L’Âge de la première passe
Ceci n'est pas un essai sur le Congo. Cinq longs séjours, à l'invitation d'une ONG, ne permettent pas d'écrire sur un pays. Ce n'est pas non plus un récit de voyage. Alors quoi ? C'est assurément un livre sur les filles des rues que j'ai rencontrées à Pointe-Noire et Brazzaville, dont j'ai voulu décrire la force et les blessures. Mineures n'ayant pas d'autres ressources que la prostitution, souvent orphelines et déjà mères, elles se métamorphosent dès la nuit tombée pour "faire la vie". Mais peut-être est-ce aussi un livre sur ce monde qui est le leur, avec sa misère et ses mystères, et sur ce qu'il a déplacé en moi...

Unusual memoir-cum-documentary exercise, exploring the lives of Congolese prostitutes (attending an NGO's writing workshops as part of an effort to protect what is probably the most vulnerable section of that society), where Bertina has worked as a teacher / guide at intervals.
Alongside it, Bertina explores the powers of language and writing as a route to self-understanding and a means to 'own' (and hopefully escape from) a damaged life, and his own challenges as a writer.
To be clear, the experiences related by the prostitutes are consistently awful: tales of abandonment by parents, being abused then kicked out when a step-father arrives (kicking out the kids of the 'first bed' starts to sound disturbingly commonplace) and the usual non-payers, brutes, gangs and scumbags. It's pretty bleak.
For me, the most interesting sections are Bertina's musings on the status of the French language in Congo as a kind of straitjacket and tool of power and oppression for the uneducated (which is a thought-provoking challenge to the idea of Francophonie as a bubbly melting pot of colour and diversity, that I'm actually very drawn to).
That, and the fascinating flashes of timelessly barmy Congolese superstition and occult fications: the spectral 'maris de nuit' and 'femmes de nuit', who come to you in your sleep and give you a great night, then leave you sweating in the morning, to the great IRL anger of your spouse. As well as the vivid preoccupation with witches and fears of the cemetery (where the very poor sometimes have to sleep). Congo, man. What an absolutely fascinatingly fucked up place.
This is an interesting, unusual book. I don't particularly buy the idea of writing as a liberator (that sounds rather twee and I'd rather a decent, non-corrupt government and some protein, frankly), but it's written with passion and heart. Good effort.

L'âge de la première passe es un libro que trata de mostrar las condiciones de vida de las jóvenes prostitutas en el Congo. El autor une diferentes textos escritos por las chicas con su hilo de pensamiento. Sí, es uno de esos libros en los que "no pasa nada". El lector asiste a diferentes relatos que, mientras que no son anónimos, describen todos la vida genérica de estas menores. Violencia, abandono, subsistencia, pérdida de identidad, a veces también de esperanza por una vida diferente. A veces ni pueden imaginar que tal cosa exista. Lo que quiero decir es que las experiencias individuales de cada chica se fusionan en una imagen colectiva, pero única, de la prostitución.
Sin embargo, no es una simple colección de relatos. Cada capítulo está diseñado con esmero fusionando diversas disciplinas mediante la voz del autor: historia, antropología, y obviamente literatura. Se trata de la no ficción, pero uno llega a preguntarse sobre la veracidad de la obra. Los relatos son reales, pero el autor no puede haberlos incluidos todos, y también corrige los textos antes de incluirlos en el libro. Hay información que se pierde en el proceso. Pero, ¿significa eso que sea falsa la visión que él ofrece? "La verdad es la suma - respondería Bertina - de todas las subjetividades".
Tuve la suerte de tener un encuentro con él, y aunque aprendí a ver el libro desde otra perspectiva, tenía la impresión de que ya conocía al hombre que tenía delante. Es un relato muy íntimo y mordaz. Tan personal, que uno comienza a preguntarse si el autor trata realmente de entender las condiciones de estas chicas, o si, por el contrario, trata de entenderse uno mismo mediante la observación del otro.
