hawk: Skulls The Early Years was a great 5 star read and book 27 in the Skulls MC romance series. We get to see Hawk’s history and how he became the man he is today.
We start with his early years and see how he gets introduced into the MC by his stepfather. He learns a lot from being around the MC and he learns quickly how to take advantage of an opportunity and make some money. He couldn’t wait to get his own Harley.
Through the years Hawk will meet three women who will make an impact on him and his life. I had some teary eyed moments when it came to these women. My heart went out to Hawk, because he was very protective of his friends and the women he loved.
When he met Doc, things changed for him. Doc also had a big impact on Hawk’s life. He wanted to be a part of the MC life like Hawk.
Overall I really enjoyed this read. Hawk was a loyal, and respected MC member. There are some twists and turns. The secondary characters added a great element to the story. The story jumps from past to present at times. I can’t wait to read more from this author and series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Reviewed by MAustin from Alpha Book Club
That’s pretty much described Hawk. He had a crappy childhood especially when his mother ended up marrying one of the Southside Skulls MC bikers. Cal taught him everything a boy shouldn’t know but needed to if he was going to grow up to be in the MC as he got older. Cal was a poor example of a man and Hawk was always thinking ahead as to how to get Cal out of his and his mothers’ lives.
Hawk had friends as he was growing up and two of them had a great impact on his life at a young age. One would break his heart and the other would leave him with a promise that on his return things would get much better. He also met other women along the way who had captured his heart but every time he loved someone they would end up dying or leaving him. For a man who was said to have so much darkness surrounding him Hawk was a man with a true heart and would help out people as much as he could. There was goodness within that darkness that not many knew about.
This was my first time reading this author and she has me hooked!! She takes you on a crazy ride messing with your head and heart the whole way through. Now I can’t wait to read Lion’s story.
In Jessie Cooke's latest, we finally get Hawk's tragic backstory; a man whose need for love and acceptance drives him to be a rebel with a cause. Cooke does a good job of making us all feel badly for disliking Hawk from the previous books but while I was deeply intrigued by his story, this book felt more like filling in some necessary gaps for fans of the Southside Skulls than the telling of Hawk's story itself. There were times when it felt a little like a history book, rather than a character arc where you're building a relationship with the character.
I very much appreciated learning the reasons why Hawk, and Doc, made some of the decisions they did and why the two men have what appears to be a grudging loyalty in the other books. And I'm deeply intrigued by Lion's introduction and can't wait for the rest of his story.

I absolutely love the Skulls MC series', and this was a fantastic addition to them! The only thing I wish is that all of the Early Years books would have been written first. It definitely would have made a lot more sense about several things going on with the characters, as well as the clubs, at least to me. However, I've loved reading about all of the original members, getting to know things that the newer generations don't have a clue about, and actually seeing the men for who they truly were, not just their reputations. I also love reading about the newer generations too, as well as having surprise visits from the other chapters. I can't wait for more of this series! I would definitely recommend this book, series, and exceptional author.
Spoiler Review: Before now, Hawk seemed like he was a big selfish jerk. Yet just like most mysteries in life, his life story defines the context for his actions. I so appreciate all the back stories of the Southside Skulls and in Hawk, the early years, Jessie Cooke does not disappoint. His story broke my heart and the sacrifice he made for Doc Marshall, his President, is a true example of loyalty and respect. We all could learn from him. I have read every single one of Jessie Cooke's books since the first one Dax and I encourage all reader's who love this genre to get crackin' right this minute: pick up the first book to read!!
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
I have to say that I am enjoying these early years books for this series. They provide great insight into what made these remarkable men who they were. Hawk has a story you would never believe starting with a rough childhood leading all the way though his life answering all the nitty gritty questions. You are in for rough ride as you read but you won't be able to put it down. Cooke has a way of bringing the darkness to li in the best possible way ever. Perfect for fans of MC romance. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
A very gritty, steamy story giving Hawk's history as well as the Skulls. There was a lot of darkness to this tale and some touching moments and others hard to take. For the most part Hawk was a good man buried under his upbringing and life experiences. Characters that have been in the previous stories were included in the telling of Hawk's story, so the reader may find familiarity and continuity in the world of the Skulls.
I received a copy of this story through Enticing Journey Book Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
Hawk may be a big, mean biker but he is has a lot of love to give. He wants to love and be loved in return. Love was in his grasp a few times but he couldn't hold onto it. My heart broke for this man and I even cried for him a few times. Even though others saw him as a traitor, he was still loyal to his best friend and the Skulls at cost to himself.
This book 27 was not my favorite. Throughout this series by Jessie he was portrayed as a hated man, and that he was. But the way he treated the women in his life. Was just plain selfish. He favored Doc Marshall more than he should have, because he was a selfish pompous man who regarded bodybuilder. This is just my opinion, I just couldn't like this one as much as all the others.
I am at a loss as to what to say, I totally misread Hawk and I feel bad for that , Hawk had a life most would cringe from he lived and breathed for the Skulls and Doc Marshall, the three women who have any type of meaning in his life shows us just who Hawk really was each was in a different way which made me love Hawk. I love seeing the back story of those who were the founders of the Skulls !!!
