I’m still not getting a tattoo, but this book is good. Tebori is traditional Japanese hand tattooing. Many artists praise it for its ability to create subtle gradations of tone that are difficult to achieve with a machine.
Yoshi, a troubled teenager, is sent by his grandfather to Seijun, a highly renowned tattoo artist. Against all expectations, the boy masters the art of tattooing, including the complicated Tebori technique. Ten years later, Seijun reveals a great secret to his apprentice: his clients are from the yakuza, the formidable Japanese mafia. Each tattoo they bear has a specific meaning, often to do with the murders they’ve committed. When Yoshi discovers that his friend is tattooed with the same strange design as one of the yakuza bosses, his whole world turns upside down…
The action felt breakneck and plot engaging. Yoshi and other characters have interesting backstories.
Toledano's art is stunning, his colour schemes vary from place to place and correspond to moods. A sign of a true artist. The font, though, doesn’t sit on a clear baseline. The effect feels a bit distracting. Word balloons go off panels in places. Uncool.
Overall, a good and engaging comic book. If you're into tattoos, yakuza and Japanese culture, give it a go.

I'm a long time/old school tattoo fans and that's the part of this comic book that really please me. The tattoo universe in Japan with the Yakuza and all, it was great. Other then that, or if you're not a tattoo fans, it's an average graphic novel with casual life, crime, good but nothing special about illustrations. But for me, it was a really cool one!

Der Klappentext hält zwar, was er verspricht, aber viel passiert hier abseits vom Blurb nicht wirklich. Die Charaktere blieben mir recht flach und eine Handlung hat mir auch gefehlt.

Dieser Graphic Novel war ein Zufallsfund: Ich bin beim Vorbestellen für die Mangas und Graphic Novels in der Innsbrucker Wagner'schen darüber gestolpert. Das Cover und die Prämisse waren für mich super ansprechend, also hab ich es bestellt. Die Überraschung: Ich hatte gedacht, es wäre ein Manga! Tatsächlich aber ist es ein Graphic Novel mit Handlung in Japan.
Wie hat mir "手彫り/ Tebori" denn nun gefallen? Sehr gut! Der Zeichenstil gefällt mir gut und die Aufmachung ist ansprechend. (Nach der Story gibt es in meiner Ausgabe sogar einen Extra-Teil mit Zusatzzeichnungen, Concept Art und Skizzen.) Ich finde, das ist ein vielversprechender Auftakt einer Graphic Novel-Trilogie mit origineller Geschichte: Es geht um Yoshi, dessen Großvater ihn nach seiner schwierigen Vergangenheit als Mitglied einer Straßengang einem Tätowier-Großmeister anvertraut. Unter den Fittichen von Horiseijun erweist Yoshi sich als Naturtalent und meistert sogar die althergebrachte Tätowiertechnik Tebori. Das Spannende: Die Kunden des Großmeisters sind Yakuza, die japanische Mafia. Im Laufe dieses ersten Bands werden schon mystische Elemente angedeutet und es fließt viel japanische Kultur ein, was ich zu schätzen weiß. Alles in allem hat mir der Beginn von "手彫り / Tebori" echt Spaß gemacht und ich bin schon gespannt darauf, wie es weitergeht. (Meiner Meinung nach dürfte die Reihe schon jetzt gerne mehr als drei Teile haben.)

The drawings are superb but the story does not seem to be going anywhere. There is not even a hint of what the plot will be in this first volume except for a plot twist at the end that comes out of nowhere and is meant to keep you reading.

I loved this comic, about Yoshi; a young Japanese tattoo artist who is trained in the traditional style of tebori. This story does contain quite a bit of violence and there is a heavy mention of gangs. It's a very extensive story that is paired with beautiful art and colouring. The cover is a true testament to the greatness that is this graphic novel. There is a great vibe to the colours used and their aid to the story.
The characterisation of Yoshi was great as well, especially with his interactions.
And what an ending that was! I'm not yearning to read the second volume, but I am very much interested in finding out about the story of that tattoo!

'Tebori' by Jose Manuel Robledo is a graphic novel about violence and tattoos. It takes place in Japan, so that makes some sense.
When Yoshi continues to get in trouble, his grandfather sends him to work with Seijun, a master tattoo artist. His friends are convinced that Yoshi is tattooing yakuza, but it's not until Seijun is injured that Yoshi learns about the secret room where Seijun worked on these dangerous clients. Now Yoshi is working day and night to help Seijun, and learning to tattoo on Seijun's secret customers.
Initially, I found this story to be a bit confusing because I couldn't tell that time was passing or what I was seeing was a flashback. I did end up really liking this story, and the art. The art and coloring are really good in this story. While the story doesn't finish here, I'd like to read more of this series.

Buenísimo comienzo: tatuajes misterio, la búsqueda de la identidad creativa...francamente este cómic lo tiene todo, claro que no se si soy imparcial, todo en esta historia me encanta: la cultura japonesa, los tatuajes, las películas (Seijun es clavadito al espadachín ciego Zatoichi! y no es cosa mía, lo he buscado y los autores lo confirman) Si os gustan todos los elementos que he nombrado ya tardáis en leerlo, y si no... también, una buena dosis de intriga siempre esta más que bien. Recomendadísimo. 10/10

As a teenager Yoshi got involved with motorcycle gangs. After an incident which sees him injured and in trouble, his grandfather pleads with a tattoo artist to take Yoshi on as an apprentice.
Unbeknown to the grandfather Seijun is not just a master tattoo artist, he is also a tattoo artist for the yakuza.
Years later Yoshi has become a leading tattoo artist himself and when Seijun is no longer able to tattoo, Yoshi takes over under his supervision.
And it is now that Yoshi realises that Seijun's clients are also yakuza.
And so Yoshi enters a world of violence, ritual, myths and murder, and as he becomes reknown in his own right he has to navigate the twists and turns of the world that he has entered.
This is the first volume of what is shaping up to be an intriguing series. Yoshi listens to the violent myths of the men he tattoos, quite unaware of how these stories will spill over into his own life. When he meets a young woman who has a tattoo he designed on her back he is suddenly thrust into mystery and danger. Who is this mysterious woman and how did she get his tattoo?
The art and storytelling are really good and together they build up anticipation in the reader for all that is to follow. I was quickly pulled into the story and I felt quite dissapointed when this volume finished. If you like action and story, as well as great art, then this is definitely a series to get into.
I want to see how Yoshi will survive this violent world that he has inadvertently entered. Who is this girl who bears his artwork? How can he continue to work tattooing incredibly dangerous people?
What other secrets is Seijun hiding and above all how can Yoshi become a master tattoist and stay alive?
Lots os action, myths, mystery and violent murder, and also just highly intriguing!

Geschichte:
Der Hauptcharakter arbeitet bei seinem Meister im Laden. Während er normale Kunden bedient, kümmert sich sein Meister um spezielle Kunden, die nur über den Hintereingang reinkommen. Doch dann kann sein Meister diese Kunden nicht mehr bedienen und der Hauptcharakter muss eine Doppellast tragen, indem er die normalen und die speziellen Kunden bedient. Doch die neuen Kunden bringen nicht nur Profit, sondern auch einige Herausforderungen und Geschichten mit.
Der Comic ist wirklich gut gelungen und spannend. Er umfasst auf wenigen Seiten eine interessante Geschichte, die im ersten Band allerdings erstmal nur erste Einblicke gewährt. Der Band endet mit einem offenen Ende und läd dazu ein den nächsten Band bald zu lesen.
Charaktere:

Zeichenstil:
Der Zeichenstil hinterlässt auf jeden Fall Eindruck. Die Tattoos werden mit viel Liebe zum Detail dargestellt. Der Stil ändert sich auch, wenn eine Geschichte erzählt wird.
Ein gut gelungener Comic, der auch einige Einblicke in die traditionelle Kunst des Tattoowierens bietet.

It's full color! Oh that's a wonderful surprise. The art is great, the choice in font for the lettering cheapens it, but doesn't detract too much from the panels. The story was solid until probably the last 10 pages; it kind of unraveled. I guess it was meant to ramp up the action but it felt untethered. The first part of the story is grounded in tradition trying to survive in the modern world, the last bit has a femme fatale and a murder. I think I'm going to pass on volume 2.

"Tebori" is a beautifully put together comic filled with blood, guts, tattoos, and motorcycles. Although it was a little confusing at first, it proved to be exciting and full of stories.
The main character, Yoshi, is a young tattoo artist who's also in a gang. He spends most of his time either tattooing, or at the club. That is, until his Master goes into retirement, and loses his finger.

A book that pleasantly disarms. It appears to be about gangs and yakuza in particular (boring), tattoos (boring and ugly) and a lad who can't escape his destiny on the wrong side of the law (boring and done to death). But in combining all three it makes for a more interesting and attractive book, and the final disarming beat of this volume means the rest of the trilogy has a lot of promise. I'm actually surprised by how much I want to see the next two parts...

This is about a young man in Japan who has gotten himself into some trouble with a gang. He's sent to learn from a master tattoo artist. Years later, he's become as good as his master. That's when he finds out that his master secretly tattoos Yakusa in the room above the store.
The art is really good. But the story is told confusingly and not much happens. The whole thing is kind of boring, unfortunately. I thought I'd really enjoy this one.

Ein sehr interessanter Comic, vor allem wenn man sich für Tattoos interessiert. Hätte nicht gedacht dass eine Geschichte übers Tätowieren spannend sein könnte, aber der Cliffhanger am Ende hat mich eines Besseren belehrt.
Einzig die abrupten Szenenwechsel fand ich teilweise irritierend. Der Zeichnungsstil passt sehr gut zur Geschichte und ich LIEBE die verwendeten Farben!

Superb. No other word for it. Superb drawing and storyline, The layout worked brilliantly and I was absorbed immediately into the narrative. Gutted at the end with the cliffhanger. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!? can’t wait to find out. One of the best graphic novels I’ve read in a long time.

La calidad de dibujo y guión es incuestionable, hasta ahora leer a este par de autores ha sido una apuesta segura porque es un disfrute en todos los aspectos. Inhalt: Nachdem Yoshi als Mitglied einer Motorradgang auffällig geworden ist, wird er von seinem Großvater zu einem alten Freund gebracht. Dieser ist ein angesehener Tätowierer und lehrt Yoshi sein Handwerk, auch die komplizierte Tebori Technik. Wenige Jahre später agiert Yoshi selbst als Lehrer und wird voraussichtlich der Nachfolger des Ladenbesitzers. Doch der Tag seines Antritts kommt früher als gedacht. Ist Yoshi bereit diese Verantwortung zu tragen?
Das Thema Tattoos interessiert mich seit geraumer Zeit, weswegen ich mich sehr über diesen Comic gefreut habe. Der Zeichenstil hat mir außerordentlich gefallen und auch die Aufteilung der Bilder war platznutzend ausgerichtet. Ein kleiner Zeithinweis wäre wünschenswert gewesen, denn an manchen Stellen, war ich mir nicht sicher ob die Handlung in der Vergangenheit oder Gegenwart spielte.
Der Autor hat eindeutig Nachforschungen betrieben, da in dem Comic einige Fachwörter vorkamen, die ich als Leserin teilweise nur mithilfe des Glossars verstanden habe. José Manuel Robledo hat der Handlung viel Tiefgang, kulturelle wie mystische Aspekte und Details zugeschrieben, weswegen mir der Comic auch länger vorkam als knapp 70 Seiten.
Mir hat das Lesen sehr viel Spaß gemacht und die Bonusseiten haben mich nur noch mehr vom Zeichenstil beeindruckt. Mal sehen wie es in Teil 2 weitergehen wird, denn der Cliff-Hanger war äußerst gemein.

Als ich die Ausgabe zu Tebori das erste Mal in der Hand hatte, war ich angenehm überrascht vom Format und der hochwertigen Erscheinung. Bisher hatte ich noch kein Comic von Cross Cult in der Hand, daher kann ich wenig Vergleiche ziehen, doch das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis finde ich durchaus angemessen.
Die Zeichnungen sind gut und detailliert. Die Gesichtszüge sind gut dargestellt, sodass man auch im Gesicht viel ablesen kann. Das hat mir besonders gut gefallen. Die Tattoos gefallen mir auch sehr gut. Generell trägt die Farbwahl und der Zeichenstil sehr zur düsteren Atmosphäre bei. Da passt alles sehr gut zusammen.
Die Geschichte ist spannend und gut erzählt. Manchmal gibt es Sprünge in der Handlung, bei denen ich mir einen offensichtlicheren "Cut" gewünscht hätte, sodass man merkt, dass hier gerade eine andere Handlung weitergeht.
Der Schöpfer schafft es sehr gut, Sympathien und Antipathien zu verteilen und bindet das auch gut in die Geschichte ein. Dazu kommen manchmal überraschende Wendungen, die nicht an den Haaren herbeigezogen wirken.
Natürlich endet der Band mit einem überraschenden Cliffhanger, dessen Auflösung man wirklich gerne lesen möchte.

Très jolis dessins et couleurs, histoire intéressante et lexique en fin de volume utile et didactique. Vivement le prochain tome !
