Granite Man
Mariah MacKenzie returned to her family's Rocky Mountain ranch determined to reclaim a life she's longed for. Cash McQueen was a distraction she didn't need, a temptation she didn't want—but the only man tough enough to be her guide on a bold quest for a legendary treasure. Cash's passion for prospecting didn't run to beautiful women…anymore. Until Mariah made him want to believe again in something more precious than gold…
Warrior
Wildlife biologist Eden Summers arrived in the Colorado Rockies with one thing on her mind: researching the local cougar population. Used to living and working alone, she had handled threats from nature's fiercest predators. But Nevada Blackthorn, a rancher by trade, a warrior by nature, was a breed apart. And Eden was having a hard time fighting her attraction for a man with a heart and soul as wild as the wilderness that surrounded them.

I can't remember when I first read this series, but while I was cleaning out my bookshelves, I decided to re-read all 4. I'd call these books guilty pleasure reading. Lots to like, lots to dislike, all carried along by interesting plot and great descriptions of the area.

Granite Man & Warrior by Elizabeth Lowell are two contemporary westerns printed in one book. The first, Granite Man, is about Mariah MacKenzie and Cash McQueen. The second, Warrior, is about Eden Summers and Nevada Blackthorn.

These books have all the tropes. She’s an inexperienced virgin. He’s a hardened man with no ability to love. She falls instantly in love. He falls instantly in lust. She ends up pregnant. Everything works out and the live happily ever after. Oh sorry for ruining the plot. Of book books.

Mariah is returning to her childhood home, searching for a long lost gold mine to prove to her brother that she has some worth. She has step-daddy issues. Cash is a geologist, also looking for the long lost gold mind. (Get it – Granite Man?) He has a cheating ex-wife and trust issues. They trek off in the wilderness in search of the lost gold mine together. And of course manage to fall in love.

Eden is a wildlife biologist studying cougars. She grew up in the wilds of Alaska and her best friend is a mostly wolf dog she rescued from a trap. Nevada is an ex-soldier who is also tracking cougars. He is the one who secretly paid for Eden’s grant. He’s seen too much death to even contemplate love. They rescue each other on multiple occasions, literally and figuratively.

I knew I was burnt out on romance before I even picked this up. But I was looking for something that wasn’t going to be emotionally exhausting. I saw this sitting on my book shelf and thought I’d give it a try. I have enjoyed other Elizabeth Lowell books. But these books were a miss for me. Sure, the sexy times scenes and sexual tension are well written. But even towards the end of Warrior’s 13 page second sex scene, I was bored. Just get on with it already. What little plot was around the sex scenes was predictable. And honestly, I’m not even sure I’d know how to fix these books.

As we are here to guide you with your reading decisions, I would say skip this. Or if you are interested, just skip to the sexy parts. The rest of the book probably isn’t worth it. If you want some well written Elizabeth Lowell Westerns, read the Only series instead.

Book #1-Granite Man- After being away from the family ranch for about 15 years, Mariah returned with a map to find the family gold. Cash could not trust her but she set out to prove him wrong. He became her guide and fell in love with Mariah but wouldn't give in to it. She became pregnant but Cash knew or thought he knew that he wasn't the father. Was she conning him? A good read.
Book #2-Warrior- A government "cat" expert was hired to learn about the cougars on the Rocky M ranch. Eden, being a professional, had all the right "gear" to travel out to the "cabin" with her wolf dog, Baby. Nevada set out to find her but Eden was the one who rescued him after a bad fall. This was another good book by Elizabeth Lowell.

2 stories in this book.

1- Granite Man - Mariah returns to her families ranch after 15 years of being unwanted and not fitting in. Her brother and his wife welcome her with open arms but Cash, whose sister is married to her brother, thinks that she is just another female who wants to be taken care of. Mariah searches for a long lost gold mine on her families land to prove that she can pay her own way.

2- Warrior - Nevada steps in to help Eden when she goes into a bar to speak to the bartender about buying supplies and the local drunk patrons begin hassling her. Later she finds him unconscious by the cabin where she is staying to study the cougars in the area. Can two strong personalities blend as one?

Lowell’s books have never failed to disappoint. She is a great author who writes her books with intelligence and great and memorable characters and storyline. I have read almost all of her books and she does have a similar style with the romance where the man doesn’t trust women because of being hurt by an ex in his past and the women eventually shows herself to be worthy and they fall in love. I don’t mind the similarities in the books because they are always interesting and well written. Also, she apparently does her research well about the topics she writes about in the backstory of her books. Another good love story that I recommend to anyone who is a fan of a good romance novel.

"Warrior": I didn't know Elizabeth Lowell's work but reading this story was a real pleasure and discovery; she is a very good writer and created two fascinating characters, interacting in a beautiful wild landscape.
There's a kind of poetical quality in "Warrior" that was quite appealing to me, but some things just sound as exaggerations ("I am a warrior", says the hero, Nevada).
In my opinion, the narrator's sober and passional closeness to the its characters and physical context was really beautiful.

Both books were an enjoyable read. They got a little lengthy in some of the sex scenes. Both had a predictable ending but getting there was fun. I need to check for previous books for the first two men who are married on the ranch.
